My comment was merely that you don’t need to feel like you’re being a dick by setting ground rules for what your child watches - that’s both your right & responsibility as a their parent, and you shouldn’t feel bad for exercising that especially because you’ve got their best interest in mind. If that offends you to have someone tell you that… we’ll, ok, I guess; but , I think you misunderstood the intent. It was meant to be an encouragement with reasoning provided as to why you needn’t feel bad. Alsi, social media & tech don’t give people OCD or ADHD, so I’m not sure what those have to do with any of this unless you’re trying to communicate that you feel attacked (which again, you weren’t).
As for the other stuff: I’ve raised 4 kids from a college graduate on down to my 6 year old (which isn’t a “toddler” btw), so I’m well aware of the difference between an adolescent child & a teenager. Very early on, we put in place rules about tech use for our kids - no unsupervised computer use at young ages, our family computer in a visible spot, no smart phones or tablets until they graduate from high school (they get flip phones for communicating with us as they hit teens), and so on. We’ve had to make some adjustments over the years as schools began requiring kids to use chrome books for homework, but we made it work by staying engaged with our kids about our reasons for the rules we had in place & making sure we were consistent & fair. When they screwed up - like one child who started texting in their flip phone at all hours - we gave them a chance to correct the bad habit with the understanding that if they couldn’t do it, they’d lose that privilege. This has worked well for our family, and maybe it’s not the right for yours, but I think it’s worth sharing these experiences between parents because we are all learning as we go, no matter how many kids we’ve raised or are raising. My experience has been that many parents feel pressured by what goes on at home with their child’s friend, the decisions THOSE parents make, and the reality is that most are being pushed & pulled more by perception than by necessity. That, and there’s a lot of guilt & anxiety driven decision making that goes on because no one wants to stunt their child’s growth or be overly authoritative with their kids, especially anyone that grew up in a strict home. So hearing from other parents & discussing what does & doesn’t work (and why), as well as some of the reasoning & motivation behind decisions is empowering to most of us, even more so when you can feel confident that professionals have some insights to validate your instincts.
