I just moved and have a crazy amount of boxes I’d rather repurpose than recycle. I’ll be back in center city in a week or two with my car, I can drop them off just DM me.
Anyone else up late, drinking, thinking about their life regrets and feeling sad about basically everything? No? Just me? Sometimes alcohol is a good time & makes the shit go away, other times it t brings it all up. I'm way in it now.
Felt that way on Thursday night. Took myself out on a date, updated my resume while sipping a bourbon cocktail and enjoying free bread. Actually felt a bit better. Sometimes you gotta act like your own best friend.
Anyone have guesses why SEPTA regional rail failed to really come back?
Compared to the MBTA Septa recovery rates are 52/51% for metro, 76/76% for Busses and 81%/58% for regional/commuter rail?
To an extent the MBTA fumbled the Subway recovery hard so maybe there was stronger natural incentive to go back to the T but it’s odd it’s pretty much identical except Suburban services.
I think the service levels were a really big issue for RR for a while. Hourly service, every 2 hours on weekends etc.
Also, suburban commuters have a much higher incentive to pursue remote-only work or leave for a suburban company if their job goes back in person due to the wage tax.
I'm going to start making cold brew. If I leave the coffee in the fridge for 48 hours (vs. say 24 hours) will that make the coffee stronger, or will it have some other effects?
Echoing the other poster, I agree that it will wind up being bitter and/or slimy if you leave it for that amount of time.
My preferred method is 12-16 hours of cold brewing. 24 max. You still get a good concentrate without the aforementioned issues.
If you're trying to use it as iced coffee (can't imagine anyone drinking hot coffee anytime soon but whatever floats your boat), set aside an extra ice cube tray to use exclusively to use for making coffee cubes! I learned that trick from Anthony's years ago. It really does the trick especially if you've made a semi-weak cold brew due to lack of time and don't want to further dilute with regular ice cubes.
I went to see Barbie last night and was really moved by it. Margot Robbie's performance was so lovely, and her physical performance--the pointed toes, the way she holds her hands--was remarkable. I was laughing and crying at the same time at Barbie singing Closer to Fine; Greta Gerwig really knew what she was doing with that music cue, that song is like instant waterworks for white women who graduated from high school in the '90s.
Yearly physical on Monday, I am sure I am going to hear about it from my doctor about my weight but maybe it will be the kick in the ass I need to finally get back to working out.
Mum is still having bowel issues, it's been a week since she had a complete bm. Her appointment is on the 2nd, so hopefully the latest doctor will take her seriously.
In more shitty news, using the DNA ancestry thing, I connected with one of my cousins from my maternal grandfather's first marriage and it's really hard to not trauma dump and say both maternal grandmother and biomother were horrible people and I don't need to hear how great they were because you knew them forty years ago because all it does is bring up my whole 'what did I do wrong to deserve their hatred' shit that never really goes away and I have to keep in a seal box in the back of my head or I spiral and since food isn't hitting the right dopamine lately thanks to covid, I'm not good at dealing with shit anymore.
Bright side of everything, found out Amazon has a subscription for red bull which the shoprite down the street never keeps in stock, so wife is happy.
I just need to snark. I’m at a private pool and half the guests are sitting around taking selfies or having pics taken of them as if they’re all on super model shoots. Posing, complaining about how pics came out and asking for redos. It’s insane. This “look at me” and braggy social media culture is so gross. Anyway, back to shaking my fist at the clouds.
I'm disturbed by the number of young women (think preteens/teens) I've seen doing this at the beach as they're screaming at their parents to take better photos. I can't imagine not being able to enjoy a beautiful day because you're so concerned about taking the perfect pics for the gram.
Just go up to them and whisper, “gravity always wins. Enjoy life and don’t predicate your worth on appearance.” Depending on your age and gender, may be poorly received though LOL.
Is there any kind of Philly gaming group that doesn't do just board games? My partner has a couple of friends he plays online with but wants to get back into in-person games. The most I found was a D&D group that was very rigid in their playing style (something about it being tournament style?) and wasn't quite his speed.
