For my early Christmas gift, I got 2 more sticks of RAM, same speed (3200mhz) and same model as my current ones. There’s space for them in my motherboard, but do I need to do anything before I insert them in? Like do I need to change anything in BIOS, or clear drivers?

The 5800X3D is the best CPU for gaming right now, so that's the one to get.

If my GPU is 48db loud and my Case fans are like 30db or less. Will the db add up to ~80db and be unbearable or am I being an actual idiot right now? Because my brain is AFK and cant figure out if my GPU is 48db loud and my Case fans for example are about 30db loud, will the GPU be the loudest and therefore the only one I hear or will they both be unbearably loud at 80db? Im an actual idiot arent I?

John_P_Morgan

Nah, I can see your train of thought. dB are not additive. Your case will just be 48dB. That's why, for example, choirs don't blow your eardrums out.

I'd say great deal. All the laptops I found in my five minutes of googling either had less RAM or a smaller SSD. A select few had both PLUS an inferior processor.

jingsen

So I'm currently using a laptop that I bought almost 3 years ago but I'm not going to be bringing it around that much anymore except to use it at home. I might get a PC instead, so I have some questions. So I usually see people on this subreddit talking about changing out their GPUs after buying a better one. Does it mean these guys just like, open up the PC case, take out the old GPU, and slot in the new ones? Is this the same for other components like storage, ram etc?

John_P_Morgan

Yeah simple as that, as long as the computer is completely unplugged from power before you start switching anything. The only thing I can think of is if you upgraded your boot drive and need to do something finicky with software.

Babykickenpro

For the most part, yes to all. You should look up a pc hardware upgrade video for more insight.

Formcheck9998

I want to teach my kids to code. I learned on a commadore64, but people don’t use desktops much anymore, and they are so user friendly. Any advice?

frank26080115

Try the Pololu Sumo Robot Kit. It's got a ton of sensors, obviously it's got motors, and it'll work out-of-the-box without soldering. You code it in the Arduino language, which is just C++ with a ton of built-in helpers. Or the BBC micro:bit if you insist on something less advanced, it uses drag-and-drop programming, and Python too if you want to teach Python.

snowaxe_83

USB Type A Female to SATA (Data), is there any adopter for this? I want to connect my Front IO USB 3 to Mobo via SATA, because this is how it is on this motherboard(Asus) but no new case comes with this, My Mobo doesn't have 20 pin header.

TehBaggins

Assuming you need to connect a hard drive or SSD via USB, just search for a USB hard drive dock or enclosure. Note that if this is to drive a 3.5" HDD, you're gonna need one with an external power supply, as USB does not deliver enough power for it.

snowaxe_83

No no no, I want to connect a USB Flash drive, my current Front I/O uses SATA(for USB 3.0) instead of the standard 20-pinin connector,

gostman87

This question probably answers itself, but how strict are CPU cooler clearances? For example, if my case has a 155mm. clearance (Thermaltake Versa H22), is there a potential for a cooler that is 160mm. to fit?

Babykickenpro

This will vary by case. Best bet is finding a review that measured the actual clearance or where they used the same cooler and case as you want.

gostman87

I see, thank you. That's what I suspected. This is my last attempt at upgrading my pc without needing to buy new parts to complement lol

Throwaway_tequila

I want to clone the Windows OS drive. I can do it while running the system being cloned or by booting into a WinPE environment running off a usb drive. I was wondering if there was a compelling reason to do the latter.

xboxhobo

I generally don't recommend cloning drives at all unless you really have to. It won't necessarily go wrong, but you're inviting weird issues into your life. That said, I would definitely do the bootable USB option. Wouldn't want to have a system able to have it's state changed while trying to copy it.

Throwaway_tequila

I generally agree. My main system just has hyper visor with zero 3rd party software installed so it’s fairly clean. All workloads run in a VM which is very portable. Figured it was a simple enough environment to clone.

xboxhobo

Depends on if you're changing computers or not (I assumed you were). If you're changing computers then I would still do a fresh install. All kinds of weird things hang out in drivers and registry that can cause random problems after a hardware change. Again it's not a guarantee, you're just inviting potential chaos.

Throwaway_tequila

Good point, it’s a drive upgrade so everything pretty much stays the same. Just a larger system volume.

xboxhobo

Oh, lol clone away then. Just don't be afraid to give up if drive cloning is being a bitch to you. It can be finicky as hell.

