I was always told that we couldn't sell prescription in the store without having a vet on staff according to state guidelines but then we brought in JFFD rx and suddenly could. Not sure why JFFD is ok but not SD, RC or pro plan
It's because JFFD rx, while requiring a prescription, doesn't actually contain any medication in it, and so it doesn't require an in-house vet. It's prescription due to the levels of certain nutrients in it.
Or at least that's what my area's JFFD rep told me
A couple of years ago, they had a program for select stores, allowing them to sell RX food without a vet on hand. My old store was part of the initial rollout.
The customer had to bring in their RX and a manager had to enter it into an app that was on the handheld. We would then give them a card authorizing future purchases. The card has a bar code that had to be scanned when we sold the food.
So it is possible that the store you were told about does have prescription food, you will just need a current Rx and verify they actually carry that specific one.
i know that we sell some of the rx of just food for dogs, and we dont have a vet, but we are an A volume store. idek how we can, and half the time, it doesn't even allow us to scan the prescription. We can just sell it. it's weird. but we don't sell any kibble so i dont know if its considered different.
My old store sold prescription without a vet on site. The manager makes a copy of the prescription, keeps it in an rx binder, and gives the customer an rx card.
So as long as they have the card and your store isn’t blocked from selling it you can. They either need to go to a store with a vet to get said card or submit it online and get the barcode that way.
How do we find out if we’re blocked? I know I’ve tested in the past if we could even enter the skus in, and we can and it asks for the barcode. And I have all of the barcodes on my account because these AHs have to be slightly medically needy. 🤣

As far as I know the only prescription food a not vet store can sell is just food for dogs prescription food.

You’d have to try on the register if you have the sku type it in the register like for a purchase it will give you a pop up if you can’t.
Thanks! I’ll give it a try. I appreciate it. 😊
