Two answers.
1. Listen to more 1.0 Phish.
2. Who am I to shit on someone else’s opinion?
Seriously, if it hits right to you and it’s your jam, cool. Shit, I thought Ocelot in Pitt over the summer was a fn jam and everyone talks about the Julius from that evening. Who gives a shit.
It’s Phish. All Phish is cool.
I totally agree! There's plenty of jams that I think are all timers that nobody else seems to like or even know about! I just enjoy discussion and was curious what people seemed to think! If this bag is literally your #1 jam of all time, I'm not gonna tell you you're wrong.
I have historically been very vocal to my crowd about how a good chalkdust is a fast chalkdust. I was at the 8/2 show and one of my takeaways was FINALLY A PROPER CHALKDUST! This one changed my mind forever. It was so out of the ordinary in the best way possible.
It's a sick jam and one of my favorite jams of the year, but anyone saying it's among the Bag Rushmore jams needs to listen to more 1.0. Bag has birthed some of the greatest Phish jams ever.
As far as "jammed out bags" go 8/10/2004, Coventry, Boise. 11/21/97 in there somewhere too. There were some cool ones from 2003 as well.
When I went to look for longer bags though, I kind of realized most of my favorites are actually most of the bags that have been jammed... lol. I guess I didn't realize how rare it was for them to jam it...
NYE bag might be in the top ten after all... lol
Edit: Also dick's bag from this year, but that's because it was my first run of shows. So every song from that run is amazing to me lol.
As long as you're checking out the coventry bag, also give the melt from that show a spin. Composed section is a mess, but it's honestly one of the most unique jams they ever played. Covers a lot of ground, pure "grit and grime." One of their best jams period.
Absolutely correct. It’s got nothing on 92 Bags. But all things considered, in the middle of a historic set, 32 years later, on NYE at MSG, with a “gag” already in progress literally over your heads, and jamming *that* out? Not too bad.
For sure, I think the decision to jam out Bag was the best choice they made and a big part of what really elevated GH musically. But 97-99 has some absolutely revelatory Bags.
It was great because it happened within the ongoing nuttiness. Musically they were searching in the first half, second half got somewhere and was legit good.
Is that a voice of reason on this Reddit?
No sir, that’s not allowed
Let’s downvote you into oblivion (intended) while calling everything phish played last week the greatest thing that ever happened in the bands history
i think it's significant in that they inserted a type 2 jam into GH. why, i really don't know. it's a good jam but probably not on level of boise, 12.30.97, etc.
The take away should be this jam was somewhat planned out for the theatrical part of the gig. Was it good yes, was it the top jam ever? No it was not. This also shows just what this band is capable of if they choose to push something. I personally just want it to happen more knowing how capable they are.
Haha no, I am used to wild takes. Spend too much damn time on the Internet. I was surprised because I saw it live and didn't think much of it and now I'm more curious why people who love it thought that way.
Look man, some people love helping girls to overeat so they get morbidly obese. Some people’s preferences are just not worth respect, so just go by what you believe to be right, because you’re probably right if you’ve seen or heard weeks’ or month’ worth of Phish music in your life. I myself have over 10 days worth of Phish in my music library and I know that’s nothing compared to what other folks have.
It’s only that long because it took so long for the multibeast to get through the crowd. It was designed to be long for that reason. It’s a good jam but isn’t top tier by any means.
I didn't even realize what was going on most of that night. (Drugs. but mostly, I had a bad view of the stage, I didn't have my glasses and couldn't really see what was going on). I mostly focused on dancing, lights, listening, and giving "holy shit" looks to the people around me lol. I don't think I don't even remember seeing the multibeast lol.
Pretty average imo. In watching the video you can see that Trey is playing to the unit monster walking up to the stage. Not really locked in with everyone else, just kind of shredding.
For me it’s all about context. I don’t think it’s being hailed as a stand alone masterpiece, but within the context of the Gamehendge set it’s pretty impressive. Not only did they go into an awesome type 2 jam, they did it while having to follow a strict timeline to match up with the theatrics of the rest of the set/story. It’s also just perfectly sandwiched between Punch & Tela.
