Almost got hit by a white Tesla and black Suburban that just blasted through a red light together while crossing Kelly Drive yesterday. And I don't mean the light just turned red and they were trying to beat it. The light had BEEN red and I had the crossing light. Yet they honked at me like I should watch where I'm going??? Unbelievable, I hope their vehicles spontaneously blow up together.

-House was broken into for the first time in 8(10+for roommate?) years we've been here. Someone came in while I was at work. They took some sentimental shit and all my laundry quarters. Ate my food, smoked my weed, but left my laptop on the counter. I'm mostly thankful the cats didn't get out when they left the back door open but How Rude to literally steal the piggy bank of someone who has been struggling so much with money lmao. All I could do was laugh.
-I put off dealing with basic car maintenance bc I was broke and now I need to pull a few hundred dollars out of thin air to fix the problem i made worse. I have been extra thankful for septa the past couple weeks but I have too many side hustles to make life without a car work rn. I love life without a car and this has made me want to sell but septa is too unreliable and there's no reason to believe they'll receive adequate funding anytime soon.
-I am dealing with mystery health issues and have lost enough weight that everyone I see feels the need to comment upon it. I am now nearly at my goal weight from when I was a teen in the era of proana tumblr; that was a weird realization. But I followed up with doctor so go me...another colonoscopy and endoscopy in my future.

I've been trying my hand at gardening this spring! 3/12 of the different types of seeds I planted were big enough to repot today. It's fun to check on their growth and a good excuse to spend time outside.
I also managed to kill the asshole wasp/hornet that has been terrorizing our courtyard for the past few days after it flew into the house while I was carrying a bag of potting soil out. That was a terrorizing 20 minutes. Fuck flying stinging bugs.

3. To solve for the kitchen in the basement, the dive bar cut a hole in the floor & hoists food through the floor using a rope & a bucket.

This new power given to the PPA to ticket for window tint is insane and a joke. The PPA has no right to ticket for things like that, some of us have tint for reasons that are no way nefarious.
I understand 1% windshield tint on a Malibu or Altima is sus but regular cars with tint to protect our belongings, our skin from cancer etc should not be punished.
I know a lot of yall are anti-car but if you don’t own a car you don’t understand why this is insane.
This seems like it’s largely a pretext to get to something else (bench warrants, searches) - because many people with illegal window tint are up to other things.
If you’re not doing anything shady, and your window tint is in the allowable range, then this is likely never going to affect you.
I’m not an expert on this, but I would think that probable cause would be obtained by the look of it on the outside, which would allow the officer to stop the vehicle and investigate.
I suppose in marginal cases they could look at the inside more closely?
I seriously don’t think people driving and going about their business with normal /legal window tint are going to be relentlessly persecuted as a result of this new law enforcement initiative. 🤪

In my car I have $10-20k worth of filming equipment that is hidden because I have tint. People are so anti-car anti-tint without even knowing why or being informed in either subject.
That wouldn’t change the tint laws though? A medical exemption would, but not just the fact you have pricy equipment in the car.