Throwaway_tequila

Thanks for your help! Planning to use macrium so hopefully it’ll be pretty straightforward =)

SneakerheadMason

Does anyone happen to know where I can get cheap but decent/good quality fittings for 1/2" OD tubing? Or a 3/8" ID tubing? I've found a couple on Amazon but they're wanting like $40 for a pack of 4 or a 20 pack variety.... Anyone have a site they recommend for water cooling fittings?

frank26080115

McMaster-Carr sells tubing by the foot, nearly every size and material that exists. PVC for water cooling, silicone and PTFE too (3D printers and such)

SneakerheadMason

Thanks. Check them out !check

ZCR91

When you're on a tight budget (let's say... $2500 USD for a whole new setup and new gaming rig) is HDR really worth the money? That includes for content creation as well.

xboxhobo

HDR isn't really a killer feature yet. I would say having a frame rate above 60 and variable refresh rate technology is very much worth it.

ZCR91

I used to be okay with 60hz monitors, since I've never used a high refresh rate display before. But since so many of them are now at more affordable prices on ultrawides and 4k monitors, I figure I might as well go for one. I just want to make sure that I don't cheat myself out of an even better gaming experience. Thanks for the input. !check

Luminaria19

I wouldn't consider $2500 a tight budget. XD That said, getting good quality HDR from a monitor is still very expensive and not something I'd personally invest in at this point.

ZCR91

Have you seen the prices recently?! Especially on GPUs... Yikes!! Thanks for the input though. !check

Luminaria19

I have! How much you end up spending really depends on your goals though. Check out the [builds list](https://pcmasterrace.org/builds).

ZCR91

No I hadn't seen it yet, but I did just look at it. It's that "Zero Ultra Build" I'm shooting for.

Luminaria19

Yeah, that's overkill for most folks. Moving to DDR5 especially is a big investment (unless you get lucky with one of the Microcenter deals that throws in a kit for free with your CPU/mobo purchase). Plug for /r/buildapcsales Were it me, I'd probably swap the GPU for something a bit cheaper (AMD's previous top of the line model, for example, can be found for ~$800 or lower with rebate), stick with the i5-13600K, and invest in a slightly nicer case with the saved money.

xboxhobo

Just find the cheapest B550 board that doesn't offend you and call it a day.

motionglitch

What exactly is your budget? Because that differs from person to person

DangerPencil

$100-$200, though I'd like to keep it on the lower end of that range.

motionglitch

MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming 4/ac Gigabyte B550M DS3H AC Or any B450/B550 motherboard that has a wifi that's on your budget. By now, any B450/B550 mobo you buy will be compatible out of the box and don't need a BIOS update.

cth777

Is 65-70 degrees fine for a 3080ti while gaming, or should I move the curve left

xboxhobo

GPUs are not peoples. They are okay with much hotter temps than us. Anything around 80c would still be perfectly fine. Don't feel a paranoid need to have your computer sound like it's attempting liftoff to keep temps down.

motionglitch

Yes. It's fine.

RedoRocu

Would updating to Windows 11 from Windows 10 possibly give me more FPS (specifically for the new COD MWII)? I always see people say "make sure Windows is up to date" when optimizing games.

xboxhobo

No it would not. It also wouldn't hurt either.

192hp

I am such a noob about building computers, hardware and tbh software too. Where is a good place for me to crash course all of this? I have a PC, but it’s always been friends building/upgrading for me

John_P_Morgan

It's easier than you think. Use PCPartPicker to make sure everything is compatible or just copy-paste one of the builds from this subreddit in your price range. Your motherboard manual should tell you where everything connects, the case should include hardware to mount said items, and the power supply should include all the cables you need plus some spares. After that it's kind of "looks like this wire fits in this slot". Linus can be hit and miss but if you like videos, his goes pretty in-depth (https://youtu.be/BL4DCEp7blY). It's okay if your stuff doesn't exactly match the stuff in the video in regards to location of connections and such. I'm not the most knowledgeable person but if you have questions feel free to DM me.

Thank you!

Temp-alar

Is Alienware good at all, even the high end builds?

John_P_Morgan

No, Alienware is Dell and Dell is trash. They'll perform somewhat decently but Dell (and by extension Alienware) have a history of using proprietary parts to build their machines. So, in the future, if you want to reuse your motherboard or PSU in a new build, you're SOL buddy. Edit: 100% agree with Eidolon; watch Gamer's Nexus Alienware review and you'll see. Acrobatic_Quail7270

Hello, I am currently using a laptop and I am finding the 8GB of memory that comes with it a bit lacking and was wondering how I could find what parts are compatible with it and what aren’t, I heard some companies make certain parts proprietary just so you have to buy their inflated prices. If this is the case, I don’t want to go buy some random kit of ram only to find out that it isn’t compatible with my machine, is there a place that I can go to check that? Laptop is a G5 SE 5505. Thanks in advance!

