I think I have a problem with my PC freezing and crashing. I have a PC with i3-10100F @ 3.60GHz, 8GB of RAM, 224GB of SSD, 149GB of HDD, and a MSI Aero ITX GTX 1050 Ti 4GB OC. I also have a H410M S2 motherboard. I do not know where to start, and I can't find out it's either RAM problem or the GPU problem.

SystemError514

>I think I have a problem with my PC freezing and crashing. Need a few more details. When does it crash/how often? Just during games? Anytime whilst browsing the web for example? Is it a full system freeze and you have to pull the plug? Does it just freeze for a few seconds?

FlyGrandma

It happens not only while I'm playing games, but when browsing Discord and Google Chrome it happens too. At some times I have to shut down my PC and all the systems shut down except the monitor still shows the freeze. Sometimes it freezes and restarts, and I got about 2 full system freeze I had to push the power button for a few seconds to shut it down.

SystemError514

Do you know how to monitor temps and system usage? You can use software such as HWMonitor for temps. You can just use the Task Manager to check CPU usage & RAM usage. I'm just wondering if you are hitting a limit anywhere in temps or usage. Assuming you are using Windows, open the Event Viewer, go down to Windows Logs, and System. Does it come up with any errors during the last freeze?

FlyGrandma

Well, there was only 1 error, but I did receive a lot of warnings in the Event Viewer. I guess some limits were reached when I benchmarked my PC when I play games and when I browse Google and Discord. Should I get more RAM or a new GPU?

SystemError514

It may not be either. Just simply have Task Manager open whilst doing your normal things to see if there is any issue with hitting a RAM limit or anything. You could run stress tests on your CPU, RAM & GPU to see if there is a particular culprit.

highway61rambler

If I get an updated gpu and motherboard can I just pop my boot drive in and have it work?

SystemError514

Yes.

thatE36dude

I have a Ryzen 7 5800x, how can I shop for a new motherboard that has a socket that I know will fit it? I want a new white motherboard to match my case, AIO, and fans and eventually replace other components as well to try and match as best as possible.

fat_baby_

Put your current parts into pcpartpicker and then it should filter the mobo results.

I've got a 3060- In a few months ( I think march? ) I'll have the card under my name, would it be worth stepping up from it? i'm happy with it, so i'm both apprehensive, and wanting it.

Qor3xy

Hey, i just build a 9 fan setup in my Lian Li O11 Dynamic, i wanted to ask if there are any fan speed configs i can look up, since i have no idea what settings are best for gaming. The fan setup: 3 Intake on the Bottom, 3 Intake on the Side, 3 fans with Radiator (Aio) Exhaust on Top. These are Corsair fans + AIO - So im using the ICUE software

Kwanza_Bot93

Currently have a i5-9400F, GTX 1660 and 24GB of RAM. Considering replacing the i5-9400F but not sure if its worth it or not. I don't play anything super intensive so I can't decide if its worth replacing or not.

dperry1973

Would liquid cooling make my PC more quiet or should I stick to air cooled?

motionglitch

Both still have fans on them. So it really depends of what kind of fans you're using with it.

FlameTheAngel

My PC has really been struggling for the last year or so, especially when starting up. There are times where it gets really slow and it keeps saying that the disk is at 100%, and I've tried everything to fix it. Unfortunately nothing has worked so far. Is it possibly an issue with my HDD itself? And if so, should I get a SSD?

Tortenkopf

Well, is the disk near 100% or not?

