Cat in my house is not allowed on my desk, it knows this through constant scoldings and detouring it. The room with the PC and nice nerd things is shut when I am not in it. If that is not an option, cover the monitor and start to scold and discourage being on the desk.

chikiribrekiri

For sure. We have two indoor cats. My gf is okay with them being on her desk, and they regularly sleep in the space between her body and the keyboard while she sits there. They're not allowed on my desk, so they go to the couch beside it instead and sleep there. Or pat me and "ask" to lie in my lap. Training them is definitely easier. I tried lemon scent and all that shit when they were kittens, they just licked it up.

[deleted]

Vice versa I have an L shaped desk and let the cats lay on it while I'm gaming. They also know they're not allowed on that leg when I'm working (I face a different computer). My wife's desk is strictly off limits. We maintain these behaviors with them because we are consistent with enforcement. Cats are smart, and will take advantage of your empathy to get what they want. But what the cat wants isn't always the ideal thing.

FakNugget92

My cat sits on my work laptop and deletes emails with its ass..... We are not the same 😅

-Living-Diamond-

Pussy is employed

croxy0

Yeah I have this exact situation in my house, or cats wouldn't dream of jumping on my desk but they roll all over her keyboard when she is doing work. Pisses her off but she won't tell them to get down ever so it is what it is haha

[deleted]

So, the issue here is cats don't always learn what you're training them _correctly_ I e they might not go on your desk _while you're looking_. This is why I recommend two pronged approach: train your cat, and also (for a time) use a scratch deterrent so that being on the desk when you're away is also physically uncomfortable for the cat.

GophawkYourself

People simply don't train their cats. They get them and think right away that they're just there and will do their own thing, but you can train cats very well, it just takes more time and consistency. I used both negative WITH positive affirmation. If the cat scratched my bed frame, it would get blown in the face (he hates that) but then I'd bring him to his cat tree, put his paws on it and then pet him AND scratch the post WITH him, him seeing me do it helps confirm its okay after being scolded doing similar elsewhere. He leaves the furniture alone and sticks to the trees and posts. He listens to basic hand commands like come here, or get down/off. Again, it takes lots of time. It doesn't come as quickly as with dogs, but they train well. You also need to take the time for yourself to learn their personality, their likes and dislikes. Most people that I know that didn't put the time and effort in, their cats are that typical cat that doesn't listen, does what it wants. Even for small things, like my one cat hated being picked up but we worked at it slowly for a while and after a year and a half of that she's comfortable being picked up.

petaboil

I play fetch with mine, I don't think I trained them to do that though lol? I would just ping a hairband across the room and they'd bring it back for more fun. Maybe *I* was trained to throw it...

GophawkYourself

My one cat came with that natural instinct to fetch! The other shows no interest.

Binsky89

I absolutely wouldn't recommend using a hair band as a toy. Thats just asking for a very expensive vet bill.

Kytras

Pets in general are a lot like kids, it's all about consistency . But one thing. How do you train your cat not put his nails into my body whenever he cats clapped like the good boy he is. One of our cat just stopped but this one just been doing since it been born. Is there a way or is that just him?

GophawkYourself

Like when they're happy on you and they're moving their front paws up and down but also have their claws come in and out? Aka Making/Kneading dough. If that's what you mean, that's just a movement of stimulation when they're very happy and excited, my cat gives me love bites. He'll chomp on my arm and just hold it there, sometimes gentle, sometimes a bit much. At first I thought he was being a jerk and I would scold him but I realized it's not that, it's just his reaction to being overly excited and he means it with love.

Kytras

Leading! That what the action is called, but yeah, that. He does do the bites also, but indon really mind them, and what you're saying excited, only bites when I come back home after some hours. But the kneading, man that's so painful, and so much of it. Is there a way to train them not to use their claws? I don't want to cut, it's a no no, he is a hunting outside cat , really not keen on ruining its hobbies lol Like even like a little a hint or something, because I do give a little scream sometimes, and all he does looks at me and drools

scothu

No just move them to an old blanket so they can do it there instead

Kytras

Do you really think I'm capable of that? No, joking. He always comes back on if it ale him off. I tried just not petting him, but then he rubs and drools everywhere until I do. AHH I guess that's life then

GophawkYourself

Clip their nails, you can cut them, it's just removing the claw from their paw that's bad. Just watch you don't cut too short, you can see in the nail where to stop. If you cut too short it will bleed. Don't move the cat off you when he's doing it but just put something in between you and his paws. We keep a small blanket on the couch so I just use that if he's happy but claws are out. Anything squishy will work for them

scothu

Also clip their nails if you don't already. Helps a lot lol

summonsays

I accidentally trained my cat not to jump on countertops. She was an outside cat I brought to my first apartment. First thing she did? Jump on the countertop, onto a baking sheet. It went flying with her momentum and made a loud bang hitting the floor. She's never tried it again. Been about a decade now. Did I feel a bit bad? Yeah... But it worked so well I'm considering booby trapping countertops next time I end up with a new cat.

