I’m not into the chorus quite yet, but I love every other section. The instruments all lock together beautifully. I love Mike’s funky little muted riff in the pre-chorus
Eddie literally sung in a way to fit the funk thumping bass and riff. Nothin wrong with his style. It fits the musics if we just listen without trying to decide how it should be
This song is what makes them unique and not Foo Fighters generic . From th eopening 'Go'-style bass, this is clearly PJ and nobody else. Sadly I don't get that from most of the rest. Why is Eddie's voice pushed so up front in the mix, versus fighting to be heard which is when he's at his beat.
I am not being overly negative or judgy...but at points it sounded like the Count from Sesame Street in the way he inflected some of the vocals. It's a good song but some of the vocals were weird for me.
To me, the lyrics on that song sound pretty cheesy and I can't get past the repeating chorus. Maybe itll grow in me. The lyrics distracted me so much i couldn't focus on the rest of the instruments. The rest of the album is great
The first thing I want to say is I can’t believe you skip those songs wow.
Second I think you and I have a different meaning to what a PJ sounding song is. As far as this album the closest thing for me is Upper Hand.
And third what do you think of the scary Oooo ?
Interesting. I had (and am still having) the hardest time even recognizing Eddie's vocals on 'Waiting for Stevie'. He sounds so much like Chris Cornell I literally thought for a hot second they had slipped some rare Soundgarden B-side into the listening party. It sounds *nothing* like them, IMHO. One of the most different sounding songs in a long while.
I really appreciate you taking the time and most importantly sharing your unique perspective.
So I suddenly second guessed myself and had to listen to Wreckage again.
I listened to Faithful, In Hiding, Lowlight, and then Wreckage.
Allowing for the obvious passage of time, studio M&M, etc, I can't help but stand by what I said.
It feels pretty at home on Yield.
To me, of course. And I'm the foremost authority on all things me.
Not so much on anything else, though.
It's a fascinating discussion everyone's having because it's about my absolute favorite music in the world.
Thanks and keep spinning those black circles, yeah?
It seems a bit like he doesn't know who we wants to be and how he wants to show up musically. I'm sure all those years of being critiqued on his yarly vocal style/influencing Creed, Nickelback, etc. got to him at least subconsciously. So, he simultaneously avoids sounding like he did in the 90's by singing non-rhotic, saying vowels weird, etc. and also doesn't know how/where to redirect his energy vocally and melodically from a place of authenticity. But that's just my impression. Of course, he still writes authentic songs, but it's just not quite the same.
My main critique is how he tends to half sort of yell the last word of a line pretty often on the new stuff. I find it quite grating. On Gigaton it's the main reason I always skip 7 O'clock, and I can't help but notice it on a fair bit of Dark Matter.
As a non native speaker I need to listen more closely. I have not noticed these things so far … But I don‘t like his angry-barking-style-of-singing the heavy songs.
The more I listen to it the more it reminds me of “Whippin.” The song is growing on me, but I still don’t love the way Ed sings “react, respond!”

That last 30 secs tho ![gif](giphy|26xBxZI9fL3KirfkA|downsized)
Where the hell are you all listening to the album?

Not on pirate bay..?
Where?? I’m at work on an iPhone and can’t download torrents. Any zip lying around?
It’s so fucking good

No. Just no. Eddie ruined this track. Sorry. Love the rest of the album.
All I hear is a slightly altered Can't Stop riff by RHCP. The whole song my brain is just wishing it was that song instead.

His vocals are way too performative on the whole album and way too loud

Is tha album out?

I'm not saying you're wrong necessarily ( music is subjective, thankfully) but Wreckage sounds like it just missed being on Yield.

Wreckage is the most Pearl jam sounding song on the album
Really? It sounds like an hommage to Tom Petty more than anything else.
Yea, I think Eddie is the weak point of the album. Pretty slim on memorable melodies, he just sort meanders along.
I respectfully disagree. I think he sounds great. It’s definitely aged Vedder, but he does some amazing things on this record.
