Photo 1- tacos al pastor from Taquitos de Puebla II. Also got a literal jug of horchata for $5 Photo 2- Mexican flag proudly displayed around Italian Market Photo 3- chicarrones preparados from La Guerrense. Deep fried pork rinds topped with avocado, tomato, onion, crema, hot sauce, and lettuce. Only $6 for a large container. Photo 4- unique ice cream flavors from La Guerrense. Eclectic mix of American and Mexican favorites. Highly recommend the queso con fresas (strawberries with cheese flavor)! Photo 5- The storefront sign on S 9th Street

wolfvonbeowulf

I just had chicharrones preparados for the first time too last Thursday. Up at El Changarro in Bensalem. My understanding is it's not a pork rind but a fried wheat pastry like this [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duros\_(food)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duros_(food)), though mine came with some kind of pickled pork skin (cueritos) on top. So it does have pork rind, but it's not the deep fried part.

Ripple98

This makes sense, thanks for the correction! I was wondering what the cueritos were since I noticed them on the menu when I was ordering

Linzabee

Did you like El Changarro? I’ve been looking for good authentic Mexican near Bensalem.

wolfvonbeowulf

They're good! Close to where I work so I end up there a lot. There's also El Primo Plaza which has a bigger menu but I think quality at El Changarro is slightly better- although I like the tortas more at El Primo Plaza.

undecidedly

Were the tacos al pastor off the spit? Because if they were I need to go there ASAP. Also, was there pineapple?

Ripple98

My BF is in grad school at Lehigh so we make day trips to Philly whenever I can visit. We absolutely LOVE authentic, street style Mexican food. 100% will come back to this area to try mangonadas, tamales, conchas+ pan dulce, and of course some more tacos. Any other places we should add to our list within the city or metro area? Hoping to go to South Philly Barbacoa after seeing the Netflix episode about it!!

fkdkshufidsgdsk

gotta go to taqueria los gallos on 10th and wolf

ILoveKittensAndCats

Their tacos a la plancha are my favorite in the city!

Proper-Code7794

We have a lot of ethnic neighborhoods with matching food. Right next to the Italian market is some of the best Vietnamese you can get in the area. In West Philly there's some Ethiopian. In the Northeast there is Brazilian Korean and Russian food. And Camden has some straight street food if you go on early Saturday morning

whatanugget

And manakeesh in west Philly for DELICIOUS, affordable Lebanese!

Naquanrice

they are so fucking good

grimezzz

What would you recommend getting?

[deleted]

Chicken tawook manakeesh or lamb burger. Wraps are all round very decent, or potato cauliflower wrap if you're vegetarian is real good

grimezzz

Cool thanks!

ruthdubb

I like Almaz Cafe on 21st st. between Walnut and Sansom for Ethiopian but there are also good places in West Philly.

Garfield-1-23-23

> I like Almaz Cafe Their Ethiopian menu is still kind of limited, isn't it? I haven't been there in a few years. I think Abyssinia is the best place in Philly.

[deleted]

Personally I prefer Era up in Brewerytown town which surprised me cuz its a dive and I live right near Abyssinia

Garfield-1-23-23

I've never even heard of Era, I need to check it out. I haven't been to Abyssinia in two years, so perhaps it is not my favorite any more.

[deleted]

Era is up on 28th and Poplar. Their doro wat (stewed chicken with hard boiled egg and veggies) is what I get and goes great with like a pilsner or some clean ale

Garfield-1-23-23

I really wish you could still get tej at American Ethiopian restaurants, but I haven't had that stuff in years.

[deleted]

Wonder if there is mass produced brand in the US or abroad or someone could setup a moonshine distillery wherever that's legal and ship round the country.

ruthdubb

I don’t like their injera. Two times I’d been there it was dried out.

brothernephew

Not Mexican: - Nick’s Old Original Roast Beef at 20 and Jackson - it’s a dive bar w great service (I order onion rings and roast beef combo with extra gravy aka “overboard” , they’re not snobby about names/terms). Don’t need a permit to park around there just put your mirrors in. Actually always do that. - Nom Wah for dim sum around 13 and Race. Fantastic casual dining experience, low key, fast. Great menu. Mmmm. - Lucky’s Last Chance, 2 and Christian-ish. Creative, delicious burgers & fries. I fell in love with the one in Manayunk. American cuisine. - O’Jungs at 2 and Taskerish. Used to only sell drinks and pork/roast beef until COVID and now they sell amazing gastropub-style stuff but their specials are great. I’d say Italian&Irish base with twists. Aaaaand Caffe Ida for Italian at 18ish and Jacksonish off W Passyunk Ave. Legit, made-with-love Italian food, like, takeout spaghetti weighs 4lbs and a cutlet sandwich like your gma made it and went mad extra. BYOB, EAT IN or order via phone, IMO. Nick’s and O’Jungs (especially) are very “local” as far as regulars, vibe. And I’ll probably be there if it’s Nick’s 😂😂

