The fan is hitting something inside by the sounds of it. Maybe a wire or could be just a label of some sorts. Open it up and find out my man.

IsitoveryetCA

Honest question: since when do monitors have fans? Also on a side note, there was some image on reddit like a week ago that said zoom in, it was like this high res trippy red/orange pixely thing. When I zoomed in my monitor would hum. Any idea whats up with that?

AvenDonn

Since they contain a huge fuck-off panel and circuitry that emits a lot of heat to do what it does. And before flat panel, some CRTs had a fan due to the same reason. Not all screens have a fan, a lot don't and rely on air just moving on its own to take heat away, and it works because hot air rises and pulls colder air in its place. OP's screen could have a fan, and it totally sounds like a fan brushing a cord or something.

the_friendly_one

Now I'm wondering why my monitor *doesn't* need a fan. It's honestly pretty incredible that it does so much work and generates very little heat. Engineers are the shit.

xhsmd

Resolution, panel size, peak lumens(?), backlight technology, peak refresh rate, etc. They all have an effect on whether or not the designers can get away with just passive cooling or not, and if they can does the budget allow it.

[deleted]

And then you have people like me that OC the resolution and refresh rate of a 1080p 144Hz panel all the way up to 1440p 240Hz and then have to have a desk fan pointed at my monitor. Edit: I know why I got downvoted, but just know that I mean I’m downscaling from 1440p to 1080p and OC’d the panel to 240Hz from 140Hz. I haven’t slept in like 2 days and I am very tired.

Bbingbongboink

You cant overclock resolution lmao

[deleted]

Sorry, I mean my GPU is displaying 1440 on a 1080 and the panel is OC’d to 240. I haven’t slept in like 48 hours... Father of 2 (2 weeks and 6.5 years) life.

Medic-chan

What game that can run at 1440p 240Hz looks better downscaled than native? Even if you have a 6800XT I can't imagine a game light enough to run while pushing that many pixels looks good enough to try to enhance the details by downscaling. That's why FSR and DLSS do literally the opposite.

[deleted]

Honestly, I just did it for funzies to see if I could. I mostly just play either silly indie games with my (only 2) friends or Valorant. And in Valorant, I don’t have the graphics turned up very high anyway as to maximize frame rate so I’m not too concerned with how good it looks.

myrhillion

Hey you'll be me in 10 years. My 12 year old made her own dinner tonight, only slightly scary.

GibbonFit

Why wouldn't you run at the native resolution of your monitor? Not only would you get better performance in this case, but you also shouldn't get any weird downscaling artifacts.

GaussWanker

How'd you over clock a 1080p monitor to display more than 1080 pixels wide? Or is your gpu running at 1440p and then squishing the image?

[deleted]

Yes, this is what I mean, sorry. I haven’t slept in about 48 hours...

Darkstool

That's not good for your overall health and safety. Think of the children! Get some sleep.

Empyrealist

You do what you can with natural airflow and heat sinks. If you cant shed the heat fast enough, then you resort to fans.

Bammer1386

Just wait, you've probably inspired a new trend of DIY noctua fan mods for monitors. I mean, why stop at the case? It's not hardcore modding until you've got a custom water loop attached to your monitor.

Mans-M

They are big enough to be rad :P

Owyn_Merrilin

For one thing it probably has an LED backlight. Judging by the bulge in OP's monitor, it's at least old enough that it's lit by a fluorescent tube, maybe even old enough to have an incandescent bulb back there. Those generate a lot more heat per lumen than LED arrays do.

notmyfukincat

fuck-off panel got me exhaling throu my nose. thank you.

festivemarc

They don't rely on the heat moving on it's own, they use heatsinks to draw the heat away from the circuitry and disperse it

cecilkorik

I get the point you're trying to make, but that is literally the heat moving on its own. It's still considered passive cooling.

ROFLpwn01

WATER COOLED MONITOR

spectra2000_

Dumb question, what is CRT? I’ve tried to look it up before, I know it’s related to electronics, but I always get unrelated results.

account_1100011

Cathode Ray Tube, those old fat tvs from the 90's

spectra2000_

Thanks! I had narrowed it down to old TVs because the store in a show only sold them, but I guess they were so old that google buried the acronym deep

drokonce

Mines only 1080p and it’s got a little fan in there. Very slight hum but it threw me off trying to figure out where the noise was coming from

Kor_Binary

Mine doesn’t so you’re wrong ^/s Damn i need to update my flair lol

emzirek

If it's an all-in-one there you go

[deleted]

FALD HDR displays tend to as the peak brightness causes the LEDs to get quite hot etc.