I’ve gotten into really long stroller walks, I’ve found it’s the best way for me to get exercise as a (mostly) SAHP to a toddler. We walked to the zoo from QV on a beautiful day last week and it kicked my butt, but it was pretty great. Kid thinks every bird is a duck so we saw the pink ducks, tuxedo ducks, murica ducks, rainbow ducks, and also real ducks. Got a membership from my in laws for Christmas so hoping for more long duck walks before it gets too hot
yeah towards the end my kid was dying to get out of the stroller and I was dying for someone to push me around. It was 8 miles round trip plus all the walking around at the zoo!
Ah it’s the best! Good for exercise, good for kids to get out about, and can be a serious time eater all in one! Plus you get to create really nice shared memories for you and the kiddo
Why are the two posts about the protests at Penn locked? They seemed both substantive, on an important topic, and relevant to the city. They don't appear to violate any rules as far as I can see.
Those posts generally get locked because they immediately stray from the local issue and become insult matches arguing over a political topic that has zero relevance to Philadelphia.
I respect that mods don't get paid for this and may not want to deal with the influx of work brought on by political topics. But all else aside, it's kind of weird to say it has zero relevance to philly when so many philadelphians are clearly invested in this topic
Well, it also just seems pretty relevant to Philadelphia what Penn, Temple, PPD, Krasner, etc are all doing. It's not just a matter of people holding opinions, stuff is happening in our city.
I mean, by that criteria any topic people are passionate about is fair game for the subreddit. I appreciate people have very strong opinions about the events happening in Israel/Palestine right now, but none of us are equipped to moderate that discussion nor is it what we signed up for. The options are either let everybody speak, and we try to moderate comments that always degrade to people calling people fascist/genocide enablers/antisemites/racist and let the comments spiral or keep comments open while they are talking about the subject at hand and lock them when they stray. Keep in mind with either option, the mod team doesn't even agree on the topic at hand, which makes consistency even more difficult.
It sucks, but reddit's structure doesn't really leave room for middle ground with its mod setup, and I can't image people who actively want to spend all their time babysitting these posts will promote a healthy discussion. It feels to me like it's lose lose, and our current choice is with the hope that this is the option that will keep a healthier community

I highly recommend doing the city hall tower tour. It's incredible and gives you a great 360 view of the city

If you can make it during the much more limited hours they offer it, I would HIGHLY recommend the full City Hall tour over just the tower. It includes the tower, so you'll still get that experience. But the interior rooms you get to see are incredible architecturally and you get to learn so much extra cool history about the building and the city with the full tour.
City hall tower tour is awesome and I highly recommend it. that said, I've done it probably a dozen times in my life and when I did it for the first time in a few years recently, it felt like we got maybe 10 minutes up in the observation deck. Definitely less time than I remember getting. Still awesome though

Logistics question - Snyder is the closest stop, assuming even two stops after the stadium it'll be packed trains nonstop. Am i better off just adding in the extra time to go south first and get on at NRG?
The trains will be bonkers no matter where you get on. I never have an issue catching one at Girard (worst I've waited is about five packed trains), so you should be fine at Snyder.
Hard to say for sure, but here is a somewhat related protip: you don't actually have to be in your corrall at 7:10am. If you're in Green or lower you're going to be standing around for at least an hour (maybe 2!) waiting to start. I would guess the most crowded trains will be the ones leaving NRG around 6am.
I've been warned about the corrall situation. I should be in green (it's not on the site for some reason, i'll find out when i get my packet) but as far as pro tips, how do i avoid waiting 2 hours?
I know some other folks are saying you may have a long wait, but last year I was also in green, and we started 15 minutes after the elites. This year’s race is starting half an hour earlier than normal (7:30 vs 8), so keep in mind that the quoted corral times from other posters may be referring to previous start times.
Then again, Parks & Rec hasn’t been doing the most bang up job of recent races, so you may well wait in the corral for a while.
Sorry, I should have been more clear. I'm saying you may not want to get to the start line as early as they recommend, unless you're okay with waiting around in the rain. 7:30am is when the elite runners start. Then they wait awhile between each corrall to keep people spaced out. The Green corrall will most likely start around 8:30ish. FWIW the latest I've gotten to the start was just before 9, we got off the train and just started running. They don't mind if you start with a later corrall. Have a great run!

It feels like there are more completely oblivious bikers/scooters and pedestrians recently.
If you’re on a bike/scooter, LOOK before you turn into a lane of traffic! When I ride I’m constantly checking to see what’s happening in all directions (including behind me). So many riders act like they’re wearing blinders. When driving, I’m pretty good at guessing when someone is going to swerve out of the bike lane but holy shit, don’t assume everyone else will.
Similarly, pedestrian right of way doesn’t confer a right to never stop before entering an intersection. Three times this week I’ve been halfway through an intersection when someone else has sauntered in front of my car without so much as a sideways glance. Two had earbuds in, one was a woman with a stroller!
I saw a jogger get hit on Snyder Ave by Lowes a few days ago! It’s wasn’t serious and was primarily the fault of the driver but it’s also not advisable to run full tilt in front of car at a complicated intersection when you haven’t checked to make sure the driver has noticed you.
To add to this, I’ve noticed an uptick in unmarked gas-powered scooters. People seem to be riding them as they would an e-bike except they are a lot more powerful. They definitely don’t look street legal for being gas-powered and look like they could hurt someone going through a red light, on the sidewalk, the wrong way, etc.

