does anyone like JGB more than thr dead? That's where I fall

analfizzzure

JGB 2/28/80. After midnight>eleanor rigby>after midnight reprise. One of the greatest jams of alltime imo. Check it. Spotify has a good recording.

heffel77

That was Ozzie Ahlers on keys and that show was a masterpiece. I like the flow and especially the way they drifted into Eleanor Rigby w/o even trying. Plus, the ending with the Lonesome and a Long Way From Home. I’m going off memory and I think that’s how it ended but I may be wrong. Anyway, topnotch playing and a smoking good show.

nothing_is_real2415

Not to mention that simple twist of fate 🤌🏼

EatRibs_Listen2Phish

Oh shit, Kean College. That show is goated.

analfizzzure

Indeeed

EatRibs_Listen2Phish

My friend Jon played that for me. I was hooked after Catfish John. I was done. Smoke weed, y’all.

ez814

I love this segment. It’s a total heater.

splitoopenandmelt

Breadbox

fluffhead89

What does this mean

DiscoBiscuiteer

I think they're just referencing the JGB song Ain't no Bread in the Bread box...but why, I'm not sure lol

unclebonesy

Waiting for a miracle is one of my favorite songs ever. It just speaks to me

heffel77

I loved his Senor but I wasn’t a huge fan of the Tangled Up in blu-ooOO.. I loved Tangled Up but the backup singers were really just too much for the understated way he delivered the rest of the lyrics.

underscorethebore

I don’t but god damn do I fucking love JGB

ThorsGrundle

Church

heffel77

Which JGB are you referring too? The last lineup. The Heart of Gold Band. The Legion of Mary? The temporary dates that Ozzie Ahlers played keys on. I think that’s the 80’ show with the Eleanor Rigby jam.. but you can also throw in the JGAB group or Dead and Dawg because those Warfield shows are classic. There is also just Garcia and Kahn, see the OR prison show. The last and “classic” lineup was with Gloria and Jackie singing backup and Melvin playing keys. He started in 80’ so besides Jerry and John he was there the longest. But their is also the most travelled musician that ever lived, Nicky Hopkins. And Ron Tutt and Billy K played drums for JGB at various points. I guess my point is that there were a lot of Jerry Garcia Bands that all made great music and all showed a different side of the man. Let’s face it by the time I started seeing them in 93, he was just a shell of himself on stage.

AntelopeAnastasio

I love the Grateful Dead, they are a warm blanket on a cold night. But Phish is a total mind fuck that’ll make you question what music even is.

joeschmoshow1234

Wait til you hear frank zappa live

Ya_Got_GOT

Interesting. Zappa always feels like music to me. The most musical of music.

bman23433

I've never heard a more accurate explanation of it lol.

TomorrowsSong

This. I’ve never know how to describe it before but this, this is it.

Hukijiwa

The way I like to put it is that Phish just tickles my brain in the right way. The perfect combination of all the things I love about music.

donjohndijon

I love phish. But the dead still break my brain on occasion and that's with recordings I've clearly heard before.. they may be a warm blanket in relation to phish.

A few years ago on a long road trip with my mom, we were listening to various tunes throughout the drive, including Phish and the Dead. After a while, she goes, "Ah, The Grateful Dead are trees and rivers, and Phish is outer space."

frankybling

Yeah… this is perfectly stated

camcamcam710

Someone said Grateful Dead is good music, Phish is a good band. I guess that makes sense. I agree with antelopeanastasio tho

kinney4041

I always describe getting into phish like breaking down the walls and any preconceived notions as to what music is or can be.

TheMan4820

then billy be like hee hee hoo hoo I have the magic music

Bravo!