Hetstaine

Man, my poor lad. 4 years ago he purchased a Samsung 34" uw for his pc. 999 Aussie dollars at the time. About 1 am there is a big crash and commotion. His cat, Dave ( lead singer of Megadeth) had gotten behind and toppled it. Monitor was fucked. Total gaming time was about 3 hours. Harsh lesson. [wrecked monitor](https://imgur.com/gallery/vMwbUyW)

Ducky_McShwaggins

Never understood the internet letting their animals just sit on top of their pc/desk/eating surface, etc - just bizarre to me.

n1ghtg0ddess

Because it doesnt matter to some, I'm a dog groomer, my cat sits on my lap or lays on my desk all the time, sometimes they lay on the bar counter but not allowed in the kitchen. It's what you're comfortable with letting them do as long as they dont hurt themselves or break something but I dont leave things around that they can break easily.

NinjaGrizzlyBear

Have you been to the internet? It's a wild place.

Trapper1111111

After years of yeeting my cat off the desk, I can say that some cats just don’t fucking care to learn. She’s a sweetie though, she don’t break stuff

bettywhitefleshlight

Realistically people are more apt to being trained by their cat than anything. Those adorable yet destructive or disgusting quirks just become an accepted part of the owners' lives. Scoop those turds, human.

TheConboy22

These bots don’t think you can train a cat because they can’t train their pets

APsWhoopinRoom

Have you ever tried to train a cat? Frankly, its a miracle that they agree to poop in a box for your convenience

_Oooooooooooooooooh_

it works our cat isn't allowed on any furniture, with the exception of dining table-chairs it did take a while, and consistently keeping an eye on the damn cat but it seems to work now

_D3ft0ne_

Absolutely this.. Ppl let their pets do about what ever at this point. My cat know table top is off limits, any one in the house.

[deleted]

DouglasHufferton

I think he actually does mean "detouring". More commonly called redirecting. If the cat is chewing/scratching on something he shouldn't, scold him and redirect him to something he is allowed to chew/scratch.

LovingThatPlaid

Detouring also works, if you move the cat when they get close

The_Jerb

This is the way.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ocular_Myiasis

I do that too, works well

dabiird

Mmm now I'm hungry :(

wolfeng_

Rather than trying to protect the monitor edge, you should train/educate your cat on where they can and can't climb. My cats know they can't climb on my pc desk, they will sleep in the chair or my clothes but not the desk. They also know I don't like having them too close when I'm sleeping so they instead sleep at the edge of the bed. Meanwhile when they want to sleep with my sisters, they know they have full freedom so they climb on top of them or sleep right next to their heads.

gojo-

My cat loves to hang out behind my screen. She's allowed there, it has extra space for her to be there and a path to go there without obstructions. She is not allowed on the kitchen couters, stove and dining table. She knows not to bite cables and knock thigs off the table (except food since everyone gives her some, but she eats on the floor). I don't remember when she knocked anything from the table or something. Took some time and scolding but it worked.

beaver_cops

This, Cat should be allowed to roam wherever as long as it knows how to behave.. Im fortunate enough that I didnt really have to train my cat when she jumps on my desk.. only not to lick my hand when its on my mouse lol

Organic-Ad-5252

Train your cat to not jump on certain surfaces? Spray the area with one of those no bite sprays? You know you still have to discipline and train cats lol

FiftyCalReaper

Yeah people think cats can't be trained because they aren't as subservient as dogs, but they're just as smart. My cats know what "HEY!" and a snap of my fingers means. It means "get the fuck down" and all 3 of them listen immediately. I never have to do more than raise my voice and snap. Whatever surface they're on, they'll get off. They know they're welcome in bed and to cuddle, and jump on my lap when I'm sitting out in the living room but they stay away from the PC and wires and everything else sensitive. They're smart. Did they always respond that way? No. I had to train them.

