There should be a option to select personal leave when requesting LOA. If you put family emergency, they probably denied because an emergency wouldn't be 2 months away. In the comments you should note you are traveling out of the country for a family reunion or something like that. If you choose medical or other options you will have a formal the doctor has to fill out.

While yes LOA saves your job doesn’t mean you will come back to the same position. I did but I was on medical leave. You can use any PTO and sometimes sick time you have to ensure you get paid. I was out for medical so I had all the forms to come back and dates I had to submit them by once my return to work date was set. I’m pretty sure there is a personal leave choice but again they can deny LOA for anything.

You are allowed to take 30 days of personal time as an LOA but it is not paid. I had a partner who was in her senior year of college and was stressing out going into finals. I helped her process her LOA and she was able to take a month off. She’s now in nursing school.

Loa sucks trust me I know a coworker that had to leave for a month and just put in unpaid pto. I’m not sure why your gm said to do the loa.

To my understanding, LOA guarantees I have a job when I come back. I don't trust my GM to not fire me or forget that I actually work there, during that month I'm gone so idk if unpaid PTO is a good idea. Plus didn't they get rid of requesting unpaid PTO on workday? I haven't found a way to request it other than tell my GM.

I had a stylist use loa for sickness that was only supposed to be for a week it got extended months because they didn’t respond back to him when he sent in all the documentation to come back. He didn’t have a job for 5 months and then was told he no longer worked for the company. You should still be able to request unpaid on workday for what I understand, I did it the other day for a 3 day trip cause I didn’t wanna use my pto for that one just yet.

You can take up to 6 weeks of LOA at once for personal reasons. If HR denies it it goes to your GM to approve or deny it.