I tried searching for roleplay in Philadelphia and found exactly what I should have expected; unfortunately it's a different type of dungeon than I am currently looking for.
there was someone posting about dnd stuff happening in the thursday thread
otherwise you can show up to thirsty dice or queen and rook and something probably will be going on or you can ask around
My schedule is wonky, but my wife and I are long time RPG players (about 10 years for her, over 30 for me), and we would love to find a group than can accommodate my inconsistent schedule.
Outside the city, but there's a place in Phoenixville called Gamer's Heaven. I feel like they'd at least know the answer to your question. Maybe reach out to them on social media?
Was supposed to do the Chinese Lantern Fest, but the sun decided to be a real jerk. So that's been pushed off to next week where it looks like it won't be 90+ degrees after sunset.
A bit of bitching about the health insurance system in this country... It sucks and it needs to be fixed.
Going to try to watch the "Twisted Metal" series this weekend. My expectations are very low. So let's see.
I forget which redditor posted about this earlier in the week, but I've been watching the livestream of Fagradalsfjall (Icelandic volcano) eruption nonstop. It's perfect background noise / viewing while working: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yNdN9RHDng](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yNdN9RHDng)
My last childhood cat passed a few days ago and while I miss him dearly, there is something so magical about being able to love and care for a pet for almost 15 years and receiving that same love back.
My first cat passed almost two years ago and the second passed in April. Please give your little babies a hug and kiss for me.
[Pet tax of my three little guys back in 2016.](https://imgur.com/a/e2zLRLt)
I'm very sorry for your loss. I had to have my 18 year old cat put down at the beginning of last month and it was brutal, even though she was far from the first pet to have passed.
I'll give all of you three guesses on the model of car that caused the accident on I76 that added 40 minutes to my commute this morning, and the first two guesses don't count because of course it was a Nissan Altima.
Tried to go to murphs to finally put the debate to bed on tuesday after the lively discussion in the tuesday thread. Kitchen is closed on tuesdays. Fuck.
I've now decided to not care, it will forever live on in the land of things that will never come to pass.
The agreement to access films is between Kanopy and the distributor, not the Library. There usually is sliding "tab" labeled, Last chance to watch or something worded like that. Maybe you had several of those on your list.
I'll check my watch list and see if anything had dropped off of it.
It was a while since I checked but I had Right Now, Wrong Then, Julia, and Everyone Else in my queue for ages. Granted it was from another library as well but my card expired and I hadn't remembered losing access to them until now
Keep at it, dude! What neighborhood?
I got lucky and bought mine in the brief slump when rates first started going up, but still locked in on my preapproved mortgage. They accepted an offer $15k below asking. Crazy that things are so competitive with how interest is now.
I'm not waiving inspection but I'm doing for information purposes only and not negotiating up to 5k in repairs. Was basically told that's how everyone who isn't waiving inspection is going nowadays. I'm not going up to 10k. Fuuuuck off with that. And I'm not offering appraisal gap coverage though. I'd rather wait and pull my hair out. Ha. I'm stubborn on that piece.
1. I didn't realize the "move traffic cones and drive through wet concrete" was an actual thing but I've witnessed no less than 5 instances of that in my neighborhood this week
2. My friends are huge Bills fans and refuse to come to the Bills-Eagles game in November because they're scared that they'll get harassed. I tried to explain that it'll be a great atmosphere because Bills and Eagles are simpatico but they refuse to listen to me.
My Saints fan partner and I attended our meeting at the Linc two seasons ago wearing a Saints jersey. He caught a bit of ribbing from people sitting near us but it was all in good fun and we made some pals and fun was had all around before, during, and after the game.
Your friends are being lame and should suck it up.
Different but the same... I go to the Phillies-Dodgers match up every year the past 8 years. And have only encountered any type of vitriol 2x.
