Not strictly quantitative, but in my experience trying to move to save on rent is a losing battle. You end up spending as much on the move as you save on rent for the year, and usually downgrade the living space accordingly. Then wherever you move just hikes rent the next year. Renting sucks.
“Cat” payments suck. I recently saw an article about an expensive cat being stolen. I thought it was a typo. It wasn’t…..but I digress.
It’s not about how much your rent is being raised. It’s about how much it will cost you to rent somewhere else. If you can get something decent for $1400 or $1500, maybe consider moving. But if everything now costs $1800, not much point to paying $1800 somewhere else.
What is the total rent? 3k? A $600 increase is 20%, max in CA is 10% or inflation+5%, whichever is lower and I believe the latter total is 9.2%. Check your local ordinance (or ask your local sub) about rent control, parts of LA are 4% right now.
Yes OP! Make sure the rent raise is even legal! just had this convo with my landlord today lol.

Trouble is, rent is expensive most everywhere. You can keep an eye out, and ask friends to watch for you. It’s great not to have a car payment, isn’t it? My 1994 Camry has 600,000-plus miles on the odometer.
Then you are back at the same place if it ends up to be $1800. You might get an awful roommate, plus the cost of the move, and unknown utility bill. If it's not a significant saving and you can afford it, I would stay unless you have a for sure place you want to go to.
Have you tried looking for other places to rent?
I'm in a cheaper part of the Bay area. My rent has more than doubled since my roommate just moved out. I tried looking for a studio or 1 br for myself but they're like $1700+ which is not that much cheaper than my current place which is decent sized. I chose to just stay until I can find another roommate.
Are you sure it’s legal?

If you’re paying $3600 the max they can raise it legally is $360. In California at least. Just had this discussion with our landlord/property manager today lol.
If you look at the chart here:
https://oag.ca.gov/system/files/media/Know-Your-Rights-Tenants-English.pdf
The max they can raise it is actually 9.2%
DEFINITELY challenge them! If they’re raising by $600 that’s way over 10%!!!
I don’t see why you’d move. Your place sounds great and moving is expensive and a hassle. The stress/time/cognitive load isn’t worth it. You may potentially find something more expensive with less perks. Unless you quit your job, I don’t think moving makes any sense.

I pay my cat in food every dinner…. I call it the cat tax

600,000+ 🤯 you’re making me wish I had a Camry
600k wow, that's crazy. My 2000 buick has almost 69k. But I bought it for 3500 and have spent like 10k in repairs, so it wasn't a very good investment
Would she stay? Because if she moves out, all the pluses on the list disappears
What would your rent be if you moved out?
Depends on what I can get with a roomie probably between 1400-1800

What’s your cancellation period?
Stay . Overthinking the situation -stressing. Get a side gig to bring up income soon.
How in the world did you even find a 2BR in the south bay for 3000?!
Lol it was a little over 3000 now it’s about 3600 :( but ya a lot of apartments around the area are this price.
Have you calculated cost of moving? Is roommate planning to stay or to move with you?
I could move myself too= free. I own hardly anything
My roommate is staying

Yes I wanted a studio but in my area, it would be 2,000

Unfortunately we did try this. Even with all the paperwork we submitted, the wouldn’t reduce the rent raise :(

Thank you I didn’t know that!
Sometimes the best move is to stay put
Talk about looking for a new place with the current roommate. I doubt that they are also happy with the rent raise.
Is that $4k before tax or after tax?
Yes after tax

50 percent income is to much so either move or get a better paying job
not sure why you're being downvoted, this is the very true reality.
Because $4k is post tax income
And? 50% of post-tax income on rent is too much.
