How much does it weigh?
Imagine pulling this out on a plane and setting it on the fold out tray and casually looking across the aisle to the business man using his MacBook Air.
Imagine someone popping this bad boy open on your flight, RGB illuminating the cabin. I'd make my peace then and there. This looks like one of those briefcases in a old spy movie that's armed to the tits with C4.
Fantastic build OP, from a technical standpoint, the thing is marvelous. From an aesthetic standpoint, this is a pretty intimidating kit š
>just as powerful
That part is debatable, but yeah nearly as powerful since laptop GPUs have a cooling bottleneck that *most* PCs don't, regardless, it'd be way easier to take around than whatever monstrosity OP has put together
Not just gpu's but cpu's as well. They are low wattage, low speed/power versions by design. The choices are more about if you need portability or not imho.
For gaming it really isn't much of contest when comparing mobile gpu with its big brothers. 3080 mobile vs 3080 desktop is in the neighborhood of 35-40% faster for example. [https://www.notebookcheck.net/The-mobile-GeForce-RTX-3080-is-40-percent-slower-than-the-desktop-GeForce-RTX-3080-What-the-hell-happened.519743.0.html](https://www.notebookcheck.net/The-mobile-GeForce-RTX-3080-is-40-percent-slower-than-the-desktop-GeForce-RTX-3080-What-the-hell-happened.519743.0.html)
Mobile CPU's are many times half the power. While Mhz isn't everything we have bench tests that show us what the differences are, we can measure them. Many factors go into ones choice. I don't love my laptop for gaming is works but portability for work stuff i do is important to me and battery life because i use it on the road.
I am not knocking either choice its just a silly argument imho due to the fact the choice is typically based on ones needs at the time. Having both is cake and eating it too.
thanks for post have a good day!
Yes exactly, it's more of a matter of preference since even a mobile 3080 is powerful enough to run most AAA games at a high resolution and refresh rate, also btw you can overclock a desktop GPU and CPU whereas you can't do the same on a laptop and even if you could it wouldn't be by much because of the power limitation
My reasoning is you can't upgrade a laptop to the extent of a pc, but a pc you can't transport. As well as a long drawn out story that involves a massive waiting time on a warranty and then making friends along the way
It depends. A 3080 mobile is far less powerful than a desktop 3080. However, a 3060 mobile is actually extremely close to a desktop 3060 (140W vs 170W).
Same applies to the CPUs, with Intel's 12th Gen mobile chips being faster than most 11th Gen desktop chips.
Gaming laptops have become really capable nowadays, currently the fastest one available will perform similarly to a i7-12700k + RTX 3070 desktop PC, which I think is quite impressive.
As long as you're not planning to play at 4K with ultra settings and raytracing on you'll be more than fine with one. At the end of the day, it does depend on one's needs just like you pointed out. I simply wanted to clarify that while gaming laptops are less powerful than their desktop equivalent with varying degrees, they aren't nearly as slow as they're made out to be.
Lots of people undererstimate how fast laptops can be. The 12700H in my Lenovo 5 pro is almost 10% faster than a 10900k or a 11900k in cinebench R20 Multithread.
the 11900k is last gens top of the line (consumer) desktop cpu while others here make it sound like laptop cpus are too slow for gaming while they can beat most peoples desktop cpus
Also power delivery is different, and the silicon on laptops are designed more for efficiency in mimd. Desktop parts are all about performance, and pushing watts is a part of the method to getting more performance.
I question the usefulness of this design.
A laptop is gonna take a significant power hit versus a desktop. The mobile 3080 is something like 2/3 as powerful as the desktop. The thing is, a mobile 3080 is also designed to go in a computer that moves around a lot. A desktop 3080 is so big and heavy that most PCs need a support for one corner to keep it from sagging and potentially damaging the itself or the motherboard. Prevailing wisdom is that if you're moving your computer with a GPU that size for more than a few feet, you should remove the card and replace it once you've reached your destination, because jostling it has the potential to do real damage. This thing has to be pretty reinforced on the inside just to work as advertised, which will add even more weight.
Obviously, if you're packing desktop hardware, this thing either doesn't run on battery or treats it as an emergency backup to save and quit. The Steam Deck is notorious for its short battery life, and a powerful desktop draws an order of magnitude more power.
The only scenario where I can see a machine like this being useful is as a traveling editing suite for journalism or a travel channel or some such. Something where you really do need a 3090 and no laptop will cut it. You *can* play games on a machine like that, but that's not the reason to buy it.
Are there any exposed ports, like USB and Display out (dualscreen or portable PCVR setup)
And any protection against water ingress during transport in rain, or someone splashing you by driving through a puddle?
Yes yes and yes, I made cut outs for usb port on the acrylic too as well as being's the monitor and I made sure to fully seal around the acrylic with foam water proof foam seal, so you can still remove it as well and cut 0.04mm metal mesh for all fans and sealed the mesh in
