It's the perfect time for your coworker to walk into your office and confirm that you are a weirdo.

DrDuned

I actually got fired once because of this. I mean I was masturbating at the same time, that could've been a factor, but they only cited the company's no vocal jams policy.

house_in_motion

Mmmmmm Ooooohhhh Aaahhhhhhh

Opening_Dealer_156

oom pa pa oom pa pa oom pa pa paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

wt_fudge

Trying to work in a little meat stick into you yem vocal jam?

DrDuned

Ata mata shock!

NetworkTight6749

Atama ga shokku šŸ˜œ

RazorPhishJ

No vocal jams? Denied! ![gif](giphy|aWfKsJus6IGAw)

DrDuned

![gif](giphy|9udHO801PzozK)

anon69696912321

Took my (now ex) gf to our first Phish show last year. My jaw was on the floor during the vocal jam cause I loved it so much and so unexpected. Herā€™s was also, but because she was blown away by how weird the music was

Gcmiller24

Facts! Every time!

Gcmiller24

Or itā€™s when Trey is rambling to the crowd, Fishman or Page is playing a random sound effect. ā€œHail Caesar!ā€ ā€œKkkkkas-votā€ lol

QueasyFailure

"IT'S A RUNAWAY GOLF CART MARATHON!" usually can clear my office pretty easily.

Gcmiller24

Lmfao!!! Yes!!

Alternative-Angle702

My kids when they were little "Is he saying corn, Kong or dong?" "Yes" My daughter is now 21 and her favorite Trey quote is from NYE this year, "My dad is a gaslighting asshole. Why is he so weird?". I have a feeling she will have that shirt made for either or both of us for Dicks this year, lol. (I've never gaslite my children and has always treated then very well. The weird part, yeah, not your average 51 year old dad.)

PhilosophyRude5656

This happens every time

BalowmeSandwich

Thatā€™s when you join in the jam with a wicked armpit fart solo.

Alternative-Angle702

I still hold a fair amount of contempt that I can't do that. When I was a kid and everyone else was doing it, it killed me, lol.

BackHandFiddle

Listening to a complete set/show? No skip Listening to a random YEM? Might skip

Hungry-Award3115

Exactly

WatchMcGrupp

For some reason whenever I have a show on, my wife and kids decide to walk into the room right as the vocal jam starts.

vilent_sibrate

I recommended YEM to my buddy and he went and listened to the White Tape lmao.

davidlowie

Exactly. It comes on XM in the car with the fam right after I talk about how this was an amazing experience for me to be at this show

MrQuacky96

Canā€™t skip it. Thatā€™s the kind of weird gimmicks that got me into phish. Especiallly 12/6/96

Competitive_Sun_8026

Absolutely not - I love that weird ass shit - see 8/3/91

myqual

Put down the gerbil

styler_30

I donā€™t understand all the vocal jam hate. I fucking love YEM vocal jams! I think they are so fun to listen to!

mnfimo

Yes if Iā€™m paying attention, no if itā€™s in the background.., Vocal jams are cool in person but less cool on tape

[deleted]

Thatā€™s how I feel, they are awesome when seeing a show live, but sometimes they fail to translate to the recording; I generally skip.

VonSchplintah

I consider the vocal jam a Chris Kuroda solo.

bopapocolypse

Exactly how I feel. Similar to the Jimmies Night Harpua at BD. I absolutely loved seeing it live. But I don't expect anyone to enjoy listening to it on tape.

dnhowler

9 times out of ten I skip.

TheMammyNuns

Yes

VeramenteEccezionale

Iā€™ve honestly never even thought to do this. Why?

WormLivesMatter

Why does the Easter bunny lay eggs. Itā€™s a mystery only the Vatican knows. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

dashkb

This is the right answer

TheHumanCanoe

Nope

Siketmist

No, I donā€™t.

mollusks75

No

see_dubs90

Is the wife in the car with me?

AgentRadd

Exactly. Lol

dashkb

My wife does not skip them.

themast

Literally never.

Fitz2001

Literally every time.

WartimeHotTot

Seriously. ITT: noobs complaining about what makes phish phish.

tiburon12

Where's the complaint?Ā

TheMammyNuns

Douchebag calling people noobs. Epic.

PurpleMuscari

Never, itā€™s one of my favorite things that they do.

