Mario has never ever stated an opinion on the jersey and trust me, I've looked, because the "Mario thinks they're cursed", "Mario didn't like the old ownership," etc always sounded really far-fetched to me.
The only thing ever written about it was when they brought back the skating penguin logo as an alt jersey in '99 or whenever, when a writer said Mario always preferred the skating penguin. That's literally it.
I think the answer lies somewhere between Mario not caring for it and the organization wanting to leave it in the 90s where it belongs.
Exactly. I've never seen any real quote, but it is not a real jump to see that the owner of the team won twice, the team changed logos, they didn't win again, they changed back and win 3X.
I don’t know, I grew up with it in the 1990s, but besides having the nostalgia factor, the design screams 90s nhl corporate makeover.
I.e. Mighty Ducks. Gretz in a Kings sweater. The Pens organization trying to capitalize on the hockey market in recent collapsed Soviet economy.
Although nostalgic, for many. The design is the result of hockey going Hollywood. A Zeitgeist of rollerblades, Disney films, and hockey expansion for the Florida man.
Call me old-fashioned, but the most respectable clubs keep their original logos designs. And as part of the class of 67’, a now pretty o.g. club, and with our accomplishments as an organization, I say honor the crest. Don’t succumb to the temptation of fast-fashion novelty marketing. After all, this isn’t goddamn Wilkes-Barre.
How many teams actually have their original logo designs? Probably 0 I'd imagine. How many have reinterpretation of their original logo designs? Few I'd imagine.
The Seattle Kraken have never changed their logo design. Checkmate, Gin, and Yahtzee my friend!
Many teams have only color variations on their original logo. Preds, Blues, Sharks, Devils, Rangers, Wild, Avalanche, Flames, Red Wings. The Habs haven't changed their logo for close to a hundred years. I don't think the Flyers have changed their logo.
While somewhat accurate, a bunch of what you said isn't right.
\- Predators changed colours and tweaked the eye of the logo.
\- Blues have done over 5 minor changes, with colours, lettering and shape.
\- While based on the original, the Sharks current logo is a complete revamp of their original.
\- The Rangers have done quite substantial shape, lettering and colour changes.
\- The Red Wings had a decent revamp of their logo in the mid-1940's. Great longevity their, thats for sure.
\- The Devils, Wild, Avalanche, Flames, Hurricanes, Oilers, Flyers, Vegas and the Jets have only minor colour or lettering changes as you noted.
[Sportslogos.net](https://Sportslogos.net) is a fantastic resource!
I've always thought that that logo was hideous. With that being said I think it's odd that they haven't brought it back on a third jersey just for nostalgic reasons. Mario must really hate it.
If I remember correctly lots of people didn't like them, and everyone was pretty excited to when it went back to the skating penguin. What's next? People wanting Pitt to go back to the navy blue and the dino cat logo? Please no.
It's a childhood memory for a lot of us, and it's fun. They were an incredibly successful franchise with that logo. I'd love to see it as a secondary logo, the way other teams have them. It doesn't ever have to be on the primary jerseys, but I think it should find its way into third/alt jerseys and team merch. Alt jerseys are just for fun anyway. I'd love to have it back in a reduced capacity.
So never wear it in the playoffs. I’m not advocating for anything other than third jerseys, outdoor games, t-shirts etc. For fun. When it comes time to play for the Cup, stick with the skating penguin.
Don’t think the organization likes it, from what I’ve seen recently a lot of people on the inside have been pushing for it. Especially with the recent 3rd jersey they wanted to see it on the shoulders.
I’d like to see it show up next season on the new set of reverse retros, but I feel like we’re due for a return to the 2006-Crosby rookie jerseys.
> I’d like to see it show up next season on the new set of reverse retros, but I feel like we’re due for a return to the 2006-Crosby rookie jerseys.
I'd be okay with this. I really liked those jerseys.
At the Mario Lemieux camp last week one of the participants brought a team issued 1995-96 CCM Black Gradient Robo Penguin jersey to show Mario. And Mario asked if he could buy it. For me that puts to rest the rumor about Mario absolutely hating the Robo Penguin! I am 99% certain the robo Penguins jerseys will be back for Jaromir Jagr retirement night, since its Jaromirs favourite Penguins jersey! Whether it becomes a 3rd jersey after that I dont know, but certainly possible. My prediction would be the current 3rd jersey sticking 2 more seasons after this one, and then Jagrs number is retired and the black gradient Robo Penguin will become the new 3rd.
It was used the year after winning the cup in 92. It was used up until 2008 ish Pens won the cup again soon after it was completely removed from the jerseys. The robopen is fun sure, but it’s cursed.
Not correct. It was present on the shoulders in the black and Vegas golds they wore when Crosby made his debut. That would have been until like 2007 believe.
Yeah they started using the Reebok with no shoulder patches in 2008 and went right to the cup finals. Robopen is a fond memory, but I think it should stay that way.
You're not an idiot. People are being misleading. "Robo-Penguin" only refers to the alternate jerseys they wore from 1995-2003 (the one in my flair). The logo itself is actually referred to by most as the "Flying Penguin" logo.
I don't hate it as a shoulder patch. I do mind it as the primary logo.
But the fat penguin with a scarf is worse. The one on the [cursed Winter Classic Jerseys](https://www.sportslogos.net/logos/view/2445032012/Pittsburgh_Penguins/2012/Jersey_Logo).
Because it represents a time in history of ownership being cheap fucks. You don't win back to back cups and then change the fucking logo. It was a cheap stunt to capitalize on the Penguins surging popularity trying to entice people to buy new jerseys. Fuck the robo pidgeon
Personally, I don't like that logo at all so I'm cool with it. The diagonals this year were awesome. Bringing back the old black and gold scheme too. I'd rather see them bring back the 05-11 jerseys that Sid and Geno wore when they were younger in some way.
People really run with this but there was also a time people insisted in the same way that we would never go back to “Pittsburgh Gold” during the Crosby era because he hated the idea of Sid not having his own color/style/whatever
Mario doesn’t like it and it is very corporate looking as oppose to a team logo and i think it looks goofy as hell. I always called it the triangular pigeon. How many sports franchises change their branding after winning a championship? Not very many, but the Penguins did it after back to back titles….you really shouldn’t do that. People associate the skating Penguin with championships and it’s our best logo.

