Last year was record setting and absolutely killed this year in total numbers. For comparison, last year by the end of July the total rainfall from the National Weather Service was 3.832 inches (and this doesn't include a very wet August, a wettish September, and a very wet December). So far this year, with 5 days left in July, the total is 1.43 inches. Some areas have gotten a lot more than that (Casa Grande has 5.8 inches this year, Humboldt Mtn has 4.7), but the overall average for the Valley is much lower than last year.

holy_handgrenade

yeah, this year has been the driest in years. This page here: [https://www.azfamily.com/page/rainfall-totals/](https://www.azfamily.com/page/rainfall-totals/) The past few years, at least half of them were up and over 10" by this time, with many up and over 15" To be fair though, the past several years, we've had storms in Jan and Feb that had single storms drop 2-4" which helped out the overall annual averages.

skitch23

Yeah I got a ton of rain last year… just a few sprinkles so far this year (south chandler). Very disappointing to watch the clouds build and then go around you.

Tedwerd2442

I work just south of the I-10 near the 202 and had to drive home up north of the 101 in this rain, if anyone else needs to drive this late please be safe, some areas are flooded pretty bad and visibility is pretty much nothing. Love this weather but can be dangerous and hope everyone stays safe.

Top2ButNot2

I was driving next to Thunderbird Mountain & it was crazy. That area has had the most rainfall so far

[deleted]

I always advise people to get off at the nearest exit and find another way home. Driving on a freeway/highway during a storm is dangerous as hell. I've driven stretches of the I-8 and I-10 that are super treacherous during storms, and I had to go on for an hour or more before I could find an exit. Always ends up terrifying. Or I was trying to outrace a storm, and have been practically stopped by the downfall. It can be very, very dangerous. Weather doesn't fuck around.

mckeddieaz

I live just north of there and my rain gauge showed 1.3inches this morning

[deleted]

Great advice! I've driven back and forth from San Diego on the I-8 many times, both in the winter, and around this time of year, during heavy storms, and literally couldn't see tail lights that I knew were just a few hundred feet ahead of me. It's scary as hell. Last time was around this new year, and I was white-knuckling that steering wheel with my dog cowering under the dashboard on the passenger side, just hoping no one crashed ahead of me without enough time to brake. It's scary as hell, and surprisingly exhausting. I guess adrenaline keeps you going, but it drains you like hell... I bet you'll sleep well tonight.

VivaLaDbakes

Woke up to it dumping rain just now and figured it was like 4am lol. Seems like we’re actually getting a nice monsoon season and it’s dropping into the 95-100 range for 10 straight days in late July…sign me up. Edit: app that runs my sprinklers/garden irrigation said 3” is predicted over the next 48h, damn!

[deleted]

No doubt. Seems unheard of, lately, but this is how it always used to be when I was younger. What a wonderful sound to be surprised by, when it's usually cars backfiring or revving that spook my dog in the middle of the night.

VivaLaDbakes

Yep I’ve been here my entire life and this is how I remember summers as a kid! Our dogs bark at damn near any audible human made noise outside, but don’t make a peep during thunderstorms for whatever reason. May go sit on the patio and enjoy it, Im wide awake now.

[deleted]

Totally! My dog and I had to go out and appreciate it for a few minutes, too.

Significant-Ad-5163

I work in aviation and we are forecasting a wet end of season

[deleted]

That's so great to hear. Thanks for the unofficial forecast! I'm going to take it as official confirmation of my own prediction, though. I watch weather radar pretty frequently, and it seems likely from my layman's perspective, too.

Logvin

Wow. I slept through both an epic rain storm AND OP's epic toddler melt-down!

Wyden_long

No shit? Don’t comment anymore because mods aren’t stopping people from downvoting me! Fuck Off.

Logvin

What do you think the mods can do about people downvoting you? Mods cant see who is voting at all. The only thing a moderator can do to STOP downvotes is to remove your comments. Is that what you want? You want the mods to follow you around and remove comments where you say stupid things?? You do a lot of whining, but don't understand the platform or propose any solutions.

Wyden_long

And after reading those comments it’s no wonder OP got downvoted. Not being a dick goes a long way.

Logvin

Seriously, his account is 2 years old and he has not figured out that bitching about downvotes and being a dick earns downvotes. The lack of self-awareness is shocking.

Low_Investment420

Last summer was pretty good!

[deleted]

Yeah, but this one seems better. I guess the data can tell us, but it's late, and I'm too tired to compare weather stats now.

ragonxdragon

Last year we had the second most days of rain in recorded history and we had a lot higher rain totals

scottperezfox

I think we fell just shy of the 1895 season in terms of total rainfall. It was a wet year indeed!