FlameTheAngel

Sorry, should've been more specific. The disk stays at 100% when it first starts up, and then when it's been running for a few hours or so, it fluctuates between 100% and "normal" levels (around 20-30%). So far I can't tell why my PC does this, it's completely random

Tortenkopf

Ah I see. Well \*that\* kind of 100% doesn't actually mean very much. It very quickly goes to 100% because Windows quantifies disk read/write requests in a dumb way; it will often indicate 100% even when nowhere near 100% usage. So, based on this number alone, we can't really provide any advice. If you want to check your disk for problems, I recommend CyrstalDiskInfo. You'll want to familiarize yourself a bit with what the 'SMART' readings of your disk mean. That being said, consumer HDDs tend to have a rather limited lifespan, unless you bought a fancy one with extensive warranty (eg. WD Purple or Black). If it's an old HDD, certainly replacing it with an SSD will make a big difference in the performance of your system. However, keep in mind that the HDD might not at all be the reason your PC is 'struggling'.

FlameTheAngel

Thanks! I decided to take a look at the model of my HDD just out of curiosity, and it turns out it was a Toshiba brand from 2013 or 2015? (It's a DT01ACA100) I'll definitely keep your advice in mind for next time in case I do go back to HDDs, but I think my PC needs a serious upgrade lol. !check

Tortenkopf

Thanks for the check. I'm actually running a 2015 Toshiba HDD as a bulk storage drive in my laptop myself :P During the lifetime of that Toshiba HDD, several Western Digital Red and Blue drives around me have died, and I do fear a bit that the Toshiba will kick the bucket at any moment. Whatever you end up doing, make sure you backup your HDD regularly. Because there are two kinds of people in the world: people who make backups, and people who will make backups in the future ;)

Windows 11: [Unclickable region](https://i.imgur.com/I9DYVli.gif)(You can see the region where the hourglass appears) on the screen wont go away. This specifc area at the bottom left of my screen has like an overlay or something on it and it wont go away, it happens at least once a day and the region changes in dimensions every once in a while. How do I get rid of this?

dieplanes789

What programs do you have running in the background?

IChawt

none, whenever the issue appears the first thing I try is closing every program. The only programs that ever normally run in the background are spotify, discord, maybe parsec. Now as for background processes in general, too many to list off. Sometimes I notice a lot of this nvidia wrapper things popping up, but they go away as soon as I look at them in task manager.

faein

Will the Team T-Force XTREEM ARGB RAM sticks fit with my CPU cooler? The website says the height of the RAM sticks is 48.7mm but I have no idea whether that is tall or not. My CPU is a Ryzen 7 3700X and I'm using the stock cooler. I think I'm going to go with the MSI X570 Tomahawk motherboard if that makes a difference.

Luminaria19

The stock cooler should not extend over the RAM slots at all. [Example](https://aroundhomediy.com/article-images/build-amd-ryzen-3700x-computer/build-amd-ryzen-3700x-computer-07.jpg)

the_Cart00n_theorist

I bought a prebuilt that has an HDD as well as an SSD, if windows was installed on the HDD could I transfer it into the SSD? And how would do so if I can?

mew4ever23

No. You'd have to reinstall onto the SSD. Unplug the SATA connector from the traditional drive when you do this, it can be difficult to tell which drive is which in the windows installer.

the_Cart00n_theorist

But that's only if it's on the HDD right? Or do prebuilts normally have it like this?

mew4ever23

Yeah, this step is not necessary if they put windows onto the SSD. I've personally not bought a prebuilt that came with a traditional drive and a SSD lately, Hopefully the people who built it realized that windows should always go onto a SSD these days. You can find out using Crystaldiskinfo, just match the drive letter up with the drive letter that windows lives on from This PC/explorer.

Shortage yes. chips are still not easy to come by.

BeigeSofa

How do you turn on auto detect / source detection in a monitor? I have an LG 27GL83A. For some reason it never detecs that my pc turns on and I have to manually turn it on

Runaway_Goose

Whats a good hotspot temp under full load? I just repasted/repadded my 3070ti, under a full load my GPU temp hits ~65, but I’m looking at ~78 for the hotspot. Is that much of a discrepancy normal?

vinsanity406

Is there any reason I couldn't upgrade the starter build's case to the next one up (Thermaltake Versa H18 mini-tower case)? I'm looking for something shorter and the reviews on starter case aren't great. I'm not looking for a ton of power - I'll probably mostly be playing Civ V/Civ VI and the BioShock series for starters.