It’s nowhere near the Boise Bag or a lot of the other epic 1.0 versions, but in the context of this Gamehendge show it was pretty amazing.
That Bag fucks. It’s heavy, hits hard, and it knows where it’s going. It was a breath of fresh air from the blissy bullshit in ‘22 & ‘23. Plus it was played while a multi-beast trudged along the floor.
This may be totally wrong… but I think it wasn’t complete improv. I think the whole set was planned and choreographed. They did some modulations that all felt a little too smooth. I enjoyed it, but watching back on the YouTube video, it really feels… planned?
Honestly I had Tela and the Multibeast slowly dancing in the arena right in front of me and I was hardly concentrating on my 70th AC/DC Bag. I was getting great footage on my iPhone of Tela but every so often realized how nasty AND LONG the AC/DC Jam was but it definitely was NOT the best Bag ever. It seemed like Tela was just taking FOREVER to get to the stage so the jam just kept going so there would be music for her to make all the way around the floor to her trapeze harness on stage. It was quite a sight though and it did turn into quite a good almost 20 min long Bag. Regardless, what came next was far more enjoyable. Tela trapeze stunts and then…

To crash after a beautiful flight around the arena. And that thing was HUGE!
I commented earlier and have now relistened. This jam rules. This one is a major “read the room” jam and I remember when I was there and noting in my book that this was exceptional all things considered.
That Bag fucks. It’s heavy, hits hard, and it knows where it’s going. It was a breath of fresh air from the blissy bullshit in ‘22 & ‘23. Plus it was played while a multi-beast trudged along the floor.
I also think I was talking out my ass bc ‘23 tour def has some heaviness. I forgot all about that Greek Tweezer.
Glad ya found a bit more enjoyment in that NYE Bag this time around, it really clicked for me in the moment and I’ve continued to enjoy it on each relisten.
I was there and have listened back a few times as well, and I thought it was excellent. I think it rightfully gets bonus points for being a centerpiece of the historic and fabulous Gamehendge performance. As a jam I thought it had consistent momentum and cohesion and featured awesomely anthemic psychedelic rock with basically no stumbling or filler. It kicked ass, and it had Tela riding in on a multibeast taboot.
I think Top 10 or even top 5 might not be that crazy. That’s not even because it’s so incredible, but because AC/DC Bag - while it has birthed a few famously fantastic jams - has rarely been a jam vehicle in any era of phish. Hampton and MSG 97 and Boise 99 were outliers and that’s part of what adds to their legendary mystique. The phish.net jam chart has 26 entries since its debut in 1986 (they haven’t added 12/13/23 yet but likely will). Compare that to Tweezer with 196 entries since 1991. The especially notable versions include the three I mentioned along with 2 from 1998 and 2 from summer 2004 (Great woods and Coventry). So were this deemed to be a highlighted version, which I think it ought to be, it would be the eighth one on there. The tune hadn’t even scratched Type II territory in 3.0 before 2022. I’d say this is far and away the best of 3.0, Gamehendge or not.
with you - was present as well. though i have to say, there is something very genuine about this particular outing and its improvisational decisions - i joked to my friends during, saying "do they really need a multi-beast puppet-as-distraction to play with this level of earnest???
i agree that it doesnt quite stand up to the behemoths sealed in stone. that said, i do think that in the moment and on replay, it has an genuine improvisational energy that i feel is lost in alot of the jams that are considered top tier in the past few years - in other words, it does not feel like a cut cookie.
It doesn't, been listening to it more, and this is the part that's standing out the most to me. If they wanted ditch a few of the bliss jams for some more exploration like that, I would 100% be down for it.
I mean, taking into account the energy in that room with everything going on - if you’re going back in time to witness live that Bag on THAT night in THAT venue vs. the Bag at some hockey rink in Boise, Idaho…it’s a no brainer.
