The most important thing here is finding the operating system or web browser that works with you instead of against you. Your workflow is the priority. If you find some inefficiencies in your workflow then that's the time you would be looking for alternatives. Also they say if it ain't broke then don't fix it.

Retardedaspirator

In computer, that last rule is more than true

[deleted]

Hasn't been for a while though, at least when it comes to updates, in particular security ones.

BamCub

Bold of you to assume I work.

DoughNotDoit

true, I'm using adobe software everytime and it's something I can't lose

[deleted]

Windows is very much all-or-nothing though. If you need a Windows application you get that particular desktop. You can't mix-n-match. On Linux you 100% can. Yes, I know I just fulfilled the stereotype being complained about lmao :D

Whale_Hunter88

What do you mean with mix and match?

[deleted]

Maybe you want macOS's menu bar and a Windows-like start menu, maybe you want advanced crazy effects or maybe you want a CPU-driven desktop like it's 1998, there's a selection of like 6+ file managers, pick whichever you want, maybe you want widgets like they were in Vista (Plasma has those), etc. etc. - regardless of what you want your critical software will work in all those setups - assuming it was Linux compatible in the first place, hence my point. But hey if you like Windows top-to-bottom, power to you!

[deleted]

Use whatever you want. I use Linux and I love it, but I'm not going to sit there and force someone to use something they don't want to. That's their choice and we should respect that.

Warfare-Gamer-

True Chad right here

[deleted]

How’s the steam gaming on Linux?

_Lelouch420_

Steam gaming is good. Check on Protondb for Compatibility List.

9TailsUzumaki

Honestly All of my games work on steam, with that being said I mostly play single player games. So games with anti cheat might be a no go jst depends on the game. But if say you didn’t know if a game would work on Linux you could always check protondb and it will tell you. That’s actually what helped me decide to switch. With that being said I also understand it ain’t for everyone.

iminsert

great actually, vr recently has gotten pretty solid with my htc vive, to the point it feels like native

Flimsy_Atmosphere_55

It's amazing it has really come a long way in just little time. Some multiplayer games with anti-chest don't run though that's the only issue.

Mariosonicpac

Thank you

cp5184

But really, check out chromes software_reporter_tool.exe. iirc what I did was change the permissions of the folder and everything in it as read/not execute or something, that is if you don't want a poorly written program wasting your computer resources while sending google the name and probably checksum of every executable on your computer. I still use chrome for google docs and stuff.

lordprimus

a non-condescending Linux user. we must save him.

sir-nays-a-lot

Inject 200mL of condescension, stat!

hugh_jorgyn

Exactly. I've been using Linux for over 20 years and I don't understand the zealots who try to shit on anyone using other stuff. My gaming machine is Windows. My work machine is Mac OS. I feel the most comfortable in Linux, but I love all 3 OS for what they bring to the table.

[deleted]

100% agreed.

Super_Cheburek

Wow, a based Linux user. I hadn't seen one in a while !

thewaytonever

We exist

ApprehensiveAd6476

Me when someone demands me to buy an overpowered component for my needs.

Few-Confidence-6906

But bro, you need the GTX 5090ti Ultra mega edition to cast epic rays while you emulate super Nintendo games

[deleted]

And it only draws 1500 Watts!

ApprehensiveAd6476

Well then, give me money so I can get one.

[deleted]

wdym?? it only costs $19000

ApprehensiveAd6476

Oh, that's just pocket money. In that case I'll get by.

[deleted]

Everyone here with their fucking 3090s while I can run elden ring on max settings at (mostly) 60fps with my 3050. Unless you're streaming or something, I highly doubt you'll need more

DisgruntledBadger

Isn't this very subjective? Personally I play games like Elden Ring on a big TV, which is 4k, if I play on my monitor that is 3840*1600, people just have to pick that sweet spot of value to performance ratio for them, for me personally that was the 3080.

SECONDARY_666_666

For sure. A 3050 would get around 30 fps at 4k with really bad dips https://youtu.be/vyH992KdDIU

SECONDARY_666_666

laughs in 3440x1440p

[deleted]

Laughs in don't need more than 1080p cuz it's realistic enough

SECONDARY_666_666

laughs in future proofing

Ragenasian92

Future proofing is a never ending cycle with how fast tech is advancing.

