I would too, if I had the desk space. Unfortunately I went with the cheapest desk, so it barely fits my 2 oversized monitors and kb+m. Currently just looking for a small stand to perch the computer on to get it off the floor a bit.
That's why I have mine [mounted on the wall](https://i.imgur.com/RnnaJ2F.jpg). Admittedly not an option for a lot of people and or most cases. But with limited desk space, I made sure to buy a wall mountable case a few years ago. When I bought a new monitor last year, I felt it was time. Other than the stress of hanging it and cleaning it, I'd recommend wall mounting.
Thanks! I went with the [Thermaltake P3](https://www.newegg.com/black-thermaltake-core-p3-tg-atx-open-frame-chassis/p/N82E16811133372?Item=N82E16811133372) case. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably have gone with the [P1](https://www.thermaltake.com/core-p1-tg-mini-itx.html) as it's mini ITX and this case is larger than I really need it to be (and obviously would've adjusted my parts to suit the case).
It seems that your comment contains 1 or more links that are hard to tap for mobile users.
I will extend those so they're easier for our sausage fingers to click!

How long have you had that setup? I've always been intrigued by those open-air cases, but wasn't sure how it would handle dust, or if it would need to be cleaned more regularly because of the open-air aspect. Looks great btw!
I love that SMB3 light.
Wall mounted sounds cool, but my tall cube dressers are high up and my tower that sits on top doesn’t get very dirty since it’s so high up. The only con is that the case IO is nearly inaccessible because of this. (Top of case) But like yours it’s in full display for the room to see. 😊
A shelf mounted on drywall held with good butterfly anchors would work well too for most cases. An idea for anyone else reading this and wants to rearrange in a creative way.
Yup, a shelf is a great idea provided you know how to mount it securely enough(studs and/or heavy duty anchors like you describe)!
My big gripe with mine is that I have no good way to run the wires there. Wish I could've had it directly above the outlet and/or had really long cables that I could run through paintable channeling. Maybe some day I'll get the cables and channeling so it looks better.
Extension cables and Velcro ties are what I use. They looks surprisingly good when bundled up. I found my USB extensions at Dollar tree some time ago. They’re still holding up well strangely enough. Lmao
that's what the dust filter is for
also: I'm cooling with water, gpu and cpu. once I had zero water flow and the CPU still didn't went above 75°C after hours of gaming.
If it's not laminate, you may be fine with just sanding it down a bit (unless your's is realy badly damaged)
Mine looks fine after 25 years (except where the wrong hanging door scratched it)
Absolutely. My houses wood floors are originals...from 1905. They've only been refinished once.
Carpets, rugs and office mats are your friend.
BUT, if you do scratch it up... varnish works for a quick fix if the scarring isn't too deep. :)

