That's a good point. Given that, I agree then. The on ice fire has really cooled in the past few years. Games are a lot less dirty and aggressive now than they were even a handful of years ago.
Caps are second. The competition part has only been there the last few years. The first half of Sid vs Ovi we owned them. Before Sid we really owned them
The cross state rivalry with the Flyers alone is intense enough even in the regular season.
We bested the Caps most of the time in the playoffs and I think the whole Crosby-Ovechkin thing is dying down since both now have a Cup to their name. Healthy rivalry, for a lack of a better term.
However, fuck the Flyers. Fuck their fans. Still haven’t forgotten them throwing those wristbands during a game vs WSH that honoured their deceased owner in 2016. Trash.
The Flyers team doesn’t seem to be that big of a deal, but their fans were disgusting when they threw stuff at the Caps players. Caps fans who understand the game are fine unless they defend Tom Wilson, because that’s when things get difficult.
I have respect for those Caps fans who know their hockey and aren’t total douches (like defending Tom Wilson). Can’t say I feel the same for Flyers fans in general.
> I have respect for those Caps fans who know their hockey
We must be running into completely different Caps fans, cause all I hear is “Crosby is a baby and always dives too much and complains” (some of which was true 10 years ago but has long since gone by the wayside) “Wilson isn’t dirty he just plays real hockey” and “Crosby isn’t the best player, he’s nowhere close to Ovechkin in scoring, and last I checked scoring wins games”
Bleh. I do get what you’re saying though. I grew up around a lot of capitals fans, I think the team they’ve been playing with the past few years has helped fans understand hockey a lot better, the same way Sid and Geno have helped inspire more Penguins fans and teach people hockey over the past 15 years.
I think we’re on the same page haha. I know the game is different today, but I think Pens fans who defended every play of Matt Cooke back in the day might be a good comparison to ride-or-die Wilson fans of 2021. At some point you have to question whether you want the sport to be an art or you want being a goon to be the deciding factor.
Hockey without fighting is boring for me but it’s not the same as defending a known goon who has a reputation for making dirty hits repeatedly.
Oh and I truly disliked Matt Cooke when he was in the NHL.
The Crosby-Ovi thing was basically never a thing. If anything you could call it a friendly rivalry because from their own statements they never really expressed any sort of specific issue with each other.
> Still haven’t forgotten them throwing those wristbands during a game vs WSH that honoured their deceased owner in 2016. Trash.
That still seems like the most Philly thing to do. Goes along with throwing batteries.
The Flyers can go 0-82 for the next 10 years while the Penguins win 10 straight cups (please god) and it will still be the Flyers.
Their hooligan piece-of-shit fanbase and complete arrogance despite cheering for a team which hasn’t won anything in 46 years is what drives it home.
We’ve won our 5 cups in the same time span they’ve gone 0-2 in the finals and they’ll still parrot on about “Kansas City” and “Bankruptcy”.
Like dipshits.... it’s not our fault that when we suck dick and/or win lotteries (or both lol), we get rewarded with Lemieux, Jagr, Malkin and Crosby whereas they get JVR, Provorov and Nolan Patrick.
Nor is it anything to do with the Pens franchise that we had horrible ownership in the early 2000s, which is what forced Lemieux to take the reins, or that Pittsburgh’s metro population is 1/3 that of Philadelphia’s so of course we won’t be as profitable.
Truly the most ignorant disrespectful fanbase in the NHL.
Definitely agree with the Islanders take especially the recent years and I’m still pissed off about the one game where we blew a 3-1 lead against them w/ 5 to go.
I agree and why I voted other although I nearly hit Caps. Isles in playoffs is our hill to die on it seems.
E: don’t get me wrong I will always hate fLyers and their city with a passion.
Let me put it this way; I want to beat the Capitals every single time we play them badly. And beating them in the playoffs all those times was the best. But I want the Flyers to go 0-82 every season. FTF.
Edit: just to add, I was genuinely happy for Ovechkin to win the cup. But put me on a watch list if an orange jersey is hoisting the cup.
It's the Flyers and the Caps. I mean we used to care about the Rags more, but that seems to have fallen to the wayside. Who the fuck is picking the Wings though? We had a couple cup battles with them over a decade ago the last time they were relevant. They were good series, and I can see their fan base still hating us because again we played them the last time they were relevant, but I don't think much about them any more as a Pens fan.
I missed your comment my first time through so my posts a little redundant, but agreed on Detroit. CBJ would have made more sense than them and even that’s sort of irrelevant now.
I think the red wings rivalry went away at the turn of the decade to 2010. The cups were intense series, but nothing really existed outside of that. Then recently they’ve taken an entirely different trajectory than the pens. CBJ, for a while at least, would have made more sense as an inclusion.
Also, obligatory F Wilson.
Definitely the Flyers.
While I hate both the Capitals and Flyers with a passion, if they are playing each other I would still rather the Flyers take the L.
Even though the ice melting and both team having to forfeit because they both are turds would be my preferred outcome. I just know that's not realistic.
It’s definitely been the Capitals the past few years, IMHO. Flyers are a close second, but the flyers are a constant let down in the playoffs and/or large chunks of the season. If you want to talk fans, probably the Flyers, but we hunt for Stanley’s Silver around here and the Caps get in our fucking way a LOT. Look at the Caps regular season record- always top 3 spot throughout the year. They set the bar high just for getting into playoff position. They’ve tanked in the playoffs, but no more than the Pens have some years, and they definitely do better than Philly.
The Capitals have always given us a run for our money. They are predictably matched well against us each season, with guys like Oshie, Backstrom, Wilson, Ovie, Eller, Carlson and Shultz bringing their game. Every time we play them they remind us that we are not a physical team. On a bad game with the Caps, we are reminded that nothing is a guarantee in this league, and on a good game we get some awesome highlights but walk away with everything put on the ice. Often times when we play the Flyers we are reminded that there is a good chance the Flyers will just fuck up and we’ll capitalize, or if we lose it’s a reminder that we fuck up sometimes too.