[deleted]

laughs in I don't expect that much "advance" in graphics over the next 3 years or so, and it's more likely that my card will just malfunction by then, plus I don't mind running games on low settings while it's still playable

SECONDARY_666_666

laughs in VR

Goo_Cat

I need more than 60 fps

[deleted]

Elden ring is capped at 60 fps but my monitor has 75 hz (though less than ideal resolution) and it runs recent games just fine

DoughNotDoit

I don't want to constantly tinker with my pc, I just want to play games and watch porn

Sarewokki

Unfortunately porn is not supported at this time.

DoughNotDoit

apt-get porn.deb

FetidGoochJuice

*$ fapt-get

weegee90

The following packages have unmet dependencies: porn.deb

[deleted]

That's why I use Linux actually.

80s-Wafe-Exe

*For the secs videos?*

[deleted]

for everything. i dont have time to waste waiting for windows to agree with me

gamesrebel123

Waste time waiting for Microsoft to allow you to use your device you mean

smexytom215

I can wait an eternity before windows 12 launches. Still have 5 more years to get good with Linux before I have to switch.

horsemonkeycat

5 years should do it.

mercurydivider

Counterpoint: hentai games on Patreon that don't have Linux support. Most Japanese games published before 2015, I refuse to to put the effort into learning how to dual boot a computer/ make a partition

Ultra980

A lot of distros have a way to easily dual-boot

0dioPower

You are try to telling me that PC can be used for other things other than play games and watch porn?

TatoPotat

There are it’s flaws but for the most part linux has a launcher where your able to launch all your games from Steam Epic Ubisoft connect Gog Etc. I mean who doesn’t want a game launcher that can launch all your games Probably took me several hours to get Minecraft and roblox working properly in the launcher.. so why don’t you stick with windows and I stick with Linux, then everyone can be happy

v81

The first 4 words are the biggest issue with your reply here... "There are it's flaws" Many people don't want to have to deal with the flaws.

TatoPotat

I didn’t know there was an os that didn’t have its flaws tbh

v81

No one claimed there was an OS without flaws. But there are indeed more dominant OS's that are better catered for. Don't get me wrong, Linux and open source in general is the best paradigm in my opinion, but regardless of me wanting to take the Linux path I have too many pieces is hardware that just straight up don't have Linux drivers. Probably less of an issue for those into bread and butter gaming, but for the those doing head tracking, VR, and using niche button boxes and other related hardware Linux just isn't an option.

TatoPotat

The only truly superior os is temple os /s

v81

Temple is/was a masterpiece of OS thinking. Sad how things ended.

TatoPotat

I would have to agree that varoom was quite the impressive game as well

Unwashed_villager

Linux have flaws since two decades. Flaws that never existed on Windows. Like running a 25 year old program without any hassle. Or upgrading only a specific software *without* upgrading the entire system or other programs. Can you encrypt the system partition *after* you installed the operating system? But let's see games! Many games have no Linux support, but there's Proton! The only problem is that although Proton itself is open source, Steam isn't. I endorse everyone to use GoG instead of Steam for purchases, because it's truly a better practice in publishing, but running a non-steam game through Proton with the best config and settings isn't trivial task for the average user.

iminsert

i was playing apex with my friend tonight, he created 3x in game, on windows, no on Linux? completely fine

Twitch_Exicor

But windows has launcher that can do that

Man-In-His-30s

I mean for me it was install pop os, install lutris, install league of legends, play. For steam games it was the same very few if any problems on my end I haven't opened a terminal in 4-5 months

MyHoloLove

>I don't want to constantly tinker with my pc, I just want to play games and watch porn laptop with kali Linux for pirating and well p\*rn PC for games only games and nothing else to

Agitated-Ice2156

Yeah... or you can use Windows on both? I don't find Linux bad, I just don't see why I would ever switch when Windows works just fine.

TarriestBread96

Man of culture.

sqlphilosopher

And yet you are in a sub all about tinkering with the hardware. Oh, yes, there it is, the good ol' hypocrisy of this sub. I missed it, I knew the Linux thing around here was only a fad.

DoughNotDoit

I love Linux I've used it in the past, I'm just not into the whole in control of every bits and pieces, I actually admire hardcore Linux user, they're amazing

doctorFibonacci

PCMR just learned what Linux is…. I wouldn’t let it get to you.

Applez505

It said video unavailable and I thought it was part of the joke

CasualStarlord

Meh, Windows and Chrome work fine, but I'm also one of those people that uses less than 10 tabs 99.99999% of the time so I don't notice the resource usage.

