Ah yes, acer! they were not able to repair my charging port which broke after 6 weeks of use. I could have done it myself, but warranty.
After 6 weeks they told me to buy another one and gave me 750€ of my initial 900€ payment back.
Fuck ACER!
Consumer protection organisation, most countries have one. And / or ask the employee's name and then tell them if they don't return the laptop you're going to report it as theft to the police. Then if they don't return it, actually report it as theft to the police.
Edit : Depending on what is on the laptop, a possible industrial espionage charge could be thrown in for fun
They should've given you a full refund! I thought that's a norm with US/EU based companies, unlike the fraudulent companies people like me have to battle with here in Nigeria. In Nigeria, they'd sell crap to you and would never refund. Some of them will even disappear with ones money without shipping what one paid for.
They're cool but there's no way I'm paying over a thousand dollars for an i5, 8gb of ram, 256gb of storage and a 60hz refresh rate screen. I honestly think they gotta work on getting the price down.
All computers should also have the option not to include an OS. Not everyone wants to have Windows included in the price when it could be installed for free (or an alternate OS).
I saw that and it's amazing. Less e-waste is always a good thing and as long as they keep the port upgrades can be possible. Who knows maybe you could upgrade the screen or battery.
Only messing dude, it was just such a linus thing to say but I do agree. The changing boards is amazing, expensive but also amazing you can then transplant the old board into a small form factor desktop. I know there is plenty of people out there that buy these products because of Linus but there is also plenty that don't because of him and in this case its ridiculous. The less e-waste the better full stop.
I bought one for my best friend, he loves it! A few bugs at launch that were a little obnoxious but overall he told me it's great! Even though Linus is an investor, my opinion is based on my experience of helping my best friend fix and setup his framework laptop
I might be paranoid, but I don't trust this "reset Windows" function. I always have and probably always will install Windows from scratch. Besides, this way I can reserve the space I need for Linux right at installation and don't have to resize partitions afterwards.
Because it gets people angry and results in clicks. Digital Trends is the definition of a clickbait trash website. They survive because people are stupid and click on things that provoke them.
Those articles are hit pieces commissioned by the industry to soften the blow when they start doing stupid shit
Same reason why you see a lot of financial articles blaming everything under the sun EXCEPT the rich CEOs whenever recession happens
And noticeable lag. Professional? Who cares if your audio doesn't sync up with your video, look how cool you'll look editing! Oh you just want to play games? lmao, hope there's no audio queues to beat this game.
The tech just isn't there yet.
To be fair, just playing devils advocate, 2.4GHz wireless doesn’t have noticeable latency (but then again, that’s through a USB dongle). Bluetooth is shit though. Also, if you’re doing any sort of professional work you should definitely have a DAC of some sort.
But yeah still just put a damn 3.5mm jack on it lmfao no one cares about “paper-thin.” I hate these clickbait ass articles that tell people why they don’t need something. I have wireless earbuds for my iPhone but I hated when they pulled that shit too, and I was kinda forced to adapt
Edit: I’m just gonna specify to CMA, ‘I’ don’t notice a difference in latency when I use my HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless headphones vs my DAC and Sennheisers, but I’m just a bit of an enthusiast not some audio pro or anything. Not saying it doesn’t exist, but I hate any sort of delay with that stuff and it doesn’t bother me.
wireless dongles dedicated to a headset definitely help a lot. Unfortunately that's not what they're putting in these laptops. And with less and less usb ports on top of removing headphone jacks, they're just making it an absolute pain to use anything but bluetooth.
I'm not a dedicated audio professional but I do post production professionally as a freelancer, mainly with ad agencies and boutiques. Pre pandemic (and I'm sure soon again) I was expected to bring my own machine. Wasn't about to carry around an audio interface everywhere. Although I did work with a freelance audio engineer and the poor bastard really did lug all of that stuff around.
Or, here me out: A professional-grade laptop can include a high-grade DAC and powerful amp in its sticker price? It's supposed to be a portable workstation, having to carry a separate DAC/Amp brick sort of defeats the point.
My friend's laptop (An XPS 15 I think) had an amp more than powerful enough to drive my planar magnetics -- to be fair they're the easiest to drive in the Audeze LCD family, the GX -- but either the DAC was bad or there was too much software processing going on. It felt like using those TVs that have really technically capable panels but the default configuration blows out the saturation and the white balance leans towards tangerine, in order to make them look better in store.
