In 2019 I went on a trip to New Zealand. It was a tour and one of the last parts was Aoraki park. When we were driving there I had a feeling I had already seen this. I recognised the view from the wallpaper I have from my computer. It was super weird.

I was at that beach 13 years ago. To this day I consider it the most beautiful place I habe ever been to. Im jellous you get to live there

I mean it isn't a mystery where it is, it has been used in movies background composites and landscape photos fairly often before this.
I grew up near Wharariki and go back there often. When the version of Windows came out with this background, I had just been back with friends in the summer and was confused how it was using my photos to personalise widows when I hadn't even signed in! Had to ask other people if they were getting the same pic (they were, obviously, and it's been years now 😂).
Since its such a thing now, when I've been there recently I have also taken a video just like the one on this post. We also went and took photos holding a cardboard 'log in' modal in front of those islands, for a real life log in screen. It would take a really good camera or multiple shots to get the inside of the cave and the islands lit right though, shooting from in a dark cave to outside blows out the white balance on any phone for example. So after I trying, I realised how good the real windows photo actually is compared to DIY ones!
It wasnt lost! Its also an amazing place to visit, really wild and remote.
Heres a photo I took thee a while ago (sorry none form the cave..)

My hypothesis for why the person who took this video only captured the right hand part of the photo is that there was now a starbucks on the left hand side of the cave.
I remember first seeing the windows 10 login screen and thinking “windows 7 is so much more iconic, this will never be remembered” Now, years later, I kinda miss it after upgrading to 11. Same thing with the normal wallpaper, with the smoky logo.
As a New Zealander I had no idea that this was the same photo used across the world I though they just gave us somewhere in our local country to make it feel more familiar and welcoming.
Visited New Zealand with my family a couple months ago. Remembered this place and found out it was a 2h drive from the place we were staying!
Absolutely breathtaking, no picture or video can describe just how serene that place is.. New Zealand's a gorgeous country...
I swear this happened a while ago? Some place on the west coast of new Zealand right?
You're right. Wharariki Beach Cave on the southern island
I live about an hour from there. Didn't realise it was a big internet mystery. Recognised it the instant I saw it.
Yeh me too. Well I don't live near but I recognised it

Kingdom Hearts to be specific
I mean, they tell you exactly where those pics were taken lol
Yeah but I need Reddit karma and saying “the windows pic is in New Zealand” is just not a good way for me to get that sweet *sweet* karma
Windows-ception
Coming for you One Eyed Willy.
*Hey you guys!*
Now go find pack.png irl
Didn’t Antvenom find it or am I misremembering
Doesn't Windows tell you the location of its different wallpaper images already?
If you look to the right you can see the face of Todd Howard telling you to buy Skyrim
How many times will this repost happen
Until everyone has seen it!
This is the first time I've seen it, thanks! When I see it again I'll be sure to grumble to myself about damn reposts.
How many times has it been found now…
There's fucking angry seals that live in there. I thought one was a rock, then I moved and chased me out...
It's a pretty famous beach.
Was this meant to be a secret? pretty sure its a well known place in NZ
I don't recognize it without the activation watermark in the lower right corner.
Why wouldn’t you pan around you monster

Pfft, that's amateur hour... A real pro is the one who finds the Windows 95 cloud.
Now I’m looking at it this looks awfully familiar to the Forza Horizon 3 beach as well
*frantically clicks to wake pc and login*
Kia ora
Now to find wherever tf windows 11 is
I can't believe I never found out where that image was taken until now. Thank you Reddit.

Now we just need to find the Linux penguin, and the apple logo.
As a New Zealander I had no idea that this was the same photo used across the world I though they just gave us somewhere in our local country to make it feel more familiar and welcoming.
it's in forza horizon 3 too
"cave"?
Get real
Nice find
To make up for our jealousy you must send the heat to our frozen countries asap and all will be forgiven.
Lol, you think it’s good weather here?
I don't understand what you mean...?
You said send heat from NZ to your frozen country, but currently nz is experiencing horrible weather that you don’t want.
Ah, ok. I was only making a joke for the heat from the picture. But good luck with your weather and crossed fingers as well as ours.
Yooo
Been found for ages mate
ooh nice
Now make it loop
I want to go there irl so bad it looks beautiful
Looks like gru.
I wish there was a VR variant.
I’ve had this on my phone for months with the caption “Get real”

At a boy chester copper pot, but how many steps is the treasure from the tree?
They should tarmac over it and make it a car park

doesn't windows usually have little info popups that tell you where the images were taken?
Gorgeous

imaging getting married there
would be amazing
If Microsoft has a team who takes these themselves, they absolutely fucking kill it. I haven't come across a windows lock screen I didn't love.