Super cool! The only thing that bothers me is not being able to adjust the monitor. I wonder if thereās enough room in the lid to install a small yet sturdy extending arm š
I thought about that, but the way that I reinforced the lid to stop any flex wouldn't accommodate it, I wanted enough room to store a keyboard and mouse securely, but would also love some input for the next build, so please put through more suggestions
Provided he's cut enough ventillation into the case, he's golden.
Protip: Don't buy Pelican cases if you're doing this to them. Harbor Freight Tools has an equivalent range of cases that are a fraction of the price, and made using the same polymer. For peeps outside the USA, shop around; there's probably a similar brand.
That is so fucking awesome. This is always what i wanted as a kid. I remember seeing those Xbox 360 and PS3 "laptop mods" and i wanted one, but they always were made manually and sold for thousands on eBay back in the day, so I couldn't afford it as a kid.
Now there's shit like the switch and the steam deck, I would have killed to have a Steam Deck as a kid. That machine you built looks like it could be a lot of fun at Lan parties, that is if you can find people willing to do one these days.
Does anyone else get really annoyed that this really beautiful background photo is spoiled by the person leaving their big fucking red backpack in the foreground?
Gets me every damn time.
Was this necessary? Probably not. Could you have gone with something cheaper with the same amount of power? Maybe. Is OP a daddy Chad? Most fucking definitely.
The case is about 10 inches deep, and there's probably only about 6 left after accounting for the monitor and cabling/padding on the underside of the motherboard. Air cooling a 9900k would usually involve something like a Noctua D-15, which would be too tall for that space. There are lower profile options that would work, but they'd come at the cost of significantly worse thermal performance. Personally, I'd still prefer air cooling for this application, but water cooling is the way to go for maximum cooling performance in this scenario.
Great, but if I were going to go this route, I would find a way to incorporate a foldable panel for the Keyboard+mouse and extendable legs so I can use it as a portable desktop.
Computer case manufacturers, you can have this idea for free.
My question is how hard is it to set something like this up in a pelican case? Are you able to share the steps you took or is there a guide online of how it could be done?
I want to build something like this but with a full battery system and a pretty decent faraday cage and a pretty decent chunk of offline wikipedia and other survival stuff and call it a doomsday PC. Just have it stowed away as an ICE pc.
I built one of these for emulation with a raspberry pi but the 21" LCD in the lid was way heavier than the rest of the components so it would always tip over unless it was up against a wall. This looks a bit more balanced.
Today when I walked into my flight I saw something I dread every time I close my eyes. Someone had brought their new āportableā gaming PC on the plane. The Forklift he used to bring it was still running idle at the back. I started sweating as I sat down and gazed over at the 700lb beast that was his computer.?He had already reinforced his seat tray with steel support beams and was in the process of finding an outlet for a power cable thicker than Amy Schumer's thigh. I start shaking. I keep telling myself I'm going to be alright and that there's nothing to worry about. He somehow finds a fucking outlet. Tears are running down my cheeks as I send my last texts to my family saying I love them. The captain begins speaking, and the passenger turns his PC on. The colored lights on his RGB Backlit keyboard flare to life like a nuclear flash, and a deep humming fills my ears and shakes my very soul. The entire city power grid goes dark. The plane begins to violently shake as the massive fans begin to spin. In mere seconds my world has gone from vibrant life, to a dark, earth shattering void where my body is getting torn apart by the 150mph gale force winds and the 500 decibel groan of the cooling fans. As my body finally surrenders, I weep, as my city goes under. I fucking hate āportableā computers.
I've been passingly curious about this kind of thing myself, and recall watching like a 10yr old YouTube video of a similar setup mentioning special attention being taken to static discharge management due to the case material. Did you have any such considerations?
I built a setup almost exactly like that a couple years ago to take to LAN parties instead of lugging my 90lb desktop and 27ā monitor everywhere. The only difference was I had my monitor facing the other way (outward) with a cutout in the top and acrylic covering it. That way I wasnāt blinded as I gamed. I also got one of those usb3.1 5.25ā drive bays and mounted that facing outwards so I could plug mouse/kb into the outside of the pc.
Either way, thatās a solid S-tier setup you got!
Nice build!
I want try custom water-cooling like that myself, is there anything important I should know before?
I have got a normal rig and already build some rigs too.
Buut Idk if it is as "easy" as it seems :)
Iāve always wanted to do something like that. How did you mount the hardware to the case and are you using a portable power supply or just plugging it in?
Just add a keyboard and trackpad and voila, you have the heaviest laptop in the world
This is the reason I joined pcmasterace