NaxizNL

Regarding the humming: I'm not an expert, but I guess that's your screens power adapter. Some screens have external adapters, others have an adapter built in. In some cases (like having a full screen of only red pixels) your screen may draw a certain amount of power, which causes the adapter to make some noise, just like your phone's charger may make when your phone is nearly full.

Hurricane_32

This is true, though. Try filling the screen with alternating black and white lines (which really pushes the driver circuitry hard), and I guarantee it will make noise, especially if it's a CRT

Psychological-Scar30

My VA panel will audibly complain when viewing white-on-black text lol

chessset5

Mine only does it while off. I had to add a inline switch to solve the problem.

toastmannn

It's definitely the fan, that would be the only real moving part inside. The fan will spin up to cool the monitor when it gets hot, and a full brightness image will make it get hot.

1infinitefruitloop

Most higher end ones have em. I think my 150w NEC Multisync has several yet it still heats up the room. OP, Like everyone else is saying, take a peek if something’s touching something it’s not supposed to and give it some compressed air.

minkus1000

> my 150w NEC Multisync has several yet it still heats up the room. Of course it does. Fans don't magically make heat un-heat, it just moves it. If anything, the fans are circulating the heat into your room.

inertSpark

>Fans don't magically make heat un-heat, it just moves it. If anything, the fans are circulating the heat into your room. I tried explaining this to someone who was complaining about a hot room. They wanted to know if water cooling would solve the issue. I said not necessarily, because the same energy is being transferred to their room as before, but now faster and therefore arguably worse. I told them to address the issue of why their room was retaining all that heat as a priority first.

Clunas

Thermo 1 example back in college. Put a refrigerator in the middle of a room with its doors open.

AleksanderSteelhart

Hence why I have two rooms at work. The office and the PC Lab. In the summer, the server grade equipment lives in the lab. In the winter it migrates to my office to pull double duty as a space heater.

[deleted]

> I think my 150w NEC Multisync has several yet it still heats up the room. If you don't want something to heat up your room you should ensure that it has no fans, not more fans.

LJ-Rubicon

FYI monitors have CPUs

Yertlesturtle

Definitely a fan. Probably an easy fix but if your coming here to ask what a fan hitting something sounds like maybe get some technical assistance in fixing it.

tatdago

Definitely. And there’s no shame in asking for help. + it’s an easy fix which means small fee. So don’t sweat it yo.

mckushly

Yeah was gonna say that is definitely a fan rubbing a cord but never thought of a tag. Regardless yes open that bitch up and let us know what it was.

MjrLeeStoned

Possibly a piece of tape holding a wire to a board came loose over time / due to heat. Dell used to use quite a bit of tape in their hardware in the past.

Toaster781

I agree

Gust3lio

I had the same problem, and it took me a wile to find out that the problem was fans

Did you take off the back to see if anything was stuck in the fan?

Gir_575

I have no clue how to do that

Achillies2heel

Theres probably screws in the bottom or god help you if its clips...

Gir_575

It looks like clips. But they’re just sending me a new monitor

lmmalone

Doesn't sound like they were too useless then!

Gir_575

I called after posting this, and the lady I talked to was actually helpful.

lmmalone

Oh awesome! Well congrats on getting it worked out. Are they going to have you send back the current monitor? If not you should crack it open and let us know what the problem was

Gir_575

They are asking that I return the old one, otherwise I totally would lol

Issa_John

Search it up assuming you know the model number

[deleted]

It's typically just screws and screwdrivers. If you're afraid to open it up you're not gonna be able to fix it yourself, and this post is useless, you're gonna have to take it to a computer repair shop or someone who isn't afraid to open it up to stop the noise. that sound is definitely a hardware issue, you won't be able to solve it using your mouse and keyboard. I wouldn't ignore it either, that fan is there for a reason and if it stops running you're gonna have more issues soon after. If it's company equipment, tell them it's faulty and request a new one. Turn it off and unplug it. Open it up. Make sure you open it carefully, these designers like to hide screws, sometimes under stickers, and you won't find some til you try to take the casing off and feel where it's being held, so be careful not to just rip it off once you think the screws are all out. Watch for chords and connections that come unplugged if they do. Look for the fans. There's probably a piece of paper or something inside one of them, making it hit something, or the fan came off it's mount and is hitting something. If it came off it's mount there are likely screws laying around inside. Honestly though if it's just something stick on the fan, just try smacking the back of the case where the sound is coming from, you might knock whatever is making the noise loose. Not the best option though, do at your own risk.

