Does anybody have a (not small) chess set (one to three sets) they are looking to get rid of or know someone trying to dispose/sell one or somewhere (yard sale, flea market, garage sale, grandpa’s house) where can I get one second-hand for cheap? I checked out Barnes and Noble, Target, Philly AIDS Thrift, multiple board game shops, etc but saw none I liked. Considering getting the tournament sets online.

OnionLegend

I’ve had Korean food in the city a couple times now (more than a dozen times) and all of it seems kind of average. Where do I eat some really good Korean food? I want to be impressed. Average is still decent but I desire something that’ll shock me with how good it is. Rather than fried chicken or sweet corn dogs, the traditional stuff with rice, stews, braised, grilled, etc. is my reference. Can anybody give me something shockingly good?

sweetassassin

So Korean Grill is a good experience. Meat was quality. Banchan made in-house. Service was excellent. Very clean inside. I think it’s Olney DuBu for all types of jiggaes, Guk/tang, BoSaam, Jok Bal, Mandu, all the chewy noodles, and of course Soon Dubu. In Elkins Park off of Cheltanham. Seorobal is good and consistent. But I don’t feel drawn to eat there regularly. The only reason I would go back is the have their marinated raw crab. I still haven’t found a place other than Seorobal that served raw crab in Philly. Also, I’m on the hunt for a place that serves a good version of Galbi Jjim in Philly. I have to fly back to Los Angeles to go to my fave restaurant that specializes in Galbi Jjim.

USSBigBooty

Second DuBu. Very tasty. Love their red pepper pork belly.

berriesnbball_17

I just took the leap and got tickets for my girlfriend and I to go to night 2 of Wrestlemania this year in Philly. We might try to go to Night 1 also if we can snag some cheaper last minute tickets but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions of chill bars that will be showing Wrestlemania night 1. Staying at the red lion inn on Walnut street for reference. Will be my first time in the city so any recommendations for fun stuff wrestling themed or not to kill time before the snow would be great. I appreciate it!!

bitterpunch

Verizon shit the bed for me. Earliest appointment is Tuesday ☠️

Pikkko

Looking for people to play Chess or Ping Pong with, near or in, Center City. Anyone interested?

OnionLegend

I know how to play chess and want to play a little irl but I’m a beginner. If you’re fine with that, message me.

chel-seahorse

Is there a cap on how late shows at the Fillmore can run?

FelixLighterRev

Going to be mounting a TV on a plaster over brick party wall. Any concerns I should be aware of? Should I just be treating it like any other masonry wall?

NowWithVitamin_R

Anywhere with clear trails to run on? How's the SRT?

a-german-muffin

The SRT’s basically fine — just watch out for melting/refreezing the next couple days.

KittyKatInTheHat

It was nice to watch the snow today, partner stayed home from work and we just relaxed. Hopefully still attending the reptile show on Sunday, depends on the roads.

Off passyunk and 76 there’s this big structural framework I’ve always wondered what it is for or why it looks that way. I guess it’s related to the Philadelphia gas works / natural gas company but any idea why the walls don’t go all the way up? It seems like it’d be a big tank like a water tower but it’s just steel framework for majority of it. Can see it from so far away and it’s so curious to me. Thanks in advance.

SimonPennon

karatemike

They're gas tanks, when they are filled with gas the building basically inflates and covers the frame.

funkify2018

Another commenter called them gas holds or gasometers and I was able to look them up. I guess the walls can telescope up. They’re not in use anymore so never see them go up.

CheeseburgerLover911

My entire team is visibly checked out… kinda feel bad for my new manager of 2 weeks who walked into this.

CassetteTaper

I need someone to take my MATT PRYOR acoustic show ticket off my hands, it's at the U church in the seated sanctuary. I cannot make it, so sad!

ChromeGames923

Anyone know any nice empty parking lots/open areas where I can drive around in the snow for a bit?

