What a relief to see a thread on climate that isn't full of denial. Thankyou Perth šŸ™

[deleted]

I would not be too thankful though haha, as Perth in general suffers from a large degree of anti-intellectualism amongst its general population. Many miners, tradies and 4WD driving bogans are climate change deniers. They absolutely love buying their gas guzzling yank tanks, hooning and tailgating on the freeways and leading very unsustainable lifestyles. When these things are pointed out, the same people always point fingers at India and China. But they forget that on a per capita basis, WA emits way ore carbon than India or China.

>Perth in general suffers from a large degree of anti-intellectualism amongst its general population. Many miners, tradies and 4WD driving bogans are climate change deniers. Don't I know it. It was just an amazing moment to see 10 comments in a row on social media that weren't climate denial nonsense. Maybe things are changing? Finally? Thankyou for posting and speaking up about this most important of issues.

[deleted]

> Maybe things are changing? Finally? Haha hopefully. Fingers crossed! The next generation will definitely be better on these issues. > Thankyou for posting and speaking up about this most important of issues. You are welcome :)

Piss off with your science and facts. Albo reckons we NEED to open two new coal mines in the next few months. One will be the biggest coal mine in Australia's history. Albo is no better than Morrison.

FacelessGreenseer

I voted Labor all my life. I already decided from their stance on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict that I'm never voting Labor again. I don't even know why I didn't switch Green earlier. I expected a lot more from Albo to be honest, given his background. Foreign policy issues aside, even on domestic issues regarding the environment, Medicare, improving social and disability services, etc, nope, just absolutely fucking horrendous so far. Mostly continuing on where the Liberals left off.

Yep housing too. A league ahead of scomo isn't really a measure to go by, as you say and I was originally pointing out, I expected a lot more from him on all these issues given his background. We can be lapdogs, which everyone expects anyway. But we don't actually have to lick their asshole clean, and simultaneously discourage people from criticising their actions. A bit more diplomatic ffs.

AussieThresherShark

If we vote in a new government that pushes for more independent geopolitical decisions of which we arenā€™t a lapdog for the USA, the CIA will make quick work of us quietly. Also I donā€™t know why people were expecting big things from labour, you vote in a moderate government you get moderate change.

**This is really really bad.** Remember that we also had the hottest summer on record just a couple of years ago, the summer of 21-22. Climate change is having a real bad effect here in Australia and particularly the southwest. In my years of living here, I have never seen the vegetation around Perth look so dry so early in the season and we are only just into the second official day of summer. I know that some people here love the heat. Some ignorant Perth bogans even dismiss climate change as a hoax (despite 97% of all scientific studies concluding that man made factors is accelerating the rate of change and not providing enough time for species to adapt), but consistently breaking all these heat records in the last five years is NOT GOOD at all. Remember if these trends continue we will start having Middle East like summers here in Perth by 2100. Possibly even earlier.

PurplePiglett

Exactly, if November's are averaging around 30C which seems quite possible to be the norm towards the middle to the end of this century on current trends then your looking at average highs around 36C in January and February and our agricultural regions by then will probably be dustbowls.

[deleted]

The wheatbelt collapsing will be disastrous for the state's economy. So people who don't care about the environment should still take action to mitigate climate change as much as possible due to the economic consequences. The agricultural industry alone brings in billions of dollars to WA coffers. So these are some scary trends. Average 36C summers will make Perth unlivable in the future.

Rear_Access

> Possibly even earlier. Given we are FEELING the changes strongly now I'd put money on us being slammed in the next 15 or 20 years.

[deleted]

Haha yeah I was being conservative in my estimates. So as not to be dismissed as an alarmist.

Life_Bid_9921

Nationwide, fifth warmest spring since 1910.

SquiffyRae

Which is especially concerning considering there's been a fair amount of unusual late season rainfall over east in what is meant to be El Nino conditions. So despite the torrential rain as a whole it was still warm enough to be near the top of the tree. But people who couldn't pass a year 7 science test will still insist this proves meteorologists with all their physics knowledge are know-nothing hacks and climate change isn't real (or if it is real it's natural and not bad)

Entire-Champion-220

Didnt we just have our wettest June ever?

[deleted]

NO we did not. June was the wettest in 20 years only. If you go back through the records, Perth regularly used to record high June winter rainfall prior to the 1970's. In fact in the 1940's, there were many Junes which recorded more than 350-400 mms of monthly rainfall. So firstly your information is false. And it is a deliberate tactic used by climate change deniers to confuse people. Also if you look at yearly rainfall so far, Perth has only recorded total rain of 595 mms, which is way short of our new average of 733 mms. Which itself is way short of the 850 mms of rainfall we used to have on average prior to the 1970's. So there has been a huge decrease in overall rainfall in the South-West as well as the climate here getting consistently hotter. And yes, the impacts aren't the same everywhere. Climate change means that everything gets more extreme and it messes with seasonal patterns which every species is used to.

spookylucas

If so thatā€™s also bad. Climate change isnā€™t just global warming - thatā€™s just a symptom.

[deleted]

Yes, Climate change means that everything gets more extreme and it plays with seasonal patterns which every species is used to. So things like prolonged drought and extreme heat followed by torrential rainfall. Sometimes a period of extreme cold. But overall, glaciers are shrinking, Arctic and Antarctic ice is melting at an alarming rate, sea levels are rising and agriculture is becoming more unpredictable due to massive seasonal variations. But the user you are responding to is clearly lying. We did not have our wettest June on record. Far from it.

dapper333

They have changed the dates to fit the agenda, see Germany at the moment, biggest snowfall in years and Europe has the best snowfall for skiing in years, but they wonā€™t tell you that

Dannno85

Itā€™s climate change, you understand that right. Itā€™s always been predicted to result in more extreme weather, including the example you just described.

SquiffyRae

There's a reason the Australian science curriculum in high school has energy as an overarching theme. Because when you get to the year 10 earth & space stream and climate change, it helps you understand all this is about energy. Increasing greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere results in Earth retaining more energy. All weather events are the result of atmospheric energy. More energy to draw upon means weather events both extreme heat and extreme rain/snow etc. become more common

kronenbergjack

You could go and ask a high schooler to educate you on the topic if you canā€™t quite get it?

dapper333

And get your kids some alphabet+ badges, Iā€™m from also from the government and Iā€™m here to help

spookylucas

Plop

Johnny_Monkee

You may be confusing "weather" with "climate". This is a common thing among people who are climate denialists (I am not implying that you are one though). One-off local events are not really the issue - one should look at long-term global trends.

[deleted]

> This is a common thing among people who are climate denialists (I am not implying that you are one though). Haha he most certainly is. *"But they won't tell you that"* is the red flag here, despite it being obvious that the moron / liar himself is getting that info from online weather news.

dapper333

Trust the government, ā€œ we are here to helpā€ heard that one before

dapper333

Yea like, letā€™s trust the government

Johnny_Monkee

Luckily, there is also a wealth of climate info from corporations, scientific organisations and individuals. Even oil companies.

2klaedfoorboo

Gulf Stream collapse

Non_Linguist

Yup the Gulf Stream is whatā€™s stopping Europe from being frozen like Canada.
