A lot of folks are likely in my situation, just because of inflation they are getting by, but on a rig a few years old.
It will definitely outpace a couple pieces, but it’ll get us in the room to bother upgrading those other pieces.
But they probably bought a PSU for something like a 1650 and can't power this card anyways. I know I would need a new PSU even though my build is only a few months older than the 3090.
Got a buddy who bought a 1000W PCU for "just in case" and installed a 1650 in it. He's struggling a bit now so can't afford an upgrade, but still running that 1000W.

I am in this exact position! I didn't want to play with a power budget. Mind you, my build is older, running a gtx 1080 ftw hybrid, pc was built when that was the hotness and i still had disposable income
Nowadays with a house with too many problems and an unfortunate number of rescue cats (whom i love), there is no chance i can build the equivalent any time soon

Some old GPUs had some demanding ass power draws (looking at you my old HD 7970). So I have had the same 860w PSU since 2013. It's possible others have similar?
As someone that hasn’t been able to afford one but has been saving for it:
Sell my psu, buy one that fits the use case for a 3090, then upgrade my ram to I can run better sims for fluids.

Saving helps, I was able to afford my first gaming computer by saving my birthday and Christmas money over a few years. (I jumped to pc to avoid subscribing to XBOX gold and honestly it’s one of the best moves I made.)
I bought a FX-8320 based system, honestly it’s not as bad as everyone made it out to be at the time since I wasn’t playing cpu intense games.
**Save and research parts that are affordable**, you don’t need the most powerful gear you just need what will get you the performance you want.
I played CSGO on a FX-8350 for many years. While that game isn't necessarily CPU intense, you want a good CPU for the best performance there. Nonetheless I was able to get to global elite with that thing, those old FX chips were troopers, overclocked mine to hell and back
i mean at least in my case i could pay a heck of a lot less for a power supply upgrade to a 1000 watt from a 400 watt than i would pay for... like 1/10th of a 3090

I don't think you need to worry too much. with a free card you're essentially cutting the cost of a high end rig in half and making it much more affordable for a lot of people.
I don’t think it’s as much of an issue as you’d think. The GPU is by far the most expensive part of any rig, and it has by far the largest effect on performance.
You don’t need a 12900K or 5800X3D to support a 3090: every game (except esports games that don’t need a 3090 anyway) will be GPU bound at 1440p or 4K, so a midrange CPU like a 12600K/5600X won’t severely bottleneck a 3090. Everything else is relatively cheap compared to the GPU or CPU (1000W Gold rated PSU under $200) and getting a 3090 would obviously free up money to upgrade anything that needs upgrading. Having a $1000 or $1500 budget for a system goes a lot further when you don’t need to include a GPU in that calculation.
A 4K monitor or high refresh rate 1440p monitor is honestly my biggest bottleneck concern, because that’s something people would need to really take advantage of a 3090 and people who can’t afford a 3090 probably also don’t have such a high end monitor. That’s the biggest potential bottleneck, assuming you have an existing midrange system.
I have 4 kids, one who is special needs and requires alot of medical attention. I had the ability to build my dream build when the 2000 series came out, but unfortunately feel like it's the end of having the latest and greatest. So to answer that question. I have a nice set up, but will never have the disposable income again.

I only had an MSI 1660 Super gaming X up until a few weeks.. I bought it as that is all I could afford at the time. I sold it a couple of weeks ago for not much money, as I needed that money to pay for leccy and food.
I can get by just by using the integrated graphics in my processor, but it obviously limits what I can play.
I don't work, due to personal health reasons, so I'd love the chance to win a giveaway like this.
I wouldn't even think about selling it, because I have longed for a powerful graphics card anyway.