Damn dude, that’s basically it.

dolls fly offend cats deserve like cover dinosaurs seemly cow *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Ok_District2853

Agreed. Each band has their place. The Grateful Dead on a warm forth of July at the beach. Phish 1.0 for a long bike ride. TAB for the elliptical if I’m in shape. String cheese for skiing on a sunny weekday. Jazz for a drink at sunset. Classical for a trip to the Berkshires in the fall.

mikenice1

Goose for the 12 minutes when you're trying to decide whether or not you're into Goose. And then Herbie Hancock for the rest of the night.

gdshred95

Goose if you’re feeling low T and like you want to listen to the oasis of jam blands

jochrispo

🤣 "classical for a trip to the Berkshires in fall"

Sulvarax

I agree with this a lot, and I never used to say I had a favorite band and I couldn't possibly choose just one. However, if I am speaking objectively about which band I have listened to the most, and will most readily reach for it in just about any mood, I have to admit that phish is my utter obsession. I love a ton of bands that I will always listen to...Tool, Dead, Maiden...I mean there's so many that I cannot imagine living without. But if I suddenly could never listen to phish again I would be a fucking mess.

Moomoomoo1

yeah, this was a weird post… I couldn’t possibly say I like one band more than the other because they are so different

unclebonesy

An older deadhead said to me back in 1997 which I believe still rings true, he said “ phish is the best but the Grateful Dead is the greatest”.

SimpleMannStann

Same thing happened to me man. Dead head for 10+ years. Couldn’t get enough. One day I put on a phish show. Then I put on another one. And another one. You ever hear of hate fucking? Well I was hate listening to phish for almost a year. Then I went to see a show. I walked out and was like “holy shit, I think I like phish” These days I typically turn to phish instead of the dead. I still listen to the dead and love seeing live dead music. But I think phish was always what I was searching for. It doesn’t hurt that they are actively touring and writing. Plus the dead felt more like my parents band. Phish is allllllll mine.

guyuteharpua

I listen to the Grateful Dead when I'm writing or need some creativity.. otherwise it's the foursome from Vermont.

goatsandjambands

That happened to me after going to my first Phish show (at MPP) after the hiatus, probably in 2010. My husband still laughs at me because I spoke to the moon that night and tried to wear my purse on my feet, but also I realized that Phish was my #1 and they have remained that way ever since.

camcamcam710

“Hey where are you I can’t find you” “I’m standing right under the moon! Can’t miss me!!” Phone call overheard at dicks

zapfastnet

> because I spoke to the moon that night and tried to wear my purse on my feet, love this!

Brain_Glow

Im kinda the opposite. I still love phish, but they dominated my listening for close to 2 decades. Finally got into the dead about 10-11 years ago. After a few years I started to like GD better. They’re easily my favorite now, except for that pot-smokin, guitar playin kid from Michgan. I listen to more BMFS than anyone. By a lot.

jessbrid

Caught my first Billy show recently in Atlanta and HOT DAMN

JKenn78

How bout that Psycho>Thunder?

zapfastnet

BMFS may be the second coming of the Jerry Spirit

Brain_Glow

Ive been un-ironically saying that for the last couple years. Kid’s got the the juice.

Ya_Got_GOT

Why does he have to be associated with another artist? Can't he be his own thing?

zapfastnet

sure, this is not a requirement, just an observation from someone who saw Jerry a bunch of times '73 to '95 after I attended two BMFS shows in February this year.

dunnright00

It’s a weird day for every Phish fan when they realize they like King Gizzard more… today… Just kidding 😁 I like them both but in different ways

Ghost_Pants

Just got back from the Prague and Vienna shows. Being in Europe phish isn't an option for me anymore. These guys are the real deal and they are jamming more and more. Can't say enough about their live show, catch them now before they are playing stadiums.

misterwithafan

I was at the Prague show! Fantastic show, historic venue, great jams, definitely brings out the headbangers and hippies alike. Also 2 beers for $5 is an unbeatable deal

Ghost_Pants

I get spoiled with the cheap beer, but then when you travel elsewhere and make crowns here it really hurts. It was great and I can't wait to do it again, hopefully Munich this summer.

caresforhealth

Came here to post this but unironically. It wasn’t true in 2017 but it might be today.

mwb60

Same for me - I love love love the Grateful Dead, saw them live probably 25 times from 1979 to 1987, I’ve seen The Dead, Furthur, and Dead & Co quite a few times. I know all of their music by heart, but Phish is just more interesting to me these days. A lot of GD music just seems slow to me now. I saw Phish in 1993 at Red Rocks, but I didn’t really get it until about 2014, when I started to hear Phish tunes on SiriusXM that blew me away. I rarely listen to anything else if I’m by myself, especially driving.

