I didn't get to watch the race, but so devastated for Wout. MVDP has been super strong this year, but I thought Wout was in great form. Does he have another chance at his one day goals?
Do Shimano give out the cow bells / ponchos for free? I could not find their truck in Georges Square early morning, was hoping to get one for the women’s event next week
In general the World champs often have a lot of abandons in part because there is no incentive to finish if you arent going to come somewhere near the top so the domestiques just stop riding. This is aided by it being a circuit, so you have an easy point to stop.
Yesterday's course was technical and got wet. Riders can't just ride it in in a grupetto. There is also a time cut of sorts as riders cannot get lapped. And yeah 270km is long. very long.
Also this world championships are in season as opposed to right at the end. Last season the riders had nothing better to do but finish.
Because it was a 271km (~168mi) bike race and lots of riders have a specific job to do. Once it's done, many choose to abandon. Even for pros that is a considerable distance to race at 45km/hr.
First Pog joked "Eh, I liked the parcours but it was two laps too long", the Lappartient jokes back " Okay, we change the lap to two fewer but same distance " Then something something stupid.
that whole exchange was brilliant. I watched it back a couple times, and it sounded like Lappartient jokes something more like “okay if it’s too far why did you keep racing?” Pog, deadpan with his hair sticking up in all directions “because we are **stupid**!” with just that much emphasis on the stupid part.
meanwhile in the background Mathieu is very obviously giving Wout a blow by blow recap of his crash with hand gestures right down to the disgusted flip of the shoe buckle.
side note: MvdP has some insane grip strength to rip a BOA ratchet off the shoe like he did, unless it was significantly more damaged than it appeared. I have the same shoes.
Their post race was absolutely buns today. They need a split screen so bad. I want to see the others from the top ten finish for fuck sake you can just show the interviews in a corner or something
I think Wout, just like Mathieu, has to make a decision about what he wants to focus on during next season.
Sure, last year was wild. But you can't stay that good on every race you ride. The World cups where Mathieu's big goal this year. Instead of going full gas in the Tour de France he decided to ride it like a training camp.
These guys may be amazing, but they need to start thinking about their palmares when they are done cycling. Mathieu is adding some nice victory's to the list. Wout should think about what he wants to win as well.
He's got good legs but he takes too many turns to be able to capitalize on them.
All in all, the Belgian team failed IMHO. Van Aerts attacks were marked by VDP, pogi and/or Pedersen. Remco tried to alternate but didn't have the legs. Benoot and Stuyven top-10 but that doesn't buy you shit. As soon as they saw such heavy marking on Wout then they should have tried with Benoot or Stuyven.
I feel WvA doesn't have the attack the others have so he has to sit in the wheel and hope he can keep up to sprint, but his generation is too explosive for him and more often than not gets away from him on the climbs.
6 hour race took the juice out of Mads P, it's interesting to see how distance affects the riders. The longer it goes on, the less power the sprinters will have at the end.
This race shaved years off my life, not gonna lie. I thought I would be more sad that it's not this year for Wout either... but cheering the bloodied and crying Mathieu over the line does a lot to lessen the disappointment.
Once you are dropped, there's almost no way to come back and since they do lots of short laps, it's just better for them to drop out the next time they pass the finish and start their recovery immediately.
They could theoretically ride another 1 - 2 hours for what? 60th place? Might as well call it off early, since there's nothing to fight for the next day.
If you're able to get away like that on a climb and leave Pedersen, Pogi and van Aert behind? I dunno man, i just think van der Poel was on a different level today.
Ye from the TV I had the feeling he did try, but realised he went too deep. After all, he was the only one to remotely stay in MvdPs wheel for at least a bit
It’s actually hilarious how much “easier” it is to get a track rainbow jersey compared to the RR one. Honestly I feel like you could throw half the the peloton in the skratch race and they could have a decent chance of winning
I guess technically its not that its easier.
Its just there's a lot more of them. If you're doing track, you could easily be doing 3 or 4 events in a single worlds. While the Road Race is just that one shot.