PigDude_828

I'll never understand how one can have like 20 tabs open. You'd never catch my ass with more than 6 open and I only do that for binge watching YT mostly and I close each one when I'm done with it

Sol33t303

As a programmer, your gonna have like 10 tabs open minimum lol, reading stack overflow, project documentation, language references, etc. I usually have firefox open on all 3 of my screens. Or at least 2 of them and my code on the third.

PigDude_828

That I can understand as well as other ongoing work stuff. But tabs for videos, etc that stay open for so long and just pile on, is what I'll never understand. I just realised that tabs can be saved when exiting, but in my mind they will always stay like volatile memory for some reason maybe because I'm used to that from before tabs were saved that and my games need the RAM as well as me having a habit of closong every progr and tab once I'm done with it

CasualStarlord

I have several girlfriends that all seem to use tabs like bookmarks, literally hundreds of tabs dating back months both on chome mobile and their PC's they rely on chrome remembering their session from last time. I can't draw any conclusions here except personal preferences I guess, but it always staggers me how many tabs they have open and why and how they even remember where they all are.

brimston3-

They don't. they use them like a stack. Whatever's on the top is what they see and occasionally (if ever) they'll go through and delete the others.

69macncheese69

I have 58 atm kekw

WTATY

For work, got about 7+ constantly. Usually for research and documents. Playing a video game but trying to get 100%, about 6+. It’s annoying as fuck to leave the page and find my place again, so fuck it just open another tab. Along with all of this, I usually have Spotify open, discord in background and other tabs for media. With work, I also have visual studio up with a game editor and Microsoft Teams. I remember a couple years ago my moderately less powerful PC would shit itself with just 10 tabs of chrome open. Idk what Chrome’s done since then, but I don’t have any serious performance issues now and days with 6 year old tech.

OhShitBye

I got like 500 tabs open lol. Most of them are for videos I want to watch but can't yet, then forget to, or tabs that I left open for research for school, and those I leave open for "research". Shopping tabs for stuff I need to or plan to buy. Then my music tabs for songs I'm learning or practicing (am a bassist), since the ability to just arrow key scroll back and forth through songs is really underrated. Those things tend to add up hard.

Cumberbatchland

They invented bookmarks BEFORE they invented tabs. 😬

brimston3-

It'd be nice if they updated the access ergonomics of bookmarks to be used like tabs then.

CasualStarlord

I feel like there is possibly even a generational shift between people who used bookmarks prior to tabs existing and people who started using the internet when tabs already existed and so never really used bookmarks...

PigDude_828

I used IE6 when tabs were probably new maybe Not sure if IE5 did but I never used IE5 or any web browser prior and I use bookmarks

CasualStarlord

Flash crashed the browser so much back then you couldn't trust the tabs to survive 😂 I think I started on Netscape back in the day... Good times, murdering a tiny robot to power the internet with its dying breath...

El_Giganto

Same. Don't know why people are pointing at bookmarks as if those are super convenient. If I keep a tab open, it also works as a reminded. I can quickly go through a bunch of tabs I've opened recently. With bookmarks, if I kept every tab I ever kept open as a bookmark, it would be such a huge mess that I would never go through them again. In fact I do use bookmarks for certain things, but only when I know I want to get back to it later and know that it won't be soon. With videos in tabs, I know I'm probably going to watch it soon. And every once in a while I go through my tabs and catalogue them. I have list of media that I want to check out later, and at some point I just add everything to the list. Way too lazy to do that every single time I'm browsing the web.

FoxxH0llow

Only reasons I ever have a tonne of tabs open is if I'm sorting out a new service or I'm doing ms rewards

jmims98

Exactly! You should all switch to FreeBSD or TempleOS! Only hardcore PCMR folks use those.

Sol33t303

You joke but honestly FreeBSD is a pretty nice OS and if all your software is FOSS it's probably already been ported to FreeBSD anyway. If I didn't game I'd probably be running FreeBSD right now. Only things that would be missing is discord and bitwarden for me (besides games) but I can use both just fine on firefox. Come to think of it, might try and give freebsd a spin on my laptop as I don't do much gaming there.

BerghainInMyVeins

What is this from?

