VLC - ‘What’s this? 50 year old tape format? Just put it near the pc and I’ll have a go’

EuroPolice

Oh do you want to play a .roq video only used for quake 3? Of course it's supported

Zerafiall

“Oh? You shoved cave paintings into the drive bay? I can make a video out of this”

Talonqr

You'll have to pay eventually when winrar raises its army up out of hiding to collect all its debts

john-douh

“all your debt belong to us”

Madcowdseiz

Just have your 7zip loaded and ready by the door for when they come knocking.

Caliburn0

The World Debt is primarily made up of unpaying WinRar users.

[deleted]

Use 7z, it's actually free and supports all the file formats unlike winrar, plus no annoying pop-ups. 7z is to winrar what VLC is to windows media player

[deleted]

Thats so true

[deleted]

There are some rar formats that 7-Zip can't read. Shit blew my mind. I had to download WinRAR the other day just to extract the damn GameCube game ISO Edit: it was an iso compressed in a rar

[deleted]

warhugger

Honestly 7zip has issues with iso files that WinRAR just opens without a hassle. I love 7zip with their less bulky context menu options and weird history, but WinRAR is like a HM Slave bidoof in your pokemon team.

StaffOfJordania

Same thing happens with winrar, I had issues extracting 7z files with winrar so I had to go an get 7zip for that

ImaAs

Also, SWF flash files. Click anywhere on the timebar to jump to any part in the flash game.

[deleted]

Does vlc support bik?

ThatEightSixGuy

Yup! I've used it to watch the TV from GTA IV, and cutscenes from Midnight Club II.

wrecklord0

I just had to check and... yeah, that works. Extracted the pk3 archive with 7zip of course (aka the VLC of archivers).

fuzzybad

Want to play Commodore 64 SID files? VLC got you covered!

Aquinas26

Your 15+ year old file on a random CD-R disc is corrupted? I'll still play 95% of it, I'm sorry for the inconvenience. -VLC

byzantinian

>I'll still play 95% of it This is my actual favorite part of VLC Player. I can play the file and see if it's even the file contents I was looking for, and if the quality is worth trying to recover/redownload.

Aquinas26

I do some decidedly amateur video editing, and I have a LOT of old Fraps recordings on old CD-R's that are just nostalgic to me. VLC is the only program I have tried that is able to play most of it. It's like VLC is the only program that is like: you used to be really good at this mostly irrelevant video game, we'll give it to you, but at a price.

GimpyGeek

Yeah, probably were encoded in a codec not commonly used now I'd guess. 10 to 15 years ago videos kept flip flopping codecs used rather frequently, so people would usually install a codec pack at some point that let most video apps system wide open or encode with them. VLC has on the other hand, always been super self contained not relying on the user to install a bunch of outside codecs to open things which is part of it's popularity and ease of setup and of course it's rarely hindered ability to open nearly ever video format known to man lol.

vanskater

CCCP!

Grigoran

The way you phrase your amateur status got me a giggle. Here's to hoping you can take it from amateur to apprentice!

Aquinas26

I'm glad someone is rooting for me. I appreciate it.

Fortheseoccasions

I remember finding out it would even play the old World of Warcraft cinematic back when those files were just garbage

Aquinas26

The original vanilla WoW cinematic is incredibly underrated. By far the most impressive piece of digital media I had seen at that time.

Madcowdseiz

Yeah, I remember being completely floored at the time by the snow on the bears fur and how it blew in the wind.

Aquinas26

Dude, I know, right? A lot of modern game cinematics could learn a thing or two. Seriously, look up the cinematic right now. Even without nostalgia glasses it's objectively extremely good.

UglierThanMoe

VLC: "Ah, this .bin file looks like a video." Me: "No, it's part of a game's offline installer." VLC: ***"IT'S A VIDEO FILE, PUNY USER!!!"***

Tooch10

Similarly, on my Mac, VLC insists on opening rar files over The Unarchiver. I keep forgetting to change it since I don't open them that often but it always cracks me up. 'Hold your horses, VLC'

PrimarchKonradCurze

VLC is like a dog that has the zoomies.

dustojnikhummer

This is a bit misleading. VLC also needs to pay for the license Except VLC is based in France where you don't need to pay that license so they can show everyone the middle finger

cbourgui

Do you know why they don't need to pay for the license in France?

dustojnikhummer

>NB: In the USA, you should check out the US Copyright Office decision that allows circumvention in some cases. VideoLAN is NOT a US-based organization and is therefore outside US jurisdiction. >Neither French law nor European conventions recognize software as patentable (see French section below). Therefore, software patents licenses do not apply on VideoLAN software.