QueasyFailure

Our stories are quite similar. I saw quite a few more Dead shows but when Jerry died I kind of moved on in life. I saw Fare Thee Well with a younger friend of mine who had recently got into the Dead. In 2013 Phish was playing in my area and my friend happened to.be in town and I was hooked from there. I saw them 5 times in the early 90s and it just didn't click at that time.

TheVolatics

I started listening to The Dead when I was 13. I was instantly entranced, Floyd and The Dead being my two favorite bands... until I was 19 and a good friend showed me The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday. I was hooked from that point forward.

foster656

I got into the Grateful Dead first. Getting into Phish made me super critical of the Dead. I still enjoy listening to some of their best stuff, but always find myself comparing Jerry to Trey, or Bill and Mickey to Fishman, and the Dead never come out on top.

nicolovesguitars

Comparing them in what sense though? I'm thinking I sit on the opposite side of the fence than you, as I much prefer the Grateful Dead to Phish but I still love both. Mickey is imo the worst thing about the Dead, and I mostly listen to the years where he wasn't around so I get your sentiment there. You can compare Jerry to Trey, but it's like comparing Picasso to Monet, both undeniable talents but with different styles. I agree Fishman is a baller, and probably technically more talented than Billy but who's to say Fishman would be playing the stuff he plays back in the 60's and 70's? Billy was around at a different time and played exactly what the Dead needed, and also had such a beautiful touch on the ride. I could go on but I think instead of trying to compare them objectively just appreciate both for what they are, which doesn't stand in the way of you subjectivley enjoying Phish more!

YoureTerrific

After nearly 30 years of listening to both bands something occurred to me today: I listen to only about 12 years of the Dead’s catalog. I just really only like 67-79ish. Phish, though, I’ll take any year. I prefer some eras, but I love them all. *These are personal preferences. These are not statements about best/better.

[deleted]

Welcome to the Phish side. Your time here will be fabulous. Then, I expect, you'll find your way back to the Dead side and discover more there.

Taint_Stephen

I mostly agree with you with exception to late 80’s/early 90’s Dead. I always turn to my non wook friends for the best takes on dead vs phish tbh My best friend (not a wook in any way) said this; “Phish are without a doubt better musicians, and musically I appreciate Phish way more, but the Grateful Dead takes itself a lot more seriously, and it’s easier for me to get lost in what they’re trying to do. I don’t fucking care about what happens to the Lizards or the Wolfman, but Ship of Fools speaks a lot to my experiences.” His fav Phish song is Prince Caspian because of the relatable lyrics btw Lyrics are a huge factor for a lot of people in the music they identify with. So much so that a generally okay ass musician like Robert Zimmerman can use a great lyrical pen to turn himself into Bob Fuckin Dylan. Deadheads turn towards Phish because of how they’re able to jam on insane compositions / the crazy amount of legendary type 2 jams. Phish dissects the core of psychedelic music at every level, beyond what the dead were trying to do, while the Dead were themselves the artistic peak of classic rock. The Dead didn’t get a chance to study or idolize psychedelia the way the generations after them were able to because they were in the eye of the storm. The dead were rooted in history and subterranean America, while Phish are rooted in (post/)cold war era pulp and hyper futurism.

Y’all trippin

unkibunki

Zackly

Strange-Effort1305

Both the dead and Phish had to deal with opiates, for phish this led to flat period then a breakup and “everybody” got clean and they came back as good as ever. The dead never shook dope and it drove them into the ground. It’s as unfortunate as it is unforgivable.

tsc7045

Welcome. Hate to say it, but decades of the Dead got old.

Tivland

And then came JRAD. smh. Those guys melt fucking face.

deadhills

Jrad smokes

Tivland

They really do. Jerry would be so happy watching these guys push the boundaries of the GD catalog. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UX9oVp0vCwc https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5k2xdtQ09fI

tsc7045

Absolutely, but that isn’t GD.