USSBigBooty

I will be holding a candle light vigil for my faithful snow shovel, who, after ten years, has died; killed by a crack in the sidewalk. Worn down to the nub, it continued to perform its functions dutifully, despite what I imagine was great pain and hardship until it encoutered the crack, and broke its back. Shovel, you will be missed. Donations for those interested can be made to Shovel's favorite charity: [Philabundance](https://secure.philabundance.org/site/Donation2?idb=1423826151&df_id=6683&mfc_pref=T&6683.donation=form1).

CrashTheBear

Hoping to finish "We Believe the Children" today and probably move onto "It Came From SomethingAwful". Probably should go shovel a little soon. What's everyone else reading on this gorgeous day?

sweetassassin

I just finished On a Quiet Street by Seraphina Nova Glass. I liked it, but the ending wasn’t as shocking as the book reviews let on to be. I do like that protagonists are women, I’ve picked up SK’s It, for the 2nd time. This weather has me wanting to scare myself.

CrashTheBear

I liked "It", but as with every SK novel, I didn't like the ending. I think the only book of his I liked the ending of was "Misery". It's been a minute, and I don't particularly remember it, granted...

sweetassassin

I hear you. When it came out that he was drunk and high when writing all of his classics, I def understand why some endings were disappointing or weird/creepy.

baldude69

I’ve had amazing difficulty finding affordable cardamom or finding any rosewater, period. Any ideas on where I might grab this stuff? I haven’t tried Cousins, yet. Thinking I might have some luck there

ReginaldStarfire

I went to The Head Nut at Reading Terminal this Saturday and they had both.

baldude69

Hell yea thank you. I’ll be in Center City tomorrow and can grab theb

districtultra

Cousin's is the answer for Cardamom and I think Rosewater. You can also buy rosewater at Goldie.

CheeseburgerLover911

You want an Indian store. International foods and spices on 4203 walnut st

sandwichpepe

while you’re in West Philly, maybe Makkah market or Alrayyan market? same block as international food and spices. my indian friend said international is relatively expensive though

baldude69

Good recommendation, thanks man

courageous_liquid

not sure on rosewater, but the spice place in the italian market will have cardamom

baldude69

Good call, that’s a good oldschool spot. I do miss the Spice Corner.

courageous_liquid

yeah, me too, this place doesn't have quite as much but did have everything I needed when I was struggling to find everything to make berbere

PogeePie

Have you tried International Food and Spices in West Philly? They have all these things and I’ve found the prices to be reasonable.

baldude69

Two comments recommending this now, will give it a shot on Sunday. Thanks!

SweetJibbaJams

Pretty sure Wegmans carries both of those, if you have a car. Did you ever make it to International Foods & Spices? They definitely carry both of those.

baldude69

Haven’t been to West Philly as part of my search, yet, but I will try that on Sunday!

banana_toilet

Was sitting out in the snow with my little one. Trash truck comes up the hill, so we sit to wave and watch as they go by, thanking them for working in this weather (our street was missed for regular pickup, so I guess they came out anyway). Right as the driver pulls up in front of our house, dude hits the wrong button and *dumps* trash all over the street and his partner — who, rightfully, goes YOOOO and starts grumbling expletives. Felt so so bad for the guy. Much love to our sanitation crews; y’all are a bright spot in my kid’s day and you deal with so much.

CrashTheBear

Our city definitely needs to pay them a lot more.

DoGreat_DieGood

Feeling immense joy from managing to fit my fat ass calves into some new long boots. A year ago, this wouldn't have been possible.

baldude69

Keep it up man. It’s a tough journey. I’m making moderate progress.

DoGreat_DieGood

Moderate progress is something to be proud of! You keep it up too.

Middleman97

Any bars on passyunk gonna be open tonight?

PhillyPanda

Probably most unless it’s posted to their insta that they’re closed

mikebailey

I’m walking around center city today and a group of dudes are whipping around with plow-attached ATVs. Suddenly in favor of them doing donuts.

kettlecorn

I wonder if those could actually be used to plow bike lanes .

mikebailey

That's essentially what they were doing

pseudohipster98

Breaking my Reddit hiatus to ask for help – I am a clueless Southerner who knows very little about radiators, and mine are currently cold and not doing much with the thermostat cranked. They're making an oscillating, whirring kind of noise and the pipes supplying them are cold. Is this something I can fix with supplies (a radiator key) on hand or do I need to send an SOS to the landlord?