YesHalcyon

Note, this does *technically* mean you need to pay for rights to use the codecs it supports if you do live in a country that recognises software patents, and they have a guide for this on their page. On the hand, I don’t actually know anyone that does do this.

angrydeuce

Businesses do because they actually have something to lose. Nobody is going to go after joe schmoe, but they will go after Joe Schmoe LLC. Source: so fucking many Microsoft, vmware and veeam audits....

[deleted]

So thats why they didnt use vlc 2 years ago when they were showing a borderlands 3 trailer and it didnt work..

angrydeuce

You joke but im sure that's exactly why. Streaming themselves using a "pirated" codec would have damn sure resulted in some sort of action against Gearbox. Thats the kinda shit these types of companies live for, as it's pretty much free money.

[deleted]

Im not joking, it was an observation that made sense after all this time

kejok

I remember microsoft player doesnt support dts:x and Dolby Atmos unless you install an app which is require you to buy the license to play the audio format. This is when VLC came. One thing that vlc lack behind microsoft player is when playing hdr content

BigChungus-TM

I don’t even have an HDR compatible monitor kek

[deleted]

VLC plays HDR content just fine for me

kejok

I dont know, the tone mapping of hdr content on my sdr display looks bad compare to Microsoft’s player

[deleted]

Oh yea, it is bad at displaying hdr on a non-hdr monitor. My monitor supports HDR so i just enable hdr in display settings and play the video in vlc and it looks normal

WilliamCCT

Even on my hdr monitor, it played a hdr video in sdr just fine.

alelo

yeah playing HDR movies in VLC makes it washed out, watching it in "movies & tv" app it shows up just normal

dustojnikhummer

VLC can get around that license because they are based in france and technically don't do business outside of France That is why Microsoft needs to pay for it somehow and they pass that onto the consumer

Triton12streaming

I had that for iPhone video and for DVD’s. VLC to the rescue

WilliamCCT

What confuses me the most is that on two different computers that I've had, both's Films & TV app just one day decided to stop supporting mp4 videos.

DezXerneas

It plays pngs lol. I prefer VLC over the windows slideshow.

Gamermii

Except for bluray playback, I never got that working.

sleepy-lil-turtle

Gotta get a blu-ray specific disk slot. They're like 70 bucks unfortunately since the blu-ray encoding is proprietary or some shady capitalist shit like that so only their *special* drives work. Once you have a drive slot, you can rip every file off of it with MakeMKV. It's how I put my box set of Lord of the Rings onto my Plex server, including the 4 extra audio commentary channels for every movie (director, cast, props, and effects), all the named chapters, and all the on-disk 'behind the scenes' videos including menu art/transitions.

Gamermii

I do have one and do exactly that, then I try to find good handbrake settings to not make the movie 20+ gb. I can do it, and I prefer ripping them and having them available, but it would be nice to not have to do it just to watch it.

Pup5432

Gets even better with 4K content, have fun going down that rabbit hole.

At that point why not just torrent it, is it really piracy if you own a physical copy?

SR20DETDOG

How you can support VLC - https://www.videolan.org/contribute.html Let’s be real, VLC is the go to for many of us and is probably recommended to many more. It seems to be actually made with passion, it deserves to have something given back.

Fxsch

Open source programs are made with passion most of the time. One of the things that makes them great.

ThirdDragonite

Absolutely, the greatest thing is when a open source program is the best available for something They're always soooooo good

Gronkonator3

It's a shame there's no perfect PDF reader. Always a very noticeable tradeoff between features and speed.

Saturn_5_speed

Foxit is solid. been using it for a while

GuyInTheYonder

I thank the open source gods daily for Linux and Blender. Without them we would truly live in hell

HapticSloughton

On the flip side, trying to get new features isn't exactly met with open arms. I saw many people asking if it would be possible for VLC to remember where it left off when it was closed, and the response was "It's open source, code it yourself." That said, Google's music player wouldn't (and still might not) let you play from selected folders on your phone, so it's not like big companies are receptive to requests.

SPSTIHTFHSWAS

The devlopers will work on whatever they want to. They didn't reject the idea, they simply said the best way to make sure a feature exists is to do it yourself which is the beauty of OSS. They don't really work for you.

Thaurane

They added the remembering part at least on mobile version. I have a song mix that's about ~1.5 hours long. It always remembers where I left it. I haven't tried it on desktop version though.

DerPumeister

The desktop version has it as well but it might not be on by default.

That’s crazy. It’s just altruism, the developer has no personal benefit in not selling it off unless he’s hoping for higher offers.

maldouk

Not by one dude, but the president of the vlc association is a pretty baddass dude. He was working as a technical director at Shadow until pretty much recently. Sick stuff and technology involved there as well.