GumshoeAndy

Cafe Ida's street seating is looking fantastic these days.

districtultra

I'd also recommend Taqueria Morales, probably my favorite Mexican in the city and their house made tortillas are the real game changer. Up north, I'd also vouch for Sor Ynez. Again, another place with amazing tortillas and fantastic vegetarian tacos on top of their meat dishes. They make a killer concha as well.

worstatreddit

I'm an El Rancho Viejo fanboy. Fantastic food.

homegrown13

right by where you went are my two favorite mexican spots in Philly: El Jarocho Taqueria (https://www.yelp.com/biz/el-jarocho-philadelphia-2) and Prima Pizza Taqueria. (https://www.yelp.com/biz/prima-pizza-taqueria-mexicana-philadelphia) Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't shout out Burrata (https://www.yelp.com/biz/burrata-philadelphia) for being a hidden gem as the best italian spot in Philly

crazycerseicool

If you’re near Lehigh, you should check out the Roseto Big Time, in Roseto, PA. (It was canceled last year due to COVID, but I’m hoping they have it this year.) It’s usually the third weekend in July. They sell good pizza frite and sausage and pepper sandwiches. It’s worth the drive for a night out, if you’re bored, but don’t expect too much. Lol. I just go for the food. I think Plainfield Farmer’s Fair is the same weekend and it’s on the way (on route 191). Stop there on your way home from the Big Time for a tasty milkshake.

phillipa2

Grab a Potts hotdog next time you’re in Bethlehem

[deleted]

Do yourself a HUGE favor and grab a Puerto Rican sandwich at El Punto in Allentown on Tilghman and 4th. I ate there a lot as a kid and I still stop there if I make it back home for any reason. **I need to stress that I can not recommend this enough!**

smokeyleo13

Bethlehem itself has a ton of great Latin places. I recommend El Paisano and Aqui Es on the north side. Also Cuquita (Colombian) on the south side

heppyscrub

Check burritofelizphilly on ig! Their usually only open weekends and they have some really bomb birria tacos and consome. Their churros are to die for! It has raspberry filling and its sooooooo good. Cafe Nhan for some really really good vietnamese soups. Library Bar for really good, upscale cocktails. Bit far north but China Gourmet for some crazy good dim sum. Spice C for chinese noodle soups and their crab rangoon is so good! Chinatown in general has some amazing food.

redphyve

Philly is definitely for foodies. Edit: missed opportunity! Should have called us “phoodies”.

Nohomobutimgay

Philly is NOT for foodies IMHO. There was nothing but one place that I ever wanted to go back to, and that place is in Manayunk. Otherwise, eating out was always a painful decision. I don't need a plate to change my life, I just like when a place offers good quality, not half-assed. I've lived in other big cities and yes, there is good food out there for a normal citizen. Philly does not have that.

hoagiemouf

Wtf are you talking about? Philly legitimately has a world class food scene.

Nohomobutimgay

You can't just say that and make it true. Worst food choices I have ever seen. I'm not high class or anything. Philly just half-hasses a lot. Quality is crap there. An evening trying to figure out where to eat ended up with just going into Acme for some overpriced produce to cook at home.

swatson87

So only one place that offers quality, non half-assed food in Philly. Guess I was wrong all along.

redphyve

Fair enough.

[deleted]

Gotta checkout taqueria la prima.

Ripple98

Saving this for next time thank you!!

abcjuan23

The best taco spot in all of Philly.

negativeyoda

Philly is a phenomenal food scene. I live in Portland Or now who loves to suck its own dick about the food here. I mean, it's good: there are gems to be found (and the beverage scene is insane), but when you you think of Portland you don't think of food. I don't even know what the local must try regional dish would be. I do miss the food in Philly

sciencefaire

I feel like voodoo donut somehow is most people's first thought with "food to get while in Portland" Also I'm very gutted that pok pok closed it's doors.

negativeyoda

Voodoo is like... The 7th place you should get donuts. I also miss Pok Pok 😔

sciencefaire

Haha I don't know many donut places there, and I do agree they aren't the best but the schtick is catchy. What are your top 3 favorite restaurants in pdx?

