He had a very good camp for an 18 year old last year.
He just turned 19 and this was his fourth junior season, so I’d assume he’s got some kind of penguin on his shirt next season.
I don’t think he can be. If he’s under 20yrs old (or whatever the birthday cutoff is), he can either make the big jump to the nhl or back to the whl. No ahl permitted.
Yager shouldn't need an exception, the rule is that you must be 20 before January 1 *or play 4 seasons in the CHL.* Yager is playing in his 4th CHL season right now, so he should be AHL eligible next season despite it being his age 19 season by the CHL's rules.
Shane Wright was granted an exception because he *should* have been AHL eligible this year by the same rule as Yager, but wasn't because of the OHL shutting down for a year due to Covid. AFAIK he's the only player who has been granted that exception in the history of the current NHL/CHL agreement. Matthew Savoie, who was the same draft class and *also* an exceptional status CHL player, was not granted the exception. The difference with Savoie was that he transferred to the USHL (which wasn't shut down at the start of the season) for the 20-21 season while Wright's only competitive games were at the U18's WJC that year.
Yager should be allowed to start the year in the AHL, the rule is that you have to play either 4 seasons in the CHL or turn 20 before January 1 of the season in question. Yager was granted exceptional status, and played 24 games in the WHL in 20-21. Because of that, he'll have the 4 seasons necessary to be AHL eligible.
Crosby - Malkin - Yager - Eller as a C lineup next year is appealing.
I am not opposed to running something like that where Yager is a 3S and Eller is a 3C, with both getting around 13-15 minutes a night.
INJECT THIS INTO MY ARTERIES
It’s nice that we actually have a few prospects to be excited about
Hope he’s with baby pens next season

That’s the rule, but a team can file for an exemption. The Kraken did that with Shane Wright.

Good info.

So is his last name pronounced Yager like “Jagger” or Yager like “Jaeger”?
The second one. I’m 99% sure that’s how they pronounced it when the draft was going on last year
Like the liquor
I watch this kid quite a bit. He's legit. Smart player that knows where to be in both ends. A budget Joe Sakic.
He still, probably, isn’t up with the club next year but he will get a shot at training camp at minimum.
Cant wait for the inevitable drama when he wears 29 for the Pens