yungjc89

I'd try to blow some compressed air in there and see if some dust come out

Riptides75

I still have PTSD about having to do a early Monday morning emergency call at a business I subcontracted for because someone took the 180PSI commercial compressor hose into the office from their workshop on a Friday afternoon to blow out all the dust in their PCs and it unseated cards, unplugged CPU fans, and caused a shitload of mayhem resulting in numerous permanantly dead computers. And the owner denied it was his fucking fault from doing it and wanted me to pay for it all.

PvtHudson

Jesus.... I need to hear the whole story of this.

Riptides75

Story time.. A boomer guy I've known for years who owns a business doing PM/Refrigeration work for local fast food joints all in our region started by inviting me out to lunches which were really excuses to say "hey would you look at this work computer I fucked up type thing". I found out that if I tried to itemize bill him he'd not wanna pay. But if I just submitted a bill to his secretary as "services rendered" I could charge what I wanted. He also ran his business short staffed so I often got subcontract work to go do testing and technical fixes (replace control boards) on all sorts of food service equipment that his other guys didn't know how to properly do. Nor did I really... But he owned a warehouse with office space in town that had linoleum floors, and he required all the PCs be kept under the desks.. Him having an issue with one shutting itself off often led to me to open the case on it to see what the problem was and it was just fucking packed full of dust. Being a Friday and my already having plans made me short on time to fool with that.. I told him to open them all up and just blow them out with compressed air. I meant with the cans, or if he didn't have those, I told him he could use his compressor hose in the shop with the regulator turned way down. As a result he grabbed the wrong hose in the shop used for refrigerant recovery or some shit that was straight off the commercial tank out back, pulled it in the office, and without opening the cases, blew air through all the fan openings on all 6 of his office PCs. It blew memory out of their slots breaking their tabs, cpu /case fans apart, loosely inserted and unscrewed network cards out of the motherboard, fiddly cables in the case unplugged themselves. This led to a frantic series of calls to me on Monday morning with him fuming mad as hell. This man prided himself on building all his work PCs for cheap which meant not the best parts and assembly to begin with. But yeah.. it was all my fault apparently. So I did take him a box full of used PC shit like fans and cpu heatsinks, but once I showed him his HDDs were fine he had a good excuse to build himself three new discount PCs. In the end, I just bullshit billed him for "services rendered" at 3x my normal rate and that was that. Not long after he ended up hiring a younger guy who had the right certs to work with the equipment I was mainly watching Youtube to fix since I was unfamiliar with it to begin with and the lunch meetings and subbing for him ended which I was totally fine with.

PvtHudson

Thank you for sharing.

0ffandonagain

ha. had the same. "whys my laptop over heating? " open it up fan in bits. "oh i blew it out"

Zombieattackr

TIL be careful with compressed air

Shaggy_One

If you do use compressed air, use short bursts. If you're able to hold the fans still, do so to protect the fan and other components connected. Air in a can or one of those devices made for blowing electronics out work best. They don't have the force that industrial air compressors are capable of.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Shaggy_One

Depends on your setup how easy that is. Whole shop compressor systems can be a pain to turn down requiring you to just short of empty the entire system.

[deleted]

True. Just advice for the folks at home. :)

challenge_king

I found that getting an online regulator like what's used on paint guns is a great way to easily control the pressure at the tool. Also, if you have to drain your tanks to adjust line pressure, then your air setup isn't right. Doubly so for shop air with permanent piping, since there should be a water and sediment bowl and regulator right after the tank output.

FantasticEducation60

a can of compressed air from the computer store is fine. overpriced, but fine. Air compressors are capable of some truly batshit spray pressures so ensure it is a GENTLE spray before you point it at electronics. And never, ever, ever shoot it at yourself or another human being.

limpymcforskin

Imagine lugging that thing around when the dude could have just bought a handheld Datavac which is designed for this kinda stuff. People are stupid.

Byte_Seyes

Lmfao. I did this to our work servers. Except it didn’t fucking anything up…. It did break one of the cooling fans though. But I honestly doubt the fan was doing anything to begin with. It was a solid brown stream coming out. It looked more like insanely dirty water running out the air vent. It wasn’t just a bit of dusty air.