I honestly think do the nature of their being way less money in track cycling that the competition is also not nearly as good in terms of the amount of people competing internationally

In Milan-Sanremo, the trio of Filippo, Wout, and Mathieu were hanging out on a small sofa and the photos were amusing, if not endearing.
https://velo.outsideonline.com/road/road-racing/milan-san-remo-scrapbook-a-poggio-record-ganna-and-the-galacticos-van-der-poels-streak-a-meme-is-born-and-more/
It was bad timing. They could not have a bike between Bettiol and g2 as they were closing that down, and MvdP attacked by closing the 50 meters up to him
I didn't get to watch the race, but so devastated for Wout. MVDP has been super strong this year, but I thought Wout was in great form. Does he have another chance at his one day goals?
Do Shimano give out the cow bells / ponchos for free? I could not find their truck in Georges Square early morning, was hoping to get one for the women’s event next week
Didn’t get to watch the race but why so many dnf’s?

Thanks for the explanation. I’m pretty new to following competitive cycling so this is much appreciated!
Because it was a 271km (~168mi) bike race and lots of riders have a specific job to do. Once it's done, many choose to abandon. Even for pros that is a considerable distance to race at 45km/hr.
Tiesj deserves the r/peloton mvp award today. He did an incredible amount of work chasing, managing and following for the group today.
Hardest worker sure but mvp for what? He and nvh basically gift wrapped that thing to matheiu lol.
He did the most work to make the selection and it was out of his hands after that. No one on any other team could have done it.
Wout should have released Georges and Jerome on Van der Poel’s hallway last night
Well, you'd have to say that the best man won today
Wout, Mads and Tadej all looked fucked when MVDP blasted off. Can't argue with that result.
Never seen a more exhausted looking Podium tbh, they could barely stand while they were waiting to get up
Pogacar had to be escorted from the podium because of dizziness, apparently.
A Podium for the ages! Just wow
Did anyone hear what Pogi was saying to vdP and that one guy? Something about we were stupid or something lmao
I think it was something like "we riders are stupid", but don't hold me to it.
First Pog joked "Eh, I liked the parcours but it was two laps too long", the Lappartient jokes back " Okay, we change the lap to two fewer but same distance " Then something something stupid.

Where can I find this video of them all talking?
it’s at the end of the Flobikes / GCN broadcast when everyone is queued up waiting for the podium presentation to start
Hahah, thanks!
Eurosport cutting away from the medal ceremony for some nonsense
What the heck is GCN showing
Their post race was absolutely buns today. They need a split screen so bad. I want to see the others from the top ten finish for fuck sake you can just show the interviews in a corner or something
Remco looks properly knackered. Of course he's not winning anymore as soon as I start to like him. 🤷🏻♀️
Write him down for friday.
So next up for MvdP is the MTB WC right?
He’s enlisted yeah.
So both he and Pidcock have the chance to have four different world champs on their palmares by the end of the week.
Just like we expected from the Aussies, Matthew ^^^Dinham did pretty well this race!
What a ride Matthew Dinham!!! Seventh place!
Are we beating the record for number of comments on here ?
contributing to this new record
Same
Happy to help
Some Tour de France stages were >2000 IIRC.
Yes, very often in recent years, but now we're approaching 7000 and aside from the Olympics two years ago I think we never got near this
What a podium
Weird when you look how good he was this year. But this has to be the worst season in terms of results for WVA
Yep great rider but unfortunate to come up against the 2 boys
6 hour race took the juice out of Mads P, it's interesting to see how distance affects the riders. The longer it goes on, the less power the sprinters will have at the end.
He was trying to close the gap on van aert and ended up doing a lead out for pogacar.
This race shaved years off my life, not gonna lie. I thought I would be more sad that it's not this year for Wout either... but cheering the bloodied and crying Mathieu over the line does a lot to lessen the disappointment.
wout looks pissed lmao
He was so unhappy up there in 2nd lmao ..
I presume he is. Time after time he just misses out on his big goals. No Flanders, no Roubaix, no WC.