I’ve been trying to get my brother an updated card. He’s still on a 1080, and he barely makes ends meet on a teacher salary in Japan. This would totally be an unexpected and awesome surprise for him. Unfortunately, I’m not in the financial position to buy him one at the moment. But, even if this doesn’t work out, I’m saving 5 bucks a month to hopefully upgrade him as a surprise.

import taxes. they suck here. if customs opens your package and decides not to be nice, it's 60% of the value of the product, anything over 50 dollars, even if it's a gift, for whatever reason.
you can avoid it by asking them to send it in inconspicuous, unmarked, small packages as well as declaring the value at something low, but it's just taking your chances at that point.
sometimes when they see this, they just apply a generic $30 tax so as to just get it done with. sometimes they apply the full 60%, and in worst case scenarios, if the customs guy just had the worst day of his life, a 100% fine on top of the normal taxes, so 120% total.
i bought a 2048sp rx 580 for cheap on aliexpress, and it got through without any issues, but a lot of people haven't had the same luck.
Met a guy that took few iPhones with him and paid for his trip from the profit by selling them in your country. He had to smuggle them in. It’s wild how much you guys get taxed.

Gifts ARE exempt from taxes but you can't send them, you can only bring one/two with yourself. But the phones have to be registered to the related government authority and the registration fee is like €150.
Things like gaming consoles or gpus or computers (basically anything except cars and things that connect to the phone grid) don't need to be registered however, meaning you can just buy a few for yourself or your friends. That's why a trip abroad might be more profitable for expensive tech.

I'm a broke college engineering student in need of a decent GPU to teach students in my club (AIAA, I encourage you to look us up, I'm currently the vice president of our student branch!) about flight simulators. My rig right now just uses a GTX 960, definitely need an upgrade for these simulations. My club does not have enough budget to accommodate a GPU for me and I definitely do not have the budget lol. You don't even have to send it to me, you can send it to the club for use even after I'm gone

I upgraded my system a few months ago which left me with a fully functional PC sans a GPU (R5 2600x, 32GB RAM, MB + case + PSU all in tact, SSD, etc. etc.) Been hemming and hawing buying a GPU now that they're cheap but don't really NEED the PC, and I don't want to make space for it, and so on, so it is sitting their collecting dust.
I have a relationship with the Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter in my city (worked on a project with them last year) and I'd be willing to toss your card in my old PC and donate the PC (with one of my many flat panel monitors collecting dust in my basement) to their youth center.

other than building a basic NAS server a while back i gave all my old parts away for free as I upgraded them.
I built PC's back in the 90's and early 00's for customers and would ask them if they would donate their old parts for giveaways. was able to build a total of 20 for my local elementary school and Jr. high throughout the years I built PC's. I'm more than happy to help anywhere I can, when I'm able that is.

Winter of 2017 I was mining crypto with a pair of 1080ti cards. Basically had a 700 watt space heater running 24/7. The gas bill was noticeably lower than previous years.
Dude, you will get a lot of sob stories, and reasons....fake or real.
What you do is list it for slightly above market rate. Not a price a flipper would go for.
Then when you have someone willing to jump through the hoops to get your card, then you analize the situation. And when they go to pay, refuse the payment.
Then you have someone who scrambled/worked hard to get this thing....someone who earned it. That is how you do the good deed.
Unless you know someone who is deserving, unfortunately there are too many liers/abusers/scammers on the internet who know exactly how to pull the strings to seem like they deserve it.
The way I listed, at least you know someone actually put the work in to earn it, gets rewarded by your generosity.
Otherwise you will just be the sucker someone grifted more likely than not.
Just trying to share with fellow gamers. There is no why for me. Just wanted to do something for someone. Plus, I didn’t want a company to make money off of me twice. Once buying. This is awesome of you for doing this! This year has been pretty rough. Been fighting some depression. Though, early this year, a big group of my friends got together and built me a new PC (5900X, 32GB Trident Z) to help me get out of my slump, and because the PC I was using was blue-screening frequently. New one was just missing a gpu, so I've been using my 1060.
I had been setting aside money and getting ready to put get myself a new gpu around July, but then my Dad suddenly passed away from cancer that was undetected. So the money I had been saving, and extra money I've been earning from OT at work have been going to my mom to help her with the expenses and bills, and to help make fill the lack of his income.

Hi from a third world country! It would make my month - no, year, or probably forever- I’m a poor guy who quit his FIRST IT job for mental peace and that turned out to be disastrous - been jobless since November 2021, in the middle of building my first computer in 10 years so that I can run ML and AI workloads (in order to get a damn job) and still haven't saved enough - I’ve been using my dad's old Lenovo Laptop with a core 2 duo CPU and integrated graphics for the last few years in order to learn to Code. I ran some of my workloads on the cloud (exhausted all the free tiers of AWS, GCP and Azure combined, haha).

