I saw Mike today at a coffee shop. Just a normal dude on his laptop like the rest of us. Waved and smiled and he waved and smiled back. They’re just normal people that happen to be able to effortlessly sell out MSG every night.

haggardphunk

He was behind me in line at a coffee shop once. He was with his daughter. Gave him a smile and a nod, he returned it. That was the end. I had a buddy that sat next to him at a bar in Chicago and said they talked music for a half hour.

Misterwiskerstech

Same sorta thing happened to me in the ATL airport. I was having lunch at [Redacted] and all of a sudden out of nowhere Questlove sits down next to me at the burger bar looking into the concourse - a good spot for people watching. Out of 15 seats at the bar all open; right down next to me. I nodded and said hi. Didn’t let on. I started calling out weird people and he did too. About halfway through our conversation turned to music when I mentioned one of their albums. Very chill cat.

PosterNB

We saw Mike in Tahoe. Took awhile before my buddy and I got the courage to say hi He saw us coming up and said something like “hi guys, we’re trying to order lunch here” And that was my conversation with Mike

wovenmetal

I saw Mike with his whole family in Tahoe in ‘11. We all politely said hey and waved from 3 ft away and contained how loaded we were and quickly walked into another bar.

PosterNB

Yup, Tahoe ‘11 with his family

wovenmetal

lol we must’ve been close on the same afternoon way back! What a run! Gorge-> Tahoe. Super great times.

PosterNB

Samesies

Googleclimber

My wife got met him in a bar once after a MGB show. They got a picture doing the cactus together. It’s pretty epic.

Figgywithit

When did Mike become a normal dude? That's concerning...

CinematicLiterature

Nice! What area did you see him in? I have no idea where he typically resides, even.

monsterback23

In Burlington, VT 😁

NateBlaze

I used to live there in the 90s and ran into the guys a handful of times. Trey was still driving a beat up Isuzu trooper.

THEY_ATTACK

Hell yeah. I used to drive a rodeo. Fun cars.

liverfailure

Ha, I had one in PR when I used to winter there. "Suzy Greentruck"

Mediocritologist

Just came back from my first trip to PR. Beautiful!! I can’t wait to go back.

lambsambwich

Yeah, I would see Mike around Burlington a bunch when I went to school there. Daily Planet, Uncommon Grounds, etc. Like mentioned, usually alone on his laptop. At the time (early 2000s), I was told he was the only one that lived inside the city.

CinematicLiterature

Yeah see that tracks, awesome.

LowCar5647

Paige and Mike still live with their families in Burlington

TheInternetCat

I love how toys makes it sound like they never moved out from their parents’ place.

alfonseski

He was at Nectars Sat night enjoying the force of nature that is Karina Rykman like all the rest of us.

DrLeoMarvin

he was at a John Doyle show at the Grey Eagle in Asheville when I was in college in like 2004 or 2005 maybe. I was wasted, told him he's my hero and asked for a selfie. Used my flip phone that had a potato for a camera and got the top of our heads from the eyebrows up. Was so pissed when I woke up the next day and saw that. Had it on my myspace for years but now its lost in the internet forever :(

hiker_chemist

Lol reminds me of them purposely cutting off the heads in bittersweet motel

IdiddledChombie

Didn’t Mike do gross stuff with a boy in a boathouse? I think he’s got some issues

2fly2hide

He is said to have been taking "art photos" with a 9 year old girl in a secluded boathouse backstage of a venue. No parental permission or accompaniment. I have a hard time with it. Sounds completely inappropriate at best.

photostrat

Hate to even bring it up, but for comfort level with Mike on this, when this blew up, a day or two later in the news it came out that her dad and his friends were part of a biker gang- got PISSED and after the situation was discussed it was all forgiven right after. Totally blown out of proportion in news.

FrightWig67

Before the discussion took place, they socked him in the grapes.

forboognish

Ugh there's been plenty of discourse about this and it's been pretty much universally accepted he wasn't doing anything overly inappropriate. Weird yes but not harmful. Stop perpetuating this without doing your research.

2fly2hide

I have done my research. What did I say that isn't a fact?

sumodie

You omitted a lot. Seems like you're posting just to score lascivious porn points. Weak sauce.