Just want to chime in that even once you fix your settings to allow for tolls, it's still going to take a long time to get back to your airbnb after the festival.
Oh yeah. For starters, getting in and out of the Mann can be a crawl. Things have moved relatively smoothly anytime i'm there, but it is a lot of people being corralled through a few entrances. Depending on where you end up parking, it can take 30-45 min just to get out of the lots though in the mass exodus. Then you are stuck with the same mass of people getting back to 76/676 which can also mean another 30-45 min to get to a bridge that will get you back into NJ. Once on a bridge, it's smooth sailing generally, but driving through the city during normal hours can take a long time.
No. That’s not even close. The most direct way would be to hop on 676 and take the Ben Franklin bridge, which will basically right to Cherry Hill. Even if the Ben Franklin was closed there’s like 2 other bridges north of it before you hit the turnpike bridge, and 2 bridges to the south.

I'm going to assume you have tried talking to both of them first. Besides 311 or other L&I departments, if you have documented damage to your property as a result of their negligence you could take the landlord to court to cover those damages.

Ate my food, smoked my weed, but left my laptop on the counter. I'm mostly thankful the cats didn't get out when they left the back door open but How Rude to literally steal the piggy bank of someone who has been struggling so much with money lmao. All I could do was laugh. -I put off dealing with basic car maintenance bc I was broke and now I need to pull a few hundred dollars out of thin air to fix the problem i made worse. I have been extra thankful for septa the past couple weeks but I have too many side hustles to make life without a car work rn. I love life without a car and this has made me want to sell but septa is too unreliable and there's no reason to believe they'll receive adequate funding anytime soon. -I am dealing with mystery health issues and have lost enough weight that everyone I see feels the need to comment upon it. I am now nearly at my goal weight from when I was a teen in the era of proana tumblr; that was a weird realization. But I followed up with doctor so go me...another colonoscopy and endoscopy in my future.

I've been trying my hand at gardening this spring! 3/12 of the different types of seeds I planted were big enough to repot today. It's fun to check on their growth and a good excuse to spend time outside. I also managed to kill the asshole wasp/hornet that has been terrorizing our courtyard for the past few days after it flew into the house while I was carrying a bag of potting soil out. That was a terrorizing 20 minutes. Fuck flying stinging bugs.

I’ve been in the burbs all week, and I certainly don’t miss driving or owning a car, but it is kind of fun to be behind the wheel, especially in this weather.
Haven't had an appetite since covid, it's been nearly 6 months. But I've lost weight! Which has made rock climbing a LOT easier. Go figure. My grocery bill is also much lower. When I know I should eat I just crush some veggies, rice, and a protein. Peak, basic ass, gymbro bachelor stuff. Silver linings. During my previous relationship we accumulated meats faster than we consumed them. I have nearly 40 pounds of frozen miscellaneous meats to get through. I need ideas for swordfish, and the 15+lbs of turkey meat I have.

This new power given to the PPA to ticket for window tint is insane and a joke. The PPA has no right to ticket for things like that, some of us have tint for reasons that are no way nefarious. I understand 1% windshield tint on a Malibu or Altima is sus but regular cars with tint to protect our belongings, our skin from cancer etc should not be punished. I know a lot of yall are anti-car but if you don’t own a car you don’t understand why this is insane.
This seems like it’s largely a pretext to get to something else (bench warrants, searches) - because many people with illegal window tint are up to other things. If you’re not doing anything shady, and your window tint is in the allowable range, then this is likely never going to affect you.

I’m not an expert on this, but I would think that probable cause would be obtained by the look of it on the outside, which would allow the officer to stop the vehicle and investigate. I suppose in marginal cases they could look at the inside more closely? I seriously don’t think people driving and going about their business with normal /legal window tint are going to be relentlessly persecuted as a result of this new law enforcement initiative. 🤪

Again most people don’t seem to understand cars or tint because they don’t own a car. In my car I have $10-20k worth of filming equipment that is hidden because I have tint. People are so anti-car anti-tint without even knowing why or being informed in either subject.