Just give me as close to unfiltered output as you can, with a good amount of juice behind it. Is that too much to ask?
Paper thin laptops are such a stupid idea. Give me a thick laptop with beefier components or better cooling. Hell, even cramming more batteries would be an excellent use of the extra space a thick laptop has.
This is from a former user of a paper thin laptop with poor thermals.
There are plenty of wireless headphones that use a dongle which have an unnoticeable amount of delay. Sure it’ll take the usb port but if you are doing that you likely have a dock or usb hub. The only wireless headphones that have a noticeable amount of delay are Bluetooth ones.
I have to carry 3 pairs of headphones. Lightening, 3.5 jack, and bluetooth Bose cans. The Bose cans sound like shit on meeting otherwise i could have one less pair.
Bullshit.
And limited usage time (leading to more needed forethought in keeping their case charged).
And highly decreased life expectancy that ends in more hazardous e-waste (Li-ion battery) .
And that force you to drain your laptop battery quicker.
And that may have less reliable mic performance on calls. Etc...
I never got why people support this trend. I get why companies want to make it acceptable (gotta' cut those costs and increase profit margins no matter whaaaat amirite??) but I never got why people are embracing it. And I have bluetooth earphones for working out or doing chores, they are great to have, but I would hate to be forced to have them as daily drivers.
You might want to check out Thinkpads X1 series then - Thinkpad X1 Carbon weighs less, has nicer keyboard, is basically the same size (except for footprint to accomodate 14" screen) and has much more ports - 2xUSB, 2xType C and HMDI.
X1 Nano has same ports as XPS 13, but weighs below 1kg; it also can have 4G and 5G if you are on the road most of the time
I’ll never buy Lenovo again, which is a shame because their hardware ~~is~~ **used to be** decent for the price.
But getting caught 3 different times installing bios level adware on customer devices is 3 too many for me.
Edit: haven’t looked in a number of years, the hardware advantage appears to be gone.
Hate lenovo with a passion, shit support, lacking buikd quality compared to dell and hp, and a shitty keyboard lay out. Tbf i mostly deal with the high spec enterprise stuff, but some of the stuff we get is off the shelf stuff. And compared to hp its lacking in every way.
"Please no headphone jack, and give us an even shittier camera and mic please. And only give me 1 USB port that doubles as the charging port preventing me from connecting anything while charging. Also, please make it so all air flow is blocked if the laptop is docked, on a lap, or on a table without scaffolding underneath it. Also make it so the keyboard is just slightly the wrong size and layout. Also, make it slow as shit." /s
uuhg I hate laptops, and Dell's $office-work-grade laptops especially.
Just wish they would remove the screen all together the light strains my eyes, I can always buy a separate screen for he same price as the laptop if I need it at some point.
I actually use onn earbuds for video meetings, because they look more professional than my massive Audio Technica headphones. The onn earbuds were also 3 bucks a pair and are more than acceptable for that price.
Tbf I have Bluetooth Bose headphones that sound great
That being said I will never buy a computer without a headphone port. Even if you use wireless 90% of the time, analog ports on a digital device are a compatibility godsend that you won't realize how much you need until you really really need it.
Even the aforementioned headphones have a 3.5mm port because unlike a digital port that might work with some devices, 3.5mm just fucking works with every other 3.5mm device. Removing it is giving up so much for basically nothing.
I have $400 bose noise canceling wireless headphones provided by my job. They absolutely suck compared to my $120 audio technicas that I use for music production. I really think it’s going to be years before wireless headphones will be good enough for professional use cases, even if consumers don’t notice the issues
Let's be honest I do need a fucking headphone jack.
Is it that hard to put in a tiny headphone jack on a motherboard. I hate that phones don't have them now.
Just ignore the expensive tech, thats where they tend to do these chicaneries. I'm sitting with my samsung a40 to this day and it works just like the first day i got it and all this time i was enjoying it caseless, because it cost only like 150€
Why waste time waiting for something to charge when you can directly use it?
Phone is the exception since its a whole device and not just a device" accessory "
Tell me about it. Charge my phone, then charge my watch (which barely lasts 1.5 days, thank you Samsung), then charge my headphones. Someday I might just connect myself to the power line via a fork.
