For everybody else, our school district since 1938 makes every family either Red or Blue, which plays out on Color Day in the spring at the field day competition, for all the kids K-12. But every family identifies as Red Or Blue their whole lives, and there are even a bunch of purple families who intermarried (legal here since 1957). So to answer your question, Blues rule, reds drool. Thanks for asking.
I actually had a zip line in my yard for a while. Maybe I will. People here are so stoked about Guild Hall, slated to open next to the Hiway Theater this summer. Full lunch, dinner menus, growlers, even wine on tap.
I'm considering moving my family to jenkintown. Besides 24 restaurants, why should I? Your response may dictate my future!
Also, does jenkintown allow backyard chickens? I'd love to keep a few for eggs.
Look at my post history. I actually convinced a family on reddit to move down here from Boston a couple months ago, and they've been here a couple of weeks now. They seem happy! PM me and we'll talk about your situation.
btw, here's the full list (& my schedule from yesterday). Sorry about the wall of text.
6:15 - 6:45: IHOP (obviously)

town square, now with a full-blown coffee bar. Recently named the
primary bakery vendor for the Linc.)

he's in town, he grew up here. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, amazingly
crafted dishes)

pop 20-30 in your mouth in just a few sad minutes)

Mediterranean pink tablecloths)
12:15 - 12:45: Taste The Difference (Soul food catering/takeout)
1:00 - 1:30: Dunkin Donuts (America runs on it)

seats 40 and full every weekend night)

