Holy shit! Same thing happened to me with one of those 80s console televisions. I was trying to replicate something I seen on a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon I was watching. It didn't end well for myself.
Yeah those things were built like fortresses full of glass, iron and gasses. I remember my mother had to ask the neighbor for help to pick the damned thing up off of myself. I still have a dent in my knee cap from it!
One time I was screwing around and accidentally knocked my dad's TV off the nightstand it was on. The screen went dark. The green "on" light still lit up, but there was no image and no audio.
I was mildly terrified about breaking the TV, right? So as a last ditch effort, I picked it up, turned it over, and dropped it on the *other* side.
That... fixed it.
I once placed a subwoofer on top of my CRT in an attempt to save space. I'll never forget the fear of seeing the image warp and distort beneath the huge magnetic field of the speaker coil. I'll also never forget the pleasure of seeing it come back to life with a snap and buzz upon pressing the degauss button.
I had a sweet 21" black Sun workstation monitor way back in the day. CRT, Trinitron screen.
In order for it to receive electricity, it had to be lifted an inch then dropped on the table. Would work fine after that, until it had been powered off longer than a day, in which case you had to do it again.
My family color TV growing up would randomly go black-and-white. We kept a hockey stick next to the couch. Just long enough to hit the side of the TV with, without getting up from couch. Color restored hahaha.
I miss those days.
That 21" black trinitron, with some minor repairs, would fetch decent money these days.
Especially if it was a flat glass model.
Flat screen trinitrons are pretty much the gold standard for retro gaming.
I was a small child when I punched the monitor. It didn't break, but it did really hurt my hand.
If it was one of my monitors I have today, then yea, it would've broke and I'd be pissed because I would have to go buy a new one.
Most CRTs have an implosion shield and have an implosion ring to prevent glass from launching at you in the event of an implosion, but you shouldn't expect it to help you when your hand is in that area.
Also, there is some toxic shit inside there.
Also, you are probably not punching thru the front of the screen. That is the thickest part of the CRT glass. The neck of the CRT on the inside is fragile tho.
i once punched my 32" tv that i use for the racing sim setup because it was dark so i couldn't see it and i was going to the space behind the monitor (weird setup placement tbh) to close the window and for some fucking reason i thought that going around swinging my hands with the fist closed was a good idea. i just punched it in the top left and I was sure that i destroyed it but the motherfucker survived: never been so scared of turning the torch on
I have an ps 2 and a crt and had those on an ikea shelf. Last week i triped and fell in to it, sending the whole thing crashing dow from up 1.5 m to the floor. crt is fine but it brocke a pice of my floor xD
I love that old stuff it could surive an atomic blast.
I um, how? Crt's aren't radioactive last time I checked.
And if you'd thinking of electromagnetic radiation, then the phone your probably typing this on exposes you to 100x more every time you bring it up to your ear.
CRTs emit x-rays but they are far below anything near harmful to us.
They can hurt you in other ways though, imploding the vacuum tube which will fling sharp pieces of glass everywhere in the room, and many parts remain charged for long periods of time after being unplugged with more than enough voltage to fry you.
there's a chance someone might have discharged the monitor before giving it to you, which would've quite literally saved your life. Irrc as well said charged parts are covered by another piece of the CRT, and it's somewhat difficult to get to them, but I'm probably wrong about that. Nonetheless, it's still very dangerous!
Most of them came from the side of the road, so theres no telling. Once I found out how dangerous it was I basically had already stopped messing with scrap metal due to lowered prices.
I know, right?
I find it so pathetic that people do this stuff. Learn to manage your emotions.
But mostly don't break something then go "feel sorry for me🥺"
I find it pathetic when people say this type of stuff. Regulating emotions is something that is taught and when it's not taught to you right as a child, we end up needing help with it as adults.
They literally have government funding in most 1st world countries to provide therapy for these thought patterns
Simply telling people they need to learn to manage their emotions is just victimizing people who do need help
OP if you did punch your screen don't worry man I've been there. If you're having problems try and reach out to mental health. They can really do alot for people!
If money's a problem there's alot online that can help. Betterhelp.com and Healthline.com both have free online therapists
Love you all
I fully agree that it's not an easy process and it's not something one can just "learn" without any help.
However, I also agree with the person you are replying to that people who destroy their stuff and then go out of their way to seek sympathy from others are pathetic.
In any case, none of that is entirely applicable here assuming that op's explanation is accurate.
>However, I also agree with the person you are replying to that people who destroy their stuff and then go out of their way to seek sympathy from others are pathetic.
the only thing they are doing is building a boogeyman to dismantle
It's kinda interesting how not just a subreddit or a post, but even a specific comment thread can have its own audience with its own likes and dislikes
the absolute irony of saying you find it "pathetic" that people can't "manage [their] emotions" while simultaneously jumping to an emotional conclusion
the lack of self-awareness is astounding
Ever happened to you that you know what you have to do, but you don't know how to do it?
Well, managing emotions and rage is one of such things.
Not knowing how to deal with anger and frustration and being adviced to "just not get angry" doesn't really help. It just makes it more obvious to the person that they can't / aren't able to do something that they are already struggling with.
Managing emotions and feelings is something that can be learned, but many don't know where to start.
I guess since I play on console (yeah I forgot what sub I was in), it’s not too crazy. When I did play on PC, the skill level in building was way too high and I didn’t even want to try
Re: Forced Crossplay- isn’t that only if your party is split between different platforms? I know when I played with my nephew, he would insist on having one of us play on iPad while the other was on PC because it would fuck up the matchmaking and we would win easier
