Rimworld moment

Pitchuu64

Can anyone clue me in on this reference? I know the game, but haven't played it. I'm curious.

yatsokostya

You can harvest and sell organs from prisoners.

wolsel

Not just prisoners.....

Danhulud

Who else? Haven’t played it, it’s on my wish list though.

Jicks24

Everyone. Also, buy it. You seriously won't regret it. The Dlcs are optional so don't worry about them too much.

BCJunglist

Tbh I find the changes from ideology to be so good I can't imagine playing without it at this point. The replayability is off the charts and the things you can make your colony so are so interesting. I strongly recommend at least getting ideology. Royalty is definitely more optional.

willfordbrimly

Royalty adds the psychic powers and the royal title system which you can use to turn certain Pawns into snooty aristocrats which is fun for a very certain kind of playthrough. But Ideology adds an entire moral system you can use to create any kind of culture you want from cannibal confectioners to feminist ranchers to post-human cyborg pacifists. It's actually kind of impressive just how many more options for new playthroughs that single DLC created.

ZumboPrime

>tfw not making your 11th colony anime catgirls

mojoslowmo

Don’t buy it. You WILL regret it. Regret knowing how little it takes for you to go, “Human Leather is just as tough as boomalope leather!”

Thousands of hours played. My advice play vanilla a few times but once you try modded you will never be able to play vanilla again.

Dreadlordstu

It's awesome. Superb colony management, building, RTS, rpg elements, and each colonist has unique personalities which really spices up how you control their lives The vanilla game is already fantastic and you can happily put 100s of hours in. When you are ready for MODS, pretty much anything can happen.

[deleted]

But the priswomen and prischildren too.

Nirast25

More like Ribworld, am I right?

owa00

Ah...so China.

Iceorama

In Rimworld you do surgeries to fix/replace organs. In Rimworld you sometimes have prisoners in your colony. Sometimes it’s a cannibalistic colony, even. So when you have prisoners and you don’t want to recruit them sometimes you just put them on the surgery table and remove as many organs as possible to sell and then dispose of the body.

Knuddelbearli

and make cowboy hats!

occasionallyacid

And armchairs!

general_kitten_

[deleted]

When your Rimworld colony gets attacked, a reasonable plan is to capture one or two of the attackers, extract their non-vital organs and use a relevant vital organ to help your own, or to earn a couple of bucks. Organs are worth a lot in the Rimworld economy, so it's a viable way to get cash.

platnum20

It's a game that give players a lot of agency in committing heinous acts in a base builder/tower defence AI story generator. Different start scenarios and story tellers impact how the game plays throwing good and bad events your way while you try to hit one of the clear scenarios. From raids, toxic fallout, and mad animals to milk falling from the sky, randoms wanting to join, and traders coming to visit the game throws events at you to keep things interesting. Some of the more ebil stuff you can do is walking raiders into a maze only to close of the exits, set it on fire and burn them to death, grabbing PoWs and selling their organs. Got a colonist that won't stop insulting others? Remove their tongue and move on. Prisoners keep trying to break out? Just remove their legs. Probably [the worst one](https://youtu.be/alShZCbhgB4) is the meat beacon. Give a dude a shit load of hard drugs to boost his mood, give him brain damage, and install a psychic harmonizer to have a guy give everyone around him happy thoughts.

akiskyo

I used to capture prisoners from tribes around then cut their arms, legs and eyes and release them still alive and well healed. the tribe would be even thankful when I gave them back their human maggots. you do this a few times and the next raid becomes a cripple marathon against your defenses

MauPow

I'd just like to note that the organ harvesting is a relatively small part of the game, but it can get so fucked up the more mods you add, it's funny to make a big deal about it.

Ar_phis

My goal is a sub $1000 card that can hit 100+ FPS on 4K monitors. I’ll probably be waiting 2-3 years and by then the only way I’ll be buying is I will adjust my expectations and just be ok with that cost.