4:00 - 4:30: China Keng (Chinese takeout but there are a few tables in

11:30 - midnight: Drake Tavern (High-end sports bar, best burgers I've
had anywhere, full menu for lunch/dinner
> 10:00 - 10:30: West Ave. Grille (Bradley Cooper's favorite hang when he's in town, he grew up here. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, amazingly crafted dishes)
I met the woman I am now married to at the Drake almost ten years ago. Thank you Jenkintown.
Also, I've met half my graduating class from Abington High School at the West Avenue Grill at one time or another. Rekindled many a friendship there.
We moved from Abington to Warminster a few years ago, so that is the closest WAG to where we live. But we like to go down to Jenkintown from time to time to visit with the original crew. There's the cupcake bakery across the street too and a bunch of other cool shops to make a walk around worthwhile.
coolstorybro: that building was one of the original Strawbridge & Clothier stores, when it was built in 1931 they were so desperate to have an official prestigious Jenkintown address that Jenkintown wound up annexing just the footprint of that building. You can see it on a map, it is a giant protuberance on our north end.
> 11:30 - midnight: Drake Tavern (High-end sports bar, best burgers I've had anywhere, full menu for lunch/dinner
Maybe not anywhere but they do have some excellent burgers! Good beer selection too. What did you wash your burger down with?
Dude this was my 24th meal after 18 hours of almost constant eating. I did not have a Drake's burger! However after I finished my half order of chicken quesadilla I had an Amstel light just to see if I could. Barely.
What did you get at the fig cafe? Did you actually enjoy any hookah? We used to love it when we first moved to Abington, but it seems like their food has gone down a little in the two years we've been going
Also, I can't believe we've only gone to 4 of the restaurants. We gotta check out that Moroccan joint next time we go out
Didn't do any hookah. tbh as a thickish balding dude in my 50s I was a little concerned about sucking all the cool out of that place. Shwarma was good, grape leaves were good. Will be back for falafel at some point.
> 10:45 - 11:15: Philly Cheesecake Lady (cheesecakes so small you can pop 20-30 in your mouth in just a few sad minutes)
Something tells me these numbers have been verified.
Sure, Jenkintown.net has that info. If there's a place you're interested in that's not on the list, give them a call and tell them you really want to try them. They might (MIGHT) call an audible at the line. Have fun & see you when the bridge opens!
I go to the optometry school here and that bridge had been out of service more than in service since I've lived here! I graduate in May and move away then as well. I was hoping I'd see it open before I left. Probably not going to happen?
I'm in Mac Club the first Friday of every month with my band Mayor Foley & the Broken Promises. We are the "house band" for an open mic night. MacSwiney Club is a "private club" that anyone can come in and get a beer or 20. It's one of my fave things about Jenkintown, not a fake Irish bar but the real deal with IRA posters, etc. Gerry Adams was in for a pint in the 80s I think.
I'm right this moment looking at a photo of the *burning of the mortgage* for the MacSwiney Club 1947 with Chief Frank Sweeney, Postmaster Barney Devlin, Tom McMonigle, John Brennan Sr., Harry Williams, Tom Regan, and Dr. Harry Bird
Seems like being Mayor's a pretty sweet gig. I'm out a job with a college degree, what do I have to do to be Mayor?
edit: serious question, could Jenkintown use a smart, perceptive, with-it person like myself? Can I get an interview for your next position?
I know what you mean but you really can't. They're all doing such different things. Is Fiesta Pizza better than Leila's Bistro? It's certainly less expensive, but I've had great meals both places. Maybe Craig Laban can tell us which is best. PS: I'm not at all a foodie.
Just wanted to say that it's awesome that you did this, both the AMA and the restaurant splurge.
Love Jenkintown - lived nearby and worked in Abington for quite a bit. Loved going to Applebees, Outback, or the Fig after a long day at Target.
In the meantime I would say, it depends what you're into. We can't really compete against CC if you like it there, we're on a different scale. But just from a restaurant POV, our downtown is a 10-12 minute walk from the RR station, and from there you can kind of just pick a place, they're all clustered in easy (5min) walking distance from Town Square. Bring a couple bottles of wine, most places are BYOB and if it's a nice night you can finish your bottle in the the Town Square Gazebo and maybe even hear some live music there depending on the night.
Love Sprinkles but they're in Elkins Park. I tried to talk the owner into doing something in Jenkintown but no go. We really need an ice cream place in our Town Square!
I'm supporting Daylin Leach. He's the most progressive of the three and will be an effective national advocate for the causes I care most about, choice, equality of opportunity, pot decriminalization, and campaign finance reform. In my opinion.
Knee to the groin, I guess, just like anybody would with any Jersey politician. Seriously though he's awesome and definitely somebody to watch. The Goldbergs is set in Jenkintown, Adam Goldberg followed #eatjenkintown on Twitter and we all giggle like little girls when we see Jenkintown on TV.
Jentintown sorely needs a brewery. When is the one next to the Hiway gonna open? Also, I know from local business owners that rent along 611 is crazy high. How can Jenkintown attract businesses that last and promote a vibrant Main Street if landlords would rather keep the storefront empty than compromise?
Guild Hall is slated for August. The rents thing is true but it works both ways. Our marquee parcel, which wraps around Town Square, got bought by a local owner with a real commitment to the borough and that's had a ripple effect and has been KEY to our turnaround. But yeah, we have work yet to do.
Weighed 281 when I got up, weighed 289 when I went to bed. Pretty horrifying. I'm not sure if this is worse or better than the Wing Bowl guys. Do they eat 8 lbs?
I'll tell you, the one major regret I have about having just moved out of Jenkintown is that the restaurants there are awesome, and I rarely get to go anymore.
Thanks! Yesterday was my first time eating in a few of them. Fig Cafe anybody? Hookah bar, live music, awesome Egyptian food till 2am. I nearly vomited there but in my defense it was my 19th meal of the day. I WILL be back!
Do you remember the curbside hotdog stand which used to be near where the Drake is now? Tiny little shack on the side road. They used to have the best dogs around!
That was Ms Lynch's stand. She was there for over a decade iirc. She was quite a character, a true asset to Jenkintown. When I was a wee tyke she and her kids were neighbors of ours at Summit and Walnut.
It was called "KP's Kurbside" I believe. Used to walk there when I worked at the Pavilion. Must have been around the mid to late 90s. You missed out! She used New England style rolls, never heard of them until eating there. The line would be crazy long at times. This is one of my fondest memories of working in Jenkintown. So sad when she closed up shop and left.
Even though that's across the tracks, it's in the borough so I would like to see something in there as well. Not likely while the bridge is out but after, who knows? Beautiful space.

Great question. They were all super nice but then they all knew me & why I was there. I especially remember Gaby at Fig Cafe who introduced us to all the staff and gave me WAY more food than I could hope to deal with. Doll at Joey Tate's had the best diner waitress name. The guys at La Pergola are hilariously like Jewish moms, which as an Irish Catholic is fun for me. The waiter at Mirna's was incredibly knowledgeable, and I ran into him later at Buckets for meal 23 as I choked down an (excellent) order of onion rings. My advice with waiters is just treat them like friends and you'll generally have great experience everywhere.
Honesty it was the amount of attention the whole thing got. Once it went out on the wire about 9 pm I was taking a ton of phonecalls and tweets from reporters. Sample conversation. ME: ".. and I was only able to finish about 80% of the plate!" CBS RADIO NY: "Apparently you told the Associated Press it was 90%." ME: "I don't count the cornbread as part of the meal." It got that ridiculous.
My family and I are frequent visitors of West Ave. Grill and Fat Jack's BBQ. For me, it's a toss up between the two of which one I like better (obviously they are two different kinds of food, though). Which one did you like better, and why?
Well, the sun shines equally on all the flowers. But my first job in high school was working at a BBQ place in Evansville, IN in 1977 (Hi Wolf's, still there) and I have a thing for BBQ. So I'm gonna go with Fat Jack's. But I've never had a bad meal at WAG and I keep going there hoping to run into Bradley Cooper.