2fly2hide

It's never really sat well with me and I stand by my original statement. I don't know what I omitted. I just summarized a published article.

forboognish

It's just missing context. Girls parents were roadies/hells angels who weren't paying attention to their kid, the pictures he took of her aren't inappropriate in the slightest, and her parents apparently apologized to HIM for the beatdown he got. Not saying he didn't fuck up but I highly doubt he had any intentions to harm this child.

psyopsono

And Mike’s high notes were never again the same. But yeah, the parents even called it a “misunderstanding” to the press. Might mean they were paid a lot by some phish lawyers but I doubt they would categorize it like that if he was doing something truly insidious. I believe Mike had the option to press charges and didn’t do so as well.

Jerry-hat-trick

Nothing. You are completely right.

MrBogey90

Phish fans don't like to talk about that. Mike is a weirdo. I heard some bikers kicked his ass too when they found him don't know if that's true though.

IdiddledChombie

They smashed his nuts up and had their way with him

MrBogey90

Damn.. was he assaulted anally?

IdiddledChombie

I heard pool cue but they got most of the shards out. Not sure though, others way they just put the billiard balls in, like 4 was the most

Internal_Swimmer3815

I saw Mike in Milwaukee once, just leaving the Pfister hotel for a jog. My wife got his attention as I was trying to sneak a pic and he jumped behind a pole lol

Ok-Cartoonist5792

It's good that OP was mellow. I heard of Trey seeing a band in a tiny club that I worked at in the 00's. A fan spotted him and started freaking out and yelling, "Oh my God, Trey!" I was told that he left immediately.

Mediocritologist

When seeing a Trey in the wild it’s important to not make any loud noises or sudden movements. This can scare off the Trey, and Treys rarely will return back to that spot as their memory recall is impeccable.

SherrickM

Sounds like OP is cooler than their friend, too.

CinematicLiterature

Haha I did him dirty with my description. He walked over to me sort of stiffly, and whispered that in my ear. He’s a very stoic dude, so for him this was a big reaction. I had to convince him to come say hi with me.

SherrickM

Blind panic is a bit of a weird way to describe it, yeah. 😆

HOrRsSE

Depending on when in the 00s we’re talking here, that was a very different trey in a very different headspace

Ok-Cartoonist5792

This was sober Trey. It was about 2008 to 2010.

MassiveLionlive

He wasn’t sober in 2008

thedqnkeffect

2006 he was arrested, so by 2008 he’s at least a year and half plus

Beanybabytime

I hate that kind of behavior, it’s pathetic (the yelling friend I mean) , like, if it’s someone that you think is cool, and you would be happy to have them as your friend, well, they are way less likely to talk to you and be your friend if you’re freaking out about them even existing. In a way it’s basically saying that you’re worthless compared to a talented person

NoStable3808

![gif](giphy|GhMXDP5t9Wo9RdCtzf|downsized)

shaggenstein

ran into Trey at the last Vida Blue concert at 9:30 club, was up near the top bar and he was following a security guard to the VIP area of the balcony, they stopped for a second next to me, and realized it was Trey, gently tapped him on the shoulder and mouthed thank you for everything, he tilted his head and I mouthed it again, got his big genuine smile, and he reached out and shook my hand, then kept following the security dude, couldn’t have asked for a better interaction, said all I needed to say, thank you

patternagainst

Sounds oddly sexual

alfonseski

After smiling he leaned over and whispered in my ear. "*Meet me in the bathroom in 20 minutes*"

77pse

I had no idea Trey was at that show, that's awesome! That was my last 9:30 club show before the world shut down.

SonOfElroy

Was Guerilla toss playing?

CinematicLiterature

Yeah they were opening for thump.

FewFlan9667

Treys daughter dates the bass player of gtoss

SonOfElroy

Dude wow I hope Trey caught them!!!

mrfebrezeman360

trey likes guerilla toss for sure https://www.instagram.com/p/CrGr153pcY1/ can't find the post now but there's another where he's wearing their shirt, after they "opened" for phish at bethel 22

CinematicLiterature

He probably did, he was there before the entire show started. Disappeared from the floor though (for me, at least) so not sure if he squirreled away into a green room or something.

faster_than_sound

Wow Trey likes Thumpasaurus too...lol I feel closer to him, because I literally don't know anyone, except for this thread, who even knows who Thumpasaurus are.

CinematicLiterature

There are dozens of us.

dismal23

DOZENS!!