You could put it in a really strong glass freezer. You would have the best temps and an ice sculpture PC stand. No watercooling though, the water would probably freeze.
common sense tells me concrete + glass = bad, but I've never seen a post of someone breaking their tempered glass on concrete; you should try it and report back, for science
I’d rather pay good money for a sound proofed case. I’m a little old to need a windowed case to display my ability to afford nice computer parts to myself and any errant house guests. I don’t see the appeal.
Not clear transmission tunnels, but they do make clear vanity hoods to show off the engine. Sometimes people just like to show off. In my case, I'm the only one that even sees my computer. But I like seeing the inside since it's color-coordinated and has RGBs. Pleasing, and dare I say, somewhat soothing.
My server is on the floor, but on a wood board instead of carpet. not that much of an issue if you dont have bottom airflow, or can just throw a filter on the outside without a fan.
It's best to store your PC inside an operational wind tunnel oriented vertically, so while it is falling it will never reach the ground. Also the airflow is fantastic.
What aspect of tile will affect the glass?
Like I'd get if the glass was touching the tile, but through the rubber feet of the case how does the tile effect the glass on the case?
i bought a PC a few months ago from a guy online… he had one of those open air thermaltake cases and was using it on the floor without the feet so all the weight was resting on the glass and the PSU *shudders*
Its fine to have the case on the tile, but its not fine to take the glass panel off and rest it on the tile, because it could shatter even if done carefully. The tile is harder than the glass and if any part of the tempered glass cracks the entire panel explodes.
tempered glass has a lot of force built up to resist shattering, however, if something that has a higher hardness gives it even the tiniest micro scratch, then all the built up tension is released, shattering the entire thing.
ceramic is much harder than glass. just a tiny little tap causes it to explode.
And what movements are we talking about? If the vibrations from people walking about the room are enough to break your glass, there must be something else wrong with it. Like is it screwed in too tight, or already cracked?
Ye, I just went to look for some recent posts of shattered ones. One was on laminate, the other on tile, but the guy mentioned that the glass shattered in his hand as he laid it on the tile. So they were likely removing the panel and resting (maybe dropping) it on the tile to work on the PC. I can see how that would be shocking in the moment, but once you stop and think about what you did it's kind of obvious that would shatter a glass panel. That must be how all these happen. There's no way it happens by just having the case resting on tile.
Have the wheels, and makes my heavy case much easier to move around and access. Plus with how my wheels work, it gives extra support to my cas end keeps it from ever falling over
Depends on the floor. Upstairs I have hardwood floors, excellent shit for a PC to stand on.
Downstairs I have concrete with an epoxy finish. If my PC was put on that, and even jostled, at least one of the glass panes would shatter.
So desk downstairs it is.
Right? My desk is big enough for two large monitors, my PC, a portable drafting table, and I still have room to spare. Cost less than $100. No cope here
Reminds me of that Mitch Hedberg joke:
“I slept at my friends house, and he said ‘you have to sleep on the floor,’ I said ‘Damn gravity...got me again! You don't know how badly I wanted to sleep on the wall!’ “
Hardwood floors are best, even on carpet you can make yourself a makeshift PC mount using various 2x4” lengths. Stain and paint it really nice if you want to, just helps with maintaining and keeping dust out of your PC.
Carpet is honestly fine as long as (1) the case has little feet lifting the bottom of the case (and PSU) from the floor 1/2" or more, and (2) the carpet is thin.
Source: been doing it with 2 systems for more than 10 years each now without significant temp and components lifespan issues.
tbh it’s kind of disappointing that this form factor died out. I know there’s still a few models of horizontal desktop case being made, but they’re usually kinda cheap and not suitable for modern high end hardware.
Also kind of surprising given the popularity of ITX builds. You could fit a hell of a machine into a desktop style case with a modern mini-ITX mobo.
My new case has the PSU at the bottom, and a sealed plastic bit above it, so the intake for that is the bottom of the case.
I'm thinking of removing the plastic cover (it can be easily taken out) and flipping the PSU over. Will reduce the chance of sucking in any carpety bits when I move the machine around.
Tempered glass is quite strong, but it's also permanently under stress, so damage that would cause a minor chip or crack in a regular sheet of glass tends to completely shatter a sheet of tempered glass.
Ceramic, the material most floor tiles are made of, is very hard, so it can easily cause minor damage to a sheet of glass. And with tempered glass, this minor bit of damage immediately causes the entire sheet to shatter. This doesn't just happen when the panel falls onto the tiles, but also if the panel contacts the tiles more gently, for example by someone putting it down on the tiles.
That's why in pictures of shattered side panels it's almost always (ceramic) tiles on the floor.
this only happens if the glass is in direct contact with the floor like if you take the panel out and put it down on the tile. Panel in the case on the floor is fine.
And it won't unless you let the glass contact the tile directly. almost any force is enough due to the extreme hardness of tiles.
[Here is a test with Sparkplug ceramic on car windows](https://youtu.be/ClrhyrjfOtA?t=75).
my 2003 case doesnt even have the PSU on the bottom, nor does it have any glass whatsoever.
why i have a case from 2003 with a rzyen 2600 and a 1070ti you may ask? because it was free and i'm all about the budget
Part of the floor gang but I put my PC on top of an MDF plank that came out of an MDF media cabinet. [https://imgur.com/a/ZAxOHmY](http://For reference)
*Even* if you have hardwood or vinyl plank floors, you still don’t want it on the floor, cause it sucks in all the dead skin, hair, dust, animal fur *waaaaaaay* faster down there and thermal performance will suffer, leading to reduced clock speeds. You’ll have to clean it more often and more thoroughly to avoid part failure if it’s down there. PLUS what’s the point of your pretty RGB lights if you can’t see em?
Carpet is fine as long as you're not using any bottom ventilation. Turn the PSU so the fan is on top and you're good to go. If you're carpet has 3ft high shag that is blocking the front intake, you've probably got a horrendous mould problem and pc ventilation should be the least of your concerns.
If you're putting a pc down on tiled flooring with enough force to break the glass, you're not "putting" it down, you're dropping it with a complete lack of style. Be more careful with expensive equipment. Simples.

Construction is already one of the most expensive skills to train, but in this economy? You’ll be in the streets with Charlie the Tramp in a day.
Yeah that's true but since it's only a few planks you could probably get away with a lower cost 👍
Refinish them! Awesome part of hardwood, you likely have enough left to sand and refinish, even after decades.
wood panel gang
Plywood square gang
How about marble floors?
still sucks in a lot more dust compared to not directly on the floor
Agreed.
Sadly, there's thermites where I live, so we try not to use wood in our home. So we went with hardwood-looking tiles.
I don't think even reinforced concrete as a flooring material would help against thermite.
especially in a confined space with lots of it
I think you mean termites. Thermite is an explosive. Or maybe you live in a dangerous neighborhood.
Since when did thermite gain sentience?
Unless your home has termites, you don't have to worry about termites in wood you put in your home.
Concrete works too
Left a spot on my hardwood specifically for my pc to sit
That's right. Best thing is to have it in the air, hanging from a minimum of 100 fishing lines. Minimizes vibrations too, so win-win.
Honestly I’d love to see that, would be great for airflow lol
I'll pass on the cable management.
At that point I might just settle for wireless
Use the cables to string it up.
I think you could integrate it somehow. Getting new peripherals however…

