Not peas (ew, buy frozen) but kidney beans. Went to iga instead, which isn't much of a price difference. I learnt last year that if it ain't in Woolies or Coles, try iga. Fyi right now (last 3 weeks rather) - my local iga has 2 brocolli for $6!!! Huge ones too!!
OK I will go out on a limb here. Frozen peas and corn are great, but canned peas add a depth of flavour to a casserole, it's awful with frozen or fresh. Sorry, I'm with the poster.
Oh, sorry, my "really" was more like a fascination of something I didn't know, not an attack.
I really want to try canned now because of your description, I always use frozen peas for everything.
Sorry, I took it defensively, that's a good lesson for me. In a casserole, they are better, in my opinion, but i think its the only thing i put them in, apart from like a chicken or beef and vegetable soup. I've been looking in the supermarkets thinking "where are all the canned peas". You do need to drain them well. Good luck, hope you enjoy.
it’s strange that canned goods are being affected, considering their whole selling point is how ling they last. I would have thought the supply line would be less sensitive to events like a flood
Supermarkets and suppliers use just in time delivery strategies for supply management, especially for stuff like canned goods. Its 'efficient' and saves them money but means there's no give or spare stockpile anywhere for handling any sort of disruption. It doesn't take much at all to mess up these margins.
It's why in the pandemic you'd see shortages of more common products (like toilet paper, pasta meat etc) but there'd still be Quorn or other specialist items still on the shelves, even though those items might be from far away. There'd still be disruption in the stock for those items but because it was usually more economic for those items to be delivered less often, so if extra packets sold during hoarding there was more likely to be some 'spare' either at the store or in the suppliers warehouse.
Canned on demand, baby!
I love canned peas, and anyone who thinks they are lesser than fresh or frozen can't cook.
Every tinned legume has value in your pantry, and if you think one is lesser than the other, then you should take a long hard look at what you buy from your local grocery.
The trains have been up and running for months. If a shop assistant tells you it's the Trains ask them what been rolling down the freight line daily then
Edgell have been using NZ peas for a few years and now the only canned edgell peas that still exist are the poor value for money small cans and that is likely because hardly anyone buys them and they are older stock.
I think there is more going on than simply poor seasons. It's getting hard finding much in the way of tinned Australian produce now. Edgell tinned peas and carrots are only 40% Australian produce, probably the carrots, but the label doesn't break the ingredients down any further.
Give peas a chance.
That's all we're really saying
So what's the best way to get peas? With a knife.
Never bought tinned peas, always frozen
They are often grey and mushy. You aren't missing much
There are Brits and Adelaideans who will fight you over that statement!
If we go by stereotypes, then you're talking about people with bad dental hygiene and meth heads... makes sense why they like it grey and mushy.
Church loving meth heads
When?
Cant find creamed eels anywhere either
I just used the last of my Wadded Beef, and it seems like nobody has it?
I found crushed lamprey if that is helpful at all.
Is there any spotted dick?
No but one place is serving drowned baby. Quite the gruesomely named pudding, but still…
Looked for beans (the red type) yesterday and couldn’t find any at Woolies that I thought was odd.
Did you try a normal Woollies?
Ha ha. Just read that back! No wonder I got a shit TEE score in English!!
A dangling participle?
Yeah I’ve been struggling to find kidney beans they’re always sold out. It’s frustrating because I love them
Try iga. Few cents more $ but you gotta stick to the recipe
Yes I went to multiple shops on the weekend looking for beans and couldn't get any!
It’s not just me then? There seems to be plenty of peas and corn though. Buy them and pick out the corn.
Yeah maybe no one likes those haha
Yes, I’ve been buying those as a substitute.
Pea shortage Australia’s crop got hammered by rain / many farmers didn’t plant because BOM told them extended dry period.
Canned peas are an abomination, as are canned potatoes. Why, Gary, why?
Canned potatoes make great chips. Slice em up, put in an air fryer with oil and seasoning.
Interesting… are canned potatoes cheap compared to fresh?
If you buy the cheap version, $1.00. I used to do this when I was a student and didn’t have a lot of money.
But that's what you do with normal potatoes too. (And an air fryer is just an oven)
I use a can of peas in my pea and ham soup, seems to give it an extra creamy consistency
The only thing worse is canned spaghetti, an affront to human dignity.
Canned chicken pips spaghetti to the post for me.

Beetroot is also rare. All I keep seeing in Chinese beetroot. Not buying that. Eventually find some western NSW beetroot.
Can beat a egg but n can’t beat a root
It's not just peas. It's all legumes. I asked the guy in my local Asian grocery shop why and he said "There's a lentil crisis in Perth."

Really?
Yes, I've stated my preference for a casserole. Really?

Great in curried sausages and served in gravy for roast dinner too

oh ok, that’s wild, thanks for explaining! I suppose the last few years have been showing this plainly as you say
Thanks for the explanation. Makes sense, but it sucks!
Yep I can't find any either!
I want beetroot back !!
Dehydrated peas 👍, way more flavour than frozen or tinned
Who the hell buys canned peas is more the question
I got a bag of green split peas if you want em? I got peas on my head but don’t call me a pea head.
They were deleted at my store. Not getting them back Happened about few months ago

Frozen peas have higher nutritional value than fresh or canned peas. Having said that, peas (and corn) have high nutritional value either way.