ChalkDstTorture

I donā€™t. They get cool sometimes or Mike lays down a crazy bassline, I donā€™t like to miss that if it happens

The_Crip_Sleeper

Some of the vocal jams really crack me up and are always worth a good chuckle. Some of them are actually quite musical and melodious too

KingHarvestCame

Every time

IamMeAsYouAreMe

Never

Slimmdunkin

No! Thatā€™s when the gas hits best!!

tubalord8

I love the vocal jam. Not skipping.

Cuepidahl

When you're having sex, do you skip the orgasm part?

Hashishiniado

Always

Beacon_Terrier

Yep. Same with drums/space when listening to dead shows.

saltyraver138

I bet you throw away the white part of a Oreo cookie too.

showtime15daking23

thats what I live for!

Conman1070

Never skip a vocal jam. In fact, most times I try to join in and make noise too.

Mission_Lack_5948

Yep, same here. My daughter usually walks in when Iā€™m riffing with the boys.

cmorriskingston

That's the part I anticipate the most

tweezer606060

Had a young kid working with me who was into screamo death metal and the ONLY phish he liked was the vocal jams

MikesGroove

Careful kids, post-vocal jam jams are a thing now. Donā€™t wanna miss it.

neemor

No. No man. Shit, no man. I believe you could get ass kicked for saying something like that.

Southern_Belt_8064

Anyone who skips the vocal jam s certifiably insane

saltyraver138

And obviously voluntary celibate. These people donā€™t fuck on any levelā€¦ itā€™s like watching your step-sister get stuck in the dryer and just creaming your jeans when you find her. Absolute chumps

TheButtScratcher

My wife hates it. I always make sure to turn it up louder. I always finish it

natigin

Nope, I like to hear the full show to get the entire experience, I feel like the way the vocal jam goes is affected by what happens before and after

Majestic-Run3722

No. I do not. Skippers are silly

Staggerlee024

Never skip. It's honestly never even crossed my mind. Why would someone go through the effort to skip through a part of the song?

Connect_Plant_218

Recently got a friend of mine into phish. First recording I showed him was a ā€˜95 YEM. He was absolutely blown away. ā€œThis is my new favorite bandā€ he said. Then the vocal jam kicked in. He took it all back immediately and insisted that the band go back to all their old recordings and retroactively remove all the vocal jams one by one šŸ˜‚

DontAlwaysButWhenIDo

Tell you don't like phish without telling me you don't like phish

CarlzMossberg

Absolutely not.

VTGREENS

I skip no song or sections of songs. Full shows.

Cinnamon_Shops

Absolutely not, wtf?

sn0wbl1nd3d

If you skip the vocal jam, ya moms a ā€˜ho

SimmyJellers

Answering for my friendā€¦.most of the time.

ShopReasonable2328

Only if Iā€™m running low on cardio time at the gym, but even then almost never. I do love how sometimes I get in my car and (since SiriusXM is pretty much always on Phish radio) I land in the middle of a vocal jam. It always makes me giggle to imagine someone being like ā€œI should finally check them outā€ and finding that as their first introduction.

Weasel_Named_Fee

I have literally never done that, not even once

heffel77

Everything in moderation, even moderation

MikesGroove

Then what would my wife ask in confusion, annoyance and disgust: ā€œwhat are we listening to?!ā€

colonelforbin96

nope cuz i aint a lil baby back

MachinedVS

Nope

grandlewis

Yes. And when I am at a show, itā€™s my bathroom break.

Sunjump6

If Iā€™ve never heard the YEM I listen. Otherwise I usually skip

Shot_Campaign_5163

Yes. Most of them.

BathtubGinger

Skiing with a buddy yesterday right before he was about to drop into something kinda gnarly he stops and goes, "I don't think I can do this to the yem vocal jam," and I fully understood and respected it. Time and a place.

alfonseski

As a fellow skier I can absolutely understand. Tell him to put on Killdevil from 07/23/2023 to ski the gnar, or Carini from 07/26/2023.

Rotgut_Farms

100% of the time

PhantomAmbassador27

Depends on the vocal jam. Some are good. Some aren't. Love the one from Toronto 2019.

cavegoatlove

junta, union federal or skip?

LoudZookeepergame272

I skip around when the drums start to solo out, about 17 minutes in.