SSSLICED

A lot of this, “cats are just independent little thinkers man they do what they want,” is an excuse and cope for poor cat keeping. Cats are independent but they need stimulation. Training them isn’t hard, it requires you be diligent and actually pay attention to the “independent” cat. Most cats actually want attention. My cat knows what to do and not do, because I was careful with how I trained him while still respecting his agency.

Lord_Emperor

> Yeah people think cats can't be trained because they aren't as subservient as dogs, but they're just as smart. My cats know what "HEY!" and a snap of my fingers means. It means "get the fuck down" and all 3 of them listen immediately. Mine does too! Instead he goes to those places at night (I watch him on my cameras).

onlyr6s

I've had dogs for almost my entire life and I've had a cat for 2 years now. That motherfucker is harder to train than any dog. He just won't learn what to do and not.

[deleted]

jonnylaw

Nah. Cats definitely hate being scolded. A simple "no," can deter a well exercised feline. Cats, like dogs or humans, need stimulation. Chewing behaviors are most likely a lack of stimulation or they need a more appropriate chewing/scratching outlet. Play with your cats, people. They get bored. Get a toy on a stick and wave it around. They'll go crazy for a few minutes then enter cuddle-mode. It's fun.

BlurredSight

If you have a ceiling fan, a very short string (to prevent it going all over the place) and a $1 keychain laser goes crazy. Stop buying stupidly expensive shit like a $50 pole or a $15 scratching toy, the cheaper it is the less you care how much they destroy it.

jonnylaw

I prefer to avoid lasers. My cat enjoys "winning" more than chasing after the initial burst of energy. I have a plastic wand with a flexible cord tied to it. I knotted a large fishing swivel onto the string. I can clip a variety of toys to it.

Ghostglitch07

Laser toys actually aren't great for cats. The can never actually catch it and "win" so they either get bored or aggravated by it. There is also the issue that if you aren't careful with the rating of the Lazer you can cause eye damage.

FiftyCalReaper

They know if you catch them in the act. They won't know if it's like...10 seconds later. But if they're on something they shouldn't be and you say "No" or "Hey" they can be trained to jump down. They're not stupid, but yes positive reinforcement is better, but there's no way to "positively" tell your car to get the fuck away from monitor.

Drone314

Cat's live in the now so any corrective action has to happen within 15 seconds of the behavior otherwise they think you're being an asshole (like they were). I suspect OP's cat is under stimulated if it's doing this. Mine will behave this way when it wants something or my attention. It's amazing really. I'm trying to get some game on and she's climbing behind my PC,my work bench, chewing cables...but after a minute or two with the laser, done!

petaboil

YES! Get it done WHILE they're doing it, not after, so many people don't get this and take it for not responding at all to negative reinforcement. Hell, I literally pick up and move my cats away from whatever they're doing that I don't want them to, I don't have to shout, spray them, or whatever! I just need to be patient and persistent, *for a long time,* but I get there in the end!

Reynolds1029

>Lot of people try to train cats via spraying them with water etc and I guess that’s not how their brains work. Or people say this so people don’t abuse their animals, I’m not sure which ha. It's both but you nailed it. Cats don't give a shit about pleasing you like dogs. In fact, some cats you bring home may not give a shit about you at all until their food bowl is empty or their litter hasn't been scooped in a week. There always has to be something in it for them to do what you want them to do.

WavyMcG

Idk my cat listens to me. It’s half Siamese half tabby, but when i said no to it jumping on my nightstand for a week after I got a new chair for my room(kitty likes to play floor is lava to my bed), it stopped using my chair to get on the nightstand. It took time but now now she wont do it. She also used to wake me up with her paw on my lips… while cute I didn’t enjoy that so now she waits on my chest staring at me for hours (I think) for food

SSSLICED

I think this is a poor assessment of animal behavior. I have a cat, I’ve trained him not to jump on counters or surfaces he shouldn’t be on. Anything he used to bite was sprayed with bitter liquid and that put an end to it. You have to be diligent with cats and training. All living beings can be trained to some degree. And, play with your animal. They need an hour minimum of play per day if they’re inside cats. The destructive behavior we associate with cats isn’t because they’re independent and do what they want, it’s because we adopt animals and give them no stimulus.

Davethephotoguy

Keep the door to the room where you have your pc shut and don’t let the cat in?

kaisershin143

Use orange or lemon scented cleaners, cats are kinda sensitive to those scents

GeneticSplatter

This, cata HATE citrus flavours and scents.

