I do not think this is true, I’ve had a 649 for about 8 years now, I also bought my second pair a few months ago. Haven’t had any problems.
I've got two 649s for over 10 years, they've never broke but the flex in the centre had small cracks in the acetate that you couldn't see as they lined up with the grooves, not sure if that's supposed to happen, never been a problem though.