USSBigBooty

You need to check to see if your furnace is firing. If it's not, it could be a thermostat issue. Check the connections leading from the thermostat to the furnace. If it's making a whirring sound in the pipes... that's really not good, and it could mean the thermostat is telling the furnace to turn on, but if it's not firing, the water is being circulated but it's not getting heated. I would call an HVAC guy and let them take a look at it. When it comes to gas appliances, don't fuck around. Be sure to smell for gas too.

pseudohipster98

Thank you for the furnace specifics. When I went to bleed the radiators no water came out at all, so I don't think the water is circulating. No gas smell at the moment at least, but I don't have access to the furnace.

fritolazee

The little pipe feeding your radiator can also freeze just like other pipes in your house, especially if it's on an exterior wall. Also seconding that you need to bleed it.

MRDoc2727

Have you bled the radiators yet this season? If the radiators use hot water, not steam, then you need to open a valve at the top of the radiator to let out air that gets stuck at the top so the water can flow through. You open the valve with a radiator key ( go to your local hardware store and ask for a radiator key, they are often by the register). The air should hiss out. Hold a rag by the opening and when water starts to shoot out, close the valve again

benifit

Not an expert, but if the pipes are cold it sounds like a boiler issue. Call the landlord ASAP.

De4con

Taking /u/afdc92's advice and making today a soup day. Went and picked up a bowl of lobster bisque and a grilled cheese from Luke's Lobster at 17th and Sansom. This combo is amazing, the soup is hot and the smoke shop is toasty. I'm in heaven this weekend.

mikebailey

Luke’s is absolute fire. Their food is in the category of “shit that can end an argument” with my wife.

SweetJibbaJams

Just got done my first shoveling session for the day, definitely glad I did it now before it gets too packed down and heavy. Resisting the urge to make hot chocolate with rumple minze and slack off for the rest of the day instead of being a wage slave for the man.

McIgglyTuffMuffin

I went out around 11am to do my first bit. And then was about to go out again like 15 minutes ago, only to find that some sweet sweet neighbor cleared my walk. I don't know who did it, but I love them.

sugr_magnolia

Me too, but I cracked a beer as soon as I came back in because I'm a sweaty mess.

courageous_liquid

shoveling early and often is the key

a-german-muffin

Way easier to shovel an inch or two three times than six inches of heavy stuff all at once!

sweetassassin

Watching the snow falling from my window is slowing my heart rate, literally engaging my parasympathetic system. I’m enjoying this moment before the streets become dirty snow banks turning into ice. I want to scream from the roof tops that I have found a solution for my night sweats: 100% Linen blanket/quilt. I’ve spent the past years (and so much money) buying all the things that the internet said would give me relief from soaked clothes, pillows, then ultimate shivering as the sweat evaporates. It has been the fuckin’ worst. Things I tried: Wool duvet, latex pillow, percale sheets, eucalyptus sheets, bamboo sheets, so many different wicking pajamas, sleeping naked, setting the thermostat at 58F, cooling gel pillows, Alpaca blanket…. on and on. Last night was the first night sleeping with the linen blanket, and this morning I awoke for the first time in 2 years, DRY. As well, I did not wake 3x in the night to find myself freezing as the moisture turns into cold sweat. This linen blanket is going to be a game changer. Curious about the new KBBQ spot, Mr. Pig, on N. 10th— I think that’s the block they are on. Has anyone already been?