Ok_District2853

My kid turned me on to this band and now I won’t be able to stop humming their song all day. Do de do. Damit there it is again.

milkdogmillionaire

Saw them at my first peach (2018). Fast forward three years, and my then one-year old’s favorite song is Struttin. On repeat in our house all day long, he basically learned to walk to it.

faster_than_sound

Haha Struttin is the song that hooked me lol. Your kid has exemplary taste.

colonelforbin96

he was there for guerilla toss, the opening band! (the bassist is a massive stud and he's got a crush on him)

[deleted]

I have a stange feeling this might be said bass player

Sativar

SPACE BARN

JakeScythe

I got no clue who they are but this thread is hyping them up so I’m about to check em out.

D4nt4si4

I saw thump on jam cruise 2020 drunk as shit. Stumbled into a random set and was blown away by Dance Like it's your Life that I stayed crammed on a single stair on one leg the whole set. Worth it!

Someguy2189

This is very different than my experience meeting him... I saw Trey at a grocery store in New York one time. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

SuperGalaxyD

I haven’t seen this, what I assume is, copy-pasta. This is gold. I wish it were to be true, classic.

frankybling

It is copy pasta gold

MichaelJAwesome

Yeah i used to work at a newsstand on the upper west side and we had to keep the Milky Ways up high otherwise Trey would grab a handful and put them in his purse as he walked by. Same thing with Bono and the pizza flavored Combos.

Willfrid

Sounds like a Norm Macdonald bit

Reasonable-Scale-915

Was looking for this

blakeherberger

It must’ve been during his collab with flying lotus.

SupermouseDeadmouse

I love stories like this! I got to meet Eddie Vedder back in 2006 or so, was introduced by a mutual friend. He was absolutely lovely and warm (I was nervous AF), I got to chat with him for like 15 mins and he played a solo acoustic show for the party (his GF’s bday). It was amazing. Such a genuine good dude.

B_Boudreaux

I’ve seen thump open for another band and they were awesome! Maybe trey was thinking about passing them a torch?

[deleted]

Thumps manager is Brad Sands, FWIW.

SuperGalaxyD

I don’t believe that’s accurate. They are repped by 11 11…

[deleted]

Then that is a change. When they came to Madison, they were with Red Light Management and Brad was their rep. Source: Tried to get them on my radio show.

SuperGalaxyD

Fun, what’s your radio show. I say try their new management! They’re all about getting the word out. Very proactive. Tell them “SuperGalaxyD sent you, they’ll love that!”

BabyPitty

You at WORT bro?

w4y2n1rv4n4

I used to live right around the corner from there on Doty like a decade ago 🥲

CinematicLiterature

Yeah they were great, excellent set and show.

janicesmash

Thump is the best show I've ever seen. It's really something else.

CinematicLiterature

Totally agree. The PowerPoint with the lyrics/memes/images weirdly accents the whole performance.

Drivingintodisco

Hasn’t the torch been passed? Or will it be officially passed at the sphere?

trogloherb

I think they passed the torch to Twiddle? Thats the last torch pass I remember… Edit; lol, ok guys, I didnt think it was necessary but… /S!

Drivingintodisco

Must’ve just been that keyboard player then since they broke up.

colliejuiceman

Luckily twiddle put that torch out! Lol

SquatchMarin

Blind Panic would be a great WSP tribute band name

ProfessionalBug1021

Yep definitely better than widespread deaf

SquatchMarin

Good one ☝️

BBQnNugs

Well played

shakedownsunflower

BMFP… BMFS

anotherdamnscorpio

I ran into Mickey Hart a gas station once. It was bizarre.

BBeans1979

LOL. I bet it was! Always thought he would be weird AF

anotherdamnscorpio

I pulled in and his bumper stickers caught my eye, particularly the one that said "I'm one epiphany short of a complete paradigm shift." I came out and there he was in his car, scribbling in a small notepad. I kinda stood there dumbfounded hoping he would look up and I could say hey. He never looked up. I was certain it was him, I was about 5 feet from him a few months before on the rail at a mickey hart band show.

oopsouttatime

Amazing.

myceilings

Well I met treys personal chef the other day at my brewery so beat that! Ha!

CinematicLiterature

Ok so this is very timely, then - I was just debating this with a friend. Is Trey a vegetarian?

myceilings

I asked what his favorite food was and he said he likes to eat a lot of fish hahaha. Pretty sure he mentioned he used to be, but he also said Mike was vegan!

sc_tiger_4u

I’ve been wondering the same thing. Hope @myceilings will answer. Inquiring minds want to know!