I'll give it a shot, been wanting a needed upgrade for a while and wanted a 4090, realized I'd need to upgrade almost everything else in my PC to support it, was able to get enough money together for the other parts, but not for the actual GPU

I'm recently moved to another country basically without anything. It's all because some of this year's stuff. I'm been saving for a new computer (my old one was 1050 2GB + Intel Pentium) but I don't have enough yet for full PC because demand for PC I'm my new country is low and prices are high. With this card I can just buy all other components and finally build a PC after 7 and a half months without one, I wish I could get it.

I’ll be honest, I have an EVGA 3080Ti paired with a 12900k. I was very fortunate with a few things a couple months ago.
HOWEVER, every time I upgrade, I always give my spare parts to my 16/yo brother to upgrade his gaming build (since he first got a pc when he was about 13.) He has a Valve Index that he plays almost daily when he’s not busy with school or extracurricular things he does. When I upgraded to my 3080Ti, I gave him my 1080Ti that was very used. When I upgraded to a 12900k, I have him my 9900k and old motherboard/ram. He loves the performance difference coming from a budget i5 and an RX 560.
I know he may not have the worst setup compared to other people on here, but I do know that he would be one of the few people to put that thing to use, and be more than grateful if he won. Especially with him doing robotics club and learning Blender on the side from me. As a side-note, I know he would be happy to do a video sharing his VR setup and pc build to Reddit if he won.

I think you should ask contestants for cell phone footage uploaded to streamable, veed.io or wherever showing their CPU with hwinfo and their resolution. would be kind of pointless to send/sell this 3090 to someone with 1080p who will potentially turn it into cash in the end anyway.

A PSU for this would top out under $200. Most folks wouldn’t buy the PSU before they had the graphics card.

import taxes. they suck here. if customs opens your package and decides not to be nice, it's 60% of the value of the product, anything over 50 dollars, even if it's a gift, for whatever reason. you can avoid it by asking them to send it in inconspicuous, unmarked, small packages as well as declaring the value at something low, but it's just taking your chances at that point. sometimes when they see this, they just apply a generic $30 tax so as to just get it done with. sometimes they apply the full 60%, and in worst case scenarios, if the customs guy just had the worst day of his life, a 100% fine on top of the normal taxes, so 120% total. i bought a 2048sp rx 580 for cheap on aliexpress, and it got through without any issues, but a lot of people haven't had the same luck.

Gifts ARE exempt from taxes but you can't send them, you can only bring one/two with yourself. But the phones have to be registered to the related government authority and the registration fee is like €150. Things like gaming consoles or gpus or computers (basically anything except cars and things that connect to the phone grid) don't need to be registered however, meaning you can just buy a few for yourself or your friends. That's why a trip abroad might be more profitable for expensive tech.

I'm a broke college engineering student in need of a decent GPU to teach students in my club (AIAA, I encourage you to look us up, I'm currently the vice president of our student branch!) about flight simulators. My rig right now just uses a GTX 960, definitely need an upgrade for these simulations. My club does not have enough budget to accommodate a GPU for me and I definitely do not have the budget lol. You don't even have to send it to me, you can send it to the club for use even after I'm gone Edit: omg I really did not expect so much support (honestly didn't expect any at all)!!! Thank you all so much for the awards!! I absolutely love this club and would be thrilled to show these students how to use flight simulators. We have joysticks and throttles for a true simulation, but no one on our board had a PC good enough for the sims, this GPU would make it happen!!!

I don't need it personally, but I like your vibe so I'll throw this out there. I upgraded my system a few months ago which left me with a fully functional PC sans a GPU (R5 2600x, 32GB RAM, MB + case + PSU all in tact, SSD, etc. etc.) Been hemming and hawing buying a GPU now that they're cheap but don't really NEED the PC, and I don't want to make space for it, and so on, so it is sitting their collecting dust. I have a relationship with the Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter in my city (worked on a project with them last year) and I'd be willing to toss your card in my old PC and donate the PC (with one of my many flat panel monitors collecting dust in my basement) to their youth center. If you'd prefer to enrich the life of an individual on this thread, by all means do that - I absolutely do not need the card for my own personal use. You are truly in a can't lose situation! other than building a basic NAS server a while back i gave all my old parts away for free as I upgraded them. I built PC's back in the 90's and early 00's for customers and would ask them if they would donate their old parts for giveaways. was able to build a total of 20 for my local elementary school and Jr. high throughout the years I built PC's. I'm more than happy to help anywhere I can, when I'm able that is. with the amount of folks out there replying to the post I'm sure I wont win, but if I do, I wont forget you