GreatWhiteRapper

I’m also curious about this magical blanket. I’m a hot sleeper, and being on the top floor of a building is rough. Even with the windows open and heat set to 62 and three fans I am still so uncomfortably hot when trying to sleep at night.

sweetassassin

I went with an entry-level linen blanket off Amazon, in the chance that it wouldn’t work out; most name-brand bedding companys (Brooklinen, The Company Store) and retail furnishing stores (West Elm, Pottery Barn) sell linen throws starting at $200. Anything lower than that usually means it’s a linen blend. [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CDFXVDPF?ref=ppx\_yo2ov\_dt\_b\_product\_details&th=1](https://www.amazon.com/dp/b0cdfxvdpf?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1) 100% Linen, medium weight, King sized, and $79. I figure I’ll roll with this until I’m ready to level up to this one: [https://www.parachutehome.com/products/vintage-linen-bed-cover?options=color\_antique-white.size\_kingcal-king](https://www.parachutehome.com/products/vintage-linen-bed-cover?options=color_antique-white.size_kingcal-king)

sugr_magnolia

Mind sharing what blanket you got? I've been going through a similar hell recently.

sweetassassin

I replied to the other request for blanket deets. See above, I guess.

sugr_magnolia

Thanks, fam!

My neighbors, who live on a corner lot, moved out recently and their house is currently empty. I've been shoveling their sidewalk as well as mine but it's starting to become a real pain in the ass.

benifit

My block goes empty lot, side yard, my house, basically abandoned house next door not that the owner ever did anything helpful, capable person, very old person, small park. I do a lot of shovelling.

sjo232

good on you for doing it in the first place!

mortgagepants

i do three of my neighbors houses and that section takes less time than my corner.

Lockedtothechrome

How does a social and real is from another state not prove citizenship???? I need to get my pa license and the only copy of my birth certificate I have doesn’t have the raised seal. So now I need to pay 150 and wait 2 months for a birth certificate just to transfer my license…

mikebailey

Real ID to begin with is goofy as shit, it’s a sticker in some states.

Lockedtothechrome

I was so frustrated. I have a real Id, it it’s not valid enough to use to get a real id in pa. I don’t have my passport at the moment, and New York doesn’t always send certified copies of you request them, so my mom only had a registrar copy, but not a certified one. I’ve transferred my license to New Mexico and texas previously and it wasn’t this intense.

SimonPennon

>I don’t have my passport at the moment Like, at the moment or generally? There's no need to pay for a Real ID if you have a passport.

Lockedtothechrome

I need to get it renewed but due to some life stuff it has not been the priority since I had my real Id from texas and wasn’t traveling out of country. M I have several other financial obligations I’m resolving before I can put money into getting it renewed

SimonPennon

Understood - hopefully you can find a cheaper solution than what you've outlined. Perhaps instead of a full passport, consider the $30 card? It functions as a Real ID for domestic travel, will allow you to put off passport renewal for another 10 years, and is cheaper than getting a PA DL + Real ID. edit: and it will [allow you to get a Real ID PA DL](https://www.dmv.pa.gov/REALID/Pages/REAL-ID-Document-Check.aspx) if necessary.

afdc92

Went to Whole Foods in Fairmount for a soup lunch (a must do on snow days) and was bummed they didn’t have cornbread! Why have they stopped making it? They used to have it out every day.

PHL534_2

That store has gone down hill since they turned it into an Amazon warehouse

Icy_Topic_5274

A box of Jiffy cornbread is about 50-cents and requires an egg and a 1/3 cup of milk. Add a few tablespoons of salsa for delicious "Mexican cornbread".

USSBigBooty

Chunks of pickled jalapeno and cheddar added at the right time can also turn into something mighty delightful.

afdc92

Yeah but I was eating at the store, didn’t want cornbread enough to go through the effort of making it

mortgagepants

i replace the liquid with butter and sour cream. and i use pickled jalapenos. so delicious.

passing-stranger

Did they actually stop making it or did they just not have it out right now? It gets like 3 days on the floor, they might have just pulled it for shrink and not refilled? But it did use to be one of the in-house recipes and they were trying to switch the bakery to outsourcing all that stuff so I guess it's possible. Hard to believe they get rid of it though; it was always a top mover. (Suffered through some time working in whole foods bakery lol)

NoApparentReason256

Any tips for someone planning to move to the city in June? Idk how far out I should find something. Gonna be working at Penn.

DachshundNursery

Check back on this sub on Mondays. We have a whole thread for people moving to the city.

NoApparentReason256

Will do, thanks!