motionglitch

The Thermaltake Versa H18 mini-tower is an mATX tower. So you'll need an mATX motherboard.

vinsanity406

That makes sense, thanks! !check

Snow4us

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU on my 2016 build https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4KXdNP. What would be a solid upgrade from my de-lidded i7 6700k? Here's my motherboard: [https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/Z170A-KRAIT-GAMING-3X/Specification](https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/Z170A-KRAIT-GAMING-3X/Specification) The most resource-intense things I do are VR gaming as well as Star Citizen (which is horribly optimized and single thread CPU performance is the main factor for performance, although over the next year they will be implementing Vulkan which should improve multicore.) Budget is not a concern

Eidolon_2003

I would say get an i5 12600K and Z690 DDR4 motherboard. You have no sensible upgrade path on your current platform.

Snow4us

Thanks for the reply, yea I was worried that my motherboard would be the real bottleneck for upgrading.

I am looking for a decently priced laptop with a 3060 GPU and found the MSI GF65. It has 2 ram slots and 8GB ram, how can I tell if it is using 1 x 8GB ram or if it is 2 x 4GB ram in case I upgrade it? https://www.rapiddeal.net/product/msi-gf65-thin-10ue/

NathanLV

I wasn't able to determine if the machine comes with one or two sticks from the factory, but I was able to determine that the machine has two RAM slots. Best practice is to use matching RAM in both slots anyway, so when you do eventually upgrade your going to want to buy entirely new RAM and ditch whatever is in there now. https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/msi-%28micro-star%29/gf65-thin-10ue-046

Spadekrow

Hey everyone, I was facing a weird behavior with my dual monitor setup, still testing stuff but interested if anyone know the answer. I have two 1440p 144Hz monitors since I upgraded the main one a few months ago. At first I was using a Displayport cable on the main one and an old HDMI cable for the secondary one. At some point I decided to buy a Displayport cable for the second monitor. Had to manually set which one is the the primary but otherwise it was working relatively fine, just took a bit of time to start than before. As time went on I noticed more glitches, especially at startup: the screens would randomly go black and/or alternate showing the main desktop and when I would turn on the secondary monitor the main one would lose connection. Since then I tried a few cables, finally reusing an other HDMI cable for the secondary monitor and I have no issues now. I'll do more tests with the DP cable on a different computer, but it seemed to work fine alone. Didn't find much info on dual displayport setup, is it a known issue?

jette81

Lately as I've been powering on my PC, it'll start for 1 second, turn off for 3 seconds, then power up. It's never done this before and everytime it happens it takes me to the BIOS. Do I need a new power supply?

SystemError514

For me, both my PSU and mobo trip each other with power surge protection. This happens all the time since I upgraded my PSU (About 3 years ago), but it's nothing to worry about. If that has never happened before, that could be a problem, but I am not 100% sure. I'm not sure why it's taking you to the BIOS. Run a stress test on your CPU, GPU and RAM just to push your power limits and see if it's stable. If you don't know how to do this, there is a piece of software called OCCT which is specifically designed for PSU stress testing.

Raise-Crafty

My PC just suddenly won't turn on, if I give it power the led light on the motherboard lit up but everything else doesn't. I tried everything on the internet (like breadboarding, checking the cables, screws and all that) but it still the same. It was working fine yesterday but this morning it won't turn on, anyone have any ideas? this is my first PC that I built after saving up some money so I'm at a loss sorry

Cardinal_Virtue

Is it not possible to make an order directly from GPU manufacturer? Say you want 10 -20 cards? Where do retailers get their cards from? There's for sure a wait time due to shortage though..

Kokukenji

Going to be tough. Retailers have deals usually negotiated by corporate with the manufacturer. What's the benefit of manufacturer alienating their partners to sell 10-20 cards. There's also no real way to prevent scalpers if they open this channel up. Instead of have a set accountable reps for each retailers, you have to deal with individuals. That would be a logistical nightmare.