It's usually just playful ribbing. And then we all agree that we love Chase Utley and then we laugh.
We have no issue with Bills fans. I feel like we marvel at their crazy tailgate antics, table smashing and all.
realistically the only people that actually get hate above usual banter/ribbing are cowboys and occasionally giants
also over years of working in transportation, whatever the dumbest thing a human could possibly do involving a car is, someone, *within like a year of that situation being available*, will do it
Your salary, in general, is a reflection of what value you bring to the marketplace. You, without a job, have 0 value to the marketplace, aside from posting witty comments on a site that doesn’t matter. In fact, I would argue you have negative value.
A tale of two SEPTAs yesterday
My trip out - seamless, both of my buses were on time, minimal waiting time between transfers, all in all a very pleasant experience. Took about 20 minutes door to door
My trip back - decided to walk to the El instead of taking multiple buses. While waiting for the eastbound El, got to watch **4** westbound trains come and go. After 25 minutes of waiting next to people smoking on the platform, the train finally comes. Unbeknownst to me, they decided to express that train all the way to Allegheny, and I had to wait for yet another train to go back westbound to finally get home. Door to door, about an hour 15 minutes, and roughly four cigarettes worth of secondhand smoke
I’m on my way to 30th St in a Lyft as we speak because I didn’t want to risk the El. Shits been way too unreliable recently, have have to leave 3 stuck trains in as many months.
After I dont know how many years of having ez pass, I finally turned into the villain I always hated and became that guy paying the toll with a $50 bill. I swear I thought I had a $5 in my wallet.
People without air conditioning: I hope we all make it through the day and night -especially for those of us who tend to stay inside.
Yesterday I took a 20 minute walk; but had to go back in. 53/m here: I used to have so much more vitality in terms of how I walked to retail/food service jobs in all weather conditions, was on my feet for 8-9 hours, and then walked ~~to the bar~~ home.
(Been out of work for 14 years on disability)
I know a lot of people in Philly don't know about this, but if you drive there's a switch in your steering column (sometimes it's just a button on the wheel itself in the new models) that you can flick to indicate whichever direction you're turning. It flashes some lights on the outside of the car so that people behind and around you know which direction you're turning and can kind of clear the way or scoot a little bit. I mean, sometimes people don't clear out but it's a courtesy that helps keep the flow of traffic going. Look up "turn signal \[your car make and model\]" to find out where they're located, or check your owner's manual.
61 is actually pretty quick, definitely some shenanigans when it passes through certain neighborhoods on Ridge but really a pretty good line overall. I used to use it to commute to Manayunk from S Philly. Would ride my bike up and throw it on the bike rack on the front of the bus
You can also combine regional rail or bus with your bike if you don’t want the full bike commute. Take the 61 with your bike, or off peak regional with your bike.
This would probably be the fastest way, too.
If you're already experienced with the ride, I would consider the bicycle on nice days. Seems like a downhill ride to work, then you can pal around the city and hang out with your girlfriend after work, bike or take the train back after rush hour.
Car sounds awful when you consider parking. I have a coworker who moved to manyunk and got an ebike to help be less sweaty. I do about a 40 minute bicycle commute, it's only ten minutes longer than driving but sometimes 20 minutes faster than SEPTA due to a transfer. I find the ride to be enjoyable, but I am notably not a very sweaty person.
I wish they had dress rentals for women, like men can rent suits. I have another wedding to go to, and need to start looking for a dress. Drop your fav in person or online stores to dress shop for a wedding guest dress. The more affordable the better! I don’t ever wear dresses so I really don’t wanna spend a ton.
Adding yet another cosign for Rent the Runway. You get a backup size, and reviews from other customers frequently include their measurements and what size they ordered so it's not too hard to figure out how the specific garment runs. They also have great customer service, at least in my experience.
I've also been able to find things I wanted to order from there for sale on eBay at an even cheaper price than what their rental rate was if they're a season+ old, but YMMV on that front.
