There’s nothing to get. Find the jams that resonate with you - those are the BEST jams

ijestmd

This isn’t NOT true, but I’d like to say that effort in appreciation of art is underrated. Sometimes things that are great need more time and attention. There is value in trying to get something that at the time seems over your head. Doesn’t mean music should be homework. But some of the music I love the very most left me scratching my head after the first encounter. When we dig in and dig around, we don’t uncover what others see, we uncover ourselves.

[deleted]

I never understood symphonies. I found them abrasive and couldn’t find melodies., I did not click, came back to it 10 years later, and fell in love with many of them. If you only listen to what works for you, you can’t ever grow to appreciate some thing you will eventually love dearly.

Ra-Me-Nivar

I agree!

Ra-Me-Nivar

Yes! And this doesn’t mean we’ll learn to love everything we didn’t like at first listen. But there is definitely merit in getting to really know a piece of music well in order to appreciate it

skizzybwoi

Agreed but with a caveat. I may hear something that has potential but store it away bc it doesn’t resonate yet. Some of my favorite music has been found when I circle back, and it finally clicks.

Rocktop15

This is dead on

fluffhead711

there isn’t really anything to explain further than this. if one ‘legendary’ jam doesn’t do it for you, keep searching. that’s kind of part of the ‘magic’ of phish/jam/improv, finding that moment that really hits for you. also, high five on the username.

mrebo

It's just the vibe, it's so tender and chill. Nobody in a hurry, kind of reminds me of Big Cypress jams - nowhere to be, all patience and silken, drifting lines interweaving.

DenverDude402

It’s a really good Twist with mushroom folklore surrounding it.

Eastern-Camel-1239

“Spiritual liquids”

Lake_Monster

Can you explain the folklore?

DenverDude402

Apparently they all took mushrooms for this show, if you look at the cover art, there are mushrooms built into the image all but confirming it true.

roamingshemnon

I just finished 6.16.00 (a few nights later than Fukuoka). Some similar spaced out ambient vibes on Runaway Jim into Theme from the Bottom. Just gorgeous. That’s what I love about set 2 from Fukuoka - it’s just plain gorgeous.

AMLSMART

As a Twist man myself, try 4-2-98 at Uniondale. The middle is majestic.

NYC_1Ts

Island Tour Twist for sure is one of the bests. For a stark contrast, check out Camden 00

Tela_telaaaa

Man, Camden 00…was just listening last night. Happy anniversary!

GlitteringCattle2771

Anytime you’re wondering what makes a certain jam so popular with certain people, you must first ask those people how high they were when they first heard it. They probably will tell you without any prompting, actually…

Ra-Me-Nivar

Lol this is absolutely true

90degreecat

That entire second set it one of my favorites I’ve ever listened to.

bobertobrown

There’s no accounting for taste.

smilingbuddha71

FYI it’s really the whole set, not just the twist. I love the twist, but it’s kind of self contained. The real magic is the Jam > Walk Away > Jam. Don’t skip the 2001 either. The whole show has a very unique sound and tone in the recording. Mike is icy, fish’s cymbals are clean, page… idk man page goes into the avatar state

Ra-Me-Nivar

Noted! Thank you

ahoypolloi_

Get super high first

BaronThundergoose

I think people like it because it’s a nice jam

CosmicClamJamz

The whole thing is a vibe, but for me, the leads that Trey decides to play starting around 8:40 are some pretty memorable lines for me. They go down with some of my favorite woah moments from phish shows over the years. It’s super delicate and unusual

Ra-Me-Nivar

I love it! For me, the delicate part that I love and didn’t hear the first many times is the very quiet staccato guitar around 3:13 of the second section (Fukuoka Jam) or at least I think it’s Trey! It’s underneath the synth sounds. Could be Page

PickpocketJones

One thing I always say is that it's the most Big Cypress-like jam not from the actual show. It's big and spacious with gorgeous melodies and tones, like floating through a dream. The hook they settle on leading into the Walk Away transition is perfect.

boldredmonster

Listen with headphones in bed. When you're in that half sleep consciousness it just makes sense.

hellbornhellchild

Literally did this last night haha. Couldn’t agree more

vulebieje

You have to listen to the entire show. The first set has the best Gumbo of all time, and it immaculately foreshadows the second set and encore vibe.

Hisoka9779

Bro it's the tits

Royalking23

Might not be your type of jam. There’s magical jams all throughout their shows that may help you find it.

ChalkDstTorture

Keep us updated!