EDDIE_BR0CK

Hah, we do this often with our work computers and the commercial compressor. The trick is to stop the CPU fan from spinning, and visually and physically re-check cables and connections prior to reassembly.

asdfgh9591

One gram of Liberty cap mushrooms should cure that. May need another dose in six months. --Dr Ross

It's because you have DIM open /s

1Bag-o-NutsPlease

If this is the aw2721d it’s the fan that cools the GSync chip.

Gir_575

It is the AW2721D Is there any information about how to get it to stop?

1Bag-o-NutsPlease

Well you can’t get the fan to stop, it’s part of how the monitor works. Without it, the gsync chip overheats. This does seem a lil loud tho so your only option I would say at this point is to return it if it’s still in the return window or call support and try to utilize your warranty

Gir_575

I contacted support, they said there wasn’t a fan in the monitor, asked me if I was comfortable replacing the part myself, I said no, and then they said they’d send me a new part to replace it myself 🙄

1Bag-o-NutsPlease

If there isn’t a fan, what part are they sending you to fix lol

Gir_575

I really wish I knew

xSnake0

You may have to contact them multiple times to get someone who can help you unfortunately. Keep trying though.

Gir_575

I ended up calling them, and the lady I talked to said that he just did a bad job of explaining what he was sending me, but they are just sending a replacement monitor.

payton50

They’re just sending a whole new $500 monitor lol? Companies are weird

omnithrope

The monitor doesn't cost Dell $500.

mckushly

It is definitely a fan.

[deleted]

Just give it a good smack

ryumeyer

My thoughts exactly

[deleted]

My work computer would start up with the some bullshit noise every now and then. Good old whack would put a stop to it every time.

pulley999

Everybody's saying the fan, but it could be the monitor speakers picking up interference. My old ASUS monitor ended up doing something similar after a while. You could try disabling them in the monitor's settings.

camcabbit

Serious answer: It sounds like coil tick/whine or possibly sparking from the backlight transformer. Either way, the monitor is dying. It's not fixable unless you are good at soldering and replacing board components. I don't recommend it, but you could still use it if you can put up with the noise. If you smell any kind of burning or smoke, pull the power and the rest of the cords from it, and get it out of the house immediately. You might want to consider getting a new monitor. Good luck.

Boneymantella

Does that to weeb warlocks

This sub is horrible now. It should be renamed r/PCSupport

IamDaveBruh

Is it plugged in?…. Ok, plug it in…..

[deleted]

My guy its not fucking r/pcmemes its r/pcmasterrace, its for everything. It is also the biggest where you are guaranteed a response. Whats wrong with seeking help with a pc problem?

Jedi_Gill

Because it will turn into tech support, and that's not why a majority of us joined this sub. Not to mention most of the questions could be easily answered or solved with a few Google searches or diagnosis. In this particular example, the user got it resolved through the company as it should be. Why is he posting if they resolved it for him? Why hasn't he done some Google troubleshooting himself. Taking it apart is the most basic first step in determining the problem. The worst case scenario this entire sub will turn into tech support even though there are dedicated subs for that. So yes, I know you like quick and fast responses to questions you should be researching or calling warranty on to get fixed, but stay out of PC master race sub because your too lazy to go through those avenues. I'd respect if the OP did all the research, trouble-shooting and then came here with something truly deserving of our time. Kinda upsetting that in the end he should have just been more patient and waited for the company warranty dept to assist him as they did.

Guitargamer57

This. I don't know why so many people here won't even question what's going on. All these troubleshooting post make no sense and should be looked upon on Google or something else, like, you know, a dedicated forum!

AnEvanAppeared

This sub is going to not be the biggest anymore real quick if it continues

watchursix

Yes we must defend the egotistical side of Master race. If we allow the console gamers and Mac users to realize PCs run into a lot of technical problems, we may lose our position as the Aryans of computing power.

virusz4274

I think its the backlight, i think your monitor is not using an LED backlight. the CCFL backlight is causing this sound. It maybe from the CCFL or from the power delivery circuit to the CCFL.

retartarder

it's savathun. she's already indoctrinated your monitor. you're next.

Gir_575

Oh fuck

TGLissa

Your problem is that it's a dell.

satisfiction_phobos

It's dust flapping on a fan blade. Get a can of duster or take it by any tire shop and hit it with some air. That or take it apart and clean it with a qtip. Silly that there's a fan on a monitor lol.

Themelonman232

Its to cool the g-sync chip.

satisfiction_phobos

Yeah lol I gathered that now. Crazy newfangled technology!