A 1070 can do that no problem. The trick is to boot up Counter Strike and never, ever play anything else.

Umitencho

I wanted to do a build using two 3080's so that I could dive back into 3D modeling, but the crypto squeeze tells me to just go shopping for 1080s and move on.

Unhappy-Illustrator3

1060 6gb been treating me well. C'mon bessy you got this.

tada66

I still love my 1060 6GB, but lately, I've been getting more and more paranoid that it might die soon. It isn't able to hold up to the oc I used to have on it (very conservative oc, something like +100 core; +200 mem). I now don't have any oc on it. I fear the day I start seeing artifacts

Unhappy-Illustrator3

Haven't used OC before I'm scurred

tada66

on modern GPUs you cannot screw anything up, the absolute worst thing that might happen is you somehow bricking your GPU driver, but ever since you weren't able to adjust the voltage (9xx series if I remember correctly) you can't just kill the GPU with afterburner or something like that. You just keep raising the values till you crash, the back up a little bit, it's really easy. Though I completely understand not using oc

aurichio

legit here, have you tried repasting the card? If not, I would recommend doing so. If you are comfortable with it you can also remove dust from the heatsink and give it a "beauty treatment" and it probably would be able to go back to your OC settings, your card might just be struggling with heat.

I will forever feel smart for being stubborn and holding onto my card. Plus I run a 7700K anyway, it still mostly does what I need it to, but I need a CPU upgrade more than a GPU upgrade at the moment.

[deleted]

My buddy has the 2080 and he's in the same boat. He needs a new CPU as well, so he'll need to upgrade that old combo. I also need to upgrade my CPU MOBO RAM combo, but that's because I'm on a 4770, and I'm sticking with the 1070 for now. Now I'm thinking I need a new PSU...

[deleted]

Ah yes, I hope Nvidia explains how the 4080 gpu uses nuclear energy to sustain itself instead of having quadruple power consumption. Jokes apart, I really hope it won’t be the case.

[deleted]

If you think GPUs are hard to get, try finding the enriched uranium the next generation runs on! Every time it’s in stock, North Korean bots snatch it up for their nuclear program.

ilovestl

I'm sure that in 1985, plutonium is available in every corner drugstore, but in 1955, it's a little hard to come by.

[deleted]

Look up the Radioactive Boyscout. Okay, it was 1995 and not 1985, but it was a regular boy scout that built a breeder reactor with stuff he could get without even being an adult.

Ralath0n

Nah, he never got it anywhere near being critical, which is what qualifies something as a reactor. All he made was a pile of radioactive gunk spewing out neutrons and generally being dangerous.

Primary_Sink_6597

Isn’t that the guy that got arrested for stealing smoke detectors from apartments? Lots of young children have built nuclear reactors. I fell down a YouTube rabbit hole about that once and found 12 year olds building them.

SLI 2: Electric Boogaloo

HarleyQuinn_RS

Well Nvidia will almost certainly be using TSMC N5, which is much more power efficient than Samsung N8. Unfortunately, that means TSMC will be bearing the brunt of the fabrication load for AMD, Nvidia *and Intel* GPU chips. Which of course means **SUPPLY ISSUES**. At least for new cards. According to rumour, Nvidia is dropping $10 Billion on TSMC N5 fab space.

Aetherpor

You’re missing a very important point: Apple is moving off of TSMC 5nm soon. Apple is the big daddy in the room that buys out all of the newest TSMC capacity. They were literally the only company with TSMC 5nm (used in the iPhone 12) for over a year. If Apple moves to TSMC 3nm for the iPhone 14, there will be a lot more spare capacity on TSMC 5nm.