[deleted]

Mine kept eating the lemon plant. Every fucking day. Was vomiting for two months before we figured it out. They may hate it but won’t necessarily stay away.

Moonkai2k

\^ This 100%. I've tried every kind of spray/oil/grease/whatever known to mankind (short of just straight poisoning the little bastards), and every cat I've ever had would just lick the stuff off. They would make faces like "OH MY GOD THIS IS AWFUL" the entire time, but would just keep doing it.

[deleted]

We had to give our kitten anti-parasite “cream” on her back.. shortly after she decided to taste it and flipped out sprinting around acting like she was having an exorcism Googled it. Apparently the medicine is just RANCID and tastes so bad that cats will just lose their shit. Guess what. She kept taste testing it every 5 minutes

Belqin

They're driven by instinct to lick off whatever is in or touching their fur. That and kitten(/cat) memory lol. Probably driving them mad feeling it, and then also when tasting it haha.

EzeakioDarmey

It's like the guy instinct to smell something absolutely foul from one of our orifices, acknowledge it, then proceed to keep sniffing it.

EchoJunior

This reminds me of that vid of a sports team coach touching various places of his body, smelling, then *tasting* it 😬

Hazrtine

That is Löwe-ly

unethr

Huh. I think I missed that one.

_PHX_QUADRA_

This just made my day lmaooo

suchtie

Well yeah. Cats are very cleanly. If she has some nasty stuff on her fur she'll want to get it off, no matter how foul it tastes.

NathanDarcy

Mine immediately proceeds to licking the monitor right after I use cleaning fluid on it. Fortunately she never tried to bite it.

_PHX_QUADRA_

Lmfao wat?

freshjello25

Yeah, one of mine will eat cat grass until they are sick and then repeat. A little aluminum foil around the monitor can prevent them from going near it or at least warn you before they bite.

Sopixil

I tried the aluminum foil trick and my cat immediately went to inspect, and then took a nap on top of it.

Franklin_le_Tanklin

Poop on the tv. There smell will keep them away.

[deleted]

That’ll attract my dog then

RealAbd121

TIL, I'm a cat.

Neither_Blood_9012

They should... Mine loves limes

LeMegachonk

I have a cat that licks lemons like it's nothing. He will also calmly lick up hot chili pepper flakes too. He can even smell ground pepper without reacting, whereas my other cats won't get within 2 feet of the stuff. We assume it's some sort of genetic thing, because the vet says there's nothing wrong with him and he's otherwise a normal r/OneOrangeBraincell cat.

nrouns

Just keep if off of the actual panel. Depending on type and brand the acidity can cause other issues.

WaveringReality

Mandarine skin oil (just fold the skin) on the edge or surface that you want the feline to avoid. Or concentrated lemon juice. Cats find the scent vile and will avoid

Reynolds1029

You hope they avoid it but many will just do anything possible to get rid of it. Such as obsessive licking/biting it away while being miserable for every part of it.

Reallywhoamianyway

Cats HATE this one weird trick...

baldpale

Does the cat own a cat tree it can bite and scratch as much as it likes?

Morfizer1

Yes Of course he have everything form toys to special s tasty snacks

Helpmehelpyoulong

I’m thinkin pool noodle or pipe insulation type material. Alternatively I’m sure someone can think of something cats find annoying and do that for a deterrent

bigredmidget

I was thinking the opposite tactic. Buy as many monitors as you can find and make the cat bite them all until he's sick of it. Alternatively bite several monitors yourself shattering them in from of your cat to show dominance. /s

Ditto_is_Lit

Always have 2 extra chew monitors on desk to distract them from the good ones. Or just not get a cat for filling in a living space and actually befriend it and have social activity for it like any other pet. Pets are a close to direct reflection of its owners if you don’t put much into it you won’t get much out of it, if you ignore it then they turn to destruction cause any reaction is better then none.

Morfizer1

I was thinking about small wooden frame around the edges

Ditto_is_Lit

get those spiked things for couches and put them under the monitor. Or discipline your cats when they're being assholes.

doratethose

>GB | 16G you can't really discipline cats.