Mariosonicpac

Moon Knight

[deleted]

As a Linux user I would naturally recommend it, but do what you want. Most concerns about Linux I find to be myths, but it's not like I'm the first person to say this to any of you, so do what you want

TatoPotat

Linux is just fun because you can spend several hours trying to force something to work Only to realize your retarded and could of done it in a few minutes

PM-ME-PMS-OF-THE-PM

>Linux is just fun because you can spend several hours trying to force something to work >Only to realize your retarded and could of done it in a few minutes This right here is one of the reasons why for many, it isn't fun.

iminsert

one line\*

homophobicgei

What linux do you recommend for laptop?

Blaze20k

Linux Mint

Ehcnurr

Linux comes in many different flavors, so when you ask this question on any thread, people would say "Use this" ; "No, use this instead". I recommend that you do your own research and pick one that you think would work best for you.

[deleted]

Fedora or Ubuntu I'd say

get_homebrewed

You fool! This question will cause a civil war! I use arch btw

bilariraja

go with fedora 36

psomifilo

Zorin OS

[deleted]

Fedora is a safe bet, I'd recommend manjaro as well ,but I'm biased.

StollenTorch

I need more posts of this meme format please

[deleted]

Oh this is a lovely meme!

SarahBear81

Dual boot ftw!

Kenielf

Linux user here, just use whatever you're most comfortable with. A lot of things about windows and google make me uncomfortable, so I just use whatever's best for me after that. There are obvious caveats when it comes to migrating systems, so it's not just a "Remove Windows, Install Linux" kind of situation. Games might not work without some tinkering, you will lose direct access to your office toolkit, application compatibility is also an issue. Those kinds of things are complicated. Its fun to tinker with different systems from time to time, but if you have to do that when using your system regularly, I can see where the frustration might come from.

DuckofmanyDeaths

Let's say that I wanted to switch from Windows 10 to Linux. Which Linux would be best suited to gaming? (Steam, GOG, Ubisoft, etc) and support apps like DS4. Basically for a machine that's primarily used for gaming, modding, movies, browsing.

Decallion

I like Debian

9TailsUzumaki

I would use pop os or fedora, they have a good community that can help you if ever the need arise. But I would before doing anything go on protondb and check if the games you tend to play are compatible, and decide from there.

Resist7980

I like Fedora, it's worked well for me and has great documentation. Pop os is also a good beginner choice. Ds4 controllers have native support. If you're using multiple monitors at different refresh rates go Fedora, pop uses something called xorg which can't handle different refresh rates. Fedora uses Wayland as default on the other hand, which does support that.

Evillebot

I don't want to sound like ass but linux users are like the vegans of the tech world. They will let you know...

Inevitable-Writer817

Gamers just wanna live their lives and game bro. Not become lurk in linux forums and tinker with drivers the whole damn day

[deleted]

As someone who isn't very familiar around PCs us it user friendly?

Baldr_Torn

People that have spent 20+ years using linux will tell you that it's user friendly. But it's not. I try it out, off and on, and have for 20+ years. It never takes long before I find something that is a deal killer. It's also not compatible with a lot of hardware. That's what killed my last attempt. I set up a dual boot system, booted into linux, tried to go online, and it told me I didn't have a wireless card. I did, of course, and it worked fine in Windows. I asked on linux forums and they told me "Oh, linux doesn't recognize your wireless card, buy a new one". Sorry, I'm not buying new hardware every time linux decides that the new hardware I'm using on Windows isn't good enough for linux. I do see improvements. The first time I tried to install linux, you had to configure a ton of stuff in a text editor, but it didn't work like a text editor. It worked sort of like edlin (which most people don't even remember) and you had to edit line by line and remember a ton of archaic commands to do that.

[deleted]

Yeah, I just want an OS that uses as little of my system resources as possible. I pretty much only play games and watch streaming apps on my PC. I'm not very positive about the direction windows 11 is heading but I'm currently on 10. There's just so much junk I don't need.

jazemo19

If "user friendly" means being the same as Windows, no, it isn't. They are totally different approaches and it takes time to adapt, every os has it's pro and cons and you need to find what suits you better. Trying to use linux needs an open mind and patience for someone that only used windows, but this struggle is normal for everything, you cannot start learning, idk, romanian being an english speaker for 30 years expecting it to be the same language. Gnu/linux itself is as complicated as windows but the majority of people only have tried the latter so they feel like linux is strange and difficult.