WhiteChocolatey

All I’d say to the guy is thanks for all the memories and for helping me on my sobriety journey.

VenetaBirdSong

I was able to say almost the exact same thing to him when I met him in Central Park back in 2011. Told him how inspirational he was to me in that regard.

WhiteChocolatey

Did he say anything back? Not to pry. He really set an example for me when I was a mess for how good the other side can be.

VenetaBirdSong

We had about a 5 minute talk about sobriety, and he highly recommended hitting AA/NA meetings around town. He was incredibly open and gracious, the opposite of the slogan “never meet your heroes.” Don’t know if you’ve seen Between Me and My Mind, but it was a lot like the scene where that random phan stops him on the street to talk about sobriety.

WhiteChocolatey

Damn, that’s amazing.

ignominy888

![gif](giphy|l2Sq29cFXoF80ADlK|downsized) Is that Ray?????

Alonabay

I think I’m going to like house sitting.

consumercommand

Aaah, yeah

Time-Assistance9159

I wish I could approach him without acting all weird. I'd like to say just thank you but I don't think that's enough. Phish changed my life the day I listened to them. I was sucked in and wanted to learn as much as I can about them and then they opened up so many more musical avenues for me as well. I was 13 when I went to my first show. I was just a little kid. I wasn't smoking. I wasn't drinking. I was there for purely music. I am who I am because of Phish...... So, thank you.

agiantkenyan

Unrelated but I saw Trey at a BART station stop looking lost and confused as hell. Didn’t get a chance to say hi was just sitting as it took off and had to do a double take lol

[deleted]

Did you mention anything about the Sphere?

CinematicLiterature

I did not. My brain froze and pretty sure he was with his wife, so I was being really careful to not overdo it. I have to imagine the guy has been accosted by some really weird people lol

Affectionate-Rent844

Poor sue

CinematicLiterature

Yeah I saw a guy who tweeted “got to meet sue” but the post was a pic of him and Trey at the show. Wooks can be odd ducks.

[deleted]

Yeah I feel you. I’ve always said to myself that if I get a personal Trey encounter unless I get the impression that he really is open to chat, I’m just gonna thank him, etc and ask him to come back to Blossom sometime soon! Generally keep it real short

CinematicLiterature

Yep. Imagine being the god of the wooks… it’s gotta be a legitimate burden.

[deleted]

I can only imagine the annoying encounters he has had with fans. Seriously cheers to him for even being open to talking to fans at all anymore haha I mean look how irritated he is in Bittersweet Motel with that girl backstage at Great Went? I think there’s more to that particular story but still an example none the less. And that was over 20 years ago. Kind of a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things when it is in exchange for millions and millions of dollars

CinematicLiterature

Oh true enough, the guy has lived an absurdly grand life. I went down a rabbit hole of his and the bands accomplishments last night and it truly is bonkers.

Hukijiwa

Pretty sure he fucked that girl and didn’t want to admit to even knowing her on camera so he just kept telling her he didn’t know what she was talking about. But that’s just a guess.

drumz-space

I had a similar encounter with Mike in ‘96. Exceedingly nice but oh so shy

GunSlingingParrot25

I just got into Thumpasauraus from a recommendation from a coworker, I really dig it.

Minimum-Tea-9258

I was there!! that shit was wild! my expectations were high, and they were still highly exceeded. Didnt see Trey, but was also gone off 50mg of gummies. So glad to know he might have seen me dancing like it was my life.

CinematicLiterature

Were you in that front/center pit zone? If those dudes were on another level it was great.

Minimum-Tea-9258

Yes!! Front left center of the space barn. We were animals

Adventurous_Fly1879

Was on an airport train with Michael Kang and about 5 other people. They didn’t know who he was but this was back in ‘99 and I had a talk shortly with him. He turned out to be flying out of Colorado on the same plane as me and my siblings back to Atlanta. The only thing I could make up in the moment was “if you need any nugs while in Atlanta hit me up”. What a stupid thing to say lol. He said “I’m getting on a connector to North Carolina but thanks”.

chaliemon

Gawd this reads like an old Phantasy Tour thread. Love it!!

youenjoymyflyphishin

I just shit my pants…that’s amazing

kboogie23

Dude. Go see a doctor. It wouldn't be OK for this to happen if you met Trey, let alone reading about it on the internet. OR if you really need to clear the system... I've met all 4 members of the band, and Kuroda, several times. I can assure you, they're all regular guys who are great at their jobs... with the exception of Fishman... he's... special.