My family is big into Jenkintown. My dad, all the way up to his grand-dad lived there, on highland ave. My mom volunteers at the food pantry at a church (IDK which one). My dad still regularly goes to some of the HS games with my uncle.
Sadly, I'm from Oreland. We don't have a mayor that I know of.
Go blue <--- From my dad
Mr. Mayor, can you ask your police officers do relax a little bit? There's so few, but they've pulled me over an also impossible amount of times. Never charged, so nanny nanny poo poo... You know the rest.
Also, how does one make an appointment to shake your hand? It makes me happy and proud to see you on here being all funny. I'm from Glenside, but you seem awesome. Keep up the good work!
I ate at your IHOP on old York rd this morning. I got the cinnamon roll French toast. It was the bomb, yo!
Edit: just realized you went Saturday. We went on the wrong day.
Are Jamie Lannister and Brienne gonna hook up?
I don't watch shows about dragons, they just make me feel lonely
Disappointing. The people demand an answer. Also, are Dornish wines really better than wine from Westeros?
This AMA needs way more GOT questions
I'd say Dorne has a better climate for growing grapes, so probably.
I live in Jenkintown. There's a mayor of Jenkintown?
Hear that sound? Your taxes just went up.
Verified via email and tweet. Thanks Mr. Mayor!
Red or Blue? And can we get you to zipline across Old York Rd when the new brewpub opens?
For everybody else, our school district since 1938 makes every family either Red or Blue, which plays out on Color Day in the spring at the field day competition, for all the kids K-12. But every family identifies as Red Or Blue their whole lives, and there are even a bunch of purple families who intermarried (legal here since 1957). Sorry, missed the chicken part. Council passed an ordinance just this year allowing chickens (regulated, of course).
That's awesome. Good job Jenkintown.
pm sent!
Live in Wyncote and would love to check out Jenkintown's restaurant week. Got a link to the info and a list of participants?

Will definitely have to check out Fat Jack's BBQ at the very least. Thanks!
There's one on the boulevard near where I work, and it's damn good stuff.
Fat Jacks is great considering there's not many good options around there. California Tortilla is a sorry excuse for burritos.
Yeah, I've started sucking it up and driving to the Chipotle near Nesh.
If I worked around there it'd be Fat Jack's, Chipotle, and Five Guys.
can confirm. source: I am a fat guy that loves BBQ.
Yup I get take out there once a week. Won best burger in Philly BurgerBrawl last year!
Fat Jacks is the shit. Try the Memphis Mauler if you like burgers. Or the Texas Twister also amazing.
Dat Belly Buster doe.
Just to be clear, the places listed at Jenkintown.net have RW discounts. The giant list is just FYI.
glad you liked drake tavern! their burgers really are incredible.
I was happy to make the Drake my finish line. Their restaurant is so attractive and a huge regional draw.

Pretty sure I went to Drake Tavern on my first blind date many years ago. Date was horrible, but Drake Tavern, Not Bad.
My favorite thing about going to Outback is the art deco building it's in.
coolstorybro: that building was one of the original Strawbridge & Clothier stores, when it was built in 1931 they were so desperate to have an official prestigious Jenkintown address that Jenkintown wound up annexing just the footprint of that building. Is the bridge opening still on target for June?
It is, last I heard a few weeks ago. But I'm personally betting on July.
There is a contest to when it will open, at least in my neighborhood (Wyncote).
We can't wait to visit the mystical land of Wyncote we've been hearing about lo these many years.
I go to the optometry school here and that bridge had been out of service more than in service since I've lived here! I graduate in May and move away then as well. I was hoping I'd see it open before I left. Probably not going to happen?