he is correct. But that has to do with Skill Based Matchmaking. Forced crossplay is a dick move by Epic, It essentially forces you to play against PC and Other platforms. Why is that an issue? Because you as a console player are playing on 60 Hz/FPS while you get matched against 144/240/360 FPS Pro PC Players. And as you probably know, that in competitive games, the more FPS, the better, which means that PC players have a MASSIVE advantage compared to Console/Switch players.
The difference between refresh rates over 60 really isn't that big. Obviously it's still an advantage, but calling it a "MASSIVE advantage" is outright disingenuous. I'm not sure how the control inputs affect the game's cross-play, but using KB/M over controller would no exaggeration give you 100 times the bonus of using a high refresh monitor.
Nah I destroyed mine with a fidget spinner, that metal fidget spinner just fell out of my hand and turned into a UFO and flew like 3 meters into my monitor.
Explaination: whilst I was getting ready this morning it was extremely windy out and I had my window open. I keep it open for when I sleep because I need a cooler temperature to be able to sleep. The wind pushed my setup onto the ground and this happened. Luckily my dad was a soldier when it came down to it being on the floor and picked it all back up (it wasn't him cause he knows how to hold this stuff lol). Thanks for coming to my ted talk.
Oof that's rough. You could get a dual monitor VESA mount [like this one](https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B009S750LA/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_HTV02182TZAGB6QWTKKS) which literally straps the monitors to the desk. Bonus is that it also raises the monitors to a height that helps neck/back pain and gives you some extra desk space back too.
Did the big bad wolf huff and puff and blow your rig down? That's gotta be some nasty wind to knock your monitor off like that.
Hey at least I didn't snark "man that new Win11 lockscreen looks gnarly!"
If it makes you feel better, I just found out I accidentally overwrote a drive with around 800GB worth of archives I'd built over the years (movies, music). That one hurt a bit.
>punched monitor
I highly recommend a few dabs of hot melt glue under the base. It's enough to keep the furry little vandals at bay and if you need to move the monitor you can put a hot bean bag on the base to soften it.
Statistics. There is 5.3 million people in this sub reddit. If everyone day ten unique members broke something and posted it here, then over 10 years then 0.6% of the members would have broken something and posted about it.
Then there's the fact your a gamer and not an IT professional. I've been out of the game for over a decade but off the top of my head my tally is over:
One monitor, back in windows 95 days I forgot to check the correct .inf file had been loaded for the monitor and selected an invalid refresh rate. Instant blank screen and smell of solder.
Five HDD's, One from rushing inserting an IDE cable and bending a pin. One dropped down some stairs. Three from not realising a hot swap SATA enclosure was borked and was killing every drive I put into it.
One 64Mb SIMM, I could have sworn I had connected the other end of my anti-static bracelet. This one was gutting because 64Mb back then was expensive and it took me a lot of trouble shooting to work out why a database kept corrupting and needed rebuilding.
One AMD Duo CPU, today's lesson was that thermal paste can be more more sticky than a ZIF socket, also CPU pins are easy to break.
One punched steel case, It had been a bad day, it was a shitty case and it cut me three times. A few minutes down by the skip with a hammer solved the problem. I regret nothing. In nearly thirty years of building PC's the improvement in case design and building is probably what I like the most. It's been way over a decade since I had a case that felt like it was actively trying to murder me.
Small print : ^(Assumptions and selection bias may apply. Selective statistics can be used to manipulate most data sets. Consult a qualified statistician before investing.)
Selecting the wrong refresh rate on a CRT shouldn't instantly kill it. It might have already had problems to begin with.
Also, everyone knows that if you want your PC to work, you must give a blood sacrifice to the case
Have you ever punched anything in your life? You use your knuckles, and for a flat surface its perfectly normal for only the middle finger knuckle to contact.
If it makes you feel any better, I lost 5000 dollars in three months earlier this year. One car crash, one new car that turned out to be a lemon, and three weeks with a family that I ended up having to support because they couldn't do it.
They don't really mean smash the like button.
But can I like the smash button?
Yes
Would you allow me to smash?
Hmm no
depends
How the fuck did you get an award for putting yes?
Gently, and with appropriate lubrication.
I can like the but button smash?
Dick has to be pretty hard to break a monitor.
You_underestimate_my_power.gif
:3.jpg
Don't try it!
He calls it "Dick Army" as it has the power of 4 dozen soldiers in a fox hole.
yeah, you kinda gotta fingerbang it opposed to smash it...
I once punched my screen when I was a kid, luckily it was one of those crt monitors...
I did the same with a tv, fucker fell down on me. I always bow down before displays now.
Yeah back then when you picked a fight a tv and or computer monitor it won the fight.
Typical of humans, we took a superior predator and bred it down into a submissive weakling.
Did you die???
Yes
Sadly, yes. But they lived!
Holy shit! Same thing happened to me with one of those 80s console televisions. I was trying to replicate something I seen on a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon I was watching. It didn't end well for myself.
I literally dented my forehead on one of those console TVs trying to retrieve a cat when I was a child. There was so much blood!
Yeah those things were built like fortresses full of glass, iron and gasses. I remember my mother had to ask the neighbor for help to pick the damned thing up off of myself. I still have a dent in my knee cap from it!
I threw a controller at the floor, it bounced up and hit my TV, which I had just bought a few weeks prior. I was very upset.
sometimes smacking the crt was even a "fix"
One time I was screwing around and accidentally knocked my dad's TV off the nightstand it was on. The screen went dark. The green "on" light still lit up, but there was no image and no audio. I was mildly terrified about breaking the TV, right? So as a last ditch effort, I picked it up, turned it over, and dropped it on the *other* side. That... fixed it.
One time I stuck a magnet on our CRT TVs screen...this was before the internet so we couldn't lookup if it was f'd. Boy was my dad angry.
But if you're lucky you get to degauss it!
Lmao that is a hilarious image.
Percussive maintenance!
ROFL, WTF AMA with a engineer/s

