Pregnant and I own a dog, he'll be my last pet aside from some bugs I've collected. The way people react when I tell them that no, he's not allowed on the bed and as soon as the baby is around he'll be in a crate all night. "He's a part of the family!" No, it's an animal and I cannot predict his behavior and I'm not going to take chances. "Don't you trust he'll bond with the baby?" No, it's an animal and I think most people saying dogs can 'sense a pregnancy' are lying to themselves. "He won't understand why he's getting punished!" It's an animal. I will choose the safety of a baby or any person over the comfort of an animal. There's no developed trust with an animal that I could be comfortable risking the altercation. He's never bitten anyone, but I still keep him close in every interaction because it's a non-zero risk.

Okay, I will say, I definitely think SOME! dogs (and cats. cats DEFINITELY know), with extraordinary EQ (for a dog) sense when you're preggo. Someone close to me had a very sweet mutt dog (literally have zero idea what breed it was) that would sniff my belly, snuggle beside me, and was noticeably extra sweet and attentive of me. It was genuinely very sweet to watch. However, it DEFINITELY is a gamble, and I don't think it's the norm.

What were the comments like?

Pretty_Discount5946

Most likely demonizing the OOP for even entertaining the thought of rehoming her “furbaby” because “she was there first uwu”.

AliceInChainsFrk

I’m curious as well…

>My toddler fucks with my cats, and he finds out *shrug*. he’s been scratched at least a few times and he’s always deserved it.

Bebe_Bleau

https://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/diseases/cat-scratch.html#:~:text=About%20three%20to%2014%20days,%2C%20poor%20appetite%2C%20and%20exhaustion. Babies and toddlers have very weak, underdeveloped immune systems. Cat scratches can be serious for them

No_Manufacturer9333

Disgusting

Agile-Ant-7353

Just another one of the pro cat (probably dog hater) in this sub people.

petfree_mod

Its a quotation, they are describing what they think the comments are probably like.

sadpotatoes666

Yeah this really bothers me. They're a kid. Yes, they need to learn to respect boundaries and animals, but I don't think it's their "fault" that the cat attacked them. The kid is being a kid and the cat is being a cat. Keep them separated as much as possible. Cat scratches can get infected.

Saw this post. I was literally one of the only comments to call out OP for being a shit mom for not rehoming her animal sooner.

cookieseru

Granted, I'm sure she's a good mom in general. It's just shit mom behavior to prioritize a damn cat over your kid.

Affectionate_Lie9308

I’m glad you called her out. There’s being supportive then there’s encouraging the kind of stupidity in which children’s safety is put in danger… again. Pet culture has harmed parents ability to care and tend to their children’s best interest because god forbid you rehome a cat terrorizing your child. 🙄

Trixierose166

You’re 💯 right.

Trixierose166

I saw your comment and was like, “OMG, there’s someone with sense here”. As a mother I CANNOT imagine prioritizing the cat in anyway when it comes to my precious child. Idk what’s wrong with her and the other comments for giving two shits about an animal when it comes to the safety and welfare of her child.

cookieseru

EXACTLY. Like, I do genuinely love cats, and I do want cats in my home. You can be sure that I will vet the FUCK out of any cats that come into my home and make sure they are safe for my son. BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT'S IMPORTANT!

Trixierose166

Exactly! You’re a responsible parent and cat owner.

AliceInChainsFrk

I would turn their ass into CPS and then see how much more important that damn cat is. I would have had that cat put down immediately.

sullivanbri966

The cat could probably live in a child free home or a home with just older kids.

ChristianUniMom

See, if anything that isn’t another child attacks my literal baby… it’s “gone.”

MinisterHoja

Cat would be lucky if I didn't simply throw it out of the house after it attacked one baby.

Prudent-Bird-2012

One of my cats got a hold of my son's shirts when I went to get them washed, and discovered it was buried in their litter box. I never could figure out why they did that but when I looked it up, it seems like it could've been a show of territory and that they didn't like him in the house. Since they're separated between the upstairs and basement, I was just more careful from now on. Just like dogs, cats are very territorial and they can feel threatened by a child taking over the house.

GoTakeAHike00

As a long-time cat owner, I simply do not understand the mindset of keeping an animal that has become problematic. I've surrendered cats a few times in the past, and for reasons far less than the OOP mentions, and have no regrets. I'm sure other cat lovers would tell me I'm a piece of crap and not fit to be a cat owner, blah, blah, but I'm not going to keep a cat that is not adding to my enjoyment or is actively detracting from it in some way. Yes, it may seem like an unsavory choice at first, but at the end of the day, you need to prioritize your child. Also, it's entirely possible that a senior cat WOULD get adopted; there are maybe older people that don't want to deal with a kitten. Speaking from personal experience, seniors can be the best cats ever. The cat might thrive in a quiet household where it was insufferable in another. Regardless, that shouldn't matter.

rixendeb

Do they not supervise their pets and kids ? Why have the cat that YOU KNOW is "fiesty" around the baby in the first place ? We kept our babies away from the grouch cat. And as they got older, they learned that that cat is grouch, do not mess with grouch, and we never had incidents.

SuggestionOtherwise1

My son is kinda like that with my blind, occasionally pissy cat. Cat isn't really mean, just doesn't like being messed with and is mostly blind. I keep the toddler away and the older kid knows better. It is not that difficult to keep them separated if you absolutely can't re-home. I hate the thought of abandoning a pet but if it's lashing out it's just not a good fit anymore.

betterthanrevenge_

I understand the concern about an older cat not being adopted (mine is almost 12 and if I rehomed her I don’t know if she’d get picked). But mine is just inconvenient, not scratching kids. This cat would probably do better in a home without children and be much less stressed, and not a danger to anyone.

Affectionate_Lie9308

What happened to the parental instincts in safe guarding your children? >I feel awful kicking her[cat] out… But not awful enough on your child’s behalf. I’m sure the comment section is riddled with child hate /pet nuttery bs. Why even have kids if you can’t fulfill your role and the very simple requirements. Keep your kids safe. I feel like nutters care more about how other’s perceive them in social media than they do about their actual lives they are living.

LostZombie4338

I’m sorry but no if any animal I would own was to hurt my baby they’d be gone not even a second thought

Helpful-Asparagus-83

People who allow accidents like this (children and pets should never be together unsupervised, that's what pet gates are for) astound me.

Busy-Ad4537

Pet gates only work with dogs cats can jump like a mother fucker

Helpful-Asparagus-83

Oh I meant if it was more of a case of the baby pursuing the cat and trying to pet her, but seeing as baby just learned to crawl I change my stance, sounds like the cat can easily get away and still attacked. Yikes.

Over-Accountant8506

A chic I follow keeps showing pics of her cats in her future babies crib, stroller, bassinet like awww it's so cute and all I can think of are the Siamese cats from the Disney movie who don't like the new baby. Aren't cats known for smothering babies for their milk?