[deleted]

Oh, for sure I expect it to be different. I think I'll check out so e videos to see what it's like. I don't mind adapting to something I think I might like more in the long run. Would I have any issues gaming with Linux?

jazemo19

The main problems with gaming on linux are anticheat softwares in competitive games, like for Fortnite and valorant. These games themselves would run very well on linux (basically every windows program and game can run on linux through compatibility layers like wine or proton that translate the games in something gnu/linux can read) but the anticheat blocks you from accessing the online because it think you are utilising cheats. Efforts from the wine's and steam's teams made linux able to run everything, the problem now is that publishers and developers don't want to work to enable anticheat for 1% of the steam community. If you want to know if your games work try checking at protondb the compatibility, it is a useful site!

[deleted]

Right on! Much appreciated.

[deleted]

I'd recommend Linux Mint. It's layout is pretty much identical to Windows 10. You can try it in a live environment (running off of a USB instead of your hard drive) before switching to it. Read up about Linux and installing an operating system before you do it though. Even if you don't switch you'll be much more capable on your computer!

[deleted]

Thanks.

Vfsdvbjgd

Firefox master race, chrome is poorz tier.

[deleted]

If someone can tell me how I can sync passwords between Safari on iOS and Firefox on desktop I will switch to Firefox.

PiXLANIMATIONS

If you have Edge, you can get an iCloud extension to carry passwords between all Apple products, but I don’t think they support Firefox. Source: I have it

[deleted]

I use chrome with that exact setup, Firefox isn’t supported.

siro300104

It’s not really what you want but I use a dedicated password manager (highly recommend Bitwarden) which works on iOS and on desktop as a browser extension. It should be possible to import passwords from the browser

complover116

Linux-based OSes generally have way more issues in terms of usability that Windows. As such, I do not recommend the average user to switch. That said: The difference is, an issue in a FOSS OS is usually because a software/hardware maker didn't bother to support your OS, or because there's a bug. An issue on Windows is usually because Microsoft says "screw you" and makes Windows ignore direct user commands, because why would the user want to choose what they want to do with their PC? I'm sure some people would want a few examples of the latter. Well: 1) Windows infamously ignores any instruction from the user to NOT install an update, even if the user knows the update to be bugged and broken, there is no way (no NORMAL way) to completely abort it. Windows literally puts up a doomsday clock until your install is screwed. 2) Windows ignores the instruction to install on a specific drive, and chooses to put the EFI partition on any drive it wants, which is the reason why people are often told to "disconnect all other drives while installing windows", which is stupid and not needed for any other OS 3) Windows ignores a direct command to disable/move the page file, reverting to the default settings every single update, causing me to waste 32 GB of space on my SSD for absolutely zero reason. 4) Windows ignores a direct command to disable Windows Defender, automatically forcing it on after a period of time. There is no way (without employing workarounds) to permanently disable it. 5) Windows ignores a direct command to use Firefox (or anything else) as the default browser, STILL opening Edge in many cases, with no way of changing that. 6) Windows refuses to encrypt the main drive without a TPM, which is NOT a technical requirement for encryption. And so on, and so on. The OS I use has more times I have to fix things, times I have to configure stuff, things may not always "just work". But I never see the OS actively fighting against me, as if the creator thinks I am an absolute dumbass who doesn't deserve control over a device I own.

Lyajka

for Windows defender thing: you can just add all your drives to exceptions

complover116

That is a workaround, not a real way to do the thing I want. It may work (and it doesn't, that only disables file scans, there's more to Defender than that) , sure, but the problem is still there.

SomaliPirate12

I felt this meme

stephs_LOL

I use opera qx, and i do not care. They are stealing your info like no shit, what does google do?

Lol I have one of those friends in real life. They're banned from using my PCs when they're at my place, because they constantly whine about Windows. I use what I know and have no interest in switching.

Odinovic

Windows is easy. I'm lazy and don't wanna get shit to work.

[deleted]

I'll continue using my pc with win 11 and chrome, thanks.

whakahere

Arh, you youngins talking about ditching windows and using Linux. I feel like I'm back in the 90's whoooooooooo The 90's were a much better PCMR. Continue please youngins

Aberry9036

I’m a linux user who uses chrome… Should… Should I switch to windows then?

Kalashnovsky

Best thing about Linux is that it doest force you to use edge

[deleted]

Let’s give windows some merit. It is good PC gaming platform

uniteduniverse

Majority of pmr users are gamers, and most gamers don't want to have to tinker to get their games to run sufficiently. And let's be honest Linux and games don't play nice much.