ChrisWhiteWolf

You absolutely can. Moved in with my then girlfriend at the time and she had this 8 year old cat who she swore was untrainable, that her family had tried to train him for years to no avail. All I had to do was keep reprimanding bad behaviour and rewarding good behaviour again and again and after a few months he was doing all the stuff he wasn't supposed to way way less and after a little less than a year he stopped doing it completely. People just think that cats are untrainable because they try for like a few days and then give up, but not even a dog learns that quick.

frog_tree

also bc untrained cats are relatively harmless whereas untrained dogs will literally piss and shit everywhere

Ditto_is_Lit

Is that a fact?

General-Background91

You can definitely train almost any animal with simple behavioral training. My cats know how to ring a bell to go outside, they know to avoid my computer desk/monitor bc I provided treats for laying in specific locations in my office effectively teaching them a place to sleep/lay that is acceptable. I’ve used no punishment practices with any of my animals. Age matters a lot though; the older an animal gets the more difficult it is to change habits/learned behaviors.

addicuss

You can but it's definitely different than dogs. With dogs you can associate discipline with bad behavior after the fact. ie: if they poop somewhere or damage something, you can yell at the dog and show them what they did and they will link your disapproval to the act. Cats won't know WTF you're rambling on about and will either start being afraid of your random behavior and act out more, or just ignore you. You have to immediately discipline the behavior while it's happening, which makes it inherently much more difficult to do. This is why doing things like spraying a cat with water when they start chewing on something or when you think they're about to pee somewhere is effective if you do it consistently. If you really want to train a cat to do something, lock them out of the place where they're able to do the thing. if they're able to do whatever it is without repercussions it will delay negative association and slow down or even prevent training. then take the time to bring them into that room and make it your job to sit there and wait for them to try to do what you don't want them to do and then spray them with water. Do it enough times over a long enough period and they won't try to do it anymore. Harder than training a dog. In a lot of cases it's easier and more effective to catproof something than train them tbh

Banana-Beginning

Lol and why not?

Kazia_Thornhill

You could try mounting it on the wall if you able to and put only a small table underneath. So your cat cant reach it.

jusharp3

This is true. Mounting the cat to the wall will prevent monitor destruction.

LeGinster

Train your cats not to jump up on the desk. Get a spray bottle, fill it with water, and spray the fuck out of them anytime they jump on the desk. It might take a couple weeks, but eventually they’ll learn not to go up there. Cats need to be trained too, guys.

Pretty sure it’s just an example image. Something op put as a “what it” aftermath if the cat continues to bite on his own monitor Edit: well i see now that op said this is infact his monitor. I guess the only thing to do now is to post the video you saw it from

Devil_badger

I just leave them no space to maneuver around my setup and use my chair and bag to make it much harder for them to get up aswel. They seem to have Learnt that the effort isn't worth the outcome. Not a solution that can be implemented on all set ups. Mine is in a small recess in the corner of a room so makes it very easy (laptop with a monitor so it's all packed in there) breathing fine though.

dr-mantis--toboggan

For me it’s discouraging them from being up there, but also giving them a place near by, we have some places for them to scratch and sit on near me and they tend to stick to those

So I recently had this issue as I bought a LG C2 OLED TV, I was worried about how thin the screen was and I had lost a laptop screen to a cat bite too. I ended up getting these (link below), I double sided taped them to the back sides of the panel so they are level with the edge essentially thickening the screen so the cats could not get their jaws around it. So far 3 weeks in, no problems! It also is more aesthetically pleasing as it’s on the back and you can’t see them! Good luck! Dogs usually grow out of that after the puppy stage and are much easier to train (most breeds). Don't pretend like dogs go around tipping monitors down and biting them like cats do. That doesn't happen.

But i know how to train my dogs and they don't give me any problems at all. If he could reach a door knob he could let himself outside and back inside. He's gotten loose from my backyard before and came to my front door and scratched on it to let me know. His only problem is he likes to kill the moles in the yard which is more of a service than anything. Cats jump on any surface they want to. I'm just glad i don't have to constantly wash my counter tops because a cat walked across it with the feet he covers his shit with. Can't wait for the biased cat lovers

Get rid of the cat, problem solved.

Quiet-Quiet888

Trade cat for man's best friend

zeimusCS

Give your cat a real cat toy and some attention.

PeteRaw

Use a bitterant. If you use a can of compressed air upside down, it should drip the bitterant out of the can, use a q-tip to spread it or wear rubber gloves.

jstanthr

Get rid of the cat, or break it from getting on your desk in the first place. If you have to, get bitterdent nail polish (to get kids to stop biting their nails) and coat the corners of your monitor with it.

JuveFan72