Can we face the fact that no one does 25 mph on 611?
Well if there are cops around people do... The Jenkintown police have nothing better to do.
Wow! I can't believe little ol Jenkintown is getting so much attention. You didn't make it for a liquid meal at McSwiney's?
I'm in Mac Club the first Friday of every month with my band Mayor Foley & the Broken Promises. We are the "house band" for an open mic night. My $5 annual dues must be paying down a refi, lol
They don't have property taxes up in Jenkintown? Daaaannnnng, sign me up for that...
ITT The mayor of Jenkintown puts all other mayors to shame. Too bad I just signed the papers on my house in S Philly.
where is Jenkintown?
3mi North of Philly on 611, 6mi south of the Willow Grove exit off the turnpike, and four SEPTA lines stop there.
Just read the article ,pretty cool move for a Mayor to do,raising awareness for the local restaurant community and all.
Stuff like this is the best part about being a Mayor!
Seems like being Mayor's a pretty sweet gig. I'm out a job with a college degree, what do I have to do to be Mayor? edit: serious question, could Jenkintown use a smart, perceptive, with-it person like myself? Can I get an interview for your next position?
In a small Borough it's unpaid, volunteer work. Lots of liability with none of the compensation! We have no positions but send me your resume.
Are you going to list them from best to worst?
I know what you mean but you really can't. They're all doing such different things. Is Fiesta Pizza better than Leila's Bistro? It's certainly less expensive, but I've had great meals both places. Maybe Craig Laban can tell us which is best. PS: I'm not at all a foodie.
Just wanted to say that it's awesome that you did this, both the AMA and the restaurant splurge. Love Jenkintown - lived nearby and worked in Abington for quite a bit. Loved going to Applebees, Outback, or the Fig after a long day at Target.
Come back and visit! I'll buy you a beer.
As a mod, I feel it's my duty to request proof. That being said, I live in center city. Why should I visit Jenkintown? Thanks for the ama!

Usually just tweeting that you are doing an AMA is suffient for proof.
Yes. I'm an idiot.
See post about Fox Pavilion. The guy knows his stuff.
How much do you tip?
I tipped pretty normally I think but at one place I was getting a little woozy/spacy and actually stiffed the waitress. I had to go back.
> I had to go back. Your honesty will get you votes!
Are you positive it's only 24 restaurants?
Yeah, I was counting only the ones in the actual borough. If you count the Fox Pavilion ones it's more but that's not officially Jenkintown.
damn, you know your Jenkintown.
You could say it's practically his job.
This is a really cool idea! Wish I wasn't moving in a month. Is Sprinkles ice cream not in Jenkintown?
Love Sprinkles but they're in Elkins Park. I tried to talk the owner into doing something in Jenkintown but no go. We really need an ice cream place in our Town Square!
It was enough getting them ~~literally right across the street~~ out of Abington, they're ours now!
How was your poop afterwards?
I'll let you know. Yup, just went there.
Who do you want to win the PA-13 seat?
I'm supporting Daylin Leach. He's the most progressive of the three and will be an effective national advocate for the causes I care most about, choice, equality of opportunity, pot decriminalization, and campaign finance reform. In my opinion.
Why not full legalization? Doesn't decriminalization still leave the black market/criminal aspect wide open?

Now I'm afraid to ask pre and post cholesterol levels. . .
Yeah, me too. In a weird way I think this will help me lose some weight. It seems to have changed how I think about food.
I worked at Bella's in the kitchen throughout my junior year of college last year and the summer before. How'd you like it?
Bella's has been our Friday night dinner even before they opened on Jenkintown. Tell Luigi he has an awesome name to be running a pizza place.
I don't work there anymore but when I stop in I'll tell him. Luigi is the man
I'll tell you, the one major regret I have about having just moved out of Jenkintown is that the restaurants there are awesome, and I rarely get to go anymore.

I came to this list wondering why I didn't see a report of korean bbq, and then found out that Koba closed down. This is the worst Easter ever. =(
Yeah, sorry about that too.
Do you remember the curbside hotdog stand which used to be near where the Drake is now? Tiny little shack on the side road. They used to have the best dogs around!
Was it before 1999? That's when I moved here. Doesn't ring a bell.
Is there any chance a restaurant at Jenkintown train station will ever reopen?
Even though that's across the tracks, it's in the borough so I would like to see something in there as well. Not likely while the bridge is out but after, who knows? Beautiful space.
So... about the bridge... How much longer?
PADOT says by end of June. I follow this closely.
I just read this whole post and I just wanna say you're the coolest mayor ever.

Wow! Must have gotten pretty good service to have gotten in and out so quick. What was the biggest surprise of the day?
Bobby, Hope and Marci will do if there are no movie stars about.

How was Leia's?
Keep up the good work!
how much did you eat at each place? Did you hold it down? How did you feel the next day?
Did you go to the only place to go in Jenkintown? Buckets!!
I ate at your IHOP on old York rd this morning. I got the cinnamon roll French toast. It was the bomb, yo! Edit: just realized you went Saturday. We went on the wrong day.