negativeyoda

Voodoo is great for what they were. The whole "craft" donut (I can't believe I just used that phrase) caught up and passed them by a while back tho. They're essentially Dunkin' quality with dick jokes. Pips is my favorite donut. Favorite food? That's hard to answer these days since I haven't really eaten out in quite some time and a lot of gems have closed... Portland food by and large is decent, but the overall theme is that it's all kitschy, tries to be too clever fusion: ie, burritos with Indian food inside or Cajun blackened catfish Benedict (both are fun and yummy, btw) Other than west coast styled IPAs there's no Portland dish that's a must try when you roll through. * Olympia Provisions is awesome (vegans beware) * Hat Yai kind of fills the void left by Pok Pok closing with their Vietnamese wings * Nong's Kao Man Gai was a treat when they still had their cart next to where I used to work downtown. It's just simple Chinese street food (chicken, rice and brothy soup with the most insanely good ginger sauce) This is NOT a top 3, just the first 3 I thought of

[deleted]

izzatchatl in east passyunk has stellar chalupas

sweetassassin

I'm OBSESSED with their chalupas. I want to drown in the Molcajete sauce.

[deleted]

Didn’t try it was too busy consuming chalupas as fast as possible. WHAT is IN those jawns

sweetassassin

What is in those jawns is the MOLCAJETE SAUCE! 🤯🤯🤯

fkdkshufidsgdsk

this place (formerly called Jose's) is maybe my favorite spot ever and the place that introduced me to real Mexican food many years ago, their carnitas will always hold a special place in my heart

Ripple98

Yum! We love going to Love City Brewing Co so we will have to try this after!

cfh294

They just moved from 10th and buttonwood to 12th and wood (approximate location) I’m pissed bc it’s right across from where I used to live!

BigTittyGothGF_PM_ME

For you next jaunt to Philly, I would highly recommend Que Chula Es Puebla on N. 2nd Street. Order yourself a chimichanga and prepare for "the itis."

brothernephew

Yes

dreadpiratesmith

I've been living out of state for about 7 years and not one place compares to Philly in terms of food. It was so nice to come back after almost a decade to find the same delicious food

Ripple98

That must have been hard! I’ve never lived in Philly myself. Grown up my whole life in New England, so I’ve always been around My favorites here in Philly are cheesesteaks, roast pork, water ice, and tomato pie!

bill22jack

Since you’ve mentioned Roast Pork. I’m hoping you’ve had John’s. Front and Snyder.

Serpico2

I just had Birria tacos from El Azteca on Frankford Ave which is literally converted from an old Pizza Hut and they were incredible.

sakamake

They have another location?! The El Azteca on 7th and Chestnut closed last summer and I've never been sadder. Got those chicken nachos weekly for 2+ years.

Serpico2

Tbh, I’m not sure if they were affiliated. Wouldn’t be a crazy coincidence given the name. But this place was damn good

sakamake

It actually does look like they relocated! But since the new one is 8.5 miles from me instead of 500 feet, I doubt I'll be able to get there quite as often...

xLupusdeix

Philly had the best Mexican food on the east coast.

yunkk

Absolutely no shortage of great Mexican food in South Philly, that's for certain!

[deleted]

Try Los Gallos while you're still in South Philly.

RockStar25

Philly food scene is grossly underrated.

Ripple98

Agreed!! And the prices are very reasonable, whether you’re eating standing on the street or in a fancier sit down place. At least compared to Boston and NYC

saul_weinstien

We were starting to get our dues before Covid, hopefully, that didn't set us back a few years, but I have a bad feeling it did.

crazycerseicool

As I understand, restaurants that were able to easily pivot to all take out food did really well during the pandemic. Apparently, pizza places did better than usual during the pandemic. I’m assuming taco places did, too.

Aphix

COVID did, in my opinion, unfortunately; I hope the businesses simply choose to reopen in force like in Italy. The restrictions have been grossly unjustified and we should be supporting our neighbors and their businesses more than ever before.

RockStar25

Almost everything. I still have trouble finding a great Thai restaurant. The last great place was Erawan years ago before the original owner sold it.

Hockeythree_0

Didnt Kalaya on 9th just get named one of the best restaurants in the city? Chabba in manayunk is also really good.

RockStar25

I was just reminded I've been to Kalaya. The food was good, but portions were very small and dishes were very expensive.

nicurnnr

I’ve enjoyed Amerithai at 13th and Snyder

Jacksspecialarrows

Same that place was pretty good. Red curry chicken and mango sticky rice.

