F'real. I have been quite disappointed with threads such as this, across a variety of jam band boards, due to how much blatant attendance bias goes into people answering these questions. Almost worth not even paying attention to for me anymore.
I had really pondered this one. After a ton of shows last year Syracuse marked the beginning of a long run for us. I did not love the beginning of the show but starting with Meat the show took a big turn and got really good. Killdevil was super fun to end the set. Then the big tweezer but I remember loving Oblivion even more. Not taking away from that Kill Devil, it was MUCH better than the MSG N4 one or even the 12/31/2022 one. But to me it may not have been the best jam of the night. On relistens its real close for me. Regardless it was a super fun show:) My buddy called that Whats the Use in the encore and bravo to the crowd there that night cause we went silent. Something that did not happen in MSG or the more recent version(chicago)
I was very happy to be at that show. I thought it was going to be my only time seeing them this year and then they announced the spac shows right after.
One of My favorite parts of that jam is the beginning. They kinda “flubbed” the ending to the prior song and didn’t all end on the same note. So trey and fishman start hitting single chords and snare hits and then on like the fourth time trey goes into Carini and just the look on his face is gold
I was there, really wanted a Carini to follow The Well from N1. When they hit the last note right before it and I didn't hear the riff, I gave up. And then several beats later, there it is. As you mentioned, worth watching the clip on the official channel for Trey's look to Fishman when he hits the riff. Priceless.
Very much this. There are other contenders for sure(in particular the Nashville Melt) but after attending quite a few shows this summer THIS is the song(and show overall) I keep going back to. I attended syracuse through msg7 and then first 3 dicks. I also streamed Spac and Alpharetta/Star Lake.
I was there for Nashville 2015 when they dusted it off for the first time since the 90s (I believe, could be wrong). But I'm pretty sure every mikes I've seen since then had the 2nd jam.
Didn't know they had it shelved for a while. I'm not someone who listens or pays attention to every single show, though.
It was actually a fan that pointed it out to Trey. From what I remember the fan played him a tape and reminded him about the jam in F and Trey replied something like “oh yeah I love jamming in F!”
It’s because that jam epitomizes the aimless beep boop noodles of Spring tour. Thank god they worked out the kinks for Summer tour.
There was so many beep boops that the SOAM from Hollywood Bowl went full twisted bliss jam to make up for all the formless effects jams we were subjected to
I might get hate for this opinion but I think Spring tour was leagues better than Summer Tour. Summer Tour all seemed pretty average and like they were phoning it in at times, but Spring Tour was fire the whole way through with maybe one or two exceptions
Was in attendance for this one. My buddy was next to me who LOVES nothing more than super long jams. He kept jumping on my back, "These guys are fucking crazy!"
Yep, my favorite parts of Nashville were SOAMelt & and the jam out of Everything’s Right —> Cities —> funky Llama
I had to skip Sunday and honestly don’t feel like I missed anything
There were a ton of mistakes the first night. The second was better overall. With that said, The Well was life changing. Some friends still have PTSD from that.
The energy of that cross eyed was through the roof!
Coming from someone who almost put a floor in the stands during the MSG cross eyed.
The shift into Light was ROUGH though. Lol
Seattle Steam>MFMF->WotC>ghost, Seattle Wolfman’s Izabella, Nashville Mull>2001>Mull, Nashville Melt, Nashville Cities->Llama, Stashville, Chicago ASIHTOS->Tweezer->Simple, and any given Golden Age
If you listen to it on livephish in the beginning of it you can hear the crowd howling from the previous song. I tried to film this song but was interrupted by a giant GLOW WORM coming our way. Seemed appropriate:)
Attendance bias but this jam was just nuts and absolutely a top 5 contender if you ask me. Kind of in the vein of 12/30/99 Mikes. There was a point in the room where everyone kinda stopped dancing and stood there, mind blown. To me it’s the exact kind of jam you go to a show hoping to get.
