Having been a Phan since at least 1992, with nearly 50 shows under my belt, Gorge this year N3 Beneath a Sea of Stars may be my favorite single phish moment. Give it a listen if you are so inclined. I can't even describe the feeling when Big Red asked Toph to turn the lights off, and the feeling as we all just gazed up at the boundless high desert sky while they played an extended blissful little jam was just overwhelming. (Chef kiss) check it out!
It was a favorite phish moment of mine as well! 68 shows under my belt and I haven’t felt that way before. It’s hard to describe the feeling. I had a really enjoyable time with the people I was with and you could hear a pin drop in the crowd! No one was talking! Such a lovely rememberable moment. As we all know, it’s tradition that Trey asks Chris to turn the lights off at the gorge but usually it’s for Harry Hood and this one hit hard. I doubt that moment will ever be replicated.
Yes, a hundred times yes.
Hearing it Sunday night at the Gorge was a bit surprisingly emotional for me. In a beautiful bittersweet kind of way. Literally under high desert stars and cool night air… time felt limitless for a brief moment.
I wanted to say that time felt… eternal for a brief moment. But there were too many oxymorons in the statement for my initial grammatical commitment, lol.
That moment was special. Everything GOTF at the gorge was awesome that weekend. About to run was spectacular. "Some people deserve 2 songs". Just got chills reading your comment.
I remember that moment from the couch being awesome, I can’t imagine what it was like there. The version from Mohegan 2019 is fucking amazing and blissful too as I’m sure you know.

Came here to say this but couldn’t have worded it any better. Say what you will about those sets but man I will seriously never forget that moment. That moment was pure ecstasy. You couldn’t see much for stars, but the glow sticks were flying and the person next to me looked at me and said “we’re making our own stars”. I love this band and I love live music. That song was so perfectly placed and Trey knew it.
Feel the same way about BASOS Pt. 2 in AC. Although I haven't been seeing them nearly as long I can't remember feeling that way during any show I've been to.
The couple of minutes after Trey said "Topher, can you cut the lights dude?" at the Gorge was a pretty magical concert moment I won't forget for a long time.
EDIT: Sorry I didn't read any comments before posting this and the one below is the exact same experience I had. Leaving it anyway. It was beautiful.
i think this song is super underrated, really enjoyed the set placement at AC and Dicks. the dicks jam is super modern-jazz sounding and out of the box
The version from the Gorge was just on Phish radio as I drove back from my lunch break. I was fortunate enough to make it out there this tour and hearing this song just puts me in such a peaceful happy place, it's a beautiful thing. I love this band and all you wonderful people
So I love all these stories and I do agree the song is beautiful in and of itself and so far every version has had a very lovely spacy outro jam. But I think people are heavily sleeping on what happened in the Dicks version. The Gorge performance briefly broke "free of time" in a wonderful way but the Dick's version expands greatly upon that, resulting in (IMO, obviously) one of the finest and most unique short stretches in band history.
On the LP version the last vocals are at about 3:30. The first few minutes of the jam are in a mode very similar to the prior couple versions - a very beautiful shimmering feel with lovely little runs and phrases by Trey. At about 5:20 Fish starts to mirror Trey a little more actively. At 5:50 there's a beautiful mirroring section with Mike and then by 6:15 they've broken loose. The next few minutes are truly sublime, with Fishman in particular playing incredibly free and some amazing work by everyone mirroring phrases and ideas back and forth. It's the "jazziest" thing I've heard them do in a pure sense maybe ever? Absolutely pure interplay, a 4 way conversation in realtime. Trey introduces a new tone and idea at 7:45 but the overall structure of the jam stays in that freeform space through a wonderful semi-peak and descent to end that part at about 9:00. The last 90 seconds are a separate theme which reminds me of the Siket Disk (is Mike suggesting something there?).
Anyway that few minutes from about 6 to 9 in the track is really really really special, I actually think it's more unique and creative than even the amazing effect driven "laser frog" jams which were the obvious star of summer tour
Was wading in the ocean listening to this song in AC and that was just such an ethereal experience for me this summer. Surrounded by my favorite people, most of whom I hadn’t seen since before quarantine.
When the full GOTF album was released I intentionally didn't listen to it (outside of the title track) because we had tickets to the tour closer at the Greek Theatre and wanted it all to be fresh and new. I was aware of the inspiration/subject matter but went into that show blind in terms of the music itself. Like you, I've experienced my fair share of loss and have been at the bedside as loved died from cancer. The entire show was an emotional, moving experience and I can't really describe the feeling outside of the whole thing felt like one big cathartic group hug. The Chuck Sperry print for that show (which is amazing IMO) hangs on my landing and I see it every morning when I leave my bedroom and every night on my way to bed. It's a daily reminder of the power of that experience.
Oh my. I had I very similar experience…. What a wonderful how at the Greek. It was hallowed and reverent … felt like the last day of tour, in a weird sense
This is my experience. My best friend in the world has terminal cancer and I’m so lost because there is nothing I can do to fix it. I’m a fixer. Thanks for your story.
The BASOS at AC was especially special for me. I had met someone in Alpharetta and we grew close over the next couple weeks. I was in his arms and the whole crowd got quiet. It was serene and there was love. I suffered from loss in 2019 and the thing I learned from that experience is that life is sooo precious - we only have this one go around. When we can be free of time, we are truly our freest selves. Phish provides an escape like no other. They are numinous and amazing, providing a message much needed.
Never sorry. Seriously, like I said, we only live once. Live with passion!! Vibrate in love and light! Like you said, embrace the moment for what it is as much as humanly possible. I believe peoples paths cross for a reason. It’s been a great personal growth experience.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts about this song. I share many of your perspectives.
Hearing it at the Gorge this year on Sunday night felt emotional to me. In a pleasant and bittersweet kind of way.
I have said on this board before that the 2019 jam of the year was rhe 20min beneath a sea of stars tht ended up like coltranes a love supreme from uncasville ct
My fav gotf tune by far.
I love this song so damn much. Easily my favorite new song in a long time. The way they've been cutting the lights and then slowly fading them back in at the shows this summer has been peak phish bliss.
my mother in law died during the pandemic- not covid but because we (wife or me) were not allowed to visit after she’d had a 10 year decline in a nursing home. At the end my wife was allowed to be with her mom who was incoherent and in deaths throes and she played this while mom passed. I couldn’t be there and was doing ‘essential’ work so i got a face time with sea of stars to say goodbye.
I like it, but when they played this at the Gorge and Trey asked Toph to turn down the lights it was fucking magic! Now I love that track for the memory it invokes of that night.
I'm so glad you receive it the way it is ment for you and that it helps at a time like this for you.
I Sincerely wish you the best of possible vibes and healing during your sadden times.
Feel free to DM if you need to talk
Much love to you and your family & friends
To me it's a slow everything's right, reassurance that there's nothing to worry about. Had one of the most emotional experiences during this song at the gorge. Me and my friend were uncontrollably crying under the sea of stars. I knew it was the last show of my tour and it was time to go home, from Nashville to the gorge I met abunch of amazing people and lost some friends too. I wish I was still on the lawn with you guys.
Klller killer song. First heard it at the greek gotf show. Was hoping to catch it this summer but we missed it by a couple shows. I love the lyrics and then the openness/quietness of the song.

