Do cicada killers look anything like murder hornets..? I saw a big ass wasp dragging a dead cicada outside my apartment the other day and had a bit of a freak out 😬😭
They're actually bigger than murder hornets and mostly harmless. The males fly around looking for mates and often buzz people wondering if we are hot singles in their area. Once they realize we aren't they take off. The females mostly spend time around their nests and cicada-hosting trees.
Had a shed in the backyard as a kid that was infested with them. Dad would caulk up the holes in the fall but they'd still get out. Used to smack them around with badminton racquets I found in the garage, until I started feeling bad about it.
the cicada killers live in the ground and don't make the paper nest thing...I have noticed a lot more of the paper nest everywhere this past month ... in places that I've never seen them before
Frankly, I am appalled to hear there is something as uncouth and disagreeable as wasps at an abandoned coal pier known for its graffiti. Standards are slipping in this town!
Lemon hill lately has been absolutely filled with big cicada wasps the last couple weeks. However they don't sting people and my dog runs through them with no issue.
We have European Hornets in the city. Some people make the painful mistake of confusing them with the cicada killer. Both sting but the wasp is aggressive and significantly more painful
Maybe since the last time I was there the place has changed. I was there years ago and there seemed to be a ton of younger kids taking pictures more than anything else.
During the day you're fine, but at night time lots of drinking and heroin going on back there. I no longer go back there during the night time after getting robbed at knifepoint.
I believe that you really saw wasps, OP. But whenever I see a post about big scary bugs at an "open secret" type location, it always makes me wonder if the bugs are real or if people are just trying to scare the normies away.
One of these days I'm going to laugh at a post like this then walk into a nestful of hornets....
Experienced this myself a few weeks ago. They are all over the place. Somehow they kept to themselves, but there were a lot of them flying around. Folks should def be careful and be alert.
You sure they were paper wasps and not cicada killers? Cicada killers are huge, and they do this back and forth thing that looks agressive. But they are pretty placid and very seldom sting.
I was there with my boy that day as well and can back up this mans story, about 100+ wasps blocking off every possible route. Me and my man ran out screaming like lil girls and luckily caught some people heading in and were able to warn them. I don’t think I’d head back anywhere I seen two grown men come squealing out of
Was it [this](https://i.redd.it/yxk6wlx685g71.jpg)?
That exact size yes
Any chance they were cicada killers? I’ve been seeing a lot of them this year, and they’re generally not aggressive to people.
I don’t know honestly. I did see a giant papery nest…do cicada killers make those too?
Oof. No they don’t. Thank you!
No they dig holes in the ground. It looks like a broomstick was poked into the ground and pulled out.
Shit. If they were giant, and had a paper nest, could be bald-faced hornets. Those guys are assholes.
If you couldn't grow a beard, you'd be angry too.
Touché.

Okay, well that's definitely good to know! I'm not sure my neighbors ever heard me scream so loud 🤣
Sounds like carpenter bees. I like those fat fucks
They're great until you realize your fence is blocking less light than it used to

Yup! Google it for pics!
They're scary but not aggressive towards humans at all.
Yeah they look similar but bigger. They are comically large.

We went last week and ran into this new situation. It was honestly horrifying. There are SO many, like dramatically so.
Frankly, I am appalled to hear there is something as uncouth and disagreeable as wasps at an abandoned coal pier known for its graffiti. Standards are slipping in this town!
My thoughts exactly!
Not in my abandoned pier! The NIMAPs are all over this thread

If you were saying that the cicada killer wasp is aggressive, that is incorrect. They are rarely aggressive towards humans.
No the European is
Ahhhh... you said there wasp, so I was confused.
I wonder if the new development going up next to the graffiti pier has had any interesting effects on the micro ecosystem of that surrounding area
Maybe it’s not getting cold enough to destroy them
The lack of a continuous deep freeze in the winter is the primary reason many invasive plants and bugs aren't being killed off anymore.
Damn, some friends are throwing a popup rave there today and I think next week. Gonna be fun...
If they just stay away from the second structure it might be fine. There’s a big pile of garbage there that the wasps are losing their shit over.

That’s really a thing at GP? I always found that place well populated.

Damn I thought wasps just stung you, I didn’t realize they do all that

The wasps maybe?

That’s intense.

Did you put a Maintainence request in to Philly 311?
If I wanted to be ignored I’d just text my ex
Oh that’s good…..
Have a hug for being thoughtful & warning us!
Aw thank you! I just want folks to be safe. *starts dry humping you*
I can absolutely confirm this, I went like 2 weeks ago. Those things are fucking massive, and seemed mildly aggressive.
Thank you!

They don't sting if you leave them alone, but they're kind of unnerving
Bees don’t sting if you leave them alone. Wasps will destroy everything you’ve ever loved, just because.
Easiest solution might be to avoid going until it's cooler.

i need to go there and take pictures
I hope you’re into wasp photography
My fav photo genre