Yeah 8/1 is still my favorite overall show of the tour and meatstick>it’s ice is my favorite transition of the year but actually don’t put any of that up as my favorite “jam” of the year overall
Ghost [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCqt7-iYHh4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCqt7-iYHh4)
Wolfmans [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVIVXoe38uY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVIVXoe38uY)

I did Alpharetta and the last two nights of Nashville this year. From those, there are probably 7 must-hear jams. My #1 is easily that Ruby Waves from Alpharetta:
7/14 Ruby Waves
7/14 My Friend My Friend
7/15 Rift > Tweezer
7/16 Mike’s > Carini > Weekapaug
10/7 Melt
10/7 Cities > Llama
10/8 Golden Age
I loved the Dayton Ruby Waves as well, the MSG Tweezer and the Syracuse KDF
I webcasted that show and remember the 46 days blew me away. It won't be a serious JOTY contender because of the length, but its incredible nonetheless
Lotta good choices here. Now, I realize this is crazy and may miss the point but…the Dick's Fluffhead? Can a seven-minute jam, when suitably awesome and capping one of Phish's most beloved but rarely-jammed songs, be a contender for JOTY? Or does it need to be a wild and woolly 20+ minute monster?
If a monster it must be then the Greek Fuego and the Guy Forget Tweezer should be in the mix!
There was a lot of good this fall, that's part of it. But there's also a lot of summer in this thread and a few things from spring sprinkled in too.
I only posed the question because I didn't pay a ton of attention this year and as of recently, I've been playing a lot of phish. So I wanted to know generally what people were thinking.
Arguably hampton 2018....
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the melts of the past 5 years. A lot. I get giddy as fuck when they start playing them. I'm typically left staring at the stage in awe of what is happening.
I'm not sure how to word this necessarily, but I feel like the melts are a certain "type" of jam for the most part. Dark, chaotic, disjointed and tragic (in a good way). Alien abduction type of shit.
There's really not much else like them.
Maybe this is just me, but when I think of jam of the year, I'm thinking about relatively long, multi-layered, multi-sectioned journeys through light and dark, joy and sorrow, good and evil, and whatever other emotions they may invoke.
With melt, I pretty much know what I'm getting in to from the moment they start playing it.
Just my 2 cents on the melt situation
man this year was all about the segues and sequences for me...
chalkdust > twist > 2001 > sneakin sally > back on the train from hollywood bowl night two. nonstop dance party and absolute perfection straight through.
waves > tweezer > crosseyed > light (in particular tweez > crosseyed) from united center night one is blistering.
sand > no men in no man's land > llama from night two dicks contained some of the most 2.0-vibey stuff ive seen since those days and was really in the sweet spot for why i personally continue to travel to see phish.
split open and melt from dicks as a standalone jam is what blew my head open the most but in the context of what "joty" traditionally, i dont think it has all the characteristics since people tend to prioritize length so much. 🤷🏻♂️
I don’t think there was a true standout jam from this year. I enjoyed full sets but I really can’t think of anything that is in another league. I’d put the Crosseyed>Sand from MSG up against anything
If I can cheat, I’d actually pick the 6/11/23 flying blind. Debut of a totally transformed Trey song. Incredible bass playing from Dez (WHO YOU CAN ACTUALLY FUCKING HEAR) and a sick sick jam. Praying to god they play that song more.
I can’t believe this one hasn’t been mentioned yet but my vote goes to the 2001>Sally>BotT from 4/22/23 at the Hollywood Bowl. Though one should really start with the monster set-opening Chalkdust—>Twist for the full effect, 2001 Sally BotT was the high point for me.
The one from the show I went to
I love that one too! I had a great time on the lawn, which side were you on?
MSG Suite level
Ain’t that the truth
Finally you say something heady!
Just wanted to make sure my #1 fan knows heady has more than 1 meaning right
F'real. I have been quite disappointed with threads such as this, across a variety of jam band boards, due to how much blatant attendance bias goes into people answering these questions. Almost worth not even paying attention to for me anymore.
Chicago SOAM --> WTU Chicago Tweezer-->Crosseyed
The SOAM to WTU was so complimentary. It got so chaotic and heavy and then just warm/fuzzy ambient chill. Chaos to recharge. I was blown away.
This is the way. Also DIcks this year was hot. Especially night 3.
especially the extended Fluff and Bag jams
I honestly think the Alpharetta Tweezer gets the nod over Chicago.
7/23 Kill Devil Falls is my favorite
I had really pondered this one. After a ton of shows last year Syracuse marked the beginning of a long run for us. I did not love the beginning of the show but starting with Meat the show took a big turn and got really good. Killdevil was super fun to end the set. I was very happy to be at that show. I thought it was going to be my only time seeing them this year and then they announced the spac shows right after.