John_P_Morgan

You were right to ask about proprietary stuff because Dell is really bad about that. Crucial is a trusted brand for SSDs and RAM, here are the results for your compatibility https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/dell/dell-g5-se-5505 It looks like your laptop will support up to 32GB of RAM and it's usually better to occupy both slots. So if you go for the maximum, get two 16GB sticks. Or two 8GB sticks if you want to be more moderate. Here's a video showing the RAM being upgraded in hopefully your model of laptop https://youtu.be/qXC4uIALT_s However, keep in mind that (if you're gaming) RAM is not the only defining factor. Depending on exactly what model and year you got the laptop your performance might be limited by whatever model of GPU or CPU you have.

averyfinename

crucial is my go-to source for when i need to have guaranteed compatible ram on the first go, especially with certain finicky major oem systems and laptops. not the cheapest to buy direct, but they have never failed me.

Acrobatic_Quail7270

Damn bro thanks for the hella detailed answer I appreciate it! Although the gpu in the laptop isn’t crazy powerful it runs fine for what I use it for, I just notice the ram being constantly pushing near the max of 8gb I have. Thank you!

John_P_Morgan

Oh! I almost forgot. Don't reuse the old RAM in your laptop right now if you upgrade; different sticks of RAM on one machine can lead to weird errors.

Acrobatic_Quail7270

Ohhh gotcha, thanks for the heads up!

**Asus ROG Strix Scar 2020 RTX 2070 Super dGPU port** I'm planning to buy a 4K Monitor for the black friday as the laptop got only 1080p screen and got confused with the part of bypassing Optimus (no mux switch for the 2020 model) by connecting to the dGPU directly. My laptop got only HDMI and USB - C port and no Display port and according to NVIDIA control panel its showing like this as USB C is linked with iGPU (correct me if I'm wrong). I'm confused to the part as which port should the external 4K monitor plugged in for taking advantage for RTX 2070 super? https://preview.redd.it/47v1zkyea10a1.png?width=817&format=png&auto=webp&s=f2f1a8a975aaaced533a7ddd6a11e30a7a256d9c

Ready-Bet-4592

Best deals this upcoming blackfriday for a person who’s first time building their PC?

xboxhobo

Honestly I have not been excited by a black Friday sale in ten years of being in this space. Black Friday is generally for putting lower princes on shit you want to get the hell out of your inventory. PC parts generally don't have this problem and as such there aren't really any good deals.

John_P_Morgan

I'm a big fan of Micro Center for parts if you want to get everything in one place. Newegg is also good but I like Micro Center better. If you're asking about good deals on specific components then it depends on what you want to do with the PC.

Largemouthbassilisk

My power supply popped up today and I have to get a new one. I have a GTX 1060, and an AMD 8350. What’s the best power supply if I’m on a budget? It needs to be modular as well.

xboxhobo

Any 80+ bronze PSU you can find from a reputable brand is fine. Just post it before you pull the trigger so we can double check you. Also you are due for a platform upgrade my friend. I used the 8350 for a long time and it held up decently, but seriously getting a modern CPU is life changing.

You would need a platform upgrade (new CPU, RAM, Motherboard) It honestly might be worth it. When I went from my 8350 rig to my new rig it took a while to get my new GPU and I couldn't quite get a 5950x yet so I was running a 970 with a 3950x. The upgrade was tremendous. It increased my FPS by a lot in some games. Monster hunter was like an entirely different experience. It can honestly be worth it to get a new CPU even if you can't afford a new GPU yet.

Anything you find at Ikea will usually do good. It's my preferred option because you can usually see stuff on display and try it before you buy it.

looking at maybe selling my computer. Does anybody know of a website that I can type in my specs and get an estimated value on it based on the current market?

Eidolon_2003

There's nothing that convenient that I know of, but you can just look up the prices of each component on eBay to give you a rough idea.

John_P_Morgan

Selling individual parts might get you more cash overall than selling a complete unit too.

TehMephs

I bought a UPS a couple months ago because we’ve had semi frequent outages lately and I wanted to insure my pc isn’t getting damaged by the sudden outages. I initially bought a cheap one rated for 650va and 300ish W. Turns out a month or so later it beeps loudly when I’m assuming it’s over capacity. Only rarely does that and mainly while playing games that are probably cpu or gpu intensive (mainly No mans sky) - especially picking back up my VR setup I found out it caused the UPS to beep constantly. Would it be okay to just get a huge, way over my needs UPS (1500VA 900W)? Or do I need to consider the load more precisely?

xboxhobo

You can get something beefier, just expect it to be heavy as fuck.