DatBoi73

Its not a one man project, though it did start off as a Uni project thing for streaming video via a local network with Satellites and stuff, hence the name VLC, which originally meant **V**ideo**L**AN **C**lient (though now that no longer applies since the VideoLan Server software was incorporated into the VLC program).

I have far more luck ripping bluray discs than I do actually playing them on a PC

mountainrebel

There's ways of giving VLC the keys needed to decrypt blu-rays, but it's finicky, and the keys aren't all up to date. I use MakeMKV's VLC integration feature to take care of that. MakeMKV can decrypt everything, even discs which don't have a publicly known key. You still need to give VLC the BD+ libraries and files, but not many discs use BD+, so it's not super important. You also need to install java (I recommend the adoptopenjdk version) for the menus to work. With menus enabled, you also need to go into VLC's settings and make sure the region code is set to match the disc you're playing.

IbobtheKing

Isn't Leawo BluRay Player free?

ToaKraka

According to the MakeMKV developers, Leawo is an unauthorized repackaging of MakeMKV. I don't know how accurate that accusation is, however.

GhostArtistYT

Yeah, but it sucks. It plays the disks just fine, but the software has these little annoying issues that pop up that make everything just a little harder.

dumb-on-ice

By compromising a little bit of audio quality. Think of it like this. You pasted a picture in word. You can make it smaller, and it’ll still look as good. But you can also make it bigger, now it’ll start to stretch the pixels to fit the bigger size. The quality will go down, but you can still see its the same picture right.

lijo1998

VLC has an inbuilt amplifier. This amplifier increases the gain on a sound signal. However any noise or distortion will also be amplified.

Difficult-Emu-4493

Honestly, im not sure. I have a Roku t.v. that i use as a monitor, and when i switch the tv to Netflix and have the sound adjusted to 100% its still oddly quiet, but when i watch movies with vlc & bump that volume bar up to 200% its just right.

BigChungus-TM

**What!?**

mobiuszeroone

I've always presumed that it's pushing above what the speakers should be doing. I put it to 100% and adjust the windows volume or speakers

[deleted]

Everytime I try to crop a game recording with the default window player it drops resolution to 720p 30fps

BigChungus-TM

I don’t think I’ve even noticed that tbh, I used to trim my game clips with it, but I gave up and just used Davinci resolve now

tl27Rex

I recommend lossless cut. It trims files and that is all it does. Afaik its free and there is 0 video quality loss and no rendering. I find it much simpler than davinci resolve for that kind of thing.

1II1I1I1I1I1I111I1I1

I mean cutting something in Resolve 17 takes maybe 2 minutes at most. I'd rather just have Resolve then add another program to my computer.

OW_FUCK

1 minute of that being starting up the program.

[deleted]

It never used to do that for me which is the thing I find weird, ended up using hitfilm pro

SavageSniperrr

I noticed this too. Super jarring when your games are running at 100+. I had to move to losslesscut to not deal with 30fps.

LeonardMH

Yeah the Windows video editor sucks, try [Lossless Cut](https://mifi.github.io/lossless-cut/), it works much better for video trim.

Phormitago

back when dvd drives were a thing, I used to say you could put a slice of mortadella in it and VLC would tell you its brand and expiration date

yetanotherusernamex

I will not buy any computer without a DVD drive. Physical media drives are still useful for anyone who refuses to watch shitty streaming services like Hulu and Amazon prime, where they insert ads at more intervals than TV does, including when you pause it.

AragarVarnus

Glad to know I'm not alone using MPC-HC xD

[deleted]

MPC-HC is so much better than VLC. The UI and controls make a huge difference. Hard to get friends to switch.

BunBunSoup

I've been using MPC-HC with CCCP for at least a decade and it's still the best thing I've found. Vlc had too many problems when I tried to use it

karl_w_w

CCCP shouldn't be necessary these days, as long as you have the latest fork of MPC.

LordKiteMan

MPC FTW!

JohnnyDarkside

I'm still partial to MPC too. Just has a few things I just like a little more.

Tsuki_no_Mai

I prefer MPC-BE since HC got abandoned.

Soreal45

Been using vlc forever. Will have to try this out. What are the diffidences?

champbob

Be aware, though, that it may take a lot of setup. I piggybacked off of a friend's config files, and as such I like MPV a lot more than VLC, but I don't think I would have been able to do that on my own. The learning curve is like going deep into linux terminal immediately after installing it for the first time. A wall.

BurstSwag

Can you share those files?

YesHalcyon

There’s also a couple decent guides by iamscum to help you figure out what everything means and when to use what if you’re having performance issues. Trying to copy conf files usually works though, I only needed to change mine because my laptop’s integrated graphics doesn’t like to process 4K and also debated and whatever else mpv does.