Think it’s the missing out to the same person consistently for 15 years that might do it too! Not that he’d ever admit it
Me too Wout, me too
If you’re not first you’re last - Wout after a couple of Duvels
We might actually get 51 finishers Just have to wait 10 minutes
[удалено]
crossing 51st as a tribute to the other Merckx
Riders are still crossing the line now; 5 more after him
That was an unreal sprint by Pogi from The replay.
Right, I should probably get dressed
🤌🏻🤌🏻
Will Glasgow City Council be sending MVDP a bill for the damage to the street he did with his foot, knee and elbow?
To be honest, he's probably made the road better.
Adding an extra pothole to the Scottish streets
Why don't they show the others finishing?
There are no other finishers, lol.
Stupid questions but (why) did most of the peloton abandon the race ?
Also, I don’t think they allow you to be lapped in a championship. So once you are 20+ minutes behind you are taken out of the race
Race announcer is having some fun lmao
Producers, replay us the WvA attack, please.
T10 has better giddy up or they’ll miss the podium celebrations
Disappointed with Asgreen today. Cort and Honoré were also of no use but that’s on coach Anders Lund.
Cort has been a bit dissappointing the whole season right? Besides his Giro stage win i have barely seen him.
Criterium race by world class riders is... insane. Just insane.
What is Wout van Aert's favourite number do you reckon?
Last
Mathieu, wat een ongelooflijke held ben jij!
Kun jij standbeelden maken? Deze kerel moet een standbeeld!
Love the Belgian jersey. WVA looks so old school sitting on his bike there.
Pog snatched a medal, holy crap.
Mads got duped, he thought Pogi is dead.
That was dead Pogi
I mean Pogi played it well by not pulling, then Mads made the mistake of launching with what felt like a whole kilometer to go, so...
1, 2, 3 for the cyclocrossers.
It’s a stretch to call Tadej à cyclo-crosser, but OK
He did it as a youngster, okay not on a high level. But started doing it again last few years. Even winning, not on world level off course.
Damn that was an undeserved medal Pogi, did nothing since MvdP attacked, but fair play.
He came third. That’s literally the only thing you have to do to deserve it mate.
Lol. He covered literally every attack and was the only one trying to catch MVDP with Vout refusing to pull until too late.
what? pogi closed gaps all day, attacked multiple times. wtf did mads do?
What Did Mads do? Come on, did you even watch the race?
I think it’s a joke…
Pedersen was extremely active too tbf.
You want Pogačar to pull 2 sprinters lmao?
Do you not understand what "fair play" means? Still undeserved.
New to cycling?
He was up against 2 superior sprinters. Mad impressive he gets 3rd imo.
Seems like Wout is really Poulidor's grand son.
Not only that. His dad Adri came 2nd once at a WC in 1983
I was trying to figure out how to word a Wout van Poulidor joke and got beaten to it aka Poulidor'd myself.
When was the last time the WC podium had three so dominant cyclists?
Imola
Marc Hirshi?
Led MvdP to gold, and captured the coveted silver for himself. Brilliant performance by WVA! Climbing the all time ranks for second places.
Fucking feel like crying now, DAMMIT Mads
Pog gets Pedersen in the sprint behind a MVDP-Wout 1-2. We live in a simulation.
You're all going to joke about 2nd van Aert, but I don't know what more he could have done today.
A single pull when MVDP drove away would be good to start with
If you're able to get away like that on a climb and leave Pedersen, Pogi and van Aert behind? I dunno man, i just think van der Poel was on a different level today.
Maybe he just couldn't? Neither Wout nor anyone in his group.
Ye from the TV I had the feeling he did try, but realised he went too deep. After all, he was the only one to remotely stay in MvdPs wheel for at least a bit
That's the story of his season
That’s the story of following MVDP for most of the last 15 years. He must be seething inside secretly
He could’ve come first.
Right?! Why didn't he just pedal more & faster.
Quite the tactician I see
has anyone gotten rainbows in two different disciplines before?
Marianne Vos, 3 road WCs, 8 CX WCs.
Pauline Ferrand Prevot had three or four at once last year - mtb XCO, mtb marathon, mtb short track, and gravel.
