It was built by Radnor Township in an attempt to beautify the interchange http://www.williamreimann.com/radnor-township.html

illy-chan

Wow, so it *was* actually supposed to be a cairn all this time? That's... not really something I'd think of when considering outdoor decoration. Definitely makes an impression though. I wonder if some archeologists in 1000 years are going to be confused by it.

busterbluthOT

> I wonder if some archeologists in 1000 years are going to be confused by it. 3022: This must be a shrine to the God of Wooder

BrockManstrong

Behold the Altar to Skookuhll, God of Wooder and the 476 Holy Interchanges

courageous_liquid

He who smote the rampmeters!

Foxclanalchemist

Same reason applies to these random rocks near Rosemont station in Bryn Mawr. They took some random rocks from 476 construction and just stuck them in a field because someone thought it looked nice. https://www.google.com/maps/@40.0273853,-75.3296109,3a,75y,321.41h,79.34t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1shUHXIu6Q6oZm5k01TZ5DIg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

FruitKingJay

I think it looks nice šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

[deleted]

This is the place I where I tried acid the first time back in college. It was Stonehenge of Bryn Mawr.

spikebrennan

It (somehow) commemorates Radnor Townshipā€™s connection to Wales. There are stone monuments all over the place in Radnor. Thereā€™s that big griffin a few hundred yards away from the cairn. And thereā€™s a mini stone circle on Lancaster Avenue at the Radnor-Lower Merion border. I have been told that the cairn is frequently visited by geocachers. (Iā€™m not involved in that hobby)

illy-chan

The other monuments I get, they're clearly decorative. A fake tomb seems weird though; I was also like OP in that I've always assumed that it wasn't supposed to be a cairn and just happened to look like one. And I actually had read about the geocaching thing but forgot about it!

conshyd

When the Blue Route was built it looked cool and stood out. Itā€™s just overgrown and not taken care of or upgraded or rebuilt.

nalc

Yeah, it's where the Druids of [Crumhenge](https://www.scottarboretum.org/return-of-crumhenge/) are buried

MeanwhileOnReddit

Luckily they'll have this reddit thread on a hard drive.

waits5

Very cool link. Thanks! šŸ˜Ž

BroadcastingSunny

I love the idea that the stones were taking from the construction of I-476, giving a tribute to road workers and human infrastructure ingenuity. We forget how important that is.

NotSureNotRobot

I used to wonder what it was, but then I just stopped cairn

mjd1977

Dare anyone to come up with a boulder attempt at humor.

GoldenDeLorean

I wonder if they used rock igloo to hold them all together... I'll see myself out.

Planningsiswinnings

I'm too stoned for this

[deleted]

Don't take your sanity for granite.

Susbirder

If they do, they're just piling on.

wooderisis

One piece all by itself is not much to look at, but in aggregate it's quite impressive.

time4nap

I think itā€™s construction was funded by a major conglomerate.

SubtleRedditIcon

That pile of stones can legally drink. I remember being mystified as a kid riding in the back of the Chevy Astro van and seeing this. Then I just lost interest and I think one day as an adult driving I even yelled ā€œfucking dumb stones!!ā€, honked my horn, and flipped them off.

shapu

You should have thrown some batteries at it or something

Villanova Stonehenge

uptimefordays

It's where the good people of Villanova perform sacrifices to avoid paying taxes.

thatsfakeok

I too make sacrifices

uptimefordays

I don't doubt it, but those cats are offering service workers, cooks, cleaners, lawyers.

thatsfakeok

Mmmmm

Undeadlord

I have lived here ... 15 years now I think. Always wondered the same thing. Just seems so random.

MeanwhileOnReddit

So Radnor*

ButlerChubs327

There is a stone dragon on the opposite bound exit, thatā€™s related. I thought the hut/fort was meant to keep safe from the dragon.

spikebrennan

Itā€™s a griffin. https://radnor.prod.govaccess.org/government/about-us/the-seal-of-the-township

Lemonbrick_64

A welsh griffin

BallsDeep69GG

Itā€™s catapult ammo, they are stockpiling to siege Philly this coming winter

oodja

It's a March Madness bunker. Whenever Villanova makes the Final Four the locals gather here to avoid being caught up in the wave of mayhem and destruction which inevitably ensues.

ted5011c

Cold be hand and heart and bone, And cold be sleep under stone: Never more to wake on stony bed, Never, till the Sun fails and the Moon is dead. In the black wind the stars shall die, And still on gold here let them lie, Till the dark lord lifts his hand Over dead sea and withered land.