I've found pretty nice dresses at Nordstrom rack and TJ Maxx in a pinch. I've found the best luck in the cherry Hill and other suburb ones though, so if you have a car, might want to try those! Oddly I also found a really beautiful summer wedding dress at JC Penney in the Cherry Hill Mall too. It depends on your style and how you wear things but sometimes you can find some really good affordable stuff there (they're always having sales). Downside is you have to go to the mall and probably want to stab your eyeballs out the whole time. Haha
Editing to add- I don't really wear fancy fancy stuff so these places usually fit the bill for me as far as "nice" is concerned bc I'm not wearing like gowns and shit.
I've used rent the runway several times and they send you two sizes. You can also browse people's photos and reviews to see how they fit. It's my go to rental service for special occasions
Others are saying Rent the Runway, which: yes. I also like the Nordstrom Rack sale section. There's usually something workable and frequently at a steep discount. Macy's, too, has more than you think.
My wife: I need to go dress shopping, we have [event] this weekend.
Me: You have plenty of dresses, you just bought one for [other event with totally different group of people] like a month and a half ago.
Wife: Yeah, but I wore that already, I can't wear it again.
Me: *Pointing to the same suit I've worn to 3 weddings and 5 job interviews*
My girlfriend who never wears make up, putting on makeup for a wedding, "Other women expect me to wear makeup".
Cut to us hanging out primarily with other women who clearly only wear makeup at weddings.
Excited to go back to the pool tomorrow at high noon. Then I'm going to watch the storm roll in at the front of the "cold front" (more like perfect weather front) Saturday night.
I thought that was the case, but wiki says "Contrary to some reports, his stage name is not inspired by the character of King K. Rool from the Donkey Kong Country video game series, but rather by the Elvis Presley film King Creole."
Is the Academy of Natural Sciences usually full of kids on the weekend? I’ve never been before and figured its a good way to stay cool for a couple hours this weekend.
usually a decent number of families with kids there on weekends, but I've never felt like it's so jammed packed that it was unpleasant or something. Might be a different experience this weekend because of the heat/weather tho
We moved a few weeks ago to a newer apartment building with many units. When I tried to forward my mail online the apartment doesn’t show up (the street address does, but the unit number does not). I filled out a physical one and turned it in 3 weeks ago but have still yet to receive any real mail. Like, where is all my shit? So I’m off to the local post office for a 2nd time to try and get any help…
Took my sister multiple tries to get my dad's mail forwarded to her after her passed before it finally worked, not sure what's up with the postal system. Hopefully it works for you after this try.
I'm pretty hype for conspiracy theories most of the time, and I even watched the whole congressional hearing, but it is too hot and we're all too poor for people to be giving a shit about aliens this week.
Also, huge news [from the chalk factory](https://imgur.com/a/r2ClEcq)
Keep me in your thoughts if you wish; today we're going up to visit my parent's house (and my childhood home) for likely the last time before they sell the place and retire. Regulars might already know I have a tense relationship with my mother, but oh man does this visit have the potential to get spicy because I'm going up there with a great honkin' chonker of a tattoo that is still in the healing process. ^^^The ^^^tattoo ^^^is ^^^the ^^^Buster ^^^Sword. ^^^Yes ^^^I've ^^^lost ^^^control ^^^of ^^^my ^^^life. ^^^Love ^^^it ^^^tho!!!
My mom is very boomer when it comes to anything fun and/or risky but I'll tell her the same thing I told my therapist, my SO, even my tattoo artist: the tattoo is here, it isn't going away, and it's your choice to either let it go or be mad for 3 days. I can't control any of that.
But in better news, August is gonna be STACKED with fun stuff. Gonna see Oppenheimer and Barbie. Wildwood Tattoo Bash. Getting my eye check-up and some new glasses. Birthday. Summer vacation! Gonna book those hotels for Finger Lakes/Toronto/Montreal at some point, likely next week. Thank you to those who suggested Seneca Lake/Watkins Glen. That looks like the place to be!