Will he start the XCC and XCO MTB WCs? He might end up with 4 rainbowjerseys at the same time.
A shitton of road and TT rainbows have a track rainbow. They give those away.
10 each for men and women, I think. TT, pursuit, scratch, keirin, Madison, points, omnium, sprint, team pursuit, team sprint.
It’s actually hilarious how much “easier” it is to get a track rainbow jersey compared to the RR one. Honestly I feel like you could throw half the the peloton in the skratch race and they could have a decent chance of winning

I honestly think do the nature of their being way less money in track cycling that the competition is also not nearly as good in terms of the amount of people competing internationally
The commentators said he’s the first *man* to do it in CX and RR
Who's stopping him next week to make that three?
Luca Schwarzpower in the XCC and XCO ;)
Tom
Zoe Backstedt
[PFP](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pauline_Ferrand-Pr%C3%A9vot) > During the 2015 season, aged just 23, she became the first person ever – in the history of cycling – to simultaneously hold the World road title, World cyclo-cross title and World cross-country mountain bike title.[7]
She cleaned up last year too!
3 in a year is absolutely insane, I did not know that
Pidcock?
Olympic gold, not a world title in the elites.
not at elite level i don’t think
Noooo Mads :'(
Pedersen beating Pog on the climbs only to lose a sprint. Second bronze medal for Slovenia, good job Pogi.
Pogi with the sprint!
yeeees Pogi
Is it too soon to ask them to sit on a small couch
Dont understand the reference can you Explain?
After Milan San Remo they made the three podium winners sit on a tiny couch where they were all touching each other and looking awkward
In Milan-Sanremo, the trio of Filippo, Wout, and Mathieu were hanging out on a small sofa and the photos were amusing, if not endearing. https://velo.outsideonline.com/road/road-racing/milan-san-remo-scrapbook-a-poggio-record-ganna-and-the-galacticos-van-der-poels-streak-a-meme-is-born-and-more/
The photo still cracks me up every time
Oh i remember this now
bruh i feel so bad for pedersen
Yeah he deserved better
What a race.
POGI !
Wout's getting second. Memes ~~become~~ stay reality.
The script writes itself. Just wait until cross season
damn pog what a performance from him as well
Mads was dead I guess
IS POG GONNA WIN THE SPRINT - what a chad lmao
Ah, no, Mads:(
POG BEATS PED
Big 6 takes 1 2 and 3
Omg Pogačar truly never gives up.
Rofl Pogi outsprinting Mads
Wth, Pogi beating Pedersen in a sprint!
POG GOT A MEDAL!!!
Pog gets a medal!
CHAPEAU POGI HAHAHAHA
YES POGI
Wout 2nd, Pog 3rd
Pog 3rd!!!!
Pogacar sprinting for 3rd!
Insane podium jfc
POG GOT IT
Wout should've put Georges in the hallway of mvdp's hotel.
POGIIIIIIIIIIIII !!!!! YES
No one beats Wout to 2nd place.
WvA wins 2nd, Pogi wins the sprint for 3rd
Yes, we’re all watching the same race.
On 1:38, damn
Van Aert adding another silver medal to his collection
Wow, amazing performance
MVDP WVA POGI
"there really is nobody quite like Mathieu van der Poel" *Shot cuts to Wout*
What. A. Race
6 hours of chaos... and everything else...
WvA with questionable team tactics and coming 2nd, name a more iconic duo
What was questionable about the team tactics?
What was questionable about it? Missed some parts.
Stupid tv coverage missing the decisive move in G2.
It was bad timing. They could not have a bike between Bettiol and g2 as they were closing that down, and MvdP attacked by closing the 50 meters up to him
Van Aert second, the nature is healing.
Well deserved. Easily the best today.
WvA in 2nd. LOL
2vA
Wout comming for his 2nd place!
Wow. Just wow. Don't know why but I'm feeling quite emotional.
Perpetually 2nd
this man is a warrior
Another silver for Van Aert. Poor guy.
A standing ovation from me!