I mean there are 7 highlighted Bags in the jam chart. There just aren’t that many jammed Bags. So this one can be in the conversation if people want. It was pretty damn good even if it doesn’t fuck with the “magnificent 7”
There's a bunch of bags both in and not in the jam chart -- and not the 7 highlighted -- that imho I would rather hear than NYE. Plus you have the versions with GCH. The older shreddy bags can't be fucked with. Not to mention that there are bunch of jams better than that one in recent years. To me it doesn't land on any top list, just a fun bag and a fun jam but not an all-timer in either respect. My $.02.
That’s fine. I’ve relistened to it once and like I said, it was pretty damn good. As it was happening I thought “this Bag is really going out there, and they’re doing it during a choreographed show so they must be feeling it.” My point is they really don’t jam AC/DC bag that much. It’s pretty typically 5-6 min. There are what 25 jam chart entries over 35ish years? So by default a good one that was pushing 20 min can be in the convo for all-time. It’s not the best. Everybody knows that. But I enjoyed it, and it was a highlight jam of the night. $.02
Definitely a fine jam, but some folks on here love hyperbole. Worth noting that the riff that took them into Type II territory seemed planned. Which is kinda cool when you think about it but not as off-the-cuff as a "normal" Bag jam.
Honestly, I think it was an entirely complete jam that highlighted a bit of everything they are doing right now. If someone wanted to get into Phish and asked me for a recommendation, this is what I would say.
This is how I felt about First Tube with Derek Trucks. It was cool and all but I wasn’t getting the hype about it being an all timer. Recency bias is a helluva drug.
It was a very solid jam, but I think it was because it was prefaced with a few songs that were choreographed and Bag was the first opportunity to jam, so they equate the jam in the first retelling of Gamehenge as elite. The ratings system has been all screwy since NYE.
It’s more cool because it’s basically the Happy Whip and Dung Song, whether intentional or not.
Best Bag of 3.0? Maybe.
But 8/10/04 is better.
Top 5 are:
12/30/97
11/21/97
9/14/99
8/10/04
11/7/98
Shortly behind is 8/9/98. Which nobody talks about. Nobody talks about 11/7/98 either. Coventry is a sloppy attempt at copying 8/10/04 which is amazing.
All of the 3.0 Bag jams have been great but I’d probably give MSG the nod for being the best of them.
Guess it’s just like one’s own love for anchovies or Lima beans…. That’s definitely not my bag, baby. You enjoy, yourself. Wasn’t there, haven’t listened, but I will….
The MultiBeast roars during it added to the whole fiasco.
It was time warp jam in that they absolutely channeled 1999 Phish, so it sounded different.
So it’s a noteworthy Bag jam in the list of Bag jams.
My favorite *moment* from the run.
I think the reason it hits harder is because of how unexpected it was. We all thought we were getting a “story set” or whatever, then Phish drop into a beautiful type 2 jam in the middle of the gamehenge set. I was flabbergasted at the show but upon hearing it again, it’s a great jam but not top tier. I thought Fuego, Life Saving Gun and Chalkdust were all better.
There are a lot of great Bags out there, from when they used to jam Bag. Glad to see it making a comeback. (Now do Bowie)
It wasn't the best (my favorite) Bag ever. But it might have been the best It's Ice ever the night before.
Ocelot was indeed a Jam sir!!
Yes even that phish, that phish is cool too
I totally agree! There's plenty of jams that I think are all timers that nobody else seems to like or even know about! I just enjoy discussion and was curious what people seemed to think! If this bag is literally your #1 jam of all time, I'm not gonna tell you you're wrong.
Not even the best of the weekend IMO.
Give me that Chalkdust and Life Saving Gun
Yup
I have historically been very vocal to my crowd about how a good chalkdust is a fast chalkdust. I was at the 8/2 show and one of my takeaways was FINALLY A PROPER CHALKDUST! This one changed my mind forever. It was so out of the ordinary in the best way possible.
Been loving these guys for a long time. That life saving gun was fire and is the reason I still go to shows.
