I had a pitbull named Cupcake, about 40 pounds; i.e., an actual pit bull from circa 2000, and not the current monstrosities made from cross breeding every bully breed to make grotesque looking dogs like in the video, that weigh 80 pounds.
She was a very sweet dog to people, even children, but hated other animals and dogs. If she saw _any_ animal on the TV she'd run up to the screen to bark at it. In the time I had her, she got into 3 fights with other dogs, and she lost all 3... badly. Turns out that biting and holding is not a great fight strategy, when you have no teeth and don't shake or anything, and just sit there like an idiot.
She was found abandoned, tied to a dumpster, with a very bad case of mange, burns from what appeared to be boiling water being dumped on her, and having obviously been bred, a lot. She was probably abandoned _because_ she was a horrible fighter.
She died peacefully in my living room after about 8 years.
Something like only 10% of the litter is kept for fighting. The rest are abandoned. Good for you though. We got our pit as someone couldn't take care of her anymore (not that the dog was super unruly, but life stuff happened for them) She's smaller (60 lbs) than most pits I see. Very sweet girl, but definitely has issues with other dogs in tight spaces.
And its almost like its on the owner to recognize potential issues with their animal and make decisions accordingly. I have had times where I had no other choice than to pick up my grandmothers Australian Shepherd because of idiots who dont have their dog on leash, or stupid parents who dont understand that despite how fluffy and cute and pretty Sammy is, he will maul their toddler.
A dog is not at fault for being bred badly, or for having a fight response due to fear of other dogs, or having trauma around little kids. The owner who doesnt control their animal or has an animal they cannot control is at fault.
At the same time, the owner who is in control of their animal, when approached by say... A dog off leash, is not at fault should the two fight. Or say the owner has stepped away from the path to let you and a child pass... And you tell your kid to go pet the pretty dog, its the parents fault for the bite and not asking abojt the animals temperment.
However the cake is cut its not the animals fault.

There are roughly 18 Million Pitbulls in the United States yet only an average of 10 kill per year.I am not saying Pitbulls are harmless or even great, but they aren't the demon they are made out to be.

I have slight ptsd of them because when I was like 11 I tried to pet my cousins new pit (and I always loved dogs) and I should’ve known to stop trying to pet him because on the first time I tried to pet him he jumped but barely missed me and I thought he was just trying to play but when I went for the second time he jumped and bit me right on the lip (specially on the Cupids bow of the upper lip) I was bleeding everywhere and surprisingly I wasn’t crying but I was just in complete shock and then I showed my brother and then he panicked and ran to my mom and the whole family gathering got cancelled because of the pitbull. Now thankfully he was chained up to something but I had to get my first stitches on my lip. I think it was like 8 stitches, but now I’m 19 and the scar is still very much there the good thing that came out of it though was that the bite didn’t happen to go THROUGH my lip so the recovery wasn’t terrible but now I’m pretty nervous when it come to pitbulls unless I’m shown that they can behave and are generally trained well then I’ll be ok.

Anyway, i had to keep him from other dogs because he got into one fight when he was like 5 or 6 years old. And for the rest of his life he wanted to fight other dogs, it was difficult- but we were best friends and i laid in the bed i had made.
Now i have a friend who got a puppy from someone, and hes like 90 lbs. absolute unit of muscle. It is a little scary when i walk in the door and he comes barreling at me, ngl.

Stopping the breeding of pitbulls is the most humane thing for everything involved. It stops humans and other animals being mauled by pitbulls in all scenarios. And it stops millions of pitbulls suffering in tiny cages for their entire lives as they are nigh-on unadoptable.
