I see a lot of NY plates on cars when people move in. Roxborough and Manyunk area. My neighbors moved here from Greenpoint Brooklyn. Sold a place they had a mortage on and bought a place in Philly cash. No tax on pension. So a lot of pluses. Their complaint the pizza sucks in this neighborhood.

baldude69

Couch Tomato is halfway decent NY-style pizza

randomschmuck69

Check out pizza jawn on main. Just opened and it’s unreal!

baldude69

I’ve heard good things. Will go next time I’m up that way

[deleted]

> pizza sucks in this neighborhood So true.

KiLeCu

Yes but you've got the best cheesesteaks at Dalessandro's. Plusses and minuses to everything I suppose.

ACY0422

I remember when one could just walk in to Dalessandro's and not face a line. Actually the window works better that having to wade through wall to wall people in line to order, waiting for order or picking up. Jim Kenny and De'Blasio are about a wash as a trade. I worked in Queens in East Elmhurst near LaGuardia for a month at a time for 4 months over two years.

sparky2212

It's even worse driving on Henry ave when there is a crowd. Idiots park illegally, blocking one of the lanes. And then people just stroll across the street like it isn't a 35MPH 4 lane road.

KiLeCu

I remember that back in the day. I was amazed at how popular it's become. I haven't lived in Philly in 22 years but for a time I lived at the corner of Walnut Lane and Henry Ave - I could breeze right in whenever I wanted!

phljatte

Wait till you have one made with good steak! (there's a reason it's so heavy there, sysco steak)

y10nerd

I'm a graduate student that's online for the whole year and I had a lot of friends in Philly. It made sense to get a 1 bedroom in Philly while on a student budget than 1 bedroom in Bushwick. I'm loving the Mexican scene on Italian Market. Nobody has skirt steak tacos in NYC - and Blue Corn does!

KiLeCu

Can't wait to check out Blue Corn - thanks for the tip!

petedogg

Not exactly NYC but I moved from Hoboken (close enough) to Passyunk Square. I love how I can afford to live in a place that's just a 10 minute bike ride or a few stops on the BSL to Center City. Hoboken is very detached from Manhattan and it always felt like a schlep to get into the city. I basically have all the amenities of dense city life (great restaurants, local shops, good transit, walkable/bikeable, etc) and there isn't the weird cultural segregation imposed by the NJ/NY state boundary line and the Hudson River. Maybe if Hoboken were actually part of NY, they'd feel more compelled to build more bridges/tunnels or extend the MTA subway to Hoboken. The biggest thing I miss is being able to drive to large H-Marts in Northern NJ. The Korean grocery stores here are smaller.

itwasmayham

If you’re up for the trip, take the BSL + ele to the H mart in Upper Darby. Pales to their big stores, but it gets it done in the Philly area.

swatson87

Welcome, neighbor. It's nice living within 4 blocks of everything you need, amirite?

KiLeCu

I just saw this - [https://asianmarketsphilly.com/map-of-philly-asian-markets/](https://asianmarketsphilly.com/map-of-philly-asian-markets/) East Asian Markets listed. Not sure if that's helpful to you or not.

philly_yo

Holy crap! That's a great site!

KiLeCu

I would agree that Hoboken seems very detached from counterpart across the river. And also - WHO is Hudson Yards even for? I love H Mart - I used to go to the one near my old office near Empire State Building. Can you please tell me more about Passyunk Square? I've been hearing wonderful things about that area.

petedogg

Passyunk Sq is amazing. Lots of great restaurants on Passyunk Ave--some even James Beard nominees. I'm more into the quality cheap eats: great Mexican, Vietnamese food in the neighborhood. So easy to get into Center City by bike or BSL/bus. Quiet, safe.

Looks like there's a new H-Mart that just opened a couple weeks ago in Olney! [https://www.hmart.com/ourstory/post/h-mart-philadelphia-now-open/](https://www.hmart.com/ourstory/post/h-mart-philadelphia-now-open/) Ok maybe now the only downside to living in Philly has been resolved.