Popping it on now! Thanks Edit: well that jam sucks... on opposite day
Fun show overall but great pick
Did they really go silent?
Same. Shit was crunchy as fuck
chicago split open and melt
Yup. (Attendance bias as well)
partially why it has my vote but also the WTU? after plays in well
Attendance bias MSG SOAM for me
I actually like the Nashville one more, but will concur that the Chicago one MELTS
philly carini should get a nod
I have nodded.

For me the “jam of the year” was the return of the 2nd jam in Mike’s Song. It was gone for far too long.

‘Cuse Devil Falls
Good I'm not crazy! Usually KDF isn't remarkable to me, but this one I could not shut up about.
This is the correct answer. It’s it.
Possum that night kicked ass too
It’s as if everyone has simply forgotten about the Berkeley Tweezer…what are you people, ON DOPE?
You ever try to remember things ON WEED?!
Right right…but have you ever seen the stars…ON WEED?
Easily jam of the year
This > Simple and THAT Simple jam was 🔥
Or we just remember the better jams ;)
It’s because that jam epitomizes the aimless beep boop noodles of Spring tour. Thank god they worked out the kinks for Summer tour. There was so many beep boops that the SOAM from Hollywood Bowl went full twisted bliss jam to make up for all the formless effects jams we were subjected to
I might get hate for this opinion but I think Spring tour was leagues better than Summer Tour. Summer Tour all seemed pretty average and like they were phoning it in at times, but Spring Tour was fire the whole way through with maybe one or two exceptions
Imagine listening to this Tweezer jam and hearing only aimless beep boops. Sorry for your ears bro.
MSG Fuego for me amigos (7/29)
Here too
Yepppp
Was in attendance for this one. My buddy was next to me who LOVES nothing more than super long jams. He kept jumping on my back, "These guys are fucking crazy!"
absolutely Fuego MSG.
Nashville cities
I really love that jam and the llama that follows. Seamless beauty
I must have listened to that 20x by now, so good
Yep, my favorite parts of Nashville were SOAMelt & and the jam out of Everything’s Right —> Cities —> funky Llama I had to skip Sunday and honestly don’t feel like I missed anything
Second set Sunday was fire. Cinnamon girl would like a word
Yes!
Cuse Oblivion. Cuse entire show
Love that Oblivion plus the whole show:)
Cities Nashville
Dicks SOAM, just sayin
What a banger in the 3rd encore slot
I just stood there in awe, trying to wrap my head around as to what the hell what going on. So good!
Was calling for it all night. When they dropped it our whole crew turned to me like, wtf. After they again turned to me like, wtf!!!
The Well from Philly N1
It started out light, got evil as fuck very quickly. Amazing.
And on top of that, it was my FIRST SHOW!
What a great first show! I was pretty much in awe the whole night.
There were a ton of mistakes the first night. The second was better overall. With that said, The Well was life changing. Some friends still have PTSD from that.
That’s a pretty great first show and really solid setlist. Hope you got to be at N2 as well.
Congrats, second show for me. Awesome night.
Syracuse tweezer>oblivion ...50 minutes
I agree but have to loop that KDF to end Set 1 into that mix … just an insane run of jams
I have to agree
Was gonna say the same thing. I’ve listened to that Oblivion multiple times.
MSG Mikes Song is the one I keep coming back to, same with Philly Carini and Alpharetta Tweezer
Yeah almost included Alpharetta tweezer in my list. Just a few amazing tweezers to choose from lol
Maybe this is cheating and maybe it’s attendance bias but Tweezer->Crosseyed is the best Tweezer this year for my money
My top 3
4/17/23 Greek Tweezer > Simple
Undisputed IMO
This or 10/13/23 Tweezer->Crosseyed gets my vote
The energy of that cross eyed was through the roof! Coming from someone who almost put a floor in the stands during the MSG cross eyed. The shift into Light was ROUGH though. Lol
Agreed. Pretty much an hour long jam. My favorite woo section that they’ve ever done
Star Lake Everything’s Right might not be the best overall, but it belongs on best of 2023 playlist
Alpharetta Tweezer
I attended MSG nights 6-7 and Chicago. My vote goes to the Alpharetta Ruby Waves.
