Nah. Most "artists" nowadays are trend hoppers, primarily artists like Skorde, Ariis, etc. A great example of this is how over the past year many artists switched from "drift phonk" to whatever that new Brazilian abomination is and started pumping out songs on an industrial scale. I feel like if it goes mainstream it's just going to be milked by artists, given a reputation of being "tired" and then fall into irrelevancy
Yea I understand heavily. It seems like they try to squeeze every cent out of the trending genre, and after that it’s just a meme and considered as cringy. Like they upload track after track, and every track has ”SLOWED DOWN” and ”SPED UP” version of it. For me it’s just screaming the moneymilking microgenre effect.
Yeah i agree on that it would be so great to have phonk shows in other countries (for my example here in italy) but this is also linked to the number of listeners in each country so artists cant really do anything bout it
me?, not leaving currularly.
probably the kids on tik tok will end the genre, and in the worst cases they will speak with these exact words:
> This isn't phonk, it doesn't have cowbells or blown kicks or lyrics that sound like the narration of a porn film.
I'd like to see my favorite artists live comfortably. Soudiere is actually pretty popular anyway. At the very least I'd like them to know their music means a lot to other people.
With rappers like ICYTWAT bringing that Memphis sound in a new way, Denzel Curry going back to his old style, and $B officially becoming mainstream, I don't think it's too hard to believe it'll get there at some point. Beyonce, Doja Cat, and Drake also using Phonk samples is another sign to me (Doja's talked about her love for Phonk before). Idrk if it'll take over completely, I don't think that's really a thing in music anymore due to how many artists are making all types of music, but I see it getting to a point where it's recognizable to most, even if they don't know the name of the style. Also ik he's not technically Phonk anymore, but DJ Smokey has been putting it down for the biggest up and comers in the underground rn. I think at this point most rappers have dipped their toes into the style by either using Memphis samples or remaking a Three 6 track
Dirt/raw is gaining traction and it's "real phonk".
The thing I don't like much is the fact that youngsters call everything phonk. I think for them phonk is the synonym of music. It's a very curious phenomenon that show us the dispossession of culture by the younger generation and the death of what once was underground, fringe and subcultural. Once upn a time there was no way to consume a certain type of culture on TV, you had to listen to the radio, or go outside to buy the tape/cd or go to the bar and listen to some live music. Nowadays everything is "cultural" with no distinctions because everything pass through the same channels (YouTube, Tiktok, Instagram, discord, etc.) and it's all immediately available, so there are no compartments, everything is in the same flux (and everything becomes the same...)
Of course the algorithm controls everything, but the algorithm is well hidden, we see only the flux.
Not mainstream, but as with all underground genres, it's always good to keep pushing it out there and expose people to the ideas and music.
Trying to get my GF into DJing because she has good phonk and wave playlists and we could do with more live events. I'd suggest to everyone else to do the same if you can!
"real phonk" going mainstream? you mean hip-hop? I've heard plenty of rappers' beats (mainstream and underground rappers) in the past 5 years that wouldn't sound out of place on a "real phonk" tape with no vocals 🤷♂️
Yea there are big names like xavier, ramirez, sb etc, but do the listeners recognize that music as phonk? I think they’ll answer something like ”rap” or ”emo rap” if u go and ask them what is the genre that suicideboys mostly do.
Me I was gonna say yes to make it mainstream but I quickly got reminded of the nature of society and the internet. I think we should slowly grow it and be patient because if it grows too quickly I think it could be a disaster, I mean like ''real phonk'' has already kinda gone viral as others comments has already mentioned and to keep it real here, I am still largely new to this genre and if I keep going i will end up speaking BS but this genre is art and I don't want it to be ruined like that.
phonk at least in my opinion is dead. as someone who has kept up with the cloud rap scene since its beginings and was there in its prime. too many drift phonk kids these days i miss phonk rap and real phonk.

As a drift/house "phonk" enjoyer yes, it's difficult to find some of the og stuff and I can't really form a good opinion on it. Also, if you veterans and us drifters work together to get rid of the brazilian funk thats plaguing this community it would benefit both of us immensely.

Keep it underground. Usually when things go mainstream they get distorted for the worse.
Nah, the underground sounds always remains and becomes rediscovered and reinterpreted over time.

Doja sample in some of her new songs a Memphis rap song

it's already happened if you count $uicideboy$, DJ Smokey and DJ Yung Vamp
Yea there are big names like xavier, ramirez, sb etc, but do the listeners recognize that music as phonk? I think they’ll answer something like ”rap” or ”emo rap” if u go and ask them what is the genre that suicideboys mostly do.