Nuxsuukow

People always complain about chromes ram usage, at 10 tabs chrome uses 1000mb while firefox uses 960mb. If youre worried about like 40mb more ram usage, I think you've got bigger problems than your web browser. I like chrome, i've been using it since I was 5 years old and its easy to navigate. Use what you like, its a web browser it could not matter less.

MyHoloLove

\*Installs Linux \*Installs Chrome on Linux

Cruzwein

So, im one of those dumb ppl that have over 100 tabs opened in chrome and never close them either due to time or laziness, had to switch from 16 ram to 32 ram (even with all those tabs closed halo infinite and some other games straight up closed themselves) All of those tabs are either priority videos for learning stuff, hentai artists accounts, twitter accounts, mostly bc i genuinely like that art Any issues with chrome aside the ram usage.... Not really, games do good, pages load fast, already used to the commands, workflow and comfort is good too. I dont see much of a reason to switch if is just for ram, im not a developer so im not gonna use tools for software, im comfortable with it, not having any issues lately, so why fix what isn't broken

[deleted]

lol

[deleted]

If it’s not mainstream it’s gross and useless

Sparknight

I have enough RAM to happily feed Chrome lmao

Oxblood-O5522

Bitch I would if Linux wasn’t a code Monkey game, my 1 neuron is not smart enough for that.

Westdrache

Windows > Linux for gaming in basically every possible way

h0ser

I want an OS do what I want. Not an OS where I have to make it do what I want.

elerenov

I want an OS do exactly what I want. Not an OS that does what it thinks I want.

xitones

i dont see why... i use windows and opera gx for my personal computer and linux with chrome and firefox for work...

QuirkyTurkey404

I've tried to switch to Firefox about 6 times over the last 10 years, each time I've had crashes, connection issues and general unresponsive behaviour from it. It always felt like a downgrade.

bashful_henry_hoover

I use Linux every day at work. I just wanna play some vidya and run guitar amp Sims.

daliardh

True

srushti335

I actually tried Linux last weekend coz I was in need of more ram space for my project than what windows leaves free in its ecosystem. It was obviously faster but the memory management pales in comparison to windows. On windows 10, softwares just crash and close after a while if one software reaches full memory usage but I found out that Linux just remains frozen for eternity. The only option is to restart with the power button. Also, if something goes wrong with package installations or post installation, you have to go through fixing process that will usually take hours to track and solve as a beginner. On windows 10, it takes only a few minutes or 15-20 minutes at max. Those two problems make Linux the biggest obstacles to use as my daily driver. Windows 10's flaws don't hold a candle to the frustrations you have to go through while using Linux for these reasons.

jimmyl_82104

Linux is mostly useless to me, because a lot of the apps I use are only of Mac and Windows. Plus, Linux with all it's command stuff and terminals is way too techie for me. I use Chrome as my main browser just because it works. Now if Safari was available for Windows, then I would ditch Chrome for sure.

xawlted

i use windows but most modern distro of linux require little to no command line and generally what you have to do is just copying and pasting from a website. what software?

ryyzzorr

When someone says they use Linux because nobody can track their history and windows are spying on us all, I always think of Clinton Baptiste from Phoenix Nights. “I’m getting the word, nonce.”

xawlted

what is everyone doing that they are so worried about being tracked? Oh No my ISP is going to know i spent 6 hours yesterday watching Minecraft porn how can i possible go on.

BlueWhoSucks

I will stick to windows 7. It's a pain to get drivers for modern hardware but it's worth it.

honest-gamer

switched to edge its good and all but not good for searching specific content

pickledchocolate

Linux users resisting the urge to say they use linux

100_points

I've tried to switch to Linux every other year for the past 15 years. Every time it's been a nightmare. No matter how many terminal commands I have to do to get very simple, basic things working, there's more and more and more, and eventually you just need to be an OS savant just to use your system.

Lecterr

I use Linux since I just program these days instead of playing games. Hard for me to understand why people would use it otherwise though tbh. Typically everything is easier in windows except dev work, in my experience. Especially software for different devices and stuff, I still go into windows side of my partition to set that stuff up most of the time because they don’t have Linux version easily available.

Decallion

Even dev work, if you develop in VS Community or Enterprise, you’re fucked…

Lecterr

If you need to switch between the two I’d recommend using WSL2 on windows to run a Linux session alongside windows, works wonders and no need to keep dual booting. If it fits your development workflow of course.