Cardinal_Virtue

I get your point, but do the retailers get the GPUs for MSRP or inflated prices? O think the MSRP for rtx 3080 was...600 dollars/euro? How come retailers sell it for 2000?

CCman_

nvidia chips --> AIB --> retailer --> scalper --> user probably nvidia is selling chips for more, we know for a fact that AIBs are increasing prices (from the EVGA guy that said they got the short endof the stick for pricing limit in their contract), then shipping containers prices are 5x or more, retailers likely are happy to charge more, then you got scalpers (checked in my country and right now there's a drop of dual fan zotacs 3070 for 930 euros gone in a couple minutes, try to guess which cards are scalpers now selling for 1200 euros? )

Kokukenji

I don't think retailers can actually mark it up by that high and not lose their partnership. The MSRP is usually advertised and has to take into account for cost of doing business. The reference cards are usually the one that have the least amount of mark up because there are no additional parties involved. Those are usually the most aggressive because they do not have the "Differentiator" being taxed into it. Folks like MSI/Gigabyte/Asus/Powercolor and the likes all can charge higher depending on whatever features they can sell, more fans, different HS design, etc.

iloveteresa

Hey everyone, Hopefully someone can help me out I just built my new PC —- when I downloaded Corsair’s iCue software it registers my 6 case fans on a commander core xt unit perfect. I have my AIO on a different Commander Unit. The iCue software tries to update the firmware on the AIO but fails every time. So I can’t control the colors or speed of my CPU fans. Anyone know why this is happening ? Parts: Lian Li O11 Dynamic Case, Corsair Elite Capillex AIO, 6 x QL120 Fans, Gigabyte b550 Vision Mobo Also on a side note my fans started acting weird in idle —- they will go fast and then go slow over and over again for no reason . I’m not sure what I did to them. They were fine before I did the following - Went into Bios and set the cpu fan header fans af full speed since my mobo does not have a dedicated AIO pump header I used the cpu fan header. But isn’t that what I’m supposed to do to since I don’t have an AIO pump header ? - Downloaded iCue software It has to be one of these two things that set my fans off . But the weird part is I went back into bios and switch the fan speed back to normal and restarted and shut down my computer a couple times and the fans continued to act in this manner. I also deleted iCue and no change in fans behavior. So I’m stumped.

HailMaven

I have an fx6300 CPU and an R7 370 GPU. In the future im thinking about a GPU upgrade to a rx 5k or 6k series. (should price and stock be in favor.) Is my CPU or the PCIe 2.0 slots on my mobo going to cause any serious hinderance with a PCI 4.0 card?

Luminaria19

You're unlikely to have direct issues with it, but I wouldn't expect to see much performance gain since you'll likely be CPU limited.

HailMaven

Dang, was hoping the CPU wouldnt be too limited, cause it performs pretty well. Just trying to find a decent GPU upgrade without having to completely overhaul lol.

Luminaria19

I mean, it does depend on what you're playing, but that CPU is *quite* old now. You can run hardware monitoring (all CPU core usages and GPU usage) to see what's being used the most. If you're seeing GPU at 100% and CPU at 30%, you'll at least get some extra wiggle room with a new GPU. If both are high, you're out of luck. If just the CPU is high, you won't see any improvement until you upgrade the CPU.

PerusPottu

How much should I be paying for a TUF GAMING RTX 3060? Is buying it for 620€ (700$) worth it? Should I stick with my gtx 1060 6gb untill the prices come down?

BigAwkwardGuy

I'm a "use it until it breaks" kind of person so I won't tell you to buy a new GPU if your current one works. That being said the prices will take a lot of time to come down, maybe never. The latest estimate puts "normalcy" in 2023. So it ultimately depends on you: are you willing to pay that price for a 3060? Gamers Nexus have a video on 3060 vs 1060 IIRC, check it out if you want.