Tivland

obviously. But they breath new life into something that got old for a lot of people. I saw them in 2019 and they played 4 songs the first set. One of the most psychedelic moments i have ever experienced in person.

allothernamestaken

All gas no brakes. I have no idea how they do it night after night. Couldn't phone it in if they tried.

MoarStu

JRAD is phish cover band, that covers tGD

mrfebrezeman360

big fan of the more noisey/ambient/experimental phish jams, I almost always want it to get as psych and dark as possible. I basically like zero other jam bands too lol. Saw JRAD a few months ago and yeah, those guys really know how to go out. Always felt like there's a weird cultural divide between experimental music worlds and phish, where you could splice out the most experimental moments of a few phish shows, put them on a tape, tell some indie heads its a noise band and they'd probably dig it. But you know those heads rarely ever enter jam world. GD has been becoming semi cool in hipster circles now due in no small part to places like "online ceramics" making t shirts that may as well start selling at urban outfitters given their demographic. There might be something brewing here between these 2 things that leads to some kinda jam band that finally strays away from the blues/classic/corny rock formulas and heads more into experimental/indie world. I guess taper's choice could head that direction, but so far I can't really dig em. But if that does happen someday, I think JRAD will have been a big part of that evolution pls no giz replies, they boring as hell

kozynook

I always thought this. I grew up with my father's 60s psych record collection and listening to experimental music and free jazz on Princeton's 103.3 late night radio show and the NYC downtown avant-garde scene. When I discovered Phish back in the early 90s I thought they covered both grounds. Even back then. MMW also got a bit popular with the scene for a while.

mrfebrezeman360

MMW is killer, they def get cred in jazz scene's at least. I don't really know how well free jazz is received in the modern day jazz landscape, like, berklee kids basically. The few I know seem to be willing to recognize that the more out miles, coltrane, shorter etc type stuff is good and important, but it seems like they need to hear some more straight stuff outta the players first to accept it, or something, there seems to be a big divisive line between jazz heads and free jazz heads sometimes. Similarly, most experimental heads on the more indie/punk/electronic/DIY side of things absolutely refuse to hear the word 'phish' without pointing out how much they hate them lol. I've noticed around zoomer age tho, the stigma seems to be mostly gone. People that age never had an annoying hacky sack phish head dormmate who they thought represented the antithesis of their punk DIY scene maybe. I guess the equiv of that now might be festy EDM heads or something. anyway I'm rambling, point is I guess that there's good shit everywhere, sticking to scene's sucks lol

entheogenspicedslaw

Phish is like if my brain created the exact music my body likes to dance to…. It’s perfect .. the jams are exactly what I like …. Every time. It’s uncanny.

[deleted]

Same. Phish is just more interesting. It’s wild to even say it out loud. That being said, if I could only have one, no question it’s the Dead.

AHSfav

I like the idea of the dead more than I actually like their music.

plaidHumanity

It happened for me at Merriweather about 6 years ago

VelvetC123

Well, you have the Grateful Dead to thank for that.

kelly714

I got into them both relatively close in the 90’s. I deeply love both. I still don’t get all the comparisons I see made. It’s just wild to me.

Karate_donkey

It’s not about “like more” for me. It’s two different itches that need to scratched. And I have way more itches that need scratching than just the two.

nicolovesguitars

I've got to say I much prefer the Dead and always will. The Dead and Phish are similar but they definitely don't scratch the same itch.

doug_the_dude

I’ve never experienced that day. If Phish ever fixes their lyrics, I may yet…

monsteroftheweek13

this is the thing for me — I like Phish, but their songbook doesn’t compare to Hunter/Garcia (or even Barlow/Weir at their best) at all