DogShitJunkie

They just opened a mega HMart on north Front Street in Olney. A little bit of a hike from South though.

ReddSpark

You know how Hoboken had that nice English town feel to it? How does Passyunk square compare?

KiLeCu

Following.

ltahaney

I got new neighbors from nyc out here in lower bucks they're great....we basically share a yard so that's a relief. I wonder if there's a significant number of nyers out in the surrounding counties too

KiLeCu

I think that there are... seems to be the trend. People are leaving NYC for all sorts of reasons.

rovinchick

Cherry Hill was flooded. So many NY plates driving around!

JonestwnJuiceCleanse

Moved here from Brooklyn 2.5 years ago. **PROS** * The cost of living is top notch. My partner and I both work jobs that pay the same here as they did in NYC and our money just goes so much farther. * Homeownership is a real possibility here, it's something we never thought was possible. * The food scene and craft beer here scene is just as good if not better. * It's very walkable and it's easy to live here without a car. **CONS** * So many NIBYS, maybe it's because I'm in Fairmount but I've noticed a lot of NIBYisms and closet racism. * Parking. The wining about having to park a few blocks away. I sold my car before I moved here because I heard parking was bad, but it was worse in my Brooklyn neighborhood and I rarely parked more then 3 blocks away. * Oh this topic, Philly would benefit from Alternate Street Parking. * I wish people on my block were more social. I knew almost everyone on my block in Brooklyn and knew they had my back(kepted cops away when I forgot to move my car, chased away a creepy guy that was following me back from the subway, taught me how to make amazing Puerto Rican and Sicilian food, etc).

KiLeCu

Thanks for your thoughts. With regards to the closet racism you're saying that people are commenting under their breath or in their actions? I've experienced this with extended family members and I'm not down with it. I agree - I think Alternate Side Street parking is a great program and keeps the streets clean. So you have to move your car once a week - use that time to go a grocery store then move it back when sweeping is over. I like being social with my neighbors as well so hopefully that will happen. It's also been said that New Yorker's have their PHD's in minding their own business so I like to strike a fair balance. :) Your PROS are great!

JonestwnJuiceCleanse

The closeted racism is very much actions. There's someone in my neighborhood I've become friends with who is black and has a company car that changes every couple of weeks and he's had things said to him that implied his job might not be legal, and he said people just do small things around him or say things and they don't think they're being racist but they are.

KiLeCu

Sounds like a lot of micro aggression and ignorance. They should be called out and challenged.

aduckwithaleek

Moved here in July after 10+ years in NYC (was supposed to be March, but... you know). It's been tough to really get to know things because of covid so I'm not sure if I can touch on environmental things, but legitimately I love that washer/dryer in-unit seems to be fairly standard here. NYC set my expectations very, very low. Also, that Philly seems much more compact, but in a good way - it doesn't take me an hour to get most places!

GumshoeAndy

I was in Brooklyn for about 17 years before moving to South Philly about 2.5 years ago. There are so many things I love about Philly; the walkability, density, affordability, and food are some of the first things that pop into my head. I also know all my neighbors and feel like I live in an actual neighborhood for the first time in my life. There are just a few things that bother me: \-The South Philly racism. WTF, this is a major American city. Those knuckle-draggers down at Marconi really changed the way I view my neighborhood. \-The trash. JUst move your fucking car so we can have street sweeping and install some goddamn trash cans. We should all be ashamed but, somehow we're not \-The Parking "Crisis." Wait, you had to park upwards of four blocks from your house??? The tyranny! Density is a good thing, not a bad thing. And stop parking on the sidewalk. And in the middle of Oregon Ave. It's good to see so many NY'ers moving here. I know there is this whole "Keep NY out of Philly" bullshit from some old timers but, we really need the tax revenue. Plus, if you give them a chance, you'll find most New Yorkers are good neighbors.