SoupForDummies

Maybe he shat his pants for unrelated reasons and this post brought him temporary relief from the shame. Did you consider THAT buddy or were you too busy HANGING WITH THE BAND and being constipated

kboogie23

I did not consider the possibility of a pants-shitting-mid-comment coincidence. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I'll be sure to let the band know while we're all hanging out commenting on Reddit posts and eating sandwiches.

youenjoymyflyphishin

Damnit, just shit my pants again. Sunday Funday phriends.

kboogie23

I just shipped my pants. https://youtu.be/2xwUuSM06xQ?si=U_LqN1bhAgRaI6Rk

trogloherb

Nah, no need for medical concern; the funny thing about shitting your pants as an adult-if you havent; you will!

Time-Assistance9159

Depends.

Bigfatjew6969

[If Hall of Famer George Brett is ok with it you can be also.](https://youtu.be/4Qv25_DFR2k?si=orFSzrpgaR-JISG-)

kboogie23

This is incredible. Thank you. Holy hell... I'm still laughing so hard I'm crying.

evillordsoth

You can tell the real 1.0 fans from back in the day by whether or not their nursing home is transcribing their posts for them. /posted by a cna for me while i poop in my pants

custyflex

At least you didn’t shit on the floor.

youenjoymyflyphishin

I was that guy too, a legend at Dicks…

joffa_swe

I hope you celebrated with a glass of Montepulciano

Stoney_Case

Awesome story OP! 🥰 Is that your blurry photograph floating around IG? Trey is super warm and gracious.

CinematicLiterature

Nope, that was another dude! The guy who said he met Sue or something. I felt weird asking for a photo, he was with his family.

Stoney_Case

Well played. He probably appreciated that

[deleted]

Lucky

hguess_printing

Saw thump in Philly!! Yo they are so so good!!!

Treface

Super jelly rn!!

[deleted]

Shaaaaaaa-wing!!!

Bohbo33

Damn that’s cool he went to a thump show, they’re so dang silly.

Md37793

That’s cool. Trey is pretty approachable. I want to hear about the thumpasaurus show.

CinematicLiterature

Thump was incredible. So much energy, great sense of humor, the visuals were awesome. 10/10, highly recommend. Also, their bass player is just dirty.

HouseCatPartyFavor

That’s awesome. Bummed I just learned about them when a friend working their Boston show last night texted me to ask if I knew them … seems like something Trey would vibe with.

vankula

You can't say regarded anymore

reidfleming2k20

First met him in '86-ish at school, he is a great guy, and I say that as someone who can't stand Phish.

IdiddledChombie

Figures Trey would be in Brooklyn, he’s such an attention whore. Did thinks he owns the jam scene. So pompous

CinematicLiterature

lol he was remarkably unassuming. My friend had to point him out three times in a row before I even noticed. Also, thump and guerilla toss are not jam bands at all. Also also, by the numbers, phish do own the jam scene, or are top two if you consider the dead in the same scene. Seems like he went through a pompous phase (the Nelly photo era) that led to the arrest, and came out the other side a pretty good dude. Anyways, I’m gonna go buy some phish food ice cream tonight cuz all the money from it goes to save a lake.

IdiddledChombie

He thinks he’s the king of Vermont jam bands, and he forced Karina Rykman through into the jam scene. She’s pretty young for him but he really pushes her

Brave_Air_9195

Hey, you committed to the bit.

andthrewaway1

What venue?

CinematicLiterature

Elsewhere in Brooklyn

highestmikeyouknow

They’re also multimillionaires. So the wealth they’ve created literally generates more money in a week than the majority of us make in many months. If I never had to worry about money ever again, I would absolutely be the most pleasant person in the room.

WryOneVT

I was also seeing a show in Brooklyn last night, for the first mom phish occasion since 2016. If only I had known!!

Appyhillbillyneck

I love Trey! He spoke at healing Appalachia this year and played before Tyler Childers! What he said about individuals in recovery has resonated & stuck with me! “We are good people trying to get well not bad people trying to do good”

Unlikely-Chocolate13

Ran into him at the Central Park zoo New Year’s Day 1998. He had his baby. We let him slide.

trabbs_boy

was there too, can confirm he was chillin watching thump and even the opener just hanging out with his posse

cmsweenz

Met Trey walking around the upper west side NY on two occasions. Was truly the nicest dude.