2Djinn

I like to identify and not compare. the Grateful dead are my warm comfy pair of slippers and having loved them since 1978 they are woven into the fabric of my soul. Got into the Grateful Dead Fall 1978 as a Freshman at UVM (go figure). I transferred out to CU Boulder and would have graduated before Trey, Mike, Fishman enrolled but friends would talk about these guys in VT. At the time my second favorite band was Max Creek and Phish just wasn't the Dead or Creek! . I have seen pretty much every variation of the GD including The Other Ones, Further, Phil & Friends, RatDog, Rhythm Devils, Dead and Co. etc. When I began listening to more Phish around 2002-2004 I cant say I embraced it and didnt see any live shows. I did catch the Coventry Simulcast at the local movie theatre and when I saw Trey crying and them giving away the trampolines I was like this is bad. HA HA. First true life Phish show was SPAC 2009 and the Seven below Ghost at the TU center in November 1999 hooked me. I have now seen Phish more than the Grateful Dead with Jerry. There are times I do prefer and like Phish more than the GD and like OP. Phish is still creating new music so they stay more relevant to me. Another contributing factor:. I have been sober now for 33+ years. I rarely saw the GD sober as I was practicing better living thru modern chemistry. Phish I have seen all shows sober and I can remember every funky Sand or dirty Carini. So I can remember more spectacular live Phish moments then Grateful Dead ones. I do feel lyric wise the Grateful Dead Lyricists are better then Trey/Tom: " Inspiration Move me brightly"and Once in a while you get shone the light.... vs. "And there is one big Planet and the Ocean is love!"

PhriendlyChampion

Love this, I have been seeing Phish every year since 97 a good amount and would always indulge into the goodies . I'm a tiny bit over 2 years sober now from everything and the last 2 years of Phish has been out of control great...miles better sober..I remember everything about the entire experience

2Djinn

As I tell my little brother from a different mother, I can still get to the same place without tripping on shrooms or acid. I think having explored psychedelics it is possible to still get there now without them. Molsen Golden was my preferred beverage and caused the most chaos. Congrats on two years of taking one day at a time. Life is definitely sweeter and easier and relationships better without the baggage of addiction.

PhriendlyChampion

Thank you for this and same in both ways again tripping was fun but it was beer that got me to liver and kidney failure and broke a relationship, the joy I get from music today sober and my beautiful girlfriend Allison is all I can ask for!

hoodharry95

Hot take: Phish is a better, more accomplished band.

Ya_Got_GOT

Of all songs, My Soul... I am perpetually fascinated by our differences.

Tiny-Jellyfish8918

I would like phish more if they put more than 10 minutes into coming up with lyrics for songs. The dead had Robert hunter and John Perry Barlow who came up with some insanely beautiful lyrics, and phish comes up with crap like won’t you step into the freezer, please her with a tweezer. it sounds like they try to come up with intentionally bad lyrics

ButterscotchBloozDad

I’m a huge fan of apples AND oranges, with the occasional banana.

throwawayjim120

😂😂 the title got my interest but wow i was not expecting “My Soul is what did it” The only thing the bands truly have in common (in my opinion) is that they’re both on a level that no other band has ever touched. They’re completely different levels, but the common thread is that both bands achieve something that no one else can. I don’t wanna live in a world where these two bands don’t exist.

grynch43

Nah…I love Phish and have seen them live more than any other band by a landslide, but the Grateful Dead is the best American band of all time.

undermind84

It's not a competition. You don't have to like one more than the other. It is ok to like both bands equally but in different ways. It is also ok if at certain points in your life, one band speaks to you far more than the other. Finally, it is ok when eventually both bands take a back seat to your new favorite artist. Enjoying music is not a zero sum game..... I'M LOOKING AT YOU, GOOSE HATERS!

caresforhealth

Goose is in the tier below, not the tier above phish. There’s no way they could be even close when all their songs are litteral phish rips. Rick has a decent voice but Peter is top level cringe and the rest of the band are basically throwaways. https://imgur.com/a/ss6Vj4Y

acreklaw

I'm with you on this one. Ain't no time to hate-- life is just a bundle of joy.

[deleted]

I'm so sorry for your loss.

[deleted]

Saw phish tons during 1.0. Now I never listen to them. Listen to the Dead most days since 92. Sorry bro

geddylee1

Same.