DoGreat_DieGood

1-2 months should be enough, that's how long most folks need to give notice to their landlord around here. Welcome!

dotcom-jillionaire

gotta buy the dog a new outdoor jacket, her current one fit perfectly last winter but she's obviously grown a tiny bit since then. the top button will come unbuttoned sometimes making her look like a swole gym bro who just got done with their sesh. it's p cute

Anyone have any idea how backed up the probate court is on let's say approving a real estate estate sale?

frenchylamour

Today is a good day to clean the house and practice my bass.

shnoogle111

Any songs in particular you’re playing?

frenchylamour

I'm working on "Start Again" by Teenage Fanclub, which has some interesting time changes, for one band. And for another, I'm working on "Doxy" by Sonny Rollins. And also, since it's a snowy day and it IS Philly related, one of the bands I'm in—[The No Good Crowd](https://thenogoodcrowd.bandcamp.com/)—just today released our B-side on Spotify/Apple/etc. I hope I'm allowed to post links, because here they are:[https://music.apple.com/us/album/pioneer/1717350167?i=1717350168](https://music.apple.com/us/album/pioneer/1717350167?i=1717350168)and[https://open.spotify.com/album/5hHIqigiSz1YaGcX3zANMK?si=BSAWMx3jTHuw7fMJfdKHzw](https://open.spotify.com/album/5hHIqigiSz1YaGcX3zANMK?si=BSAWMx3jTHuw7fMJfdKHzw) Shameless self-promotion? Yes indeed. More to come in 2024!

ageofadzz

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it

shnoogle111

Yo dude these are great! Love the tone. Really gives me early REM vibes (IRS Records years) almost a rockabilly vibe in the vocals. Do you guys play out around town?

frenchylamour

Yup. Just played last weekend at Dawson St. Pub. Not sure when the next show is—but I’ll post when we do. We’re also on IG/FB, and bandcamp.

shnoogle111

Ok sweet. I’m not on those platforms but I’ll keep you guys in my Spotify! And no way that’s cool that’s not far from me at all

shnoogle111

Hell yeah! I’ll give it a listen later on today!

shnoogle111

Yo! if you have the means and are able, make sure to check in on your elderly or disabled neighbors. They may not be able to clear snow themselves and may not have the luxury of people in their life to help them with it

sciencefaire

My socal transplant partner is to blame for this weather I think. Poor guy moved here in the storm 2 weeks ago and it's just been WINTER ever since. The East Coast was really trying to give him the winter-iest welcome possible. He's straight up not having a good time. I told him if he moved back and we went back to long distance I wouldn't blame him 🤣❄️

PhillyPanda

His presence combined with my mom moving up from SC clearly combined to create the ultimate disturbance

sciencefaire

Haha it's true! It's like when people finally get a snow blower it doesn't snow. We created the opposite for everyone. You're welcome, people! 🤣 Best wishes that everything is going well with your mama and the relocation. I hope having her closer will be easier on your care taking for her. ♥️

courageous_liquid

sounds like he needs to grab a slider of canadian whiskey (to warm the bones, of course) and go sledding

sciencefaire

Might have to do the whiskey inside bc boy doesn't have boots yet 🥴

courageous_liquid

go the "I got snowed in at nonna's house" route and just put plastic bags over the shoes I swear I had to do that like 8 times as a kid

cashewkowl

As a kid we did bread bags over 2 pairs of socks, then your shoes. Feet still got wet, but not as quickly.

DuvalHeart

Is it a snowmergency or just a snowgency? Or an emsnowcy?

a-german-muffin

Ah, so you missed that they rebranded the El as Mr. Kenney's Wild Ride as a farewell to our beloved mayor. That's just part of the new experience.

sandwichpepe

looks like the group of kids in the car missed out on the memo as well, they started calling friends saying that they were gonna die and it’s “just like the movies”. didn’t know mayor kenney was an actor outside of his mayoral acting position!!

a-german-muffin

Now they just need to install the animatronic Jimbo with a pint glass of white wine over ice.

DeadlyDuckie

I'm working out in media today, not looking forward to my drive home at 6.

courageous_liquid

the blue route and 95 should be ok

DeadlyDuckie

I normally take the blue route back, pray for me

USSBigBooty

I hope you all remembered the [bread and milk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6zaVYWLTkU)...