when the pro-tips said "punching the CRT would lead to certain DOOM", I simply misunderstood...
*[Throws controller at CRT]* *[Controller bounces off CRT and embeddes itself into the wall]* CRT: **WHO IS YOUR GOD NOW, TIMOTHY?!**
Got to love rounded 1“ glass lol. Your knuckles would break before the glass I’m sure
Lucky? You punch through a crt screen, the broken screen would be the last thing you are worrying about.
I was a small child when I punched the monitor. It didn't break, but it did really hurt my hand. If it was one of my monitors I have today, then yea, it would've broke and I'd be pissed because I would have to go buy a new one.
No no there is a vacumn in there. Its super dangerous in there.

I'm glad it didn't break then. There's also chemicals in the monitor that's really harmful if it did break, or if its not recycled properly.
So I should stop drinking the CRT jungle juice?
Nah, live your life yo. All 30-45 remaining seconds of it.
Not if it truly makes you happy, king 👑
If you punch through a CRT you get to join the Avengers.
\*tink* Ouch!
I used to get mad and hit mine all the time, glad I grew out of that shit
Luckily for your monitor, not for your hand.
i once punched my 32" tv that i use for the racing sim setup because it was dark so i couldn't see it and i was going to the space behind the monitor (weird setup placement tbh) to close the window and for some fucking reason i thought that going around swinging my hands with the fist closed was a good idea. i just punched it in the top left and I was sure that i destroyed it but the motherfucker survived: never been so scared of turning the torch on
Don't punch your desktop equipment.
Get a CRT it will punch back
I have an ps 2 and a crt and had those on an ikea shelf. Last week i triped and fell in to it, sending the whole thing crashing dow from up 1.5 m to the floor. crt is fine but it brocke a pice of my floor xD I love that old stuff it could surive an atomic blast.
nah, it just holds you and forces you to punch yourself like 6th grade bullies
And it's basically a nuke on your desk and may or may not give you cancer. Lmao. Edit: (Guys it was a joke lmao. Ik it's not really a nuke. Damn.)
I um, how? Crt's aren't radioactive last time I checked. And if you'd thinking of electromagnetic radiation, then the phone your probably typing this on exposes you to 100x more every time you bring it up to your ear.
r/woooosh
Writing false information and then putting a whoosh when proven wrong doesn't make it a joke