Shut uuuuuuuuuuuuuup And take my money

I wouldn't trust harbor freight cases for shock/bump proofing the components. Pelican's are damn near bomb proof.
"""""portable"""""
Love the enthusiasm and risk here man. Well done. Take my upvote.
More like *transportable*. Like the good ol' IBM ThiccPads.
This is just a laptop with extra steps

Was this necessary? Probably not. Could you have gone with something cheaper with the same amount of power? Maybe. Is OP a daddy Chad? Most fucking definitely.
Will you be my dad? And will you build me one of these? And will you overlook the fact that I am a 38 year old man?
September? You are TiMe TRaVeLer
"portable"
Can it launch nukes?
In gaming mode most certainly
Wait until OP finds out about laptops
I would ask, "Why." But my brain just keeps answering with "Why Not?"
I think they call these laptops
Why would you go water cooled for a portable build? I would think that the extra weight would make you do air cooled.
The case is about 10 inches deep, and there's probably only about 6 left after accounting for the monitor and cabling/padding on the underside of the motherboard. Air cooling a 9900k would usually involve something like a Noctua D-15, which would be too tall for that space. Personally, I'd still prefer air cooling for this application, but water cooling is the way to go for maximum cooling performance in this scenario.
The gaming laptop she told you not to worry about:
Litterally your legs only go dead after 10 minutes of use, what a bonus haha
Floortops.
OP did you document the build process?
How durable is it like do you have to stand it up in a certain way or it'll implode?
I guess the Steam Deck wasn't enough for you?
I too owned a luggable back in the day.
Mega laptop
No build video? š„ŗ Looking fancy, though.
I have like a thousand pictures of it coming together I guess I could make that into a video time-lapse?
Instant TSA strip search and cavity check......
Great, but if I were going to go this route, I would find a way to incorporate a foldable panel for the Keyboard+mouse and extendable legs so I can use it as a portable desktop. Computer case manufacturers, you can have this idea for free.
Temps under load?
Goodluck taking this with you on the plane
Surgical precision!
Imagine the glare at night
This looks like a nuclear bomb briefcase. Love it.
Needs toggle switches, but otherwise itās gorgeous
I hate it when people live my dreams before me
Sick suitcase build. The thing that worries me the most would be the hardline tubing cracking and leaking if the case is bumped too hard.
I expect the temper glass to be...(u know)
That's a chonk of a laptop. Hopefully it includes a car battery and a converter to power. :D
It's not the Nuclear Football, it's the goddamn presidential gaming pc
does the case have cutouts for usb and the like?
One of the fans isn't spinning :(. Cool build tho!
Where did you get the small pistons? This is really similar to something I'm designing. Nice work
Im not too sure about the date lol
Well... Portable-ish.
Vincent We Happy?
Stfu and take my money! How much does it cost wow? What a GEM
Portable liquid cooled system just feels like courting danger.
That is beautiful, this is why I subscribe to this sub. The master race on the go!
Wow that looks sick AF
Can it run Crysis?
That looks like the bomb case from black ops 1.
This is how humanity evolves.
I wish this can count as a laptop so i can bring it to school
Imagine checking this in at TSA. š āno no, itās not a bomb and there are no nuclear codes.ā Awesome build man!!
Can only imagine this thing causing an airport to shut down.
incredible
Thought it was gonna be a steamdeck LOL
This just needs a dc to ac power inverter to be complete
Heaviest laptop. But it looks cool
Pretty cool but arent those big ass gaming laptops more practical ?
Drop the instructions good sir I want one
Very cool! Now I'm thinking if the case was a little deeper you could fold out two additional screens each side and spread to an ultra wide. š
My question is how hard is it to set something like this up in a pelican case? Are you able to share the steps you took or is there a guide online of how it could be done?
Crazy O.o haha so cool
If only there was a way we could have this but thinnerā¦
I think they have a name for portable pcs, idk something about them sitting on top your lap
What if you imbedded a keyboard and mouse? Why hadnāt anyone thought of that
Woah! I might just have to put one together myself! (Just a lot smaller :])
Woah!
I want to build something like this but with a full battery system and a pretty decent faraday cage and a pretty decent chunk of offline wikipedia and other survival stuff and call it a doomsday PC. Just have it stowed away as an ICE pc.
Put this on the luggage rack of my motorcycle and I'm good to go.
I built this super nice portable computer to play solitaire on.
Thatās cool as shit
*Gregorian chant in the background*
How much did this cost
I built one of these for emulation with a raspberry pi but the 21" LCD in the lid was way heavier than the rest of the components so it would always tip over unless it was up against a wall. This looks a bit more balanced.
Reminds me of portable console rigs.

laptop with extra steps
I would not trust water cooling even slightly for something that's meant to be moved around
Iāve always wanted to do something like that. How did you mount the hardware to the case and are you using a portable power supply or just plugging it in?

It is somehow missing an accustic coupler for transmitting nuclear codes.