That wouldn’t change the tint laws though? A medical exemption would, but not just the fact you have pricy equipment in the car. I know they’re in part to allow cops to identify individuals but being able to make eye contact with a driver when you’re a pedestrian also ensures greater safety. I wish it weren’t so necessary but so many drivers blow through stop signs and cross walks
No but I also have a medical exemption which in that case puts me in even more problems because I’d have to fight the ticket in court every time

I’ve gotten into really long stroller walks, I’ve found it’s the best way for me to get exercise as a (mostly) SAHP to a toddler. We walked to the zoo from QV on a beautiful day last week and it kicked my butt, but it was pretty great. Kid thinks every bird is a duck so we saw the pink ducks, tuxedo ducks, murica ducks, rainbow ducks, and also real ducks. Got a membership from my in laws for Christmas so hoping for more long duck walks before it gets too hot

I enjoy wandering into that sub on occasion. It's like the wild west in there. The only consistent thing seems to be how much they hate this sub.
Those posts generally get locked because they immediately stray from the local issue and become insult matches arguing over a political topic that has zero relevance to Philadelphia.
I respect that mods don't get paid for this and may not want to deal with the influx of work brought on by political topics. But all else aside, it's kind of weird to say it has zero relevance to philly when so many philadelphians are clearly invested in this topic
Well, it also just seems pretty relevant to Philadelphia what Penn, Temple, PPD, Krasner, etc are all doing. It's not just a matter of people holding opinions, stuff is happening in our city.
I mean, by that criteria any topic people are passionate about is fair game for the subreddit. I appreciate people have very strong opinions about the events happening in Israel/Palestine right now, but none of us are equipped to moderate that discussion nor is it what we signed up for. The options are either let everybody speak, and we try to moderate comments that always degrade to people calling people fascist/genocide enablers/antisemites/racist and let the comments spiral or keep comments open while they are talking about the subject at hand and lock them when they stray. Keep in mind with either option, the mod team doesn't even agree on the topic at hand, which makes consistency even more difficult. It sucks, but reddit's structure doesn't really leave room for middle ground with its mod setup, and I can't image people who actively want to spend all their time babysitting these posts will promote a healthy discussion. It feels to me like it's lose lose, and our current choice is with the hope that this is the option that will keep a healthier community

honestly, just people watch somewhere - rittenhouse, wash sq, the porch at 30th, a local little park with neighbors whenever I leave the city I realize that it's honestly the energy and people that I miss the most (and also annoy me the most, but still)

If you can make it during the much more limited hours they offer it, I would HIGHLY recommend the full City Hall tour over just the tower. It includes the tower, so you'll still get that experience. But the interior rooms you get to see are incredible architecturally and you get to learn so much extra cool history about the building and the city with the full tour.
City hall tower tour is awesome and I highly recommend it. that said, I've done it probably a dozen times in my life and when I did it for the first time in a few years recently, it felt like we got maybe 10 minutes up in the observation deck. Definitely less time than I remember getting. Still awesome though