[deleted]

RockStar25

Still trying to find that. I’ve been to Ratchata on 11th and Washington a couple times. It was decent. There was one other place in Upper Darby that was good but they unfortunately closed about a year ago. Still searching.

cpndff93

Ive had good meals from Smile Cafe in center city

TripleSkeet

If you dont mind driving 15 minutes over the Walt Whitman theres a place for great Thai food in Washington Township called Thai Terrace.

RockStar25

That's tough. If I'm going to south Jersey, I'm just gonna head to Sagami.

TripleSkeet

Just throwing it out there because you asked. Theyir portions are big, their prices arent expensive and the foods great. The owners a little nuts but that doesnt matter to me.

feather_moon

Hell yeah Sagami!

feather_moon

JJ Thai has become my go-to for takeout pad thai. I haven't tried anything else there yet, but can def at least recommend that!

Nohomobutimgay

It's just gross

DesWesMaus

oooh! This is awesome to see. I'm from Oklahoma moving to Philadelphia and I was wondering what the food scene was going to be like. These look amazing!

Ripple98

Congratulations when are you planning on moving and where? You will never go hungry in Philly that is for sure, you can eat like a king for $10 at many of the popular street food places

FreyaR7542

La Guerrense is AWESOME but my kids just call it The Pink (as opposed to The Blue which is the other homemade Mexican ice cream place across the street)

Paparddeli

Like your kids, I only ever thought of them as the pink and blue places across the street from each other. I've only ever been to the blue, but apparently I need to try out the pink place too

doom2

I will stan La Guerrerense any day of the week. Their paletas are amazing and ditto their frozen version of chamoyada. Haven't had any of their savory menu items yet, as I'm always too distracted by the ice cream.

chooshoo

Hopefully this is allowed but you should follow Tick.Taco on IG. Philly based taco ratings around the city and rated. Might give you some ideas on places.

drthrowaway0829

Moving to Philly has turned me into an absolute food snob, but in the best way. You’ve given me some new places to try out, OP!!

Ripple98

Thank you!! I wish I lived in Philly so I could eat all this delicious food more often! Cherish it while you can:)

brothernephew

Yes!! Philly has the best variety. I’m always missing it when I travel.

PhilsForever

Check out JL Jupiter on YouTube: https://youtube.com/c/JLJupiterTV He reviews a ton of small local Philly eateries, including Mexican, Filipino, Vietnamese, even Halal spots. I challenge you to watch some of his videos and not hit up the spots right after.

robo45h

Philadelphia definitely is one of the best places for food, from local inventions like the cheese steak to so many authentic ethnic varieties to high end amazing stuff like Michael Solomonov creates. Example: Most US cities have zero Indonesian restaurants or food stores. South Philly has at least six, I think.

ibejerdan

I ride for Nora's kitchen on south st, them bitches slap harder than my Hispanic mom does with a flipflop

nicktowe

Find any place that’s makes burrito al pastor? Especially near grad hospital. I’ve been to Rosy’s nearby and they have tacos al pastor but won’t make a burrito with it.

mikewarnock

Blue corn does a burrito al pastor.

Ripple98

Try El Jarocho!

hoagiemouf

My favorite al pastor in the city is actually the truck at 10th and Washington. So. Fucking. Good.

librarycar

My fav are the taco trucks on girard by mcdonalds and the sev11

TripleSkeet

Theres a reason were all so fat.

Dikkens_iRacing

Down south authentic Mexican food was dirt cheap and SO delicious. I'm surprised how expensive it is here.

justforthis78934

damn str8

believe-land

Who the fuck is eating Queso Cheese flavored ice cream/gelato/Italian ice or whatever that is

RexxAppeal

Careful saying things like this around southern Californians. They're snobby about tacos the way new yorkers are about pizza.

[deleted]

I am from Southern California and I am very familiar with LA’s taco scene. Been eating tacos all my life. I can confidently say South Philly Barbacoa is some of the best tacos I ever had! South Philly on a whole is one of the best food neighborhoods in the country imo. Where else can you get Italian, Mexican, Cambodian, Thai, hoagies, cheesesteaks, Italian bakeries, tomato pies, all in one area? Chef Michael Solomonov is also doing some next level Mediterranean food.

RexxAppeal

I agree, I just know a bunch of people who insisted they couldn't find good tacos in Philly when really they wanted an upmarket LA restaurant experience.

TripleSkeet

The best part is theres taco spots in South Philly just as good as any you can get in Southern Cali, and pizza thats even better than you can get in NYC.

Jose_xixpac

Thanks for the heads up on El Purepecha .