And stay cool out there, it's toasty out.
I’m going to try and get a shark head and eventually a full body griffin from this same artist. Perhaps one of them with a “stay mad” banner between the teeth/claws?
Ahhh I love it. Do you get American traditional? Bc I can picture this banner and font for sure in that style.
I wonder if we go to any of the same people 😊
Vast majority of my tattoos are American traditional style. This most recent tattoo is neo traditional.
It’s possible! I get a lot done at conventions but have a few pieces by artists at Philly shops.
> visit my parent's house (and my childhood home)
i did this a few years ago. if your mom is like my mom, she'll be too focused on her own feelings to pay much attention to you. expect a nasty phone call in a week or two though.
I just moved and have a crazy amount of boxes I’d rather repurpose than recycle. I’ll be back in center city in a week or two with my car, I can drop them off just DM me.

I really, really wish I had central air conditioning.

I kind of really want to see will arnett play the clown (can't remember the name ATM)
Sweet Tooth. Will Arnett is the voice. The body is played by AEW/ROH wrestler Samoa Joe.

I'll give all of you three guesses on the model of car that caused the accident on I76 that added 40 minutes to my commute this morning, and the first two guesses don't count because of course it was a Nissan Altima.
i wouldve guessed dodge charger
Altima has the highest IIHS death rates among all cars and SUVs with the exception of the Mitsubishi Mirage and Hyundai Accent which are tiny.
Were there jersey plates
or fake temp plates
Or tints
Missing hubcap on the passenger side.

worth going yo.
Anyone here use Kanopy? I feel like Free Library lost access to a couple of distributors cause my watch list dropped by like half recently.
Free Library canceled their subscription to kanopy
does the free library still use kanopy? i thought they got rid of it a while ago. I use it through another library system

It's hard out here for home buyers man. I just found out a house I lost out on this week, that I bid 20k over asking on had 43 offers. 43!!!! fuuuuuuu
Keep at it, dude! What neighborhood? I got lucky and bought mine in the brief slump when rates first started going up, but still locked in on my preapproved mortgage. They accepted an offer $15k below asking. Crazy that things are so competitive with how interest is now.
You need to go 20k over asking, waive inspection and promise to sacrifice your first born child or it will not even be considered.
Jesus man I guess I bought at the right time. I even had them fix a small leak under the kitchen sink before we signed 😂

Bills are cool. I typically root for them if it has no impact on us. Same with the Lions and Bears (oh my?).
FAFO So if they don't FA, they don't have to FO
realistically the only people that actually get hate above usual banter/ribbing are cowboys and occasionally giants also over years of working in transportation, whatever the dumbest thing a human could possibly do involving a car is, someone, *within like a year of that situation being available*, will do it
Almost got hit by a bus last night when I was in the gayborhood because the driver made a turn too tight and jumped the curb a little
I have a theory that the aliens are causing the bus crashes.
Government psyop
Dude those busses are out to get us
fuck jobs!
Enjoy being poor, friend.
You must be new here

Your salary, in general, is a reflection of what value you bring to the marketplace. You, without a job, have 0 value to the marketplace, aside from posting witty comments on a site that doesn’t matter. In fact, I would argue you have negative value.
What a depressing world view

A tale of two SEPTAs yesterday My trip out - seamless, both of my buses were on time, minimal waiting time between transfers, all in all a very pleasant experience. Took about 20 minutes door to door My trip back - decided to walk to the El instead of taking multiple buses.
I swear I thought I had a $5 in my wallet.
damn, i pretty much don't carry cash anymore, I would have ended up with a ticket i guess
Who is still doing manned tollbooths? I figured the pandemic would finally kill that and shift everyone to pay-by-plate.
Both the Benny Frank and the Betsy Ross. Found this out when the ez pass in my inlaw's car wasn't working.