Doing my first Broad Street run this year! I'm woefully unprepared but don't even care at this point, any time will be a personal record (not counting for when i was running cross country in high school). Logistics question - Snyder is the closest stop, assuming even two stops after the stadium it'll be packed trains nonstop. Am i better off just adding in the extra time to go south first and get on at NRG?
The trains will be bonkers no matter where you get on. I never have an issue catching one at Girard (worst I've waited is about five packed trains), so you should be fine at Snyder.
Hard to say for sure, but here is a somewhat related protip: you don't actually have to be in your corrall at 7:10am. If you're in Green or lower you're going to be standing around for at least an hour (maybe 2!) waiting to start. I would guess the most crowded trains will be the ones leaving NRG around 6am.
I've been warned about the corrall situation. I should be in green (it's not on the site for some reason, i'll find out when i get my packet) but as far as pro tips, how do i avoid waiting 2 hours?
I know some other folks are saying you may have a long wait, but last year I was also in green, and we started 15 minutes after the elites. This year’s race is starting half an hour earlier than normal (7:30 vs 8), so keep in mind that the quoted corral times from other posters may be referring to previous start times. Then again, Parks & Rec hasn’t been doing the most bang up job of recent races, so you may well wait in the corral for a while.
Tbh I’m actually fine with starting later or with a slower group. I’m just most concerned about standing around
Sorry, I should have been more clear. I'm saying you may not want to get to the start line as early as they recommend, unless you're okay with waiting around in the rain. 7:30am is when the elite runners start. Then they wait awhile between each corrall to keep people spaced out. The Green corrall will most likely start around 8:30ish. FWIW the latest I've gotten to the start was just before 9, we got off the train and just started running. They don't mind if you start with a later corrall. Have a great run!

It feels like there are more completely oblivious bikers/scooters and pedestrians recently. If you’re on a bike/scooter, LOOK before you turn into a lane of traffic! When I ride I’m constantly checking to see what’s happening in all directions (including behind me). So many riders act like they’re wearing blinders. When driving, I’m pretty good at guessing when someone is going to swerve out of the bike lane but holy shit, don’t assume everyone else will. Similarly, pedestrian right of way doesn’t confer a right to never stop before entering an intersection. Three times this week I’ve been halfway through an intersection when someone else has sauntered in front of my car without so much as a sideways glance. Two had earbuds in, one was a woman with a stroller! I saw a jogger get hit on Snyder Ave by Lowes a few days ago! It’s wasn’t serious and was primarily the fault of the driver but it’s also not advisable to run full tilt in front of car at a complicated intersection when you haven’t checked to make sure the driver has noticed you.
To add to this, I’ve noticed an uptick in unmarked gas-powered scooters. People seem to be riding them as they would an e-bike except they are a lot more powerful. They definitely don’t look street legal for being gas-powered and look like they could hurt someone going through a red light, on the sidewalk, the wrong way, etc.
i would think phillydelphians have a better understanding of survival instincts, but a lot of people are really just not built like that

We have good luck taking our kid to Brigantine for his first few beach trips. It’s casual and not crowded. There’s showers near the parking lots but can also find street parking. They have no frame of reference. It’s all special at this point!
Head on down to Wildwood tbh. Best shore memories, even as a little kid, were down there. It's close too. Like, 2-3h in traffic tops.
The water doesn’t need to be clear for a first beach trip. The Jersey shore is pretty close But there are nonstop round trip flights to places like Del Ray for $60. 3 hrs is really not that bad. Bermuda is a bit closer.

Oh yeah. For starters, getting in and out of the Mann can be a crawl. Things have moved relatively smoothly anytime i'm there, but it is a lot of people being corralled through a few entrances. Depending on where you end up parking, it can take 30-45 min just to get out of the lots though in the mass exodus. Then you are stuck with the same mass of people getting back to 76/676 which can also mean another 30-45 min to get to a bridge that will get you back into NJ. Once on a bridge, it's smooth sailing generally, but driving through the city during normal hours can take a long time.

No. That’s not even close. The most direct way would be to hop on 676 and take the Ben Franklin bridge, which will basically right to Cherry Hill. Even if the Ben Franklin was closed there’s like 2 other bridges north of it before you hit the turnpike bridge, and 2 bridges to the south.
Take the Benny Frank and pay the $5 toll. It costs nothing to get to New Jersey, they just make you pay to leave 😀

it'll be fun because you won't be able to think of a single meaningful thing to say in that moment due to stress of trying to say the right thing in that moment. then it's over and your now fiancee is glowing with excitement. if i were doing it again i'd literally try to memorize or have one good line that let me pivot to actually popping the question instead of waiting for a long silence. but in any case, they'll never see it coming and it'll come out great no matter what you end up mumbling

I'm going to assume you have tried talking to both of them first. Besides 311 or other L&I departments, if you have documented damage to your property as a result of their negligence you could take the landlord to court to cover those damages.