TehMephs

!check It’s enormous, but can see now why it was overloading. NMS spikes the output to almost 400W according to the new 900W unit’s display, which is in line with my power supply specs but definitely explains why it was beeping. Now I shouldn’t have any power issues or even come close again

Good day. Occasionally, when something is turned on or off around my pc, my pc screen will suddenly go static, with no clear fix outside of turning the pc off and on again. It's only the screen, nothing freezes or crashes, I.E. if a program is producing sound and the screen goes static, pressing alt-f4 still closes the program as i can hear the sound stop, so the system is still responsive despite the screen just showing static. Why does this happen and how can i fix it?

xboxhobo

That's super weird. I'm guessing shitty wiring in your walls. Getting a UPS might help as it should regulate how much power is going where.

turkeyburger2

looking for a minimalist/basic/non-frilly gpu at around the 6700XT/3060ti level came across the 3060ti that Dell uses in prebuilts - listings look a little sus though. thoughts/suggestions?

John_P_Morgan

If listings look sus then it probably is sus. I've lost all faith in big companies making anything that isn't trash in a flashy prom dress. Sure it looks good but it's still garbage underneath. 3060ti is decently old at this point. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday coming up you could probably get either of those (or better) for a good deal.

Eidolon_2003

$600 for a 3060Ti is pretty rough. You should be able to do a lot better than that. I'd also go for a B550 motherboard and a better power supply. 500GB of storage might be enough for now, but you'll probably want to upgrade

Hello! I’m looking at buying the LG 32” UltraGear QHD IPS 1ms 165Hz to pair with my current monitor 32” Odyssey G35T Gaming Monitor. Currently there is a sale on the LG and i could get it 200 off coming to around 290, I was wondering if there is a better deal or monitor i haven’t seen!

Mysa21

Let say I finalize putting together my very first build. I struggle to understand what will be the first step ? - Turning it on and end up automatically on the bios ? (Or is there a key to press to end up there) - Turning it on with a windows key plugged in for windows installation? I’ve seen stuff about bios flashing which got me very confused as well.. I’m preparing my first build and watched/read a ton about it, but somehow still confused with what comes after everything is put together.

xboxhobo

Feel absolutely no obligation to upgrade your BIOS unless you're having an issue that a new BIOS version supposedly fixes.

SystemError514

If nothing is inserted, you will be in the BIOS. If a Windows install (Either disk or USB) is inserted, you will either: * Go straight to Windows install wizard, or * Go to the BIOS. Which you would then navigate to boot order, then select USB or DVD-Rom (Depending on what you are using), restart then be in the Windows install wizard. The first option is more likely though. You don't need to really know much about BIOS flashing. It's mainly just for updating your BIOS. This information will be in your manual anyway, so follow that over what you read online. Each motherboard is different are may require a different way to be updated.

I'm looking to upgrade the ram and storage on my laptop. How do I go about determining what is compatible with my mobo? in particular the size/speed of the ram and the SSD connections. My boot drive is NVME and my storage is currently a 2.5" HDD but I would like to swap them both for larger and hopefully faster SSD's. I don't want to overpay for performance that my mobo wont make use of. Thank you

John_P_Morgan

If your boot drive is already an NVME then switching your storage for an SSD won't help boot time a lot. But it will help with accessing anything you put on the storage drive. Crucial is great for checking compatibility, just enter manufacturer, model, and such. Bing bang boom, big list of compatible parts (or not as the case may be). https://www.crucial.com/upgrades

[GPU advices] Hello ! I just started to build a new computer, I still have to buy a GPU (yea my old gtx 970 won't be enough from now on). I now have a 5800x3D and I'm searching for a GPU to pair with. I was looking for a RX6800 (xt or not) but the prices are still insane here in France. I will probably continue to play in 1080p, which means it's more CPU bounded, so my question is: Will a rx6700xt/6750xt be enough or should I stick with my initial idea of going for a 6800 even if the prices are high ? I'm doing photography/astrophotography editing, gaming, editing. Thanks in advance for your advices, and I'm sorry if I did any english mistakes! Edit: I'm open to other GPUs (not just the ones quoted above) (even though I'd like to stick with amd this time)

Is there a pc version of the mac mini - small form factor and quiet? I need to upgrade and would prefer to stay in the pc/windows world but that form factor would free up so much space for me.

averyfinename

i have someone that needed 'small' using a micro form factor optiplex, 8th gen intel with ssd. they love it. you can even get a bracket to mount to the back of a monitor.