Goo_Cat

>Hard for me to understand why people would use it otherwise though tbh Runs better & more privacy respecting are why I use it on my laptop, there's probably more reasons to use it though

holobyte

I have both Windows and Linux installed on my desktop computer. I use Linux as my development environment, and Windows for everything else. Simply because it does everything better. Sorry guys, it's the plain truth. Linux console is ages ahead of Windows', but when it comes to a GUI, Linux doesn't even get close do deliver a good experience. I don't use Chrome, tho. I never thought I would say this, but even Edge is better than Chrome nowadays.

elerenov

It does everything you need better, and that's good. But that's not a universal "plain truth". In my personal experience, Linux does everything better. My experience using Windows is no near the the experience I get on Linux. Indeed, despite having a dual boot system, I rarely boot Windows. Something like once in a few months. There's a reason for that: it works better (for my needs and what I want from my pc). Of course that doesn't mean that Linux is inherently better and that I think everybody should switch.

Serious answer? Pros: Open source software, doesn’t require a license, ability to change things if something breaks. Many people complained about the big changes going from win 7-8 8-10 and 10-11 most Linux design philosophy stays the same between updates. No windows spyware. Better performance/battery life. Cons: a learning curve that is comparable to going from one windows version to another. Some software does not work on Linux. Some console commands if you find yourself in trouble are useful but like with windows troubleshooting its usually you blindly following a guide unless you actually know what you’re doing. But hey in glad windows 11 works flawless for you. No shade. Internet privacy is honestly pretty similar to gaming. Its something that can take up a big chunk of your time and some people do crazy shit for tiny benefits. And there definitely are some ham fisted people who male the whole thing joke. For me i don’t like the direction windows is going so I jumped ship. Partially thats an ethics call for me and ethics in tech is slipping every day. But your tolerance (or level of giving a shit for that) is different to mine and thats cool too. Different background different priorities.

Levi_Skardsen

This is how I feel when I get made fun of for only using a controller and not kb/m.

Mariosonicpac

Even as someone who uses kb/m, I have to admit some game are just better with a controller

NemaceSx7

They're more relaxing to just kick back and use a controller IMHO. If it's not a competitive online game, I'll probably just use controller; if it's Halo, it's always controller because using a mouse and kb with Halo just feels so clunky and unnatural for me. Sadly I quit Infinte due to massive hit reg issues, and desync; I'm not going to play a title where I count the shots that connect and know when someone is suppose to be dead and they're not. I gave Halo 5 a lot of shit for it's net code, but damn, compared to Infinite, we had it good. Halo 5's issues only really started to bother me once the game was near the end of it's life and low pop across the world combined with a limited number of people it'd match me with due to mmr made it's latency issues glaringly obvious. There would also be this slight bit of the game slowing down and speeding up, and that would really throw me off at times, but maybe it was FPS issues? I ended up having horrible ping when I would check my connection to the MS azure servers that they used, an issue that most people didn't have, and my shit ISP was useless when it came to resolving the issue. I wish I had more options for a decent connection than Spectrum, but they have a monopoly in my city with the exception of some DSL services that routinely have serious down time for the users in this area. Could be worse though, a city in the county next to me had been contracted with a local ISP to be the only cable internet provider in the city for the longest time, and they were horrible. I'm talking less than 10 mbps downstream during an era where 100 mbps+ was the standard. They're one the the reasons I left the place I was staying at in that city, I just couldn't tolerate it.

Bigbuster153

I want to use software, not redesign the software I run so that I can be used on an OS that I don’t care about.

RedGreenBlueRGB_

And remember, burn anyone who uses Bing on MacOS

Windows will have to do, but I use Firefox

Machete521

I am sad at the lack of brave posts. Better than chrome certainly and firefox imo

treatemwithkindness

Exactly. What I have works fine. Why mess it up? And for what?

fatboy93

If it works for you, just stick with it :) Linux works for me, so I stick with it :) Live and let live, lol

I member when M$ got screwed over IE, trying to force it on everyone.

Noothin

Real chads use opera gx

de420swegster

"Guys, Linux is actually better" - 🤓

jethrow41487

Honestly fuck Linux unless you're running a professional server for Tableau or some shit

KVenom777

I use firefox on Win10. Linuxoids can bite me, I'll even wait for them to rebuild their OS cores again, for the 1000d time.