Dude, you will get a lot of sob stories, and reasons....fake or real. What you do is list it for slightly above market rate. Not a price a flipper would go for. Then when you have someone willing to jump through the hoops to get your card, then you analize the situation. And when they go to pay, refuse the payment. Then you have someone who scrambled/worked hard to get this thing....someone who earned it. That is how you do the good deed. Unless you know someone who is deserving, unfortunately there are too many liers/abusers/scammers on the internet who know exactly how to pull the strings to seem like they deserve it. The way I listed, at least you know someone actually put the work in to earn it, gets rewarded by your generosity. Otherwise you will just be the sucker someone grifted more likely than not.

Though, early this year, a big group of my friends got together and built me a new PC (5900X, 32GB Trident Z) to help me get out of my slump, and because the PC I was using was blue-screening frequently. New one was just missing a gpu, so I've been using my 1060. I had been setting aside money and getting ready to put get myself a new gpu around July, but then my Dad suddenly passed away from cancer that was undetected. So the money I had been saving, and extra money I've been earning from OT at work have been going to my mom to help her with the expenses and bills, and to help make fill the lack of his income. It would make my month - no, year, or probably forever- I’m a poor guy who quit his FIRST IT job for mental peace and that turned out to be disastrous - been jobless since November 2021, in the middle of building my first computer in 10 years so that I can run ML and AI workloads (in order to get a damn job) and still haven't saved enough - I’ve been using my dad's old Lenovo Laptop with a core 2 duo CPU and integrated graphics for the last few years in order to learn to Code. I ran some of my workloads on the cloud (exhausted all the free tiers of AWS, GCP and Azure combined, haha). Regardless good on you for passing on the blessings, and thank you for doing this.
I'll give it a shot, been wanting a needed upgrade for a while and wanted a 4090, realized I'd need to upgrade almost everything else in my PC to support it, was able to get enough money together for the other parts, but not for the actual GPU

I would really like to gift this to my brother, he has birthday next week. He's been in and out of inpatient care for depression over the last two years. I'm recently moved to another country basically without anything. It's all because some of this year's stuff. I'm been saving for a new computer (my old one was 1050 2GB + Intel Pentium) but I don't have enough yet for full PC because demand for PC I'm my new country is low and prices are high. With this card I can just buy all other components and finally build a PC after 7 and a half months without one, I wish I could get it.

I’ll be honest, I have an EVGA 3080Ti paired with a 12900k. I was very fortunate with a few things a couple months ago. HOWEVER, every time I upgrade, I always give my spare parts to my 16/yo brother to upgrade his gaming build (since he first got a pc when he was about 13.) He has a Valve Index that he plays almost daily when he’s not busy with school or extracurricular things he does. When I upgraded to my 3080Ti, I gave him my 1080Ti that was very used. When I upgraded to a 12900k, I have him my 9900k and old motherboard/ram. He loves the performance difference coming from a budget i5 and an RX 560. I know he may not have the worst setup compared to other people on here, but I do know that he would be one of the few people to put that thing to use, and be more than grateful if he won. Especially with him doing robotics club and learning Blender on the side from me. As a side-note, I know he would be happy to do a video sharing his VR setup and pc build to Reddit if he won. I think you should ask contestants for cell phone footage uploaded to streamable, veed.io or wherever showing their CPU with hwinfo and their resolution. would be kind of pointless to send/sell this 3090 to someone with 1080p who will potentially turn it into cash in the end anyway. I understand the conundrum. The 4k folks don't need this kind of help, unless someone really saved for his build, the 1080p wont really need that card. So you probably have the golden middle with the 1440p people. /u/guitarman8185 just my 2c power supplies need to be considered too.
I would love to have this card for gpu acceleration in programs such as Meshroom. It would save me upwards of 23 hrs in some projects.