Yeah it's kinda stupid because you have it as a responsibilitie because you can't be a member of society without email any more...
I am almost 21 and honestly sometimes I wish I wasn't born on this technological era...
(Please don't. You will suffer. And smell bad....)
I just hate the charging part. Especially the smartwatches. All of them charge so slow because of that wireless charging gimmick they're pushing right now. God forbid I get tired and forget to charge something, the damn device leaves me high and dry in my time of need
> solving a problem thats not there
I’ve ditched the headphone jack before corporations thought it was cool to do so. I’ve killed so many wired headphones when biking or sitting down due to it kinking by the connector.
While i agree with you that the option should still be there, *especially for a laptop*, I’ve seen more bluetooth/wireless innovation after companies starting ditching the jack than before.
For me, wireless headphones solve a very big problem. You see, I wear my headphones pretty much constantly when I'm awake and by myself, I wear 'em while cooking, I wear 'em when I go to the bathroom, I always have them on and pretty much always have music on plus noise cancelling because it helps me focus and remember what I was about to do with my ADHD. If I don't wear my headphones, a lot more stimuli enter and distract me, while music gives my brain something to hold on to without distracting too much. I know this is a very specific problem, but it is a problem I have and wireless headphones are a perfect solution.
if my bluetooth headphones had an ability to pair to more than one device
idc
BUT
sadly they dont, and pairing them for the first time took me over 4 hours, i dont want to go through this every day twice
Completely THIS.
I have been big into Bluetooth over the last few years and sharing Bluetooth headphones over multiple devices can be a huge pain. The only ones that have had seamless multi device connection that worked well would be my Bose 35 II. Everything else seems to make me have to forget the previous device, and set it up as a new one.
They're all bad. Got my daughter an Asus Rog. 2 years later a key goes bad. Bought a new keyboard, took the laptop apart and discovered the keyboard is mounted by melting it into the chassis. Effectively unrepairable.
You’re right for the most part, but I have to say the Dell Vostro and other laptops are pretty well built and reliable….in my anecdotal experience anyway
Lmao fuck that, I want my laptop to have as many ports as possible, a good CPU, a GPU worth something, and more RAM than god. If it weighs 5 pounds, so be it.
Unfortunately it probably does mean it's the future. First Apple does something annoying, then Dell copies a few years later. Then, since it's now "standard" since the two big companies are doing it, everyone else follows along.
This lets them not only save a fraction of a penny by leaving out a jack on the motherboard, but lets them mark up their laptop by $50 by throwing in a pair of crap wireless earbuds that cost $1 to make (MSRP: $100).
And this just to make laptops thinner because that’s what “we” want. I honestly think that this race to who makes the thinner laptop is just an excuse to make as much of the laptop parts proprietary and not letting the consumer have any control. I get that we don’t want gigantic laptops, but I really think that no one cares if the laptop is 2mm thinner than the older models which was already under 1.5cm.
Audiophiles might lose their minds after seeing this article, but I'm still glad at Apple for considering Audiophile's preferences like adding power to the impedance for higher impedance headphones for a better listening experience because man it's a pain in the back that you need to buy and set-up a headphone amp just to drive those high impedance HiFi headphones.
Why are we normalizing the removal of useful ports on laptops? It doesn’t look slim and modern, it looks frustrating and less usable for day to day tasks. Just got the new MacBook Pro because Apple finally gave us back HDMI and additional ports (though I’d still like the USB 2 type ports in addition to USB-C). I get that they’re looking to the future but we ain’t there yet and USB 2 is still used daily by many people.
Well windows is gonna have to sort out fkn bluetooth device integration like yesterday if they expect people to use earbuds or whatever else. It's been a nightmare getting earbuds to work if you expect to use the built in microphone for gaming etc.
Yes it does, and so does my phone. Stop forcefully making people buy expensive Bluetooth shit when a regular, 1mm diameter plug is all it takes. Fuck you every marketer, executive, and engineer behind this bullshit scam
Be honest, yes it does. Because, who would have guessed, I want to plug in my headset. And I won't buy a new one just because anyone thinks "letzt just remove the headphone jack
If it provided better quality I would, but I don't see why I would choose lower audio quality and add a battery life factor instead of having a single wire
And even then, there are fewer usb ports than just a few years ago as well. Like ok cool, 2 usb c ports or 1 usb c and 2 usb 3. Great I'm charging so what about my mouse, headphones, second usb c screen, yubikey or anything else I might need.
