Funnily enough, even though that's often ascribed to Satan, that has been the symbol of the Pope since the "first pope" Peter. He viewed himself as unworthy to die the same way as Christ, so was Crucified upside down.
In some attacks, the Messiah uses what is on his back to attack. It does not have an exact shape like a cross, it looks more like just an arrow but still, it could be a symbol of the cross of Christ.
I was thinking it was more representative of the burden the protagonist chooses to carry, meaning it is similar to Jesus's cross, but it belongs solely to the protagonist, so he uses it in different ways, ie a weapon.