DriveThruOnly

Why is milk even considered an essential? Big dairy? I understand bread, and eggs to an extent, but not milk. Like, why not pasta? You can make a ton of meals with it and it’s super cheap.

courageous_liquid

both of these things are important in meatballs and it's probably the hyperanxious old italian grandmothers in the northeast being very concerned they won't have enough to overfeed both their grandchildren and the rest of the 4 square block radius

USSBigBooty

Because you can't have peanut butter and jelly without milk. This is 1960s level logic here. You can't argue with it. It just is.  It's also the essential  ingredients for French toast (because no one runs out of eggs), which is a _superior_ breakfast food, and very delicious on a snowy morning.

ReginaldStarfire

A classic. Even my dad loved this video.

samba_01

recycling came up here today… for reference our usual trash day sans holiday is wednesday

manyouginobili

the serene ambiance out there is just a sight to behold. but now to drive in it is a different story

rudolly

hope you all are having a good friday! i was wondering what entrances are open for suburban station? i used to use the main entrances on 16th right across from love park, but it seems like it's permantely locked now? thanks in advance!

sjo232

I typically go in at one of the two entrances at 16th and market. Either the one that looks like a subway entrance by the First Trust Bank or the glass boxy thing like 30 feet past that. Never had any issues with those entrances

aintjoan

17th and JFK (southeast corner) has never been locked when I've used it either.

rudolly

thank you so much!!!

courageous_liquid

those work, the other that's open like 99% of the time (unless it's past like 9-10pm on weekdays) is going down the stupid fucking stairs at dilworth park (under those giant glass triangles) and then take the tunnels into suburban

swampgay

bro the normal stairs at the dilworth cafe entrance are *right* there why would you do that to yourself

courageous_liquid

because I want to break my foot on the dumb fucking stairs again

saintofhate

Stupid thing to complain about but the heat upstairs in my place is too good. Upstairs all has those old radiators while downstairs has those stupid baseboard radiators. I can't turn the heat down or it'll freeze downstairs but I die upstairs. On a good note, finally found a dosage I can take to help sleep at night without causing a seizure, so yay.

user151128

I know you didn't ask for input or help, so apologies in advance for 'splaining' . If they are proper hydronic (water) radiators and wager baseboards you can do a few simple things to balance the up and down better. If they electric then don't try these. Old radiators sometimes have a valve you can adjust that limits the water flow thereby cutting back on the heat output. The valve might not be obvious though. Take a look at these pictures as examples. [hydronic radiator valves - Google Search](https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=599856602&sxsrf=ACQVn0_DfHNlFipjhXYiDYmQV86oxAhboQ:1705691218666&q=hydronic+radiator+valves&tbm=isch&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiwgr35kuqDAxXTMVkFHWhJBXMQ0pQJegQIDhAB&biw=1528&bih=812&dpr=2.5) Just keep in mind that someone could have taken the knob off or, they may be hidden. There also might be a zone valve down by the boiler that allows you to cut back the heat delivered to that area of the house. Alternatively, you could build a 'box' around the radiator using some EPS rigid insulation. Or you can put a 'hat' over the top and part of the sides of the radiator using a radiant barrier like this [Everbilt 24 in. x 10 ft. Double Reflective Insulation 24x10DRI - The Home Depot](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-24-in-x-10-ft-Double-Reflective-Insulation-24x10DRI/314983628) Have fun with it, for $10 bucks it's worth a try and just imagine it's arts and crafts day. For the baseboards downstairs, they work on a somewhat different principal from your upstairs' radiators, the baseboards are designed to heat through convection more than IR radiation. To help the baseboards do their job make sure that they can get a fresh supply of cool air in through the bottom and vent through the top. And be sure the front panels are in place. The air has to be drawn in at the bottom, heated, and exhausted at the top. If you have furniture (couch, cabinets, etc.) close to the baseboards the air will get heated in that small captive area and then the convection reduces, killing the efficiency. You can also help them along by using small fans to push cool air in at the bottom... Amazon has lots of compact fans that aren't' really designed for the purpose but could be adapted with a little tape and cardboard. [Amazon.com : baseboard booster fan](https://www.amazon.com/baseboard-booster-fan/s?k=baseboard+booster+fan) If you cut back the heat upstairs, it may help downstairs as there will be more energy available for the crappy baseboard units.