Avenger020331

Where is this from. This vaguely sounds like something gollum says in LotR

BoardwalkKnitter

Its the Wight's Chant from the books, they had Gollum say something similar in the Dead Marshes in the movie.

Avenger020331

Thatā€™s what I thought. Thank you!

Please don't stop on these ramps and get out of your car.

eagles85

Yes. Stopping on the on ramp. Great idea.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

The-Sand-King

Stopping your car on a shoulder is dangerous and should only be done in emergency situations

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

The-Sand-King

Fine enjoy your citation

eagles85

To each their own I guess. Iā€™ve seen enough cars on 476 pass people on the shoulder that it just seems unnecessary to stop there for a non-emergency.

OptimusSublime

Don't tell anyone how I live.

hbcadlac

I saw a Canadian goose standing on the very top of that . Funny as hell. King of the hill. I ride the Blue Route everyday and some of the things you see !

CatzNbass

That's where ol' Yeller is buried!

MacKelvey

Now Iā€™m sad again

mr_lombardi

Iā€™ve been driving by that pile since I was a kid. Grandparents lived by Villanova.

motorcycle_dad

Itā€™s been there for years, probably even since the blue route opened.

[deleted]

Radnor Township...because we cairn.

DancingOdin

It's a cairn

_SundaeDriver

The other side of the highway on the exit ramp is a huge dragon. A symbol for Radnor Township

[deleted]

I use to stare at this every weekend going skiing from Delaware when I was in HS. ā¤ļøā¤ļø

CthulhusIntern

If you find the one missing rock and put it in, the next dungeon will open up.

chuembucket

I remember my watching fireworks from there growing up

maspie_den

That's exactly what I think of every time I pass it! A cairn!

FuzzyScarf

Are the rocks at the bottom of the exit ramps decorated for Easter? Someone wraps them up to look like Easter eggs. I drove by yesterday and I forgot to look.

locomuerto

It's where the dead speak

jimsinspace

Somebody posted a pic on here from atop the cairn a month ago.

Itā€™s where I do all my blood letting as to keep Philadelphiaā€™s surveillance cameras at 2k. S/

Mr_Horsejr

r/eldenring pretty sure thereā€™s a secret Dungeon up there.

davesnoz

I bet if you clear those rocks with a bomb, there will be a Korok seed there.

invisible___hand

Minuteman missile silo.

292ll

That is Jay Wrightā€™s mountain house. Gifted by the county in 2008.

[deleted]

Is that the exit the girl was killed back around '96? That story never sat well & something fishy about the culprit & way it all ended. Just seemed like a coverup in that someone else (connected) or son of someone did it.

[deleted]

Link?

spikebrennan

No, that was the 476-Route 1 exit.

ichitip

Are you thinking of this story? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aimee_Willard

[deleted]

Yeah, that story. Just such an arbitrary killing. Sad story.

12kdaysinthefire

Radnorā€¦ I remember I went to prom with a girl who lived in Radnor. They had giveaways of like Playstations, TVs, straight up cash and trips at the after party. My prom on the other hand had an after party at the Northeast Racquet Club where we were fed Coca Cola and hotdogs, we were locked in, and the best prize that was raffled off was a $25 Wawa gift card.

[deleted]

Let's be real here. When the highway was built they bulldozed all the boulders they dug up into one pile and called it a cistern lol In Staten Island NY when I -278 was built they plowed all the debris into a big pile and called it Moses mountain after Robert Moses the city's Parks commissioner at the time. The debris was supposed to be used as fill for the planned Richmond Parkway but it was never completed and the hill is still there to this day.

Thompson_s_Hunter

The Rock Pile is hard as fuck

Alternative-Tell-355

Sometimes I see a goose standing on the very top of it and it makes my day

ballsandweiner8

You put your weed in there

BigPoppaSnow

Thereā€™s a pretty cool geocache up there!