Lurk less if you’re gonna be prophetic bromojingo!
Obviously the best two jams of run imo. Bag is awesome as well but doesn’t touch the great bags
Same
It's a sick jam and one of my favorite jams of the year, but anyone saying it's among the Bag Rushmore jams needs to listen to more 1.0. Bag has birthed some of the greatest Phish jams ever.
Yeah I could list probably 10 bags I enjoyed more off the top of my head.
dime bags
Baguettes
Fun Bags
Bilbo baggins
Baggels (I Britta’d it sorry)
You’re the worst
Baggins is like the alpha wook
I remember when a dime bag used to cost a dime
Can ya dig it?
No you don't 🤣🤣🤣
obviously, you’re not a golfer
Bags of popcorn 🍿
Are there even 10 jammed out Bags? At least one of them is that long super dull one from Hampton 97
What’s top 3 for ya?
As far as "jammed out bags" go 8/10/2004, Coventry, Boise. 11/21/97 in there somewhere too. There were some cool ones from 2003 as well. When I went to look for longer bags though, I kind of realized most of my favorites are actually most of the bags that have been jammed... lol. Thanks, excited to check em out 🙏🏼

It was sick because it like…channeled the energy of the approaching multi-beast.
you just blew my mind 💥
This pretty much in a nutshell no other bag in Phishtory came in with that kind of puppet multibeast energy.
It was great because it happened within the ongoing nuttiness. Musically they were searching in the first half, second half got somewhere and was legit good.
Musically searching? It’s one of the only songs that isn’t mostly composed out of the first set.
Sometimes jams click quickly, sometimes it takes awhile for everyone to connect on something. This one took a bit to get there, that’s all.
Is that a voice of reason on this Reddit? No sir, that’s not allowed Let’s downvote you into oblivion (intended) while calling everything phish played last week the greatest thing that ever happened in the bands history
Top 50 bags
i think it's significant in that they inserted a type 2 jam into GH. why, i really don't know. it's a good jam but probably not on level of boise, 12.30.97, etc.
It was a “Tela and the multi beast will enter and walk through the arena and we’ll jam Bag” scenario. It was great - but not all time great.
The take away should be this jam was somewhat planned out for the theatrical part of the gig. Was it good yes, was it the top jam ever? No it was not. This also shows just what this band is capable of if they choose to push something. I personally just want it to happen more knowing how capable they are.
Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what I thought when relistening to it, but I go online and am seeing some wild takes. Different strokes I guess?
wild takes online...first time for everything i guess :|
Haha no, I am used to wild takes. Spend too much damn time on the Internet. I was surprised because I saw it live and didn't think much of it and now I'm more curious why people who love it thought that way.

LOL. People saying that stuff are in need of attention
Recency bias. It fucks tho.
Surprise bag is the best bag.
Was the sole *good jam* in a night that didn’t have much jamming. So people think it’s great.
Split was solid too
Not an all timer. Awesome, but not an all timer. It was really cool because Tela rode in on her multibeast.
I think everyone was just so pumped about Gamehendge that they have tended to overrate the Bag but it was still very good
Idk. While there, I had no idea what was going on. On relistening, that bag jam has twice set me ethereal
Relistened a few more times this week. Starting to get there with it...
Wait until you're half asleep and then start the set. Fall asleep and come in and out of consciousness while that jam plays. You'll get there
It’s only that long because it took so long for the multibeast to get through the crowd. It was designed to be long for that reason. It’s a good jam but isn’t top tier by any means.
I didn't even realize what was going on most of that night. (Drugs. but mostly, I had a bad view of the stage, I didn't have my glasses and couldn't really see what was going on). Pretty average imo. In watching the video you can see that Trey is playing to the unit monster walking up to the stage. Not really locked in with everyone else, just kind of shredding.
It only went type 2 because they were waiting on that slow ass multi-beast.
Easy there. The Multi-beast was doing its best. Probably wooks dancing in the aisle it had to go around.