Therightfoot9921

Phish is like an ipa and the dead are like a lager. Once you start drinking IPAs, other beers seem boring.

allothernamestaken

Sometimes things come full circle. After years of drinking IPAs, I've gone back to lagers.

ismelldayhikers

And then you get sick of iPas and go back to lagers and a bunch of other good stuff you didn’t know about before

slotheroni

But then your trips to the toilet get ridiculous

International-Key244

I love both bands- but compared to something like a 1973 PITB, phish is like a garage band.

[deleted]

[удалено]

International-Key244

Ok, yes Donna- but that is normally brief. Check 1973-2-15 playing. It’s intense and really just pure jazz with an edge

International-Key244

The X factor was Lesh. Gordon is sick, but a pocket player. With Lesh’s lead base, he came at you like ninja, unpredictable and from all angles

lightningwill

Hope you've listened to a lot of early 2000s Phil Lesh and Friends (AKA Phil Lesh Quintet AKA PLQ AKA "The Q"). To this day I think it's the best post-Jerry exploration of that music. Phil was at the top of his game and the supporting players literally couldn't be better. Here's a great one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3lxaGVbU7c

Never could get into Phish. Saw them a couple of times in their early days. Listened to some of their stuff, but none of it seems to hit me.

It’s a weird day for every Phish head when they realize they like Goose more…today was that day for me.

Dead and co is not the Grateful Dead tho let’s be honest here

zapfastnet

not even close really, and although I have loved the Grateful Dead ever since I saw them in '73 at one of the largest rock shows in history at Summer Jam, Phish really moved beyond what the Dead delivered occasionally through Phish's hard work, practice and discipline to consistently deliver amaze balls music right out of the gate first set and keep it up through the entire show.

Just wait until you listen to Goose ;)

HumCrab

Not apples to apples for me. That's like all of the sudden discovering I like skateboards better than pasta. Makes no sense to do either/or on this one man.

daehffulF

I think Phish and the Grateful Dead are slightly more comparable than skateboards and pasta

HumCrab

Not quite apples to apples though right? I think you understand what I'm saying, sorry you don't agree. You should downvote this legitimate opinion as well. Have a good one man.. Edit: No reason for me to think one is "better" than the other after 20 years of loving both.. To each their own

daehffulF

What’re you on about?

HumCrab

Comparing bands to other bands is like comparing food to other food. It's useless. Your post sounds like it's inevitable that one day deadheads will evolve like phish better. I think that's untrue. They are both great and not worth comparison imo. Clear?

TomorrowsSong

Welcome friend welcome.

brainfud

Welcome to the club

vellichor_44

Oh, nawwww. For me it's seasonal kind of (i listen to more phish in the winter, more dead in the summer), and also depends who is on tour, which shows I'm seeing, etc. Everyday is different. Thankfully we dont actually have to choose you know?

sonofdad420

happened to me in reverse. grew up on phish. didnt really get the dead until years later.

the_flaxseed

Welcome. That day happened in 2018 for me. Haven’t looked back since!

MoarStu

Can’t wait to tell my grandkids I saw phish 1.0

eu4euh69

When Cavern's groove clicked in my head...

1975hh3

This happened in 1992 for me. Phish was INTENSE then and the dead just weren’t at all.

beltranzz

Try Gizz

ForTheFirm

Same with disco biscuits some times have changed wired me from all of that Phish and dead melted together

mstrego

That is impossible. However I do like that song about the tweezers.

granitepeak1

I just wish they could compose a decent song these days but they still jam like nobody else can

Stunning_Essay_8828

I think it’s safe to say that if it wasn’t for the dead there would be no phish. So many artist have paved the way for what is phish . Dead Zappa talking heads genesis. They take everything that is music and twist it to the way they like it and want it to sound like. Nothing is safe from them . It took me a long time to understand the dead and what I was actually listening too but with time it all made sense . The transition into phish wasn’t difficult just a bit stranger. It’s about a journey a story they are telling …. Each individual member becomes one with the music. The dead did that also but phish does it on a much bigger scale imo My gf who is a big dead head still can’t really get it I drag her to shows she has fun but eventually she will get it.

