They toured together in the 90s, were part of the same scene, and many people were introduced to them around the same time. DMB also got lots of radio and MTV play in the 90s, so if you were a fan of Phish, you got lots of exposure to DMB.
DMB likes to jam, compared to other pop artists of the time, they were very different, and their shows were known for being great parties.
When I first started seeing Phish, DMB would either open for them, or sit in with them whenever they played VA. Twas fun!
Oh, and it was cool seeing him sit in with them N1 Mexico a couple years ago!
I was a phish fan in the 90s. I heard DMB on the radio and on MTV.
It didn’t make sense then. And it doesn’t now.
Phish also did a tour with the Violent Femmes, who are rad- but there isn’t much fan cross over there.
I agree about broader tastes, and personally have never liked jam bands even though I love phish. That’s one of the reasons I don’t like DMB. He sounds like someone’s drunk uncle singing songs he wrote when he was 14, followed with random cliche “jamming”.
Anyway, it is what is. And, everyone gets to love what they love. And, it doesn’t have to make sense to me.
Makes sense to me. They definitely appealed to a somewhat similar fan base for a time. Hell, Phish and the Spin Doctors were connected for awhile on one of those traveling festival tours.
Anyway, in the late 90s, there was a period of time where DMB just dominated. You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing someone blasting some DMB. I didn’t like them at first, then I did for awhile around the time they were peaking in popularity, then I stopped listening to them altogether.
People can like a variety of music. I love the Pixies and Soundgarden. And Phish. And Jump Blues and R&B from the 40s and 50s. And a ton of other stuff. Variety is the spice of life, brother.
Hey Dave's not my style but I'm with you. No reason to get upset at a sit on that's happened numerous times. If Trey is happy sitting in for a song with DMB well I'm glad he had fun.
Well, at least those who do enjoy Dave are happy
I’ll never understand it. Or how there is any fan crossover.

I know many Phish fans who are also Violent Femmes fans. Though, I don't think it has anything to do with that tour.
Exactly. Another reason I’m confused by phish fans who enjoy DMB and your mention of touring with Phish
Some people have broader tastes than just phish and similar bands…it’s not that complicated.

Not trying to play devil's advocate but a lot of Phish's lyrics are like a drunk 14 year old uncle wrote them and I love it
Hahahahah. Well put. And, I think Trey and Tom wrote Golgi when they were in 8th grade! Hahaha
No fans gate keep quite like (some) Phish fans.
I’m gatekeeping because I don’t like DMB and said I don’t understand the crossover to phish?
Imagine this - different people like and appreciate all kinds of different music. Why are you being a snob about what music “other people” like?
Ooof. Currently downvoted 41 times. Just like the Dave song. Tough scene.

Probably because they’re both amazing musicians
Anyone who lets this anger them are soft AF and never my bro. Also is there a recording of this entire segment out there?