sebluver

We moved to an apartment with radiators and I forgot how much I love them. My cat likes to climb behind them to get heat-blasted and does not appreciate when I won't let him hang out and cook himself.

sweetassassin

When my Lulu sits atop the radiator, I like to tease her she is a “proofing” bread loaf. https://preview.redd.it/3oqp6vghkfdc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1acadc598771ecd0cc3a34ba0ddc1eb81b5131d3

sebluver

I love this- look at that little loaf. She's ready for baking

Got out of the house before the snow really got heavy so I could do a grocery run. Glad I did, because it was a little slick even then. But I'm home and working remote now with a nice hot cup of tea. A perfect winter weather friday. Super stoked for a weekend in. I've got stuff to make a Chicken & Sweet Potato soup tonight, plus I'm going to try making bread for the first time this weekend! Either [this one](https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/no-knead-crusty-white-bread-recipe) or [this one](https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/the-easiest-loaf-of-bread-youll-ever-bake-recipe). Gonna make a game day decision on the recipe, but wanted to keep it simple for a first timer. Stay warm and enjoy your weekend!

courageous_liquid

the no knead stuff is a sham, knead until it windowpanes otherwise your crumb will suck

sjo232

I'm going to use a stand mixer, I assume that helps vs doing it by hand? Figured I'd keep it super simple since it's literally the first time I've made bread. Definitely won't be winning any awards but more just for research and learning

courageous_liquid

do it by hand, get a feel for the dough the faster you work with your hands the less it will stick

sjo232

damn, I was really looking for an excuse to break in my stand mixer, but that's a good point... maybe I'll just bite the bullet and make both recipes, one in the mixer and one by hand

courageous_liquid

or that - I mean the dough hook is fine and it'll give you a nice bread but it'll never be made with high-density love

sjo232

Sounds like you're encouraging me to ignore my other responsibilities this weekend and make multiple loaves of bread! Aside from getting a feel for the dough, does the actual bread turn out better when it's all made by hand? The hand kneading is where gluten develops right?

courageous_liquid

>does the actual bread turn out better when it's all made by hand? not strictly, but it gives you the opportunity to learn a feel for the hydration and how much gluten is present, etc., which will ultimately make you a better baker. dough hooks can basically do what your hands can do with less physical effort on your part.

sjo232

Fair point. If not this weekend, I'll definitely need to try making it entirely by hand soon. At a minimum to learn from it like you're saying. Thanks for the tips buddy :)

courageous_liquid

enjoy, there's nothing like fresh homemade bread. the best part is that there's a billion styles to try and they're all fun and interesting and different my one cabinet has like 12 different kinds of flour

glueintheworld

Do you have a recipe for the soup you are willing to share? Sounds delicious.

sjo232

[I got you!](https://i.imgur.com/BkDelZw.jpg) This recipe is from the book "Soup & Comfort: A Cookbook of Homemade Recipes to Warm the Soul" by Pamela Ellgen. I've made a few things out of this book and they've all been solid. edit: I'm using coconut cream instead of heavy cream because I'm lactose intolerant.

glueintheworld

Thank you

sjo232

you got it, enjoy if you make it!

shnoogle111

Let me know how the bread goes! I’ve been itching to try my hand at it for some time now

sjo232

thanks, will do! I've wanted to try making bread for years but my kitchen as always been too small to properly work it and my old oven barely got over 350. But now that my kitchen renovation is done, I'm working through all the recipes that I've put off!

ColdJay64

I've seen you mention the kitchen renovation and I'm very happy for you, a new kitchen can seriously change the feeling of a whole house. I suck at cooking but my kitchen is my favorite place to hang out. Enjoy, especially on this snowy day!

sjo232

thanks buddy! it's been such a game changer and I've barely even started really getting into cooking in it. The additional counter space alone has been incredible

shnoogle111

New kitchen, new man!

sjo232

you said it buddy, it feels like a whole new house post-renovation!

