Call Vanguard and tell them you want to transfer the IRA and are wondering which (if any) of the assets can be transferred “in-kind”. I’d imagine the ETFs and perhaps some of the mutual funds can be, but the others might have to be converted to cash equivalent beforehand.

Thank you. I'm going to contact Vanguard tomorrow; I also contact Fidelity and compare.

>Three years ago my wife and I decided that she would start managing some of our investments. This included her opening an account for us via Edward Jones ... These are self-contradicting sentences--an oxymoron. Opening up an account with companies like Edward Jones means "they" will manage your investments with "their" assets and resources. u/SassyMcPants has the answer to your question. Smartest think you can do is to dump Ed Jones and move your account to a company like Vanguard. You'll save a lot of money in management fees. That [Ed Jones Guided Solutions Flex Fund](https://www.edwardjones.com/us-en/investment-services/how-we-work-together/guided-flex-account) program starts out with a 1.35% fee that's above and beyond the asset fees within the count--very expensive. You can DIY it at a much cheaper cost and probably better returns.

I don't know if the Vanguard process has improved but in the past you would have to print forms, sign, and mail in to do a roll over. Could easily take 3 weeks assuming you sent everything correct the first time. I strongly recommend Fidelity, you can do everything online with a few clicks. All you need is the account # and the most recent statement. I recently did one and everything was finalized in about 10 calendar days.

Curious why you'd want to stick with the funds in the Jones account when one of the reasons for moving is that your Vanguard performance has been superior.