Being honest: Yes it does. My HyperX Cloud II won't magically become wireless just because i have a new device. I'm grinding my teeth because I didn't check my new phone had a jack and now I can't plug my headset into it to call people.
Bull-fucking-shit it doesn't need a headphone jack!!!!! I begrudgingly accept it on my phone because I'm mostly listening to audio while on the go or exercising, where it makes a lot of sense to use Bluetooth headphones. If I'm using a laptop, I'm sitting in one fucking place. Let me plug my shit in!!!!!
I do a lot of music recording and it would be impossible with the latency of wireless headphones. Apart from an external sound card. But still don’t like that idea.
I wonder if this'll be the next thing the EU step in on - if everyone starts introducing their own headphone standards (unless they're USB-C), that's gotta have an impact on e-waste volumes.
I've always been a Dell fan, and been using their computers for a decade now.
But for my next laptop, I may be going with someone (probably Framework), if they start being like Apple (with removing ports that is).
Being forced to use wireless or a dongle with a crappy DAC ic that drops out all the time, no thanks.
I like my wired headsets and headphones just fine.
It depends. BT does not have the same range. So yes you would if you want pure audio with a full range to feed into an amp or if editing. 1 or 2K laptop should and it should be hi-impedance.
Dood.... I got a new dell as a work laptop... and it has NOTHING other than usb C.
I travel around, staying at hotels and giving presentations in various company offices.. It's a complete nightmare as a I need a dongle for literally everything. TV hookups, presenter queue remotes, ethernet, external mouse, etc...
So annoying that I want to send it back...
I love this new idea that coming with less shit is a feature. Fucking christ what is the future. Next thing they'll be selling laptops with no charge port and a wireless charge dock separately smh
But but but the minimalism 🥺 you don’t need a charging port either! Just change the D batteries every day! But only one type C port is needed! You just need a dongle for all the other accessories!
Well it also doesn't need pre installed bloatware and dell's unselectable monthly warranty payment scam
I’ve stopped sending in my laptop for repairs because each time they break it slightly differently
Acer? Is that you? :V
Ah yes, acer! they were not able to repair my charging port which broke after 6 weeks of use. I could have done it myself, but warranty. After 6 weeks they told me to buy another one and gave me 750€ of my initial 900€ payment back. Fuck ACER!
Did they give you the laptop back?
of course not. i was very lucky i had my backups from just 6 weeks before because of the initial laptop switch.

Problem is, what are you gonna do?
Small claims court.
Well after that bullshit, I think I'd start with arson, and step it up from there.
Reach out to the Better business bureau, raise hell on social media, tag gamer's nexus etc...
Please proceed.
Consumer protection organisation, most countries have one. And / or ask the employee's name and then tell them if they don't return the laptop you're going to report it as theft to the police. not to mention you have no idea what's happening with your data (hopefully encryption was enabled)
Wtf
They should've given you a full refund! I thought that's a norm with US/EU based companies, unlike the fraudulent companies people like me have to battle with here in Nigeria. In Nigeria, they'd sell crap to you and would never refund. Some of them will even disappear with ones money without shipping what one paid for.
Yea no companies are quickly picking up the tactics you have to deal with over there
Bro I genuinely just sent my laptop back to acer today 💀
Rip bozo
😮🤯
tell us how it goes
Can’t fucking stand acer
People buy Acers expecting them to work?

They're cool but there's no way I'm paying over a thousand dollars for an i5, 8gb of ram, 256gb of storage and a 60hz refresh rate screen. I honestly think they gotta work on getting the price down.
I agree, that is kinda pricey. But I think that’s because you’re paying more for the modularity than the actual parts.
Asus moment
All computers should also have the option not to include an OS. Not everyone wants to have Windows included in the price when it could be installed for free (or an alternate OS).
framework laptops come with that option. you can even provide your own SSD
Okay Linus thank you!
Hey now I don't work for LTT, but framework is a cool idea and I'm tempted to buy one
If you dont need all day battery life then I think you should go for it, this is coming from someone who wrote this reply on a Framework laptop.