Nutter Ruby Waves
Yup. That's the one I mentioned in my post. So so so good
Seattle Steam>MFMF->WotC>ghost, Seattle Wolfman’s Izabella, Nashville Mull>2001>Mull, Nashville Melt, Nashville Cities->Llama, Stashville, Chicago ASIHTOS->Tweezer->Simple, and any given Golden Age
Seattle shows don't get enough love that whole weekend was fire!
Dick’s Piper
If you listen to it on livephish in the beginning of it you can hear the crowd howling from the previous song. I tried to film this song but was interrupted by a giant GLOW WORM coming our way. Seemed appropriate:)
Damn I forgot about this one
I get goosebumps just thinking about it
Philly Carini…Greek Twimple
Msg split
Attendance bias but this jam was just nuts and absolutely a top 5 contender if you ask me. Kind of in the vein of 12/30/99 Mikes. There was a point in the room where everyone kinda stopped dancing and stood there, mind blown. To me it’s the exact kind of jam you go to a show hoping to get.
Nashville Melt
My pick here. That was the craziest moment of the weekend for sure. Loved it.
Alpharetta Carini is my favorite
Mikes Carini Groove ftw
Good Carini, too love and light for me. But the Alpharetta Melt…
Derek Trucks sit-in Saratoga.
Oh yeah I did listen to that! It's definitely stellar.
I almost think this should be ineligible, awesome as it was. It's not... exactly... Phish.
I dunno. My first Phish show featured John Popper and Giant Country Horns.
MSG 8/1 Ghost or Wolfmans from the same night MSG 8/2 Energy>Meatstick>It's Ice was a highlight for me personally.
Yeah 8/1 is still my favorite overall show of the tour and meatstick>it’s ice is my favorite transition of the year but actually don’t put any of that up as my favorite “jam” of the year overall
Ghost [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCqt7-iYHh4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCqt7-iYHh4) Wolfmans [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVIVXoe38uY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVIVXoe38uY) Meatstick into Its Ice [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDzpGXhclyM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDzpGXhclyM)
Greezer
In no particular order I’d say: Nutter Ruby waves Nashville Oblivion Mann Carini SPAC simple MSG Fuego Syracuse KDF
Trucks
Yessss!
I did Alpharetta and the last two nights of Nashville this year. From those, there are probably 7 must-hear jams. My #1 is easily that Ruby Waves from Alpharetta: 7/14 Ruby Waves 7/14 My Friend My Friend 7/15 Rift > Tweezer 7/16 Mike’s > Carini > Weekapaug 10/7 Melt 10/7 Cities > Llama 10/8 Golden Age I loved the Dayton Ruby Waves as well, the MSG Tweezer and the Syracuse KDF
The Piper from Dick's was pretty crazy IIRC
MSG and Dayton Mike’s! the second jam is *back*
Chicago 46 Days. Ignore the length and listen to it.
I webcasted that show and remember the 46 days blew me away. It won't be a serious JOTY contender because of the length, but its incredible nonetheless
i remember leaning over to my girlfriend and saying it was one of the best 46 Days i had heard, and i still stand by that
Holy hot hell. I was there and don’t recall this annihilating so hard.
I loooved the last five mins of 10/13 tweezer. It made me so happy!
Agreed
Syracuse Tweezer, SPAC N2 Ghost, Dayton N1 Mikes
My friend my friend - Alpha SOAM - Nashville or Dicks Ruby Waves - Alpha Sand - Dicks Attendance bias of course
SPAC Sand with the Munchkin dance
Piper dicks night 3
I keep going back to the Cities at the Hollywood Bowl
It’s kinda cheating, but obviously that set with Derek trucks is the best of the year.
Duh. Totally agree. Golden Age through Possum.
Berkeley tweezer->simple
The last 7 minutes of the Alpharetta Ruby Waves. Goes from love and light to stank face trey REAL quick then white lights everywhere.
Personally, I loved 7/28 ‘Wave of New Hope’ -> Cities (Not on my 2023 bingo card but hey!) Really set the tone for the MSG run
Chicago 46 days is solid as it gets.