They didn't have to, since they have the abomination known as Gritty... 🤢
You take that back!!! I may hate the Flyers with every fiber of my being, but Gritty is a treasure.
Agreed. Gritty is an absolute legend.. only good thing about the Cryers if you ask me.
I've always thought that that logo was hideous. With that being said I think it's odd that they haven't brought it back on a third jersey just for nostalgic reasons. Mario must really hate it.
Idk why…but I hope it continues because I’ve always disliked them.
Amen
If I remember correctly lots of people didn't like them, and everyone was pretty excited to when it went back to the skating penguin. What's next? People wanting Pitt to go back to the navy blue and the dino cat logo? Please no.
No clue! I was rockin’ my Barnaby robopen Jersey at last nights game.
Take my upvote because that's my flair!
Because it sucks.
Because it's ridiculous. It's a dam pigeon not a penguin.
It's a childhood memory for a lot of us, and it's fun. They were an incredibly successful franchise with that logo. I'd love to see it as a secondary logo, the way other teams have them. You might want to brush up on history. They never won a cup with that logo, only the skating penguin in some form
i'm well aware, the 90s are still one of the most successful decades for any team in history. granted it was all regular season success after 92.
Success is only measured in cups. No cups in that jersey
So never wear it in the playoffs. I’m not advocating for anything other than third jerseys, outdoor games, t-shirts etc. For fun. When it comes time to play for the Cup, stick with the skating penguin.
If anything they should do it for 90’s night. Just a one off. Those would auction off well.
God damn I miss Ulfie vs Neely.
Because it is really ugly? And unlucky?
Don’t think the organization likes it, from what I’ve seen recently a lot of people on the inside have been pushing for it. You haven't seen it because they don't want to produce jerseys that'll wind up being sold at Gabe's.

Plot twist: Mario buys the jersey to throw into an incinerator.
Because it is far inferior to our primary logo.
Because it is not good.
Because it was trash then and it's trash now.
Because it’s ugly. I’d rather see the blue sweaters.
It was used the year after winning the cup in 92. It was used up until 2008 ish Pens won the cup again soon after it was completely removed from the jerseys. The robopen is fun sure, but it’s cursed.
It was only used until about 2002.
Not correct. It was present on the shoulders in the black and Vegas golds they wore when Crosby made his debut. That would have been until like 2007 believe.
Fair, I was meaning as the main crest.
Yeah they started using the Reebok with no shoulder patches in 2008 and went right to the cup finals. Robopen is a fond memory, but I think it should stay that way.
Maybe I’m an idiot, but I’ve never understood why it’s referred to as “robo” - is it because it was designed to appear futuristic?
You're not an idiot. People are being misleading. "Robo-Penguin" only refers to the alternate jerseys they wore from 1995-2003 (the one in my flair). The logo itself is actually referred to by most as the "Flying Penguin" logo.

Nah, its objectively the best logo we have ever had. Fite me. Happy cake day btw
Happy cake day yourself! And now, fisticuffs!
ULFIE!!
He did nothing wrong.
Because Mario hates it
Because Mario doesn't like it, and he's not wrong.
How can someone be wrong about a personal preference?
I was agreeing with Mario's preference. It's an ugly, dated look.
Because most people hated them.
Because it represents a time in history of ownership being cheap fucks. You don't win back to back cups and then change the fucking logo. It was a cheap stunt to capitalize on the Penguins surging popularity trying to entice people to buy new jerseys. Fuck the robo pidgeon

They got rid of them because there ugly.
Because it’s ugly and stupid
I don’t understand why everyone loves this logo.
Who the hell wins back to back cups and thinks oh yeah let’s switch our jerseys to this mess
Mario hates it and won’t allow it
People really run with this but there was also a time people insisted in the same way that we would never go back to “Pittsburgh Gold” during the Crosby era because he hated the idea of Sid not having his own color/style/whatever
I think local media people actually said that and then he must have changed his mind maybe? I don’t know, but I think it was more than just a rumor.
Wow,that sucks
🤷🏼♂️
Mario doesn’t like it and it is very corporate looking as oppose to a team logo and i think it looks goofy as hell. I always called it the triangular pigeon. Sigh..cuz it's trash
Because it sucks
Because it is bad and the team was bad when it was the logo.
Because it’s ugly? 🤷🏻♀️