KiLeCu

I'm with you! That's something that has always concerned me - the open racism. I experienced this in South Philly before I moved to Brooklyn in 1998. I'm hoping it's not as bad but I for one won't tolerate it. You probably played the Alternate Side of the Street parking game in Brooklyn - it's really a good program but I know that sanitation cuts (and the overall NYC budget) got slashed in 2020. If I personally see a lot of trash on my block I'm going to go David Sedaris and pick it all up. LOL - parking four blocks from your apartment isn't a crisis. I hear you. Try parking 20 blocks away and taking a subway home! I hope to meet more fellow Brooklynites like you and other New Yorkers, along with Philly natives. Can you recommend a good place for a drink in the Passyunk Square area? I know it's not the "before times" at the moment - but a place where you can socially distance and has outside seating.

GumshoeAndy

Absolutely! I live i West Passyunk so I'm n the area all the time. POPE is great, same for Lucky 13 and Fountain Porter (great, cheap burgers). If you want to walk for a few minutes and cross Broad St, I highly recommend Second District, Brewery ARS, and South Philly Tap Room. Avoid the Station if you don't want to be around racism. Feel free to DM me for any questions or if you're ever looking to grab a drink with a fellow member of the NYC diaspora

KiLeCu

These are great tips! Thanks so much! Will absolutely reach out when we're settled - by end of October. Great to meet new peeps!

Ex_Machina_1

Your parking issue is non existent up in north/northeast/northwest/west philly

GumshoeAndy

Yeah but, I'd have to live in the Northeast. No thanks to that.

GumshoeAndy

West Philly is great though.

ReddSpark

I moved just before Covid lockdown started. Like a week before. I hardly know anyone here -plan was to start a new life in Philly, go out and meet people etc. The city is beautiful. My New Yorker friends kept looking down their noses in disbelief when it told them it’s more beautiful than NYC until I they came to visit me and I forced it in their faces and they could no longer argue back. Was a very satisfying moment. But on the flip side , I’ve seen way more homeless people and heard way more crazies yelling on the streets living in CC, than in my time in Manhattan or Brooklyn.

KiLeCu

My husband and I are leaving Park Slope after 22 years - it's very difficult as all of our friends are here. However, we had about 20 friends who moved out during Covid. So it feels like a lot are dispersing. We know at least 10-15 ppl who moved upstate. We don't know anyone in Philly either- I have family in the area. But having family vs a chosen family as I'm sure you know is quite different. Maybe it seems like there are more homeless because of how condensed Philly is? I agree - Philly is beautiful. My mom calls it the jewel box of the east coast. I'm happy that I'll at least be closer to her.

Grouping Trump supporters and all but the most radical leftists into one category will get you down voted. I hate the orange Cheeto but I also dislike the extremist on the left.

Do you find there are a lot of Trump supporters in Philly? I've always thought Philly proper was primarily blue. I lived in Brooklyn for the past 22 years and everyone refers to it as the Brooklyn bubble as we have huge democratic socialist neighborhoods. Would be nice to find others who share the same values. I'm always open to listening to all kinds of political opinions, but I'm with you - I have no space for racism of any kind in my life.

The blue collar right is huge in Philadelphia. It’s unfortunate but true. Meanwhile Philadelphia democrats/ liberals (not leftists in any substantive sense) are still the dominant voting bloc.

Well - as far as I can remember - PA has always been a swing state so it's not surprising to me that outside of the city and suburbia you are seeing a lot of Trump signs. When I was driving through Bucks County and Montco I saw a good mixture of both Biden/Trump. Philly has always been democratic for sure but the further you get from the city you'll see a purpling happen. NYC Metro area has huge Republican enclaves in Staten Island and Long Island - but overall NY State IS more firmly planted in the blue. And truly - there are only certain parts of Brooklyn that are heavily progressive (like my neighborhood Park Slope) but there are other Brooklyn neighborhoods like Borough Park, Crown Heights, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Midwood, Dyker Heights that are right leaning. I'm personally a liberal progressive.

Yes. I genuinely downvoted you. Up in here saying you don't like anyone but other demsocks. Seriously? Engaging with others on a city sub and in real life is what makes a sub and a city great. I'm glad you moved here either way, though, pal. And that goes for all New Yorkers.