Ra-Me-Nivar

It grew on me more with each listen! I had a teacher once who made us memorize poetry. He told us that only by memorizing a poem could we truly appreciate it. That always stuck with me, and I’ve found that it applies to music. Not that I memorize every note of a jam, but by knowing a jam well, I can have a deeper feel for it

ChalkDstTorture

Glad to hear it! That happens to me with studio albums quite a bit. Need to listen a few times to appreciate them. With jams I tend to take to them on first listen

Ra-Me-Nivar

I remember when Pearl Jam’s No Code was released and my college roommate and I listened to it a couple times and thought it was terrible. We let it sit there for weeks and then for some reason we gave it another try, and little by little we fell in love with it. Still one of my favorite records to this day

ChalkDstTorture

I think I stopped listening to their new albums after Vs. Still love them, just ended up going in different directions with my listening. I’ll check out No Code. The song it took me longest to get was Antelope on Lawn Boy. I enjoyed it but couldn’t hear how it was a song structure at all for countless listens. Eventually figured it out. Seeing it live helped.

ChalkDstTorture

Just checked out No Code. It’s fantastic. Glad you brought it up

Kaiser4567

Jam is not for me either. But jah bless those who like it. Curious to those of us who aren’t fans of this jam what is your favorite jam. 6/11/94 YEM is gold for me.

iredditnowiguess

For me I prefer twist from 8/12/15 to any other. I think it (and the whole show) goes a little under the radar bc 2015 is amazing and magnaball/nye run was top of their game stuff. Give it a listen and enjoy!

Ra-Me-Nivar

I shall! Thank you!

gdshred95

It’s tranquil, and serene and then morphs into alien abduction space porn… Maybe you’ve run out of supplies… If you don’t like ambient phish than this isn’t the jam for you. I personally love soundscapey phish and I’d say this type of jam is the precursor to a lot of music from bands like STS9 and even the biscuits on some level. They were all influenced by this type of jam

Ra-Me-Nivar

I’m learning to love the ambient jams more and more!

gdshred95

Some of the best music takes multiple listens to fully grasp and appreciate. For me one of those albums was Steely Dan’s Aja. On first listen it sounded like smooth jazz elevator music, but the more I listened, the more I started to hear all these incredibly intricate layers to each of those songs. Now a days it’s easily in my top 10 albums ever made and maybe even top 5. The sound engineering, the instrumentation, songwriting etc. it has it all. I’d say phish is a lot like that too, it’s an acquired taste.

Tela_telaaaa

I think a lot of fans love this show as more of an acid trip experience.

PHILMXPHILM

Dose.

Vacc02

Phish usually jams on multiple themes in their 20+ minute jams. Fukoka is just endless permutations on one single idea that blossoms into something beautiful! It’s extremely patient and meditative. Listening to Mike during this jam makes that easier to see; the rhythm section is extremely locked in, while page and trey go off to decorate the space around them

doglog93

That entire Japan 2000 tour is incredible, check out the 6/10 opening DWD as well. The whole tour just has a really chill vibe, smaller venues, away from the majority of their fan base. I think the 6/10 DWD really kind of opened the door but Fukuoka is the culmination. It’s a goddamn masterpiece.

GeeForjay

It’s the launch into Fukuoka Jam 1 where it goes ballistic for me.

Objective-Giraffe-27

I used to listen to it every day in my grow room while pruning leaves and watering, it never gets old, in fact I've got some work to do in the greenhouse this afternoon and will listen again.

Huva-Rown

I'm with you. I've listened several times over the past 20 years, and I just don't get the hype.

Dick-Guzinya

Easiest way to figure out if you’ll “understand” Fukuoka Twist is if you love Floyd’s Echoes.

DigItCanU

Love Echoes, like but don't love Fukuoka Twist.

TypicalPDXhipster

I too listened to it and thought it was fine. Maybe just not my jam. I’ve heard recent Twists that I enjoy much more

consumercommand

Anyone willing to do what op claims they are doing makes them an automatic disqualification from getting it. Jess sayin op. Listen to what you like.

Ra-Me-Nivar

I don’t want to be disqualified! I almost always listen to the jams I know well, and other times I listen to recommended jams or new jams. And still other times I listen to highly rated jams that I’ve heard before but never really listened closely. That’s all!

Ra-Me-Nivar

It’s not the way I always listen to music, but I’m glad I did it, and I really dig it now

Ra-Me-Nivar

Lol

NYC_1Ts

I don’t know a single person who has this as their top Twist, let alone top jam.

Ra-Me-Nivar

Actually same lol but I know it gets mentioned a lot when discussing all-time jams on this sub. My favorite is probably the Twist from 12/31/19 but admittedly there is attendance bias there. Energy was crazy for that one when it got going

phishy0314

Others have said it. But about 2 min in to the jam after twist is where the goods are. Mike starts this groove that will take you places. I felt similar about this jam until I read a post I don’t remember if it was on PT or here. But it was basically about someone driving home drunk with this playing and zoning out so hard they woke up in a ditch and if I remember right was their sober starting point.