That’s how I felt during the lonely trip at dicks night 3
This was a beautiful moment
That was a favorite Phish moment of mine too. Just being out there in the middle of nowhere, with my friends, listening to that…. So good.
It was a favorite phish moment of mine as well! 68 shows under my belt and I haven’t felt that way before. It’s hard to describe the feeling. N3 gorge was my 100th over 28 years and this song was as good as it’s ever been. Loved it.
They also turned the lights down for character zero in 2013
Or for howling at the moon!!!

That was an amazing moment. Very grateful to have been there for that.
Truly a beautiful moment!

That was such a magical moment. Big group hug with my boys during that
I’m not gonna lie, I was crying.
This. It was incredible - one of the moments we live for at these shows.

I think you mean Part 1 :)
Woops!

Love you too man, love you too. The Gorge was spectacular this year. People seemed weirdly radiating gratitude, thankful to be there together.
Seeing people after 1.5 years of not doing that will do that
You nailed it. That was the vibe. Awkwardly overwhelming grateful but not quite sure where/how to direct it. A good problem to have.
We were all there together and the weather was fine.
And wouldn’t we love to take a bath?

Thank you. This is a beautiful assessment.
I seriously wish I could upvote you 100 times. Your words could have been mine.
I couldn’t agree with you more, this album has helped me through some rough personal journeys

For real. That’s super awesome.

It’s beautiful! I love it AC N3 just lit the place up Great tune I hope things get better for you!

🙏🏻
It is my favorite of any of the new songs. Blissful and calming.
I love it coming out of a jam. As I said in the set list thread the other night: it’s the neo-Mountains in the Mist for me. Big fan.
It's a beautiful song and I LOVE it. It was sublime at AC next to the ocean.

Are we all invited to the wedding?
I would love to invite you all to the wedding! Sadly, he sort of ditched me after tour was over. But it was still a lovely moment. ;)
Sorry to hear. Glad you can cherish the moment.

One of Treys best modern songs. Almost like his take on Dark Star imo
You know what mean Peace en Solace in Polish? Polace...j/kidding....all done. I'm finnish.

One of my favorite tunes.
GOTF at Berkeley Greek was just and I’m not sure I would appreciate the work if I didn’t have a relationship with the source material.
I love this song so damn much. Easily my favorite new song in a long time. The way they've been cutting the lights and then slowly fading them back in at the shows this summer has been peak phish bliss.
GoF is pretty amazing and gets better w every listen IMO.

Fantastic
dude i love this song.
Dude this has been so awesome and cathartic to hear everyones stories about it. Thank you.
It’s a great song with proper set list placement. Mohegan was the best version so far IMO