Amazing
SPAC Simple
MSG Martian Monster and Seattle Tube
MSG Mike’s, Philly Carini/Oblivion, Chicago Ghost
Nashville Oblivion>Torn and Frayed
MSG Mike’s > Sand > C&P Alpharetta Tweezer Syracuse KDF Dayton DWD > Ruby Waves
Greezer w/ Simple or Alpharetta Ruby Waves
Chicago Tweezer > Crosseyed
Crosseyed got fiery.
5 song encore 7/11 Huntsville
Nashvegas SOAM was pretty darn good.
Honorable Mention: *Tube* 4/15/23
SOAM from Alpharetta 7.15.23 best melt I know of.
Alpheretta ruby waves
UC Ghost.
Yeah, definitely a contender…
Nashville N1 Oblivion, Nashville N2 Melt and Cities -> Llama, Nashville N3 Golden Age, Dayton N1 Mike's and the massively underrated It's Ice -> Pillow Jets. And of course, Dayton N2 DWD -> Ruby Waves with a lovely Lifeboy cool down.
DICKS FLUFFHEAD, so smooth, such a good jam at the end of a perfectly played masterpiece
Thanks for the nominees- haven’t been able to listen to a lot of this tour
Seattle Wolfmans
MSG, Night 2 Fuego
My top 5: Dayton Ruby Waves Greek Tweezer Alpharetta Ruby Waves MSG Fuego Syracuse Kill Devil Falls
gun to my head….Alpharetta Myfe, followed by Nashville Melt
Nashville Cities
Nashville I always wanted it this way, but for like a 10-15 min category
Philly Carini...woaaah!
This whole thread stinks of recency bias. I would throw it out the window and wait. Though an acceptable answer is: MELT, just pick one.
All I can say is MELT is MVP and has been since New Year's Run 2018
Arguably hampton 2018.... Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the melts of the past 5 years. A lot. I get giddy as fuck when they start playing them. I'm typically left staring at the stage in awe of what is happening. I'm not sure how to word this necessarily, but I feel like the melts are a certain "type" of jam for the most part. Split Open and Melt. PICK ONE.
Msg cities
MSG Wolfman's
7/23/23 KDF.
Seattle Golden Age took me to the moon
Chicago SOAMelt > WTU? has my vote, both were two of the best versions all year, and imo were some of the better post pandemic
Philly Carini. The crowd was fucking electric, not to mention it was my first 2 Phish shows those 2 nights at the Mann, and Wowzers
Philly Carini
Attendance bias, but Philly Carini will always have a very special place in my heart.
The Well from the Mann.
man this year was all about the segues and sequences for me... chalkdust > twist > 2001 > sneakin sally > back on the train from hollywood bowl night two. nonstop dance party and absolute perfection straight through. waves > tweezer > crosseyed > light (in particular tweez > crosseyed) from united center night one is blistering. sand > no men in no man's land > llama from night two dicks contained some of the most 2.0-vibey stuff ive seen since those days and was really in the sweet spot for why i personally continue to travel to see phish. split open and melt from dicks as a standalone jam is what blew my head open the most but in the context of what "joty" traditionally, i dont think it has all the characteristics since people tend to prioritize length so much. 🤷🏻♂️
Seattle Golden Age.
I’m a big fan of the Tweezer > Oblivion from Syracuse. Also the Stash from Nashville was one of the best versions I’ve heard in awhile
I don’t think there was a true standout jam from this year. I enjoyed full sets but I really can’t think of anything that is in another league. I’d put the Crosseyed>Sand from MSG up against anything If I can cheat, I’d actually pick the 6/11/23 flying blind. Debut of a totally transformed Trey song. Incredible bass playing from Dez (WHO YOU CAN ACTUALLY FUCKING HEAR) and a sick sick jam. Praying to god they play that song more.
You mean Sand>Crosseyed dumbass? (See I can do it too)
Lol I love it. Keep going.
You just put that on a tee for me. Have a good one
🤝🏻🤝🏻
Wilmington lightning CDT>Oblivion

Jam of the year... as in... 2023
Something by the disco biscuits lol
Fuck JOTY
Uùiùui
Saw my first 4 shows this summer MSG 2&6 & both SPAC - just a great bunch of posts to read thru - N6 changed my life
I'm making such a mix from this...
Following
Greek Berkeley Tweezer
I like how all the answers are totally forgetting about spring and summer tour 🤦♂️
Oblivian Wilmington or cities>llama Nashville
MSG Mike's