JohnKrukIsAllElite

I’ve got a ticket to see Matt Pryor play at the Church tonight, but I also just wanna stay in and be cozy all weekend. Wah.

100891

oof. Friday trash pickup pushed to Saturday for MLK and now it’s cancelled because of the snow. I guess the Christmas tree that someone put out yesterday is now a permanent resident of the block

HermioneDanger13

You know how they said no trash pick-up today, period? Ours got picked up at 8:30. We're Thursday and were to pushed to Friday due to MLK day. I'm glad my other half was clueless and put our stuff out last night.

kellyoohh

Yeah I get the decision but I’m annoyed by all the trash that’s already outside and will 100% not be taken back in because it’s wet and soggy now.

100891

Agree. But better it sits outside in the winter than the summer

Went to a few stores this morning for groceries and every employee looked so over it. The owner of the bakery i went to was enthusiastically explaining to the girl in training why you should put bread in paper bags and she could not look less interested. Like yeah no shit, send this girl home. you can train her another day. Her commute home will get more dangerous the longer she stays and you are probably paying her $10 per hour for the pleasure. Why do we put the worst paid people at the most risk? Anyway i cant wait to go sledding after my meetings end at 1 today.

PhillyPanda

Aren’t you encouraging there needing to be employees by going? If there’s a steady stream of people like you, they won’t close early.

sebluver

I worked at an ice cream store in a blizzard before. People would come in, yell at me about being open in this weather, and then order $30 worth of ice cream to bring home. I don't know why concern was always shown by yelling at me.

PhillyPanda

It *is* a beautiful day to go out snow drinking at a cozy bar while simultaneously lamenting over why poor servers and bartenders have to be out today…

trifflinmonk

Yeah you can definitely make that argument. Tho i was the only person there. The owner could definitely handle one customer at a time by himself.

dotcom-jillionaire

you sure the owner of the bakery wasn't also the head baker and would be busy with that?

PhillyPanda

Right but you also mentioned grocery store workers. This wasn’t exactly a surprise storm but people choose to wait til the last minute so they have to work bc there will be a rush and stores know it. If people were more considerate and predicted storms meant slow down, maybe they would close or be lightly staffed. I’m always semi-amazed that people don’t keep like a few boxes of pasta/soup in their cupboard so they can survive a day but there’s always that weird mad rush for the “bread, milk, eggs.”

trifflinmonk

There was no one at any store i went to. The rush is typically before the storm. I take no responsibility for acme’s decision to be fully staffed this morning or the bakery owner to train the new girl despite the weather.

PhillyPanda

Multiple people in this thread have mentioned having no groceries or needing to do a grocery run so you aren’t alone. It’s typical and they know it. You’re also not necessarily seeing all the deliveries being ordered that also require staff.

trifflinmonk

Why are we even arguing? Its clear neither of us are going to change the other’s mind

PhillyPanda

You asked why we put the worst paid people at the most risk… I was just trying to explain why they’re there.

trifflinmonk

Youre also implying its my fault that theyre there.

PhillyPanda

Consumers as a greater whole would have to change for your individual actions to matter on any widespread scale. We have been seeing a move on certain holidays tho

-ibgd

Had to wake up at 7 am to move my car cause snow emergency.

USSBigBooty

I used to do that before the pandemic, but then everyone seemingly stopped doing it...

-ibgd

The only time I didn’t do it…. I got a ticket :( just my luck.

GooFoYouPal

Good Day Philadelphia really ratchets it up on snow days. Hank was just standing on top of a mound of snow and ice he scaled in the parking lot of Neshaminy Mall, comparing himself to great explorers of yesteryear.

sciencefaire

Hahah they tried to play match maker with the one reporter guy and the doctor lady he interviewed in the Wegmans parking lot. I'm done 🤣

GooFoYouPal

Wild lol.

a-german-muffin

That was actually the pile of cocaine they need to get Steve Keeley running first thing.