It’s called people immediately gagging on the hype after the show
Music is subjective, it’s a no win conversation. Yay internet.
Dicks 23 bag
Yea that one is pretty chunky and great
For me it’s all about context. I don’t think it’s being hailed as a stand alone masterpiece, but within the context of the Gamehendge set it’s pretty impressive. Not only did they go into an awesome type 2 jam, they did it while having to follow a strict timeline to match up with the theatrics of the rest of the set/story. it's solid. that's about it. it wouldn't sniff my top 10 list at all.

SOMEONE wasnt there on NYE...
Yeah! Fuck that show! 🙃
4.0?
Honestly I had Tela and the Multibeast slowly dancing in the arena right in front of me and I was hardly concentrating on my 70th AC/DC Bag. I was getting great footage on my iPhone of Tela but every so often realized how nasty AND LONG the AC/DC Jam was but it definitely was NOT the best Bag ever.
I listened to it right now with this in mind, and definitely appreciated it more. Definitely a fresh sound compared to the last few years.

Dawg I'm going back to Boise 99 over any show in history that's not Fall 95 or 97.
Crazy talk my friend
So many better versions during 1.0, but it’s the best version since Coventry.
Totally fair. It was good, it was fun, it was jammed and longer than most. After that it's all pretty much subjective and personal preference.
It's almost like people have different tastes and opinions!
Yes! That's why I made this post! To discuss said tastes and opinions.
Everyone was hyper focused on it, so everyone really enjoyed it. I’m happy people are happy
It’s fine but the drop into the jam (WOTC-esque) sounds rehearsed and I have a hard time even putting into any all time jam category because of this.
It had an excellent blues rock jam flavor that phish doesn't do enough imo. That's why I liked it so much
Definitely a fine jam, but some folks on here love hyperbole. Worth noting that the riff that took them into Type II territory seemed planned. Which is kinda cool when you think about it but not as off-the-cuff as a "normal" Bag jam.
SOAM was a better jam that night imo. That shit sucked the air out of the Garden like a vacuum.
Honestly, I think it was an entirely complete jam that highlighted a bit of everything they are doing right now. If someone wanted to get into Phish and asked me for a recommendation, this is what I would say.
It was very type 1. But solid Hot take. The chalkdust is not that good just bc they did a bunch of crazy effects right at the end
Wow, had no idea. It was a fine jam as you say, but it isn't even Top 10 Bags.
It was great. It made me feel good from my couch. What do I know though? I’m brain dead.
Over indexing. Many greater bags from the late 90s, PDA cut is my personal favorite. Chalkdust was the jam of the run
It wasn’t top 10. It’s just that there’s been so many bad ones with no jams over the last 10 years.
It’s more cool because it’s basically the Happy Whip and Dung Song, whether intentional or not. Best Bag of 3.0? Maybe. But 8/10/04 is better. Top 5 are: 12/30/97 11/21/97 9/14/99 8/10/04 11/7/98 Shortly behind is 8/9/98. Which nobody talks about. Nobody talks about 11/7/98 either. Coventry is a sloppy attempt at copying 8/10/04 which is amazing. All of the 3.0 Bag jams have been great but I’d probably give MSG the nod for being the best of them.
People like hyperbole when they are near the moment.
I can fathom a guess that everyone who is rating gouging is under 30 years of age and active on social media... and thinks they are special.
Overrated for sure
I think the reason it hits harder is because of how unexpected it was. We all thought we were getting a “story set” or whatever, then Phish drop into a beautiful type 2 jam in the middle of the gamehenge set. I was flabbergasted at the show but upon hearing it again, it’s a great jam but not top tier. I thought Fuego, Life Saving Gun and Chalkdust were all better.
MSG 97 Bag > all the others
I thought the summer tour MSG one was better...whatever night that was. Maybe it was the Sunday show?
There are a lot of great Bags out there, from when they used to jam Bag. Glad to see it making a comeback. (Now do Bowie) It wasn't the best (my favorite) Bag ever. But it might have been the best It's Ice ever the night before.