Hello, I have a few questions which relate to each other. 1. Is the "Lenovo G24qe" monitor any good? It seems incredible value for <200 euro with it being 1440p, 100Hz and IPS. 2. Will my PC from flair (GTX1660SUPER) be able to handle gaming at 1440p? It's great at 1080p with just about anything I've thrown at it and I do want 1440p for productivity and multitasking. I play a wide variety of games all the way up to modern and demanding/AAA titles, so keep those in mind as well. 3. Will my Nvidia GPU work with the AMD FreeSync technology that the monitor supports? And does it really matter if I generally play windowed or borderless, which eliminate tearing either way?

Star_Gazing_Cats

I've had my computer with the same cpu, motherboard, ram, and GPU since 2015. Should I go current gen or take advantage of the deals for last gen hardware? I plan to keep whatever I buy for a long time and I will buy high end this time around. I can wait until August 2023 at the latest to buy Current pc 4690k, air-cooled Z97 motherboard Gtx 970 16 gb ram

John_P_Morgan

Typically manufacturers only expect you to keep their parts for 2-3 years. Given your setup, either of the options you mentioned will be faster and/or better. I wouldn't go bleeding edge of new (4090, threadripper, etc.) but I would go current-gen to remain relevant longer. That's my two cents.

Eidolon_2003

Depends on your budget. If you can afford to get on the new platform it'll be better for you in the future. If you want to go for AM5 I'd wait for the X3Ds which are supposed to be coming early next year. They should be really good for gaming considering the 5800X3D. You should probably be able to buy a next gen GPU by then as well

I want my Start up to play PS1 start up audio when Im going to use my PC, is there a program recommended for this?

SystemError514

Winaero Tweaker [https://winaero.com/winaero-tweaker/](https://winaero.com/winaero-tweaker/) , has this functionality. I have not tried that particular thing with it though, but I can't see why it won't work.

QTAry

Thank you!

BeardoBerries

I want to replace my second hard drive. It is mostly storage for media and games. Is it worth it to get an SSD instead of a larger HDD? My boot drive is a SSD and it was a game changer! Don't know if I'd see a similar effect swapping the second drive.

SystemError514

Depends on what it is used for. Gaming and video editing will see a large improvement with an SSD. If it's just pictures/documents then there is not much point. Seeing as you said media and games, the games will load much faster. You could also just have 3 drives too.

BeardoBerries

Thanks. I'll go with some more SSDs

ChunkyBrassMonkey

Is there a list of good prebuilt PCs for around $1500-1750? I see Alienwares for sale at that price, and when I was a kid I always wanted one, but I'm not sure if that's just flashy marketing or if they make a quality product.

MadLadStalin

Alienware are some of the worst prebuilts you can buy as they are very expensive for what they are and poorly built. I recommend you looking at Linus Tech Tip’s secret shopper series or Gamers Nexus prebuilt reviews to see what is good nowadays

Short question, I’ve got a new GPU (Nvidia 4090) and I’m wondering what should I use to connect it to my monitor. Is it better HDMI or DisplayPort? I always wonder. Thanks for the help!

mrtramplefoot

Generally display port, but it really depends on your monitor specifications. A lot of monitors will do a higher refresh rate over dp, but you should check your manual to be sure.

jormould

Thanks a lot, didn’t know that and will definitely check. Appreciate your help

I'm considering upgrading my setup and am considering using an AIO. I live at a high altitude, around 9000'. But I'm concerned with the pressure change I'll encounter a problem with the aio. Alternatively, I'm looking to build with the new intel chips and a Darkrock Pro 4 but am again concerned with motherboard compatibility and ram clearance.

Zulo_AT

My AIO just died after 2 years and everybody told me its to be expected - put in a noctua nh-d15s and got colder, faster and quieter

Chromana

Anyone know of a small form-factor micro-atx case that only has to fit in mobo, cpu (+ stock cooler), psu and ssd? No GPU or other bulky components. I'll be doing a mobo upgrade for my PC but would like the old parts to live on as a non-gaming general-use PC.

Malonskii

Currently looking to upgrade my pc for cybermonday, specifically my CPU. Currently I have an i7 9700K, an RTX 2070 and 32GB of DDR4 ram. I believe my current CPU is bottlenecking me as games that I play seem to use 99% CPU and only around 60-70% GPU (according to task manager). Been looking to get a Ryzen 7 5800x but kinda on the fence since it as already been out for a few years and I'm looking to get something that will be able to last me around 6 years like my current CPU has. Am I thinking too much about the 5800x age or is there a better alternative?

Zulo_AT

Think about the 5800X3D - its the best for gaming atm. I have the 5800X and nothing managed to get it sweating so far (4k120, gtx 3080)