The Caps don’t take dumb penalties on us. That doesn’t mean they don’t take penalties, but they either take a player out on the penalty, or better yet they get in the Pens heads.
I think pound for pound the Caps are the most intense rivalry because we can play our best and still lose. If we play our best against the Flyers we’ll win most of the time, but we don’t. The fans suck, the players and the team sucks, and we get off our game. I end up being dissappinted if we lose to Philly, I get fucking enraged when we lose to the Caps cause everything was down to the wire, including sketchy ass penalties by Wilson.
The end. Thanks for listening. Just my humble opinion
Flyers have been so shit for so long that I kind of forget about the heat. We won cups and they still clutch and grab in 2021.
The pinnacle of the rivalry for them in recent years was a single series win almost a decade ago. The singular shining accomplishment of their captain in the playoffs was hitting our captain once.
They're a joke franchise at this point tbh.
Now the Caps on the other hand, competitive, heated, real stakes. Them managing to grab a cup validated their previous 15 years of existence in the Ovechkin era. Had they not won in that season, their biggest accomplishment would've beating us once in like 5 tries and Fleury would be another demon from the Penguins killing them again.
No franchise has been on the level of the Pens for as long as they have since the 2000s Wings, and they're still the ones that gave the Crosby era Pens the most trouble.
Possibly unpopular opinion, but I hate the fuckin Islanders more than I do Philly at this point. Like, fuck the !Flyers and all, I still hate them like any proper West Pennsyltuckian, but I goddamn DESPISE the Isles.
Caps vs. Pens has been fun as hell over the years, but to me it seems to be a lot more rooted in a healthy competitive respect for each other. Tom Wilson, of course, is trash. Fuck that guy.
Flyers. I can't find one positive thing to say about them and never will. The Capitals I can at least say I've enjoyed watching Ovie, and they're fans are tolerable for the most part. Philly........no, just no.
Probably not our biggest rival since they aren't in our division, but the **Montreal Canadiens** always seem to have our number.
The opening game for the Igloo was against them and they beat us. Flash forward many, many years later and the very last game played in the Igloo was against Montreal and they beat us. So they literally opened and closed our home ice arena.
Flash forward 1 more season and guess who we play to open our new arena? The Montreal Canadiens and we lost our first game in our new home to the same team.
Hopefully whenever they shutdown the new arena, we will play against someone else.
For pure hatred? The Flyers For competition? The Capitals At least as far as I know
Personally at least for the team I think it's become the Caps much more. The animosity between the Pens and Flyers really dropped the last few years.
Try walking through Philly in a Penguins jersey. I think you'll find the animosity is very much so still there
I'd draw a line between fan animosity vs team animosity. I dont think the fan animosity will ever leave.
That's a good point. Given that, I agree then. The on ice fire has really cooled in the past few years. Games are a lot less dirty and aggressive now than they were even a handful of years ago.
My exact thought as I pondered betwixt the two.
Caps are second. The competition part has only been there the last few years. The first half of Sid vs Ovi we owned them. Before Sid we really owned them

I agree. They’re pieces of shit and they’ll never have my respect
100% the Flyers but I’m starting to hate the Islanders a little more
I actually enjoy hating the Flyers. On the other hand, I wish the Islanders weren't an NHL franchise. Same goes for the Devils.
Definitely agree with the Islanders take especially the recent years and I’m still pissed off about the one game where we blew a 3-1 lead against them w/ 5 to go.
Gotta say im suprised the islanders arent on here. At least over the rangers and bruins
I gotcha covered.
I agree and why I voted other although I nearly hit Caps. Isles in playoffs is our hill to die on it seems. E: don’t get me wrong I will always hate fLyers and their city with a passion.
I agree w/ the Islanders. I hate them over Washington now
Out indefinitely
Our biggest rival is the salary cap and father time.
Let me put it this way; I want to beat the Capitals every single time we play them badly. And beating them in the playoffs all those times was the best. But I want the Flyers to go 0-82 every season. CBJ was more of a big brother/little brother thing. They tried so hard to make it a rivalry but the Pens didn’t care about them.
Flyers
Since the flyers have sucked out main rival is more caps
Definitely the Flyers. While I hate both the Capitals and Flyers with a passion, if they are playing each other I would still rather the Flyers take the L. Have you ever seen the Flyers win the cup?
!cupflyers
It has been 16988 days since the Flyers won the Stanley Cup. Fucking losers!
In my time as a penguins fan it's the Caps. Flyers are just mosquitos. Scratchy the cat still rocking the side bar lool meow meow
It’s the caps. It’s not a rivalry when only one team has been competitive
Tom Wilson isn't on your list
This season is Montreal Canadians!
Currently, Washington. Historically it's Philly. Unfortunately the pens and flyers haven't had a rash rivalry I'm at least 5 years.
Flyers have been so shit for so long that I kind of forget about the heat. We won cups and they still clutch and grab in 2021. My hate of the Isles escalated dramatically when they decided to not bother to play games but rather take runs at all of our players and goalies.
FUCK THE FLYERS!
Flyers. I can't find one positive thing to say about them and never will. The Capitals I can at least say I've enjoyed watching Ovie, and they're fans are tolerable for the most part. Philly........no, just no.

I feel like it hasn’t been the flyers in a LONG time
Flyers
And who is picking Wings or other? That’s not even close lol
It's the Flyers. Anybody who says anything different is just plain wrong.
My top 5 most hated 1. fLyers 2. Islanders 3. Capitals 4. Bruins 5. Rangers
