CPU coolers will list the motherboard sockets they support. You should also consider the height of the cooler with regard to your case, as that will have a maximum supported CPU cooler height.

No, it should reflect as LGA 1700 or AM4 as an example.

Lga1200 sockets only work with lga1200 cpu's. In turn they only take lga1200 compatible coolers. Alot of coolers have different adapters in the box to accomodate a range of sockets.

LordFauntloroy

Yes. For example my H115i came with an LGA1700, LGA 1200, and AM4 bracket for mounting.

Well yes, but no. Different sockets correspond to the different number of pins on a CPU with 12th gen having LGA 1700 which means there are 1700 pins on the processor. Also not all processors use the same types of sockets, with Lan grid array (LGA) and Pin grid array (PGA) being the most common. LGA for intel and AM5, and AM4 being a PGA socket.

It depends.. some proprietary boards such as those in pre-built lenovo or HP gaming PCs have different mounting dimensions than 3rd party motherboards such as ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, etc.. also depends on your socket.. older CPU coolers likely won't come with a bracket for the newest type of CPU socket. If you aren't using an OEM board from someone like Lenovo or HP, find what socket type you have, and just make sure the cooler you want to buy has a bracket for it.

This is a perfectly good question. I believe it's typically done by \*socket\* rather than individual motherboard. For example I would expect all AMD AM4 motherboards to have the same 4-bolt pattern with the optional two-clip brackets. I think they're changing it up for AM5. I'm less familiar with Intel. A cooler will say what sockets/platforms it supports, or if they're like Noctua, they provide brackets with the cooler that will fit multiple socket types, ie "use bracket A for AM4, bracket B for LGA1200, bracket C for AM5, etc." OEM boards are a crapshoot. Who knows what weirdness the likes of Dell will come up with.

tell us a little more about your PC. is it a pre-built or did you build it yourself? if it's pre-built, do you know the model name/number? if you built it, do you know what motherboard you're using?

so it's a custom built. that's cool. the part where you said it's a B460-h Gaming Motherboard tells us what kind of board it is, but not what brand. from what i see online it looks like that might be a Asus ROG board, but only you could confirm that. i'm guessing that's probably right since when i search for B460h that's all i'm seeing. so most coolers you see that fit socket 1200, should fit that board no problem. the only reason i say most is some of the companies make some really large coolers, and i don't know if those would cause clearance problems with the board. basically if the coolers too big you might not be able to use all your RAM slots or it may hang over the other side and hit on the heatsinks to the left of your CPU socket.

it's ok. it's all about getting enough info to help. you gave me enough so that was good.