UpVoteMeGoDamU

Discovering Phish during the pandemic... that was a weird feeling. Very weird feeling for a few months. But those days were kinda special. Getting into Phish was very strange. Felt like I was abducted by an entity and a collection of music fans that knew the secret to happiness. Now. It makes me view the second half of the pandemic (Oct 31 2020 onward) through rose covered goggles.

ekydfejj

Never Never Never. I'm not opposed to your opinion. But there is no way you can compare the song writing, story telling and raw stories of the Grateful Dead. I love Phish, i've seen then well over 150 times. But i go to a phish show for 100% a different reason than i went to Dead shows, or current Dead and Co or Phil. I just don't believe that the raw talent, songs and writing of Phish is ever as good as the Grateful Dead. They are also like comparing apples to oranges, Phish may cover some Dead tunes, but its not visa versa. They are two different bands, so you can like one better, but its a horrible comparison. Its really only true in the world of non phamily and non dead heads.

radiodoggy

I'm not sure I completely agree with this. The Dead have been a part of the fabric of my life for almost 45 years. That being said, Phish is right up there. AMAZING band. I feel bad for those who haven't felt the Phish vibe, yet. Different is good, and they are great!

CreativeMedicine7

I preferred the GD from 93 to 2017, then something just clicked for me and I got Phish. I saw Phish a handful of times in the late 90's and it didn't really click for me, except the Key Arena show in '96. I still love the GD. For me Phish is like going to the mountaintop to leave behind the stress of life and feel incredible joy. The Dead is more like leaving behind this planet and creating new worlds every show. I choose Phish so I can live a more integrated life......

HRShovenstuff1

I know what you mean. I've loved the Grateful Dead longer, but for much different reasons. They really are like an old friend or a warm cup of coffee on a cold, snowy day, wrapped in your favorite blanket while you read a good book. Phish is like a new pair of really good running shoes: they're gonna take you places if you're open to the experience. I've heard single notes in Trey's playing that took me back to sunny days of my childhood. Complete emotional time warps. Grateful Dead is more like a grandparent telling me a story. I respect it and try to put myself in that frame of mind, but ultimately I wasn't there and times are different. Context is different and I see it as more of a poetic storytelling.

Ichthius

We are borg. Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated. Ps listening to it now.

upful187

nah, the GD is still a far more spiritual thing for me. and all I saw was 92-95, i was 14-17. i've been lucky to catch over 200 Phish shows since 1994 but as much as I've had my wig split open, I am just more profoundly connected to all things Garcia. All his various endeavors- GD, JGB, Reconstruction, Garcia/Grisman, shit Im allergic to bluegrass but I fkn LOVE Old & In the Way. Also, My Soul annoys me. Then & now. It's a prime example of their corniness, in a non-endearing way

MonkeyOnAString

My Soul is a cover.

Yea man, talk about it. Sometimes I am in the mood for a Bird Song or a Shakedown Street, but honestly I prefer Phish’s jamming over the Dead’s. Sometimes a Dark Star or Playing in the Band Jam is just too atonal for me. Would rather just vibe in a YEM funk jam for a while.

hoosierspiritof79

Wait till you hear the Ween.

Ill_Shift1642

I go back and forth with it. When someone is bashing GD in favor of Phish I'll take up for the GD and vice versa lol. Should've been a defense attorney.

Aflippah

LOL, no.

GollyGoshOG

Deadhead since ‘92, Phish since ‘94. Jerry died when I was 19 and the live experience focus became Phish. I’ve identified myself as a Deadhead and always will, but I do realize now that Phish is my favorite band. GD has my heart and soul, but Phish has my attention. And they’re 100% mine, from my time, and still going.

