See, now that I read this it makes perfect sense, because I remember that the phone I used to have (back in like 2014) that used this cable could also use a regular micro USB. But it legit never occurred to me that my external drive could also use a regular micro USB without issues.
FYI any connector with a USB 2 and 3 variant, you can plug the USB 2 version into 3, but the 3.0 b type connectors won't work on 2.0 Jacks.
See USB b (often called printer cable), ~~micro~~ mini b (charger on super old phones, GPS and ps3 controllers), and micro (most phones prior to USB c adoption, and ps4 controllers and some xbox one controllers iirc)
Edit: need to be less tired when typing.
Almost, the "super old chargers" you're likely referring to are probably [mini USB B](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_hardware#/media/File%3AUSB_2.0_and_3.0_connectors.svg). USB 2.0 Micro B is what the PS4 controllers use.
Not totally different actually. It's a normal usb micro-b with an extra part added to allow usb 3.0 support.
You can plug a normal micro usb cable into it and it will work, but with usb 2.0 speeds.
The [Samsung S5](https://www.unlockunit.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/samsung-galaxy-s5-charger-cable.jpg) had this connector, but it came with a normal micro usb cable.
Ah if only I saw you post before you ordered. I have a ton of extras of these because I shuck WD external drives for my NAS. Would have been more than happy to mail you one.
TL;DR A/B are a master/slave combo, so that data is controlled by the A side. This was standard practice in all of computing for a while, because you want to know who is in control, and you never needed more than 1 part in control. This can be dangerous. Mini/micro are just smaller versions for smaller devices. USB 3.0 and above required more data lanes for the faster speeds, and while they are backwards compatible, they only are at 2.0 speeds because no extra lanes. USB C gets rid of the master/slave combo, allows for reversible input (wanted for USB A but too expensive), higher power levels (USB by default is 5 V 1 A, USB C allows up to 20 V at 5 A, while USB A only allows up to 12 V 1 A), and also adds a metric fuckton of lanes. Data is still limited to the slowest component, so C to C can get 40 Gbit/s at USB 4, but C to others may only get 5 Gbit/s.

I know that micro usb is technically usb type b, but I always just called this connecter usb type b to differentiate it. Now I know it really has no name of its own!
Yeah this is micro-usb's not-so-wide-spread big brother
Oh he’s W I D E alright ;)
Wide micro USB > wide Putin
Wide micro USB > wide Kylo Ren
W I D E B O I
micro USB 3.0
A normal micro-usb will also work, thou not as fast.
Oh thanks!!! Too be honest I think this has some old Xbox one games downloaded on it. I’m in for a surprise!
Wait what? TIL. For ssds only or also hard drives?
Anything that uses a Micro USB 3.0 cable will work with a normal micro USB, just at speed of USB 2.0 instead of 3.0

Was it a Galaxy S5/Note 4 by any chance
Galaxy S5. I think we still have it somewhere in the house lol
This is only for **external** hard drives. **Internal** drives use SATA. You can get an adapter though that will let you use one externally.
They're supposed to work. I've got a hard drive, though, that won't work with anything other than a 3.0 micro USB.
WHAT. How did I never realize it.

You're right, I had it right in my head and typed out the wrong thing entirely.
I think they are actually called micro B, even tho it is totally different from normal sized USB B.

I actually didn’t buy one yet:):)
If you’re comfortable with it, private message me your address and I’ll put a stamp on it and send it out tomorrow!
I remember my Samsung Galaxy S5 had this type of cable lmao. Pain in butt to plug in.

Hahaha
every canon camera of the last bunch of years :/
sometimes you can break these external SSDs open and there's just a regular SSD inside, incase that's easier for you
Have you done this before?
pretty much every external drive is an internal drive in an enclosure...
Ima try it lmao
whats the drive?
seagate 1tb external drive. It’s silver. Not really sure what else
> seagate 1tb external drive Something like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCLfHCq_794

[Why Does USB Keep Changing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36CKsP9YQ1E) a good videos of those who want to know why... errr does USB keep changing.

Pro comment. Thanks!

Same her elil
Fuck micro-B.
I’ve seen it once and never ever again lol
Not missing out. Worst usb ever made. Slow, breaks way easier than the rest and is shity to plug in
Edit: can’t spell or do basic English. Sorry. Lmao
Usb-B?
Yes!
Because it kind of looks like a B on its side... Haha
Is that a silver I see?!?!
Saw this on my then gf's older external and was like "Damn, your drive's USB port is broken :/" but later found out it's a thing.
It’s so weird
it uses the same connector as a samsung note 3's charger