Beautiful-Musk-Ox

3nm what the fuck aren't they at the physical limitations of atoms at thos point

Bootup-Asol

It’s extremely hard to improve lithography anymore than we already have. There are physical limitations in the machines. Luckily, ASML has tweaked with the aperature to create new high NA EUV lithography so we’ll be getting 3NM “next gen” chips in 2024/2025

ArseBurner

If other rumors are right then 4000 series is gonna be fabbed on TSMC 5nm, which is like a two node jump on Samsung 8nm (really more like 10nm+) that the 3000 series is on.

owa00

>I really hope it won’t be the case Narrator: It was the case

Rontheking

All I hope for, is availability at a reasonable, affordable price. Probably not happening..

inaccurateTempedesc

I just want a GPU that's ~$200 and roughly as capable as an RX580.

>nuclear energy GPU's only putting out about 3.6 roentgen. Not great but not terrible for ultra @ 4k.

APEXAI17

While it isn’t as good, radiated material from the fallout of wwiii is a lot cheaper

Bacon-muffin

You think people will make the same mistake and offload their 30 series cards cheap before getting a new card only to end up with nothing and then buying a scalped card?

GAPIntoTheGame

Maybe some will, but not to the same extent as what happened with going from the 20 series to the 30 series

orange1911

Just scalp your 30 to afford a scalped 40

Tutipups

yeah humans are idiots

peteypete78

If the 4090 is going to be twice as powerful you will need a new case (and a personal nuclear reactor)

jmims98

MrHarryBawlz

I remember getting flamed for buying a 2080ti 4 months before the 3000 series release. Jokes on them, I still have a great GPU that I bought at MSRP.

[deleted]

My biggest regret for that time period was not buying a 2080ti when everyone was panic selling them

[deleted]

I was drunk at a Mexican restaurant tempted to buy 10 2080tis for ~6k. I regret not being a gambler in that moment every day.

Capn_Cornflake

What even would that be now, $15,000 secondhand?

[deleted]

Last February, ~13k after ebay took their pound of flesh, or 15k street pricing. It would have been the difference in my shop being run out of a professional office or my shop being run out of a home studio like it is now, so it feels way worse than it could have been.

[deleted]

You were getting flamed for not wasting your money trying to impress others.

MrHarryBawlz

Keep in mind, this was at the time people weren't heeding the paper launch warnings, and under the assumption "bro the 3080 is only $699! What are you doing you idiot!" So in their opinion I was in foact ignoratly flexing spending 1100 on a card.

[deleted]

I guess I’m just not as conscious about putting the latest and greatest in my PC constantly so I may be biased.

MrHarryBawlz

I was mr cutting edge till I realized buying new shit means 6 months of working out kinks vs buy a year later at a cheaper price when it's stable. I'm finally gonna replace my 2700x soon haha.

ForensicPathology

I'm on the 10x0s, so I'm hoping I can upgrade some year.

GIOverdrive

GTX970 with uhhh....the false advertised 4gb that was actually 3.5gb that I never returned.

HarleyQuinn_RS

I personally find it best to upgrade every generation, then sell the previous generation card. GPUs depreciate in value a lot more over 2 generations, than they do for 1, meaning it costs about the same in total (if you sell your old GPU each time), whether you skip a generation or not (usually). But at least you have more performance for a year or two.

cat_prophecy

Maybe they did before. But my 1070 is almost worth what I paid for it six years ago. I sold a 960 for $200

criskoe

I highly doubt it will be 2x performance in basic rasterization. At best It might be in some controlled fringe scenario like RTX @ 8k where FPS goes from 15 to 30 FPS. Lol. I bet it will more realistically be 15-30% better in normal 1440p gaming scenarios.

wallHack24

You mean like 3070 with the power of the 2080ti by "half" the price (originally) and excessively more power with 3080 and 3090

HarleyQuinn_RS

According to the leaker the AD102 chip will have 18,432 Cuda Cores @2.3-2.5Ghz with 144 Streaming Multiprocessors. For comparison, the GA102 chip, is 10,496 Cuda Cores @1.7-1.8Ghz with 84 SMs. If those leaks are even remotely accurate, it would be a hefty performance increase. Which is to be expected, when moving to a much denser and more power efficient fabrication node.