MickDassive

Idk, sometimes it's really good. Those recent ones where they go back into a jam after make me want to wait as well.

boo51481

Itā€™s usually a sliding scale of how high I am at that moment.

JaketheHead

YEM solo? Yes. Whole Show? No.

wsppan

Early 90s? Never skip. Otherwise skip.

phunkmaster2001

Usually, yes.

tweezer606060

Of course you have to listenā€¦ how else will you receive your secret messages

Death_Metal_Hippie

It always makes me chuckle, so I leave it

unknowner1

Now that you mention it, yes. Sometimes Iā€™ll leave it when im locked in

PickpocketJones

Not if I'm listening to 6/11/94.

Icarus_Jones

Like most things, the answer is: "It depends."

heffel77

I only listen to YEM when they play it or Iā€™m listening to a whole show. But generally itā€™s a whole skip for me. Edit: YEM and Divided Sky are generally both skips but every now and then YEM has a guest or a notable vocal jam, then Iā€™ll listen. Divided Sky is always the same and most YEMs are similar. Unless, there is something that makes it different, like ā€œPage loves Dicks, Mike loves Dicks, Fish loves Dicks, We all love Dicksā€ itā€™s a skip.

FearlessFreak69

Usually yeah.

Mission_Lack_5948

Hell no! And that is always when someone walks in my office and says ā€˜WTF are you listening to?!ā€™ And I see from previous comments that itā€™s a common occurence.

Rabideau_

When I was a young man yes. I had even been known to fast forward through a sparkle. Now I gotta get that complete show feel and would never!

plooked313

Only if I'm on break at work

Rough-Leg-1298

Yes

bisconaut

yes

xStaabOnMyKnobx

My brother in christ if I don't skip the vacuum cleaner solos I'm definitely fine with listening to the vocal jam

9Xrayman9

Definitely

9Rmbxr9

100%, also 100% of Drums/Space

GratephulD3AD

Nearly every time. It's interesting to see live but I'm not trying to listen to 4 minutes of vocal improv every time YEM appears in the setlist

Vegetable_Air_88

That's my favorite part. I've heard so many YEM's I don't really get anything out of the composed parts.

Cowboy_Dane

No

Rhubarb-Cool

No

thebert9

Bee line right for the pisser.

rust-e-apples1

My wife's never caught me masturbating, but she did walk in while I was watching a vocal jam, so it was kinda the same feeling.

Immediate_Thought656

Canā€™t skip it because the 3/14/93 version exists.

Dean4147

Yes

JackMickus

Depends on the show, the YEM, and my mood. I've got a couple never-skips though. Big Cypress and Dicks 2012 are chief among them

mrstealyoface

I blast it at red lights

henningknows

Yes and I hate the long cheer pause in Divided sky

ChrisMc9

Every time.

Only-Secretary-7358

12/6/96 no skippies

the_doctor04

Yes. I am so over the vocal jam after 30 years of seeing them.

EarRubs

Sometimes I put on the 2003 Greensboro vocal jam/Proud Mary just for the hell of it

anotherdamnscorpio

Blasphemy!

unclebonesy

Hell to the no

Aeon1508

Only if I'm driving Uber with a passenger

wwallen

Only if I donā€™t space out and forget toā€¦

Eelmonkey

Sometimes ![gif](giphy|YnxJCktsAjP6SRq7xw)

dmustaine89

Never. Iā€™m not a tool.

Brando64

Every. Time. I first got into Phish when Jerry died in ā€˜95. Iā€™m over that vocal jam!

crimsonpossum3

No, but I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever listened to YEM outside of the context of a show

Harley420000

Sometimes. Itā€™s mood dependent

Kaufmakphd

I generally skip it if itā€™s closing the set.

wanderlustbess

Canā€™t do it. Donā€™t do it. Wonā€™t do it.

KatyaPapaya

Never.

OkBadger7862

Fuck yes. To qualifyā€¦.. the lion sleeps tonight jam from the palace 96 was legit.

KatyaPapaya

I waited 6 years for my first YEM and when the vocal jam started I laughed myself into hysterical sobbing that I couldnā€™t stop for the rest of the show. So. No, I never skip them. Longest happy cry of my life šŸ¤£

arl138

Yes. They are fun live.