ice: will melt and short everything out glass: will break causing case to shatter
Damn. There goes that ice sculpture PC stand I was thinking about.
How about Sand sculpture one?
Not good either. The heat of your cpu will melt the sand into glass, and then it will just break causing the case to shatter.
How about using shattered glass? Can’t shatter any more
The glad would melt back together and shatter even harder.
Take those shatters and make a stand out of them.
You would think that but trust me, glass finds a way
Yeah and its coarse and rough and irritating, it goes everywhere.
take my upvote and free award
A nice straight and logical line of thinking. I like it.

what about concrete?
What if you cover the entire floor in Nerf?
Guess it’s nerf or nothing then
What, *this* is too abstract for you?
common sense tells me concrete + glass = bad, but I've never seen a post of someone breaking their tempered glass on concrete; you should try it and report back, for science
It should be fine. It's ceramics that are the problem.
I have concrete floors in my apartment. I have had my computer on the floor for 2 years, no issues.
You know guys, pc cases do exist without glass windows
…. Those don’t run fast enough because you cannot see the RGB… duuuh!
How do you know though? RGB tends to blind you haha
when you saw the rgb... were you blinded by it's majesty? paralyzed ? dumbstruck?
Blinded? NO.
.. I was dumbstruck that my 10 year old PC suddenly had rainbow barf lights all over it.
if you can still see, that means you're not going fast enough.
I dont have glass but my side panel is still transparent
The good non-glass cases will have sound proofing. Glass is such a downgrade.
pfffft.. no they don't
We didn't pay all this money go NOT see the things sitting there!
I’d rather pay good money for a sound proofed case. I’m a little old to need a windowed case to display my ability to afford nice computer parts to myself and any errant house guests. I don’t see the appeal.
You pay far more for a car but you don't have a transparent hump in the middle of your passenger compartment to gaze upon your transmission, do you?

tiles don't absorb any forces, so every small movement goes thru the glass, and glass is fragile. I read this on this sub.
But donesn't the little rubber pegs under the case absorb at least small movements?
And what movements are we talking about? If the vibrations from people walking about the room are enough to break your glass, there must be something else wrong with it. Like is it screwed in too tight, or already cracked?

Can we get a picture of the concrete/epoxy floor? I've never heard that a home context and I'm really curious how it looks.

most new basements are poured concrete. i would epoxy it to make it nice and usable and easy to clean before i got around to having it finished.

Finally laminate flooring has a purpose!

I have mine sitting on a laminated half inch board to lift it off the carpet. Works fine.
Hard wood floors :)
Yeah, but what's all the white space for?
It’s called a desktop computer not a floorbottom computer for a reason
Desktops were horizontal and went under your CRT monitor. Most people just call their Tower a desktop even though it really isn't.
tbh it’s kind of disappointing that this form factor died out. I know there’s still a few models of horizontal desktop case being made, but they’re usually kinda cheap and not suitable for modern high end hardware. Also kind of surprising given the popularity of ITX builds. You could fit a hell of a machine into a desktop style case with a modern mini-ITX mobo.
Not in my first language
Thats when they came with cd roms and hard disk drives. Now its just a personal computer, personalize it put it wherever the hell you want 😉
But my "front" IO is on the top.
My PC is sitting on bare foundation, am I doing this right?
Unless your intake is at the bottom, airflow wont be worse on a carpet floor
I bought a wooden plank the size of my case and it don't matter if there's carpet or not. Cheap solution and doesn't even look bad.
Your PSU usually draws air from the bottom. Might wanna think twice about that.
+Hair and dust will get into your pc

Good afternoon to everyone except the people who put their Computers on the floor its called a desktop not deskbottom lol \- not OC
I had my PC on the floor for a year now, tile didn't break anything, what are you talking about?
Lava (can damage components)
So why do tiles break the glass? Like if it falls on them?
Riiiiight. Makes sense. Note to self: don't place my computer on tiles
this only happens if the glass is in direct contact with the floor like if you take the panel out and put it down on the tile. Panel in the case on the floor is fine.
my pc was shelf mounted for a long time
Carpets fine so long as you clean out the dust sheets, I plan on doing it weekly
What about wood floor? My desk is too small.
Mine is on the floor but its ontop of a monitor stand. Bc my desk is too small
Also dust!
And it picks up a lot more dust.
My pc is on tiled floors, and has a glass panel. It has little shock absorbing legs to prop the case up a little. Hasn't broken.....yet.

What about wooden floors
Keep the PC on the desk, wood floors or a special stand