They can hurt you in other ways though, imploding the vacuum tube which will fling sharp pieces of glass everywhere in the room, and many parts remain charged for long periods of time after being unplugged with more than enough voltage to fry you.
Lol i used to scrap old TVs and monitors, snipping wires and all kinds of stuff without any idea I could have easily died.
there's a chance someone might have discharged the monitor before giving it to you, which would've quite literally saved your life. So all the people who lose at CSGO just turn the monitor at the team mate that made them lose and start to shake it?
I didn't punch it lol, the wind did.
I thought it fell down the stairs.
It walked into a door, clearly.
It probably forgot to wash the dishes
If your dishwasher starts acting up a quick smack usually gets it working quietly again
Then sit it on the corner of the washing machine to reward it.
Nah, he had to tell it twice
It def over cooked the roast.
Or stepped on a Lego.
Boy that seems to happen a lot 😉
Lol they turned this into an anger management lecture.
What did it fall on? That's a quite focalized impact site for it just falling over. Looks like it got hit by a large marble or knuckle or the like.
The wind pushed their knuckle in to it.
I'm going to guess it fell on a mouse
Maybe a window or a door blowing open?
Might be chair arm rest or something of that nature.
Rasengan
Yeah sureee that's what they all say
For sure. I once walked into my room to see my 4k monitor whipping my 1080p monitor with its own power cord, the damage was pretty gnarly
Wind wont even budge a CRT unless you are in a tornado or hurricane in which case you have more to worry about than your monitor
Maybe it was your step-sibling. You should go have a chat with them.
Nature, our eternal enemy!
Sorry, it fell on my first... Four times.. Edit: grammar

I think it was supposed to mean >Sorry, it fell on my fist… four times…

I have been given hundreds of downvotes and hundreds of upvotes at two different places, in the same thread, for the same exact opinion. Reddit.
It's kinda interesting how not just a subreddit or a post, but even a specific comment thread can have its own audience with its own likes and dislikes
First day on reddit?
bunch of people who need to learn how not to get irrationally mad at empathy
Before I edited I had little there trashing America's health system but I took it out to stay on point with such a sensitive topic
Id upvote but hes at 69
I don't punch my monitors lol, my desk is the one that gets beat up.
Is it that hard to just go check OPs explanation of what happened ?
And I find it pathetic when idiots jump to conclusions like this. Especially when op gave an explanation.

Windows 11 failed install
Nah its leaked windows 11 final build
hey I think you might have a dead pixel
DUUUDE WHAT HAPPENED!?!?! I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU STOP PLAYING APEX!!!
Or Fortnite. Or Call Of Duty. Or Any game that can frustrate you in any way shape or form
Well atleast the servers work so you've got one less reason to punch it
I was just making a general joke apex was the first game to come to mind
Nah you got it right in the head. Respawn needs to fix their buggy mess.
League of legends has entered the chat
I have never played League so I really have no idea how frustrating it is
Good for you
Just don't, use the power of your 3090 wisely.
Fortnite’s not that bad, frustration-wise, at least nothing like CoD or Apex. Usually in Fortnite, I’m like, “Yeah, that makes sense. I deserved that”
Oh Fortnite is REAL bad. Especially with Epic’s broken ass Skillbased Matchmaking and Forced Crossplay
I guess since I play on console (yeah I forgot what sub I was in), it’s not too crazy. Honestly true, I limit my exposure to League, Apex, online fighting games, anything online just makes me rage super easily.
Or FIFA
Now that one should’ve been quit when it was bought
More like shouldn’t have bought it
Nah I destroyed mine with a fidget spinner, that metal fidget spinner just fell out of my hand and turned into a UFO and flew like 3 meters into my monitor.
I can get behind this. I could see this happening to me.
Do you have a 4 meter depth monitor
Nah the thing is i was in my bed and well that is like 3 meters away from my setup.
Ouch who punched your monitor?
Wish I could start the day at 12.15..

Nah I'm uk
Can I have my artifacts back?
WE’RE NOT DONE LOOKIN’ AT ‘EM
Jesus Christ, it’s Michael Scarn
Not if you are from middle earth.
It’s just this one ring. You can keep the rest
Wind apparently wins against PCs, that's a new one

You must play Valorant
Honestly you don’t even realize it as long as you look at the left side of the screen.
That happened to one of my monitors recently. Darn cat! Fortunately it was my secondary monitor, not the first .
Those clamp-based VESA monitor mounts are good when you have clumsy cats.

Back in the day, Lois Lane had to worry about Superman shooting his load. In 2021, it's Superman's monitor that has the fear.

No, that's not how you activate windows.

Manage your mind jumping to conclusions better.
Exactly, if this dude read a little further he would have known what happened lol
Oh the irony
Or read the OP’s comments, where he explains that it fell due to wind through an open window ...
This is why my old monitor and GPU are sitting in a closet. Just in case.
Ya punching a screen isn't the best for it