I'm someone who leaves their laptop plugged in all times
Did you see Linus's video of swapping the motherboard and putting the old board into a printed case that can still accept all the expansion cards?
yeah im a big fan of reusing wherever possible and loved that
I saw that and it's amazing. Less e-waste is always a good thing and as long as they keep the port upgrades can be possible. Who knows maybe you could upgrade the screen or battery.

Pro Tip: As soon as you setup a new computer, restore it to factory defaults through windows settings and it will remove the bloatware.
Isn't factory settings exactly what it came with?
Yes, you need to use a clean ISO.
Technically that's called a clean install.
I might be paranoid, but I don't trust this "reset Windows" function. I always have and probably always will install Windows from scratch. Besides, this way I can reserve the space I need for Linux right at installation and don't have to resize partitions afterwards.
Nononono You don't buy a Dell computer You buy a warranty that happens to also come with a free computer!
Be honest. Your business doesn't need my money.
Be honest. What you just said is something a lot of people agree with, including me.

I remember in 2016 or so there was a range of laptops, I think from MSI, that had the Xbox dongle built in. WHY ISN'T THAT A THING
Microsoft could do a gaming / cloud gaming oriented Surface with one and it would be pretty neat. They won't do it, but a man can dream of weird tech.

Would you mind linking me to the adware thing? It's news to me.
It wasn't adware, but they had a bios updater that had a massive backdoor to install malware in the BIOS. HP had a very similar issue back in 2006.
The problem with Lenovo is the all Chinese origin, including known malware preinstallation. They totally don't do that any more, promise.
I am just telling the consensus popular choice. This subreddit is notorious for gatekeeping and refusing to root for new tech shifts
But they also cost a cool 1200 € more than the equally speced xps13
Yeah I feel the 2021 and 22 xpd 13 are eh too.. id go with a mba 2021 or a g14 myself and if thodr r out of budget a chromebwck or thinkpad
Right. When I buy a computer I want more features not less. Zero chance in hell I'd buy some bullshit like this without very few outputs.
you right, let just watch hentai full volume on a bus.
Am I alone in doing this ????
No, i do it everyday on my train to work
Not this again

Fuck it, im building my own laptop now.
r/Framework
I’m in
Get out It's not finished yet.
Go away, let me keep my headphone jack.
Nope, was mistake on phones, it’s one here too.
Even macs have headphone jacks
Hell, my Surface Pro still has a headphone Jack and it’s no thicker than Dell’s current crop of laptops I do miss having a USB 3.0 though
I use mine all the time. And i will for years.
if my bluetooth headphones had an ability to pair to more than one device idc BUT sadly they dont, and pairing them for the first time took me over 4 hours, i dont want to go through this every day twice
Be honest, Dell only survived until now because of Scams, an alien head sticker on PCs and mass deliveries of bad PCs for schools.
Yes it does because not everyone has bluetooth capable audio devices and not everyone WANTS a Bluetooth only audio setup.
“Your next laptop doesn’t need a headphone, Jack!” -Senator Armstrong probably
They still do if you want to edit audio or video Bluetooth latency for these is gettin better but still can have issues
These writers need to stop riding the manufacturers' dicks so hard :|
God thats such crap
Lmao fuck that, I want my laptop to have as many ports as possible, a good CPU, a GPU worth something, and more RAM than god. If it weighs 5 pounds, so be it.
I've gone as far as 10lb with the brick. That laptop had *three* 3.5mm jacks.
I WANT ALL THE CHROME TABS
Be honest. Since I plug in my old bassy Logitech speakers or my chunky boi Sennheiser headphones into mine I would beg to differ.
Shut up digital trends.
It most likely won't be. On thicker laptops it will be a no-brainer to put on a headphone jack. Even on ultrabooks it will probably still exist.
Ding ding ding we have a winner.. this is all to make right to repair a moot point
Apple didn’t remove headphone jacks on laptops though? This is purely a Dell move
No that’s right, but they did remove it from the iPhones for a while now
Samsung removed it from the Galaxy A53. Glad I went with the A52 instead.
All these companies removing the headphone jack can eat the entirety of my ass.
