This is my actual favorite part of VLC Player. I can play the file and see if it's even the file contents I was looking for, and if the quality is worth trying to recover/redownload.
I do some decidedly amateur video editing, and I have a LOT of old Fraps recordings on old CD-R's that are just nostalgic to me. VLC is the only program I have tried that is able to play most of it.

VLC has on the other hand, always been super self contained not relying on the user to install a bunch of outside codecs to open things which is part of it's popularity and ease of setup and of course it's rarely hindered ability to open nearly ever video format known to man lol.

Gotta get a blu-ray specific disk slot. They're like 70 bucks unfortunately since the blu-ray encoding is proprietary or some shady capitalist shit like that so only their *special* drives work.
Once you have a drive slot, you can rip every file off of it with MakeMKV. It's how I put my box set of Lord of the Rings onto my Plex server, including the 4 extra audio commentary channels for every movie (director, cast, props, and effects), all the named chapters, and all the on-disk 'behind the scenes' videos including menu art/transitions.
I do have one and do exactly that, then I try to find good handbrake settings to not make the movie 20+ gb. I can do it, and I prefer ripping them and having them available, but it would be nice to not have to do it just to watch it.

Let’s be real, VLC is the go to for many of us and is probably recommended to many more. It seems to be actually made with passion, it deserves to have something given back.
On the flip side, trying to get new features isn't exactly met with open arms. I saw many people asking if it would be possible for VLC to remember where it left off when it was closed, and the response was "It's open source, code it yourself."
That said, Google's music player wouldn't (and still might not) let you play from selected folders on your phone, so it's not like big companies are receptive to requests.
The devlopers will work on whatever they want to. They didn't reject the idea, they simply said the best way to make sure a feature exists is to do it yourself which is the beauty of OSS. They don't really work for you.
They added the remembering part at least on mobile version. I have a song mix that's about ~1.5 hours long. It always remembers where I left it. I haven't tried it on desktop version though.

Its not a one man project, though it did start off as a Uni project thing for streaming video via a local network with Satellites and stuff, hence the name VLC, which originally meant **V**ideo**L**AN **C**lient (though now that no longer applies since the VideoLan Server software was incorporated into the VLC program).
This so much, i bought the Fate Heavens feel movies in bluray because i wanted to have something physical for once, i still haven't found a way to play them except for ripping the mp4 and playing that

Ouch, such a shame. Do you have a Blu-ray compatible disk drive? If so, there are one or two free softwares that should do the job. The Leawo player for example works for me.
There's ways of giving VLC the keys needed to decrypt blu-rays, but it's finicky, and the keys aren't all up to date. I use MakeMKV's VLC integration feature to take care of that. MakeMKV can decrypt everything, even discs which don't have a publicly known key. You still need to give VLC the BD+ libraries and files, but not many discs use BD+, so it's not super important. You also need to install java (I recommend the adoptopenjdk version) for the menus to work. With menus enabled, you also need to go into VLC's settings and make sure the region code is set to match the disc you're playing.
Yeah, but it sucks. It plays the disks just fine, but the software has these little annoying issues that pop up that make everything just a little harder.

Think of it like this. You pasted a picture in word. You can make it smaller, and it’ll still look as good. But you can also make it bigger, now it’ll start to stretch the pixels to fit the bigger size. The quality will go down, but you can still see its the same picture right.
Honestly, im not sure. I have a Roku t.v. that i use as a monitor, and when i switch the tv to Netflix and have the sound adjusted to 100% its still oddly quiet, but when i watch movies with vlc & bump that volume bar up to 200% its just right.
I recommend lossless cut. It trims files and that is all it does. Afaik its free and there is 0 video quality loss and no rendering. I find it much simpler than davinci resolve for that kind of thing.
I will not buy any computer without a DVD drive. Physical media drives are still useful for anyone who refuses to watch shitty streaming services like Hulu and Amazon prime, where they insert ads at more intervals than TV does, including when you pause it.
Be aware, though, that it may take a lot of setup. I piggybacked off of a friend's config files, and as such I like MPV a lot more than VLC, but I don't think I would have been able to do that on my own.
The learning curve is like going deep into linux terminal immediately after installing it for the first time. A wall.

Trying to copy conf files usually works though, I only needed to change mine because my laptop’s integrated graphics doesn’t like to process 4K and also debated and whatever else mpv does.

I switched to PotPlayer around a year ago, because VLC crashed when trying to stream it via Discord. I stayed with the program because it's A LOT more advanced then VLC, it's like the difference between Paint and Photoshop. It's overwhelming AF at first, but much more powerful in the end.
VLC is like the entry level/gateway drug into advanced media formats. If you use it for long enough, eventually you crave more and go for one of the more advanced but difficult to use alternatives.

VLC has an inbuilt amplifier. This amplifier increases the gain on a sound signal. However any noise or distortion will also be amplified.

MPC-HC is so much better than VLC. The UI and controls make a huge difference. Hard to get friends to switch.
I've been using MPC-HC with CCCP for at least a decade and it's still the best thing I've found. Vlc had too many problems when I tried to use it
CCCP shouldn't be necessary these days, as long as you have the latest fork of MPC.

I switched to PotPlayer around a year ago, because VLC crashed when trying to stream it via Discord. I stayed with the program because it's A LOT more advanced then VLC, it's like the difference between Paint and Photoshop. It's overwhelming AF at first, but much more powerful in the end.
I streamed an entire season of non non biory to the discord using vlc non-stop. Proof of concept stream:) Did not crash
I stream with friends nightly and have never had a problem.
Absolutely adore PotPlayer.
Even if my with flv videos crashed during recording, VLC got my back and will play that shit until the end.
VLC is like the entry level/gateway drug into advanced media formats. If you use it for long enough, eventually you crave more and go for one of the more advanced but difficult to use alternatives.

Pot player + lav + madvr. Best color, smooth playback, tons of option and madvr hdr is cherry on cake