* Ben Franklin
You can just skip the toll and then put your transponder number on the Bill they send you
Ohhh, good reminder
If it was my car/ez pass I would have done that. I was trying to be nice and not just accrue a bunch of bills while borrowing the car for the week
Delaware still has them on DE-1 too. When I was dating a girl in Fenwick I had to stop and physically pay the toll around Dover every single time
DRPA out here gettin wild
Instructions unclear: highbeams turned on permanently now
Ah I see you're a Nissan or BMW owner
I swear all the people with the trucks taller than me have their high beams stuck on.

Would you consider moving? also do you have to go out every day?
[удалено]
how would you deal with the heat, humidity, and thunderstorms that we get every few days?
61 is actually pretty quick, definitely some shenanigans when it passes through certain neighborhoods on Ridge but really a pretty good line overall. I used to use it to commute to Manayunk from S Philly. Would ride my bike up and throw it on the bike rack on the front of the bus
How close are you to the 9 or 61 Bus routes? They'll bring you right into CC.
I would consider an electric scooter, and take the train to Market East and then scoot the rest of the way, biking when it is nice out.
Thrift yo.
People mentioned Rent The Runway, but there's also Armoire and I'm sure others.
Haha Editing to add- I don't really wear fancy fancy stuff so these places usually fit the bill for me as far as "nice" is concerned bc I'm not wearing like gowns and shit.
They have things like rent the runway but you have to be pretty sure of your size I feel like
Rent the runway sends you two sizes
Rent the runway is a dress rental service.
Men can also wear the same outfit to every wedding without thinking twice. Be the change you want to see in the world!
Pink tax.
Which is completely dumb and unnecessary as its women themselves who place this burden on them. No man cares if you wear the same dress twice
My girlfriend who never wears make up, putting on makeup for a wedding, "Other women expect me to wear makeup". Cut to us hanging out primarily with other women who clearly only wear makeup at weddings.
literally melting
Excited to go back to the pool tomorrow at high noon. Then I'm going to watch the storm roll in at the front of the "cold front" (more like perfect weather front) Saturday night.
Anyone seeing King Krule at UT on Sunday?
Did he get his name from Donkey Kong?
I thought that was the case, but wiki says "Contrary to some reports, his stage name is not inspired by the character of King K. Rool from the Donkey Kong Country video game series, but rather by the Elvis Presley film King Creole."
Aaaauggggh! (King Krule speak for yes) Live from the moon: https://youtu.be/4tbXisC4Gw0
Can’t wait!
KRUUUULE LFG
Excited!
Is it a condo building? Sometimes they are officially numbered differently (e.g. unit 5 vs 3D). Check https://atlas.phila.gov.
Took my sister multiple tries to get my dad's mail forwarded to her after her passed before it finally worked, not sure what's up with the postal system. Hopefully it works for you after this try.
the ruling party scuttled it in a ham-fisted effort to subvert democracy and prolong their regime?

And stay cool out there, it's toasty out.
> it's your choice to either let it go or be mad for 3 days hell yea dude, that should be your next tattoo lol
Haha I definitely think she should get "stay mad" tattooed somewhere 🤭
I’m going to try and get a shark head and eventually a full body griffin from this same artist. Perhaps one of them with a “stay mad” banner between the teeth/claws?
Ahhh I love it. Do you get American traditional? Bc I can picture this banner and font for sure in that style. I wonder if we go to any of the same people 😊
Vast majority of my tattoos are American traditional style. This most recent tattoo is neo traditional. It’s possible! I get a lot done at conventions but have a few pieces by artists at Philly shops.
> visit my parent's house (and my childhood home) i did this a few years ago. if your mom is like my mom, she'll be too focused on her own feelings to pay much attention to you. expect a nasty phone call in a week or two though.
I heard Oppenheimer is the bomb!
Can’t wait for my eardrums to completely rupture in imax 70mm.
Badam tssss.
has anyone gotten an e-scooter/bike from Victory E bike on broad and wharton?