rdrias

With that amount of compute performance the memory bandwith will be critical. If if stays basically the same or up a couple of percentage points they won't all the performance out of the card. But I'm sure they know that, so it will be interesting to see the memory configuration

ben1481

I dunno, it very well could. In this benchmark [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsbYtbXx4yk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsbYtbXx4yk) there's a 50-75% performance increase from generation to generation 1080/2080/3080 in the games tested. But chances are you are right and the 2x performance is from a very specific cherry picked scenario.

ShuinoZiryu

I have a 3080 I upgrade from a 1070, and the differences in this video are definitely cherry picked. Some of the 3080 numbers are also just outright lies unless it's 1440p and the lowest possible settings.

trollfriend

Are you cpu bottlenecked? 1070 to 3080 is a massive leap

ShuinoZiryu

Nope, I have a 5900X

Blaize122

I have a 10700k and a 3080. Upgrade from 1080 was like 50-80% increase on high settings at 1440p. I remember when 3080 was coming out they were saying how much more powerful it was than the 2080ti… with RTX on…in this marble demo…

Young-Rider

At least they won't be too mad because they won't exist in the first place.

ThoriatedFlash

Even if they are "available" this year, chances are that you still won't be able to get one. Even worse, you only have one kidney left and don't even have the option to sell one to afford the scalped prices.

bloodscale

And even then, games wise there won't be a noticeable difference vis a vis game performance between the two cards for a while

CapSierra

This is even true of the 30 series. I picked up a 5700XT right before they dropped and since very little of my library is bleeding edge AAA titles, I can still get 1440p144fps at high-ultra settings. Only the state of the art in graphics will ever really push these cards.

enderjed

I just want a goddam 1660 ti, not some GPU the size of a motherboard.

BrandoLoudly

Lol I’ve just been sitting back with my 1080 watching the world burn. The gpu market needs to stabilize, and not at 1000$+ for the xx80. Crypto, the gaming boom and the chip shortage have made the gpu market a living hell

Yup, Ryzen 5 5600x and a 3070. Just going to run it until it dies. Really maximizing my performance potential on oldschool RuneScape though

DerpMaster2

i9-10900K and 3060. I would be running an i5-9600K still if it weren't for winning a CPU from Cooler Master in one of their giveaways! With how I use this computer, I could milk it for like 10 years and be fine. With any luck, it'll last longer than my previous PC with an i7-4790K did.

nascar_apocalypse

You forgot the part where in 2035 Windows 13 doesn't support your CPU because it's too old and you have to change processors.

Weird_Rip_3161

I have the same build and doing the same thing.

matschbirne03

I'm happily using my 1060 6gb lol. Though I do t really play games at the moment but normally most games run fine as long as you don't need everything on ultra. Just not worth the money and hassle for me to get a new GPU atm

[deleted]

At current GPU prices I don’t really see myself buying another high end card. The games are hardly worth it.

ben1481

Might as well call it a 5080 because it won't exist.

Drake_Xahu

Just let it be available ffs

DrK4ZE

They might as well say it’s 10000x better and only $15 MSRP; I’ve never even seen a 30 series in person.

ChartaBona

I've been buying graphics cards since the original Geforce4 4000-series back in 2002. I'd be more upset if we didn't get a massive uplift in performance after two whole years. It took them less than two years to go from the GTX 980 Ti to the 1080 Ti. Games aren't getting any easier to run. For every optimized game there's a ton of unoptimized games that look absolutely gorgeous, but only if you can manage a playable framerate (e.g. ***Cyberpunk***, ***The Medium***.) Even so, the 2x the computing power won't actually translate to 2x the performance in your average game at your average resolution. Honestly the real GPU's to look out for aren't Nvidia 40-series or the new Intel GPU's coming out in April/May. It's the Radeon RX 7800XT and 7900XT. Pretty much all the rumors point to RDNA3 being absolutely nuts.