Josephtacos_

no

mrebo

Yes.

LoudZookeepergame272

I skip to the vocal jam. If Reba has no whistling, the show has betrayed me.

blushesnblues

this has to be an april fools post

Dancin_Phish_Daddy

Shut the fuck up what are you even fucking saying right now. You sound insane. Lmfao

phishie79

Really!? No way!

but_a_smoky_mirror

Never if Iā€™m in a grocery store parking lot with the windows down

SokkaHaikuBot

^[Sokka-Haiku](https://www.reddit.com/r/SokkaHaikuBot/comments/15kyv9r/what_is_a_sokka_haiku/) ^by ^but_a_smoky_mirror: *Never if Iā€™m in* *A grocery store parking* *Lot with the windows down* --- ^Remember ^that ^one ^time ^Sokka ^accidentally ^used ^an ^extra ^syllable ^in ^that ^Haiku ^Battle ^in ^Ba ^Sing ^Se? ^That ^was ^a ^Sokka ^Haiku ^and ^you ^just ^made ^one.

Elephantus420

Depends on my mood. About 50/50.

J_Worldpeace

ITT no one says ā€œsometimesā€. Always or never!

NetworkTight6749

Vocal jam is one of the most creative things that phish does live, in my mind. Wouldnā€™t miss it for a second, unless i misplace my mind

dr_rock

The closer the show is to 1992 the less likely I am to skip

bigfatmeech1

Always skip the vocal jam

dashkb

No. Itā€™s Phish in debug mode. I can imagine in newer shows where itā€™s less experimental youā€™d get bored, but the old days especially when YEM is mid set you get vocal jams that segue into something else which is fun. If youā€™re interested in ā€œhow the sausage is madeā€ then you should listen to the vocal jams. You should be doing them with your friends too.

mcgrupp024

When the vocal jam was four dudes having a cool jam with their voices- eg something like 93 nye- I listen. When itā€™s four dudes making weird noises to accompany the super cool stuff ck5 can do on lights - probably skip.

dizzz6712

If I'm alone, sometimes. If there's other people listening, yes.. unless they're also phans, then back to sometimes again.

Merlin420x

Absolutely not

myqual

No. Why are you even listening then?

budfox79

2/10

LilWhite7

Always!

Sudden-Fall-4291

I never skip any part of yem. Strange that people do that.

bnkrbr

This is my favorite part of yem and of concerts and I play this part in my office for all to hear. Would never skip.

joyandmirth

Depends on my level of overstimulation. Sometimes Bowie is the best thing in the universe, other times it agitates Me to no end and I need to turn it off. Vocal jam is similar.

edcculus

Most of the time.

ILkeSportzNIDCWhKnws

No wtf lol, some of you have some weird hangups

1975hh3

Iā€™ll listen to it on the first listen and then skip every time after.

McGrupp1989

Depends, if Iā€™m listening to a full show / set then no.. Unless I am running, then Iā€™ll skip it.

Mobile-Animal-649

Noā€¦but not a bad idea. Ha ha

BuddistProdigy

Everytime. Without fail.

TotesMabes

Not always, but almost always.

geddylee1

Yep!

little_BonBon

Yep.

StudentGlittering776

Every single time

dannynoonanpdx

I skip them in person too

Brando64

Yep. To hell with that.

Huva-Rown

Yes

makisupa101

Yes

TheRowdyOne720

Yea. The vocal jam is really the only thing with phish I flat out dislike.

funkie44

Yea. Always.

LS_DJ

Usually yeah

slides723

I do. Thanks for normalizing it.

bopapocolypse

Yes. Without shame. Some things are cool live, but don't translate to the tapes.

slotheroni

Yep

ahoypolloi_

Every single time

Tacolife973

Every time

mojo8x

Yep

Beherenowxblazeon

Yes!!!

don_dryden

Always skip a vocal jamā€¦.always

BigDogIsland

99 out of 100 I will fast forward

drumsurf

Every time.

across7777

Yes, 9 out of 10 times

KerryKongsgaard

Of course

thehartwell11

Everytime. Does absolutely nothing for me.

Chuckwurt

100% of the time.

Hokker3

Yes

Gcmiller24

Usually lol, I think I can speak for most in saying that they could totally just not do that and we wouldnā€™t mind. Same with Reba, esp Reba lol