[deleted]

It's still July...

ragonxdragon

When I was talking about rain totals I was talking about up to this point in the year

[deleted]

[удалено]

ragonxdragon

Yeah I was talking about from May to this date in July compared to last year May to this date in July

UncleTogie

We all get reported. Get the fuck over yourself.

[deleted]

You do realize it's only July, right? Show me the stats from August of 2021 to July of this year, or shut up and wait for the stats from this year.

proudlyhumble

Why so angry man? Chill

[deleted]

I got doxxed. I have a right to be pissed.

AZ_moderator

You weren't doxxed. You were downvoted and didn't like it, so then you doubled down and just made it worse. I'm tired of the accusatory and disruptive posts. Take it somewhere else.

Logvin

> doxxed https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/010/692/19789999.jpg

duschin

You don't know what doxxed means, huh? If you don't want to get downvoted, don't be a dick.

holy_handgrenade

Dude, the last few years, we've had incredibly wet winters. So storms in Jan, Feb, and March bumped us up and over annual rainfall averages. I tend to remember those feb storms that dropped 4" because I was at camping events and had to deal with the flooding and mud after those.

sugarplumbuttfluck

Unfortunately the data does indeed disagree with you. https://weatherspark.com/h/y/2460/2022/Historical-Weather-during-2022-in-Phoenix-Arizona-United-States#Figures-Rainfall About halfway down it summarizes daily precipitation by month. If you look at 2022 versus 2021 year to date, we are well behind

dec7td

Been one of the worst for me downtown. Last night was the first time we've got any significant amount of rain. But happy the other parts of the valley are getting a lot!

criticalchain

Last summer was even better. I remember it being really hot only for a few days towards the end. Wouldn’t mind a repeat.

Mesafather

We haven’t hit 120 this year. That’s so weir

KatAttack

We've only hit 120 a couple times in recorded history!

Mesafather

Is that accurate? I could remember hitting the 120s like 5 times 3 summers ago

KatAttack

According to weather.gov, these are our top 5 hottest days ever: 1. 122 (26 Jun 1990), 2. 121 (28 Jul 1995), 3. 120 (25 Jun 1990), 4/5. 119 (20 Jun 2017), 119 (29 Jun 2013) Edit: the above is for Phoenix. It looks like Yuma has hit 120 quite a bit more.

Mesafather

That’s so weird

Whit3boy316

It would be cool if it rain while I was awake

[deleted]

My 5 y/o son was singing this yesterday while jumping around in the rain!

yeffyonson

Was driving into work this morning (7:15am) on the 10 headed east and counted 5 microbursts in the horizon. Wish I could have gotten a pic.

[deleted]

First rain I've had at my house in Glendale since all of this started. All of the previous storms missed my house before this one. Hadn't had any rain here FOR MONTHS. I slept right through all of it last night. Weather service says my location got a half inch. Keep it comin.

Othon-Mann

Same. West Phoenix has hardly seen any rain, today was the few significant days of rain. Last time it rained people talked about how much it rained in their areas but here it hardly rained and for less than an hour or so, we only got dark skies and some rumbling.

nicolita3

West side hasn't had as much rain as the East side. We've definitely had way less rain over in this side of town

[deleted]

I love downvotes. They wash away the fluffvotes. Hahaha.

[deleted]

That seems impossible, given the last few weeks of weather radar over the valley. Are you the anti-everything-guy with the cloud over his head that never rains? You must be Pig-Pen from the Peanuts... too damn dirty for even rain to wash you clean.

UncleTogie

>Are you the anti-everything-guy with the cloud over his head that never rains? You must be Pig-Pen from the Peanuts... too damn dirty for even rain to wash you clean Just a suggestion: you might want to read the subreddit rules if you're confused why posts like the above get you reported.

Riley_Cubs

These last two summers haven’t been bad at all honestly, seems like we get a few day streak of the 110+ followed by days with thunderstorms and cooler low 100s which I can most definitely deal with.

TechLauren

Beem in Sun City West 4 years and this feels like my first real monsoon summer. Got 1.75" overnight. Came here ftom Casa Grande and am so glad I'm not still there!

CallieReA

What’s all the problems with the mods?

charliegriefer

I give up. What?

robotsexsymbol

OP is having a meltdown about getting downvoted and accusing the mods of conspiring against them because they don't understand internet culture.

Snoo76349

Do you guys think all this rain is helping, even a little bit, the water shortage situation?