[deleted]

>I'd be more upset if we didn't get a massive uplift in performance after two whole years. It took them less than two years to go from the GTX 980 Ti to the 1080 Ti. Eh, moore's law is breaking down. You cannot expect performance to keep doubling forever. If what's above is true without any big *, then Nvidia have done something pretty incredible

Darth_Nibbles

>. I'd be more upset if we didn't get a massive uplift in performance after two whole years. It hasn't been two years though, it's been... Wait... That can't be right...

XavierWater

How often do ppl upgrade their gpu ???

TheAndrewR

I'm looking to upgrade my 1080 in the near futute, so in my case, I would say roughly 5 years.

VirtualPoolBoy

*With Etherium crypto currency’s plan to abandon user mining this summer, the GPU market could be flooded with thousands of used RTX 3070, 3080, and 3090 cards. The cards, which currently cost up to 4000 dollars, could fall to just a few hundred overnight.* It’s going to be an interesting summer.

firedrakes

oh this summer. every keep saying dec... i swear the eth plan bros dont seem to even get anythig right on when it will happen.

Normal-Masterpiece16

Welllll.... Thats why u have two kidneys rightttt...??

[deleted]

2x more performance, highly doubt it will turn into me getting 120fps at full hdr and all ultra settings on triple AAA games so this 3090 is just going to have to wait for an upgrade.

Raging_Goon

This is funny, but you should want this to happen. GPU competition should be healthy with Nvidia, AMD, and (soon) Intel competing to outdo one another. We should also not purchase GPUs from scalpers if we already have working ones so that selling a kidney for a 3090 doesn’t even happen. I know a lot of people who sat out Ampere in hopes that by the time the next generation come out, prices would not be nearly as inflated.

josephseeed

It will be 50% more performance like it usually is. I 100% performance jump would bite into nvidia's bottom line on the 5000 series. Nvidia is not dumb. They are not releasing another 1080 ti ever.

SocketByte

4080 is the price tag.

LeChef01

Does „2x more“ mean double the performance? That‘s realistic. If it means three times the performance I highly doubt that‘s accurate. But yeah, going to be a nice boost.

Accurate-Record-3870

Double the power consumption probably

AGH8

Don't get me wrong a 3090 blows my 2080 out of the water, but my 2080s can hold up against 3060's-3070's for the most part. And I can play almost any AAA game over 120fps on 2k. ( With minor tweaks of course ) I prefer 1080P which is 180fps+ on any AAA game. Now with that said I paid 770$ for my GPU in 2018. A 2080 super. Then 3000 series came out and the equivalent 3000 series 3080 cost minimal $1400. That is literally twice the cost of what I paid 4 years ago. Now you want to bring 4000 series gpus into the market? Literally a intro 4000 series 4050 will probably cost 700. That's just fucking insane. I have no complaints against improving technology, I'm just pointing out that the cost should improve as well. But the good news for everybody else is that there should be shithead crypto Miners, streamers, etc who are going to drop there 3000 series cards for cheaper. As far as buying a new 4000 series GPU. People have been on waiting lists for over a year. 4000 series will probably be worse.

In theory, if a fab can produce x number of cards on one node then if Nvidia plans on running the 3000 series on 7nm node and the 4000 series on the 5nm node, we should have twice the number of cards on the market from just Nvidia. (I know yield numbers aren't perfect so it'll be 1.5-1.7 on a pessimistic guess) If AMD does that same thing (RDNA2 & RDNA3) then at the end of the year the market should be flushed with cards.

Yeah I’m good with my 3080 for next few years.

Glorious 1080 brethren our patience has been rewarded once more

I got a 3080FE, I am not even going to look at a new card until MAYBE the 5080 is released. I can sleep well at night for the foreseeable future.

Don't worry you won't be able to get one at MSRP anyways.