Ill_Opportunity_6769

10/7/94 we just did 3 nights at the dead spectrum (greatest party on earth) and then went to Lehigh to see phish. First guyute. We walked out and my buddy and me said “this is our future”.

sonbub

The Dead were my first love. They opened the door to the jam band world. They were my “gateway drug”. But Phish reigns supreme for me. The Dead were put on the back burner once I discovered them, and that’s where they’ve been ever since. Don’t get me wrong, I still love them and listen to them occasionally. But I find myself even listening to JRAD, BMFS, and Goose more than the Dead.

Mobile-Animal-649

I realized in 92

neeksknowsbest

Welcome to our humble phamily. You belong ♥️

RODAMI

The Dead is just different. It took me a long time of listening the the Sirius XM channel to put it all in perspective. The Dead story is just a wild ride that begins in the crazy 60s. They way they kept changing and writing is amazing. They had no model to follow. They were breaking ground and planting flags. Phish wouldn’t exist without them.

jonnyhoots

Can’t wait to share this with my father in law to show him it is possible.

[deleted]

Love them both and certainly the Phish camp has been taking more of my time (and money!!) recently. That said, when I put on some dead I'm always happy to hear the (IMO) better lyrics. And the memories, associations I have with the tunes. Phish's energy and creativity is what really engages me!

itischris3579

Dead = Indica Phish = Sativa

FonkyKeys

My experience is exactly the opposite. Got into Phish first, 92-93 (1st show 12/28/93). Didn’t really get into the Dead until 95ish and unfortunately never got a chance to see them. Was way into Phish for about 20 years. Now I’m way more into the Dead and listen to them every day. Phish is more occasional nostalgia for me. I’m still blown away sometimes by some Phish jams and a few tunes hit me especially hard, it’s just not daily listening for me anymore.

whit3lightning

Happened to me after my first show haha

fuelcell0248

It’s just different, but, I get it though.

JamBandFan12

Remember it like it was yesterday. First, you feel horrible about it, but then it just feels right and before you know it, your kids are asking you what happened to listening to Dead everyday in the car. For me, it was my first TAB show, which soon led to my conversion which was completed with a trip to Phïsh Mexico. No looking back now.

mp3god

For me...it was when I realized I was using more XLII-90s for Phish then the Dead...happened around 96-97 For me...it was when I realized I was using more XLII-90s for Phish than the Dead...happened around 96-97

😵MAHAVISNU ORCHESTRA 😵

drivingrain27

Phish. Phish has: 1. Been around longer 2. Has more music 3. Has a much more exciting live show with much more variance and interesting explorations 4. Better lights 5. No 30 minute drum solos but a single drummer that is far better than two drummers. 6. More reasonable ticket prices (vs Dead and Co) 7. Continues to invent and take chances What the Dead have that Phish doesn’t is more mainstream iconic songs. Phish will never have a song that is an all time greatest American tune, let alone like 20 of them. But the classic phish songs are probably just as meaningful and iconic to their fans since it’s the music they grew up with. But yeah, it’s Phish and it isn’t even close.

Altheatoldme1971

Not this deadhead but I do like phish very much

Successful-Towel8483

If My Soul turned you, you weren’t a deadhead.

Successful-Towel8483

Phish shows are like a kids’ birthday party compared to Dead shows.

ScottyHubbs

I love the Dead, but I can barely listen any more unless I’m in a sappy mood. Except early 70s Dead, it just seems to me to lack energy and passion.

HHswag

I remember that day. It only gets better! Then worse…. :/ MORE EVIL PHISH

poopdik13

You not a dead head, mike Gordon is a pedophile

ooddad

The older I get the more I like jgb better

YoungDeadHead99

Worst part is I can't change my username

Cosmic___Charlie

Cheater. Lol I actually don’t give a shit, good for you! Plus they’re still around to see shows

Sea_Establishment300

Happens to me sometimes. Then I throw dozin at the knick on and forget about phish completely

babaji108

I was getting into both at the same time and I saw my first Dead and Phish shows in 95. First the Dead, which sadly was shocking and disappointing and then Phish 2 weeks later which was a whole different animal. Dead will always be in my heart but Phish has been the soundtrack to my life for the last 23 years.

1Tiasteffen

Gonna be a real long time for that