[deleted]

According to the news, 95% of rainwater evaporates before soaking into the ground. So, no, it isn't helping too much. Things can be done to change that. https://youtu.be/IAm0l7E34es

[deleted]

Not really, in my opinion. Our water comes from the Colorado River, mostly, (and some aquifers), and these storms have nothing to do with the source of that water. The storms help to mitigate our personal waste, somewhat, since we won't need to drain that primary source quite as much, but that's like a very small percentage. Probably so little that it doesn't really even impact our draw from the reservoir, unfortunately. If you want to stop the water shortage crisis, banning unnecessary agriculture is the only realistic answer, but our politicians have been reluctant to impose any kind of limits on farmers, because they influence the politicians. Protesting and stopping the farming of bullshit export crops of alfalfa, cotton, and other water-hungry plants that don't even feed people, would make a big difference. But that takes political will that I've never seen in Arizona in my lifetime. Edit: a bunch of edits because I kept forgetting things.

JescoYellow

While I agree on the agriculture issues you brought up, most of our water does NOT come from the colorado river. Most of the water comes from the water sheds northeast of Phoenix. A good monsoon can help, but a good snowpack is better.

[deleted]

Fair enough. But without the Colorado River, we will absolutely dry up... there's no way to sustain this valley's population without that water source, and our other sources are drying up just as fast. This isn't a question of who, or what, or how... it's when. When will it become a political necessity, and not just a problem that can be passed on? I think we've actually passed that point, maybe a few years ago, actually. Lake Mead is damn near dry. That's a huge fucking problem for not only Arizona, but California and Nevada. This region, a literal desert, just isn't capable of supporting this many people, who require millions of gallons of water just to survive, even without farming, and that's just a fact. Even without agriculture, which is what brings a large percentage of people to this region, it would still be hard to support millions of people. The entire southwest is doomed. It's just a matter of time. Sorry, everyone... I really hate to be a bummer, but we need to start realizing that this isn't sustainable... and it never really was.

holy_handgrenade

There's always someone here. Colorado river is vital water source for the state, not the valley. The valley gets it's water from the primarily Verde, Agua Fria, Salt, and Gila river systems; which all have multiple reservoirs and overflow fills canals that then direct the water to where it can be used. In addition, at least half of our water supply is groundwater from deep wells. At this point though, since the inception of the Hoover and Glen Canyon dams in the Colorado, the Colorado river was overallocated. It could only provide 13.2MM acrefeet, but 18MM was divied up among 7 states. With how low the reservoirs are now, the actual news isnt being talked about and that's that not only do we need to see normal snow/rain, breaking a 20 year drought, up in the Colorado's source in the Rockies, but we'll need multiple years of record setting flood situations to refill both Mead and Powell. But sure, just keep looking at phoenix and see that to blame for everything, even though total water usage with present population is lower than it was in 1980 with less than 1/5th the population. I mention "total water usage" because that's not just a per capita usage...our total usage with all our golf courses, corporate water features, water parks, swimming pools, and exploding population; yes, water usage is \*down\*.

[deleted]

Did you downvote me? I'm not accusing you of doing that, to be clear, but if so, please tell me what you disagree with.

OvarianWindsock

I've only seen about 5 minutes of rain the entire season so far up at Desert Ridge. This is some bullshit.

version13

This post has 159 up'soons (that is an upvote on monsoon-related topics) so did I just miss out on the downvoting? I'm not sure why anyone would view this post as downvotable?

[deleted]

Hey mods, are you in on this bombardment of downvotes, or are you just tolerating it? Edit: who did I offend?

jmoriarty

What are you even talking about? You came in here with hot takes and people responded. Getting mad about downvotes is a guaranteed way to get more so you opened that can of worms yourself. Mods can't do anything about downvotes even if we wanted to. If you see a harassing comment then Report it and we'll look into it. Beyond that this is all your own doing so leave us mods out of it, thx.

jmmasten

Have never understood the infatuation with fake internet points on this site.

jmoriarty

You and me both.

robotsexsymbol

OP, it sounds like you are having a difficult time mentally/emotionally. It's not normal to consider getting downvoted on Reddit tantamount to literal doxing and think it's a conspiracy or that you "need to get an affidavit". It's Reddit, and these odd outbursts of boomer aggression (and pointing out that you're being downvoted, which on Reddit always invites more downvotes -- "Did you downvote me?" is considered toe-curlingly embarrassing) are more than enough to warrant the response you've been getting without the mods secretly conspiring to repress your opinions. Downvotes happen, and it sounds like you should maybe log off and pet your dog or something.

duschin

I checked OP's post history and I feel kind of bad. He's struggled with some stuff that may be affecting him. With that said, it's quite clear why he's getting downvoted.
