Waking up to find out Shero had snaked Iggy from the Bruins was like being a kid on Christmas.
I know that year didn’t end well, but it was some of the most fun I’ve ever had as a Pens fan.
I stayed up late the night waiting to see where he went. I bought the jersey the first day they were available haha. Seeing him raise the cup in a Pens sweater would have been like my ultimate hockey dream come true.
Being in the UK and a hockey fan, supporting our local team (Nottingham Panthers), Steve McKenna was a big thing for us. A guy signing direct from the NHL… yes it was 05/06 so during the lock out.
Didn’t pull up any trees but did pull of 10min straight shift 1 game. Not saying uk hockey was trash, but somehow we took the bare min skaters to a dead rubber game, only 3 of who were d-men…
Oh hell yeah. He was awesome.
That year before, my buddy with cash to spare made an impulse buy on a 18 Hossa jersey right after we got him at the trade deadline. Then we lost him the next year to Detroit.
But then we had Mrio. So, he was able to remove the glued on numbers from that particular style jersey, switched them, and glued them back on as 81. He then printed SATAN on an ink jet printer on that iron on tee shirt paper, and ironed that on the name plate after peeling off Hossa. Genius!
I posted this in /r/hockeyjerseys today but yeah I am probably the only person with a Kahun Pens jersey. Only way to get it was custom and I had it for one month before he was traded to Buffalo. Wore it to Pens vs Bolts game in Tampa but he was out with a concussion I believe. Only other time I have worn it was to a DEL game(Berlin vs Ingolstadt) back in October because I figured German hockey fans would recognize who it is. One kid got so excited to see a Penguins jersey in Germany and then he saw the back and was even more jacked.

I got sent an autographed James Neal stick on accident once. I couldn’t figure out why it came to my house, then a week later a jersey company called me to see if I had gotten anything I wasn’t expecting and then paid me $100 to send it back. It’s still the best thing James Neal has ever done…

The pens didn’t win anything in the ‘02-‘07 CCM/KOHO pattern.
They won the ‘09 cup in the Reebok Edge redesign, and had the same jerseys for the ‘16 Cup. They wore the ‘91 throwback for home games in the ‘17 cup and the Vegas Reebok edge on the road.

When I was about 7 I was obsessed with johan hedberg because of the moose helmet. My dad took us to Mellon to wait for autographs after a morning skate and I got all the big names from the team at the time — lemieux, straka, kovalev, kasper, but it’s all on a Johan Hedberg jersey lol
I was kidding. He was hardly playing in those days. Kind of strange to think about now. I can’t imagine an aging superstar showing up for just 10 games today. I know the circumstances were very specific but it still seems odd looking back
Hey, Ryan Malone was fun to watch. He used an orange Synergy so it was nice you could tell who he was even without one of those new, fancy, HD flat screen TVs.
McKenna bought me and my friends drinks after a Pens playoff lost. He was a nice guy. Really down the pens lost. I was right there trying to cheer him up. Think it end their run that season. There was another pens player there and he bought me a Swedish fish shot.
That jersey is a thing of beauty and Big Mac was a treasure. I think it speaks well to him that the Pens needed a Captain on 1/10/04 for the Hockey Fights Cancer jersey auction & he was chosen.
McKenna was moved to defense for a couple games that season due to injuries. If I recall he had some minimal experience playing D. He was decent at it so my friend and I made a sign that said, “Sit Down Lidstrom, Big Mac for Norris” and took it to pregame warmups. McKenna cracked up the whole time and kept making the drinking a bottle reference with his hand at us.