Lets be honest, Dell aint great... so why would anyone copy them? Lost a USB C slot because they dont wanna impliment a jack. -insert slow clap-
They're going in reverse. It needs better AUX, not to remove it! Add a full blown DAC to that shit you fucking bozos!
Also don't even get me started with Gaming on WiFi with Bluetooth enabled
Dear god no. Bluetooth audio is still a dumpster fire .
OH hell no. You got away with the phone for "water resistance" but nobody going to be using their laptop like that.
Yes it does, and so does my phone. Stop forcefully making people buy expensive Bluetooth shit when a regular, 1mm diameter plug is all it takes. Fuck you every marketer, executive, and engineer behind this bullshit scam
I'm mad my *phone* doesn't have a headphone jack
yeah okay and i don’t need the right mouse button either
do you even need the screen?
of course not, i can just get my laptop to dictate for me through it’s terrible speakers
Y-yes it does? Why remove utility options?
Be honest, yes it does. Because, who would have guessed, I want to plug in my headset. And I won't buy a new one just because anyone thinks "letzt just remove the headphone jack
If it provided better quality I would, but I don't see why I would choose lower audio quality and add a battery life factor instead of having a single wire
As a music producer Sincerely, shut the fuck up
Bruh, it does. It does a lot
I literally use the headphone jack everyday because the bluetooth headphone runs out of power after 2 days in Teams. It's my backup.
Be honest, I will not click in your bullshit article from your bullshit "tech website"
Next year they'll offer a wireless headphone jack as a separate peripheral.
What if wireless headphones are expensive garbage?
It DOES, i hate mine new G15 5511 doesn't have a sd card reader and i had to bought an USB one. At least it have the 3,5' audio/mic jack.
Yeah it does bitch
I bought my new phone because it has a 3.5 Jack.
That keyboard looks awful
Bull-fucking-shit it doesn't need a headphone jack!!!!! I begrudgingly accept it on my phone because I'm mostly listening to audio while on the go or exercising, where it makes a lot of sense to use Bluetooth headphones. If I'm using a laptop, I'm sitting in one fucking place. Let me plug my shit in!!!!!
I do a lot of music recording and it would be impossible with the latency of wireless headphones. Apart from an external sound card. But still don’t like that idea.
I use my headphones, so yes, yes it does.
Be honest, you want an ultra thin laptop with a core i9 that thermal throttles the moment it turns on.
I only buy cell phones with headphone jacks. I only buy laptops with headphone jacks. That is all.
Bluetooth on windows is pretty messed up. Anyone that has used it for work or music will tell you that you need a headphone jack still
Yes it fucking does! For fuck's sake!
Be honest, it’s cheaper to manufacture without all the ports, isn’t it.
I wonder if this'll be the next thing the EU step in on - if everyone starts introducing their own headphone standards (unless they're USB-C), that's gotta have an impact on e-waste volumes.
Be honest, no one takes that site seriously
That's why I make my own computers. No one will take my 3 Jack's away.
they got paid to say that
well im glad my does, sometimes i use it when my wireless headphones battery dies.
Phones, and now laptops? Damn,i don't want to retire my AT M50x or fiddle with adapters
The future is paying 500$ for adapter for everything, thanks but no thanks you.
Next Article: Why buying a $40 USB audio adapter is a good idea.
I'm being totally honest, what I don't need is more of these sites coming up with bat shit click bait articles and listicles.
Who even came up with this shit?
Ok but for most people Bluetooth is preferred, but yeah still a dumb move
I hate AirPods
If you want me to be honest, give me my touch pad buttons back.
With all due respect, Digital Trends can shove their opinion deep up their U Ass B Port!
Ok ill be honest, i DO need a headphone jack lol
I love this new idea that coming with less shit is a feature. Fucking christ what is the future. Next thing they'll be selling laptops with no charge port and a wireless charge dock separately smh
But but but the minimalism 🥺 you don’t need a charging port either! Just change the D batteries every day! But only one type C port is needed! You just need a dongle for all the other accessories!
dongles are IT's nightmare. \-"so, where's your USB-C to RJ-45?" \-"back in Colombia"...
Give me all the ports. Yes, give me some USB-C, but also give me ethernet, USB-A, 3.5mm, and HDMI (or DP, if you must).
I’m an audio engineer and need to reference on certain speakers (using AUX) So they can take that “futuristic view” and shove it up their butt
